As a habitual loafer, I spend a fair bit of time thinking about how some songwriters can create music that can feel familiar yet unfamiliar and why I'm attracted to music that gives me both of those feelings. I also love finding music that feels very unfamiliar to me and I'm interested in why. As you might expect I've failed to come up with anything concrete, but I did read something which made me think: basically when you are younger, you tend to use music as an identity marker and engage with it to navigate social circles, find your tribe, stuff like that. And the theory goes that as you get older, your personality and social circles become more developed and  comfortable, so you tend to listen to music that's more familiar. I've definitely experienced change in identity and social circles over the last, I dunno, 15 years probably, so if that theory holds true, it would explain why I'm listening to much more diverse stuff nowadays - Ugly Kid Joe over Ramones? Ok, let's not go too far!Another view, from neuroscientist Daniel Levitin, goes like this: “when we love a piece of music, it reminds us of other music we have heard, and it activates memory traces of emotional times in our lives.”Today - 16th February 2024 - sees the release of Middle Kids' third full LP called Faith Crisis Part I and it's another beautiful evolution, showing another different side to the band, yet it's still got that familiarity of journey, evocative melodies, empathy and classic bangers too. This is a beautifully open and honest conversation with Hannah Joy about adaptability, reflections on quitting drinking, saying “yes” to things, finding the muse, work ethic mindset, formative influences that shape us, on stage versus off stage personas, her relationship with piano and guitar, consensus in songwriting,  curiosity…….https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. It is financed through crowd funding and the support of unnamed partners. Distribution will be handled by Bonsai Films.Production started on the light-hearted drama in Greater Sydney earlier this year. Heath Davis joins the latest episode of the Cinema Australia Podcast to discuss Christmess which he wrote, directed and co-produced. If you keep up to date with the latest Australian film releases, you've no doubt heard about Christmess. It's getting a lot of buzz at the moment with sold out screenings on the East Coast, upcoming screenings in Western Australia and Tasmania. There's national media interest and you may have even spotted a digital billboard for the film on your way home from work. If you've already attended one of the screenings, you would have heard Heath talk during a Q&A. He's doing his best to travel around the country with the film which is admirable. This is a filmmaker who backs and believes in his work. Heath is one of Australia's most exciting filmmakers, and there are few filmmakers whose new films I anticipate more than his. If you haven't seen Book Week, I highly recommend it. Heath's other films include the crime thriller Locusts and Broke as well as a stack of shorts which have enjoyed success at Tribeca, Flickerfest, MIFF and more. Christmess follows Chris (played by Steve Le Marquand), a once famous actor who now performs as a shopping centre Santa Claus after his alcohol addiction puts a pause on his acting career. After bumping into his estranged daughter, he seeks help for his recovery in order to win his daughter's forgiveness. Christmess co-stars Middle Kids lead singer Hannah Joy in a breakout performance, and Darren Gilshenan in arguably the best performance of his esteemed career. Put simply, Christmess is unmissable. It's the perfect tonic to most of the mind-numbing Hollywood dross currently saturating mainstream cinemas. The Hunger Games Part 47… really? More and more Christmess screenings are popping up daily, so be sure to follow Christmess on socials to find out where you can see it near you. Anyway… enjoy.

Aussie indie filmmaker powerhouse Heath Davis is back with his fourth feature film, Christmess. This seasonally appropriate flick follows on fom his grounded work with his solid debut film Broke, in 2016. Heath quickly followed this up with the black comedy Book Week, before swerving into thriller territory with Locusts. Here we follow washed up alcoholic actor Chris Flint - the never better Steve Le Marquand - who's getting out of rehab just in time for Christmas. He arrives at the halfway house run by Nick - a phenomenal turn from Darren Gilshenan - only to meet a fellow recovering addict Joy - played by Middle Kids lead singer Hannah Joy. Together they aim to make the best Christmas they can have, while also getting Chris onto the path of some kind of normal.Christmess sees Heath at his very best, showing a drive and fight for indie storytelling here in Australia that we would usually attribute to that of the American indie filmmakers. There's a sense of honest Australiana at work here as the heat of a summer Christmas adds to the drama of day to day life. While Christmess skews towards drama more than it does comedy, it adheres to the Heath Davis mindset of seeing the best in people and setting about to write a film that allows the actors to bring that out in the most natural and genuine way possible. As a trio, Steve Le Marquand, Darren Gilshenan, and Hannah Joy are so completely watchable and engaging that you start to feel like you're home.Christmess recently had its world debut at the Austin Film Festival, receiving wide acclaim from filmmakers and audiences alike. Now Heath has headed out on the road, like every hard working indie filmmaker has to, with the film being received by sell-out audiences. The following interview sees Heath touching on that communal experience of cinema, while also discussing his working relationship with Steve, Darren, and Hannah.Christmess is a seasonal treat, and as it stands, it's one of the very best Australian Christmas films yet.To find out more about where Christmess is screening near you, visit the Facebook page for more details. Halftime Chat R&B Podcast

The Darkchild instinctively knows how to showcase the best attributes of each artist that he works with. CEO of his Darkchild Productions, Inc., Jerkins has been responsible, through his numerous hit productions, for over 170 million in record sales worldwide.  Born the youngest son of a minister father and choir director mother in Pleasantville, New Jersey in 1977, Jerkins began taking classical piano lessons as a child and combined that with the gospel music that he heard in church. Rodney's God‐given gifts quickly blossomed, as the young phenomenon diligently worked on his music and began recording demos for local talent.  When New Jack Swing's Teddy Riley came across one of those early demos and opened the first door, Rodney's career took off like a rocket. Subsequently, his first professional writing and producing job came in 1994, for an artist named Casserine and at the tender age of 15, he and his brother, Fred Jerkins III, wrote and produced his gospel rap album, "On The Move." Since that time and continuously into present day, the Jerkins discography reads like a Who's Who of Hit Music.  In 1997, Jerkins continued his ascent to legend status by working with Mary J. Blige; he co‐wrote, arranged and produced five songs for her four‐time platinum CD, "Share My World," including the hit single "I Can Love You." That year, Billboard magazine touted him as one of the hottest R&B producers in the country, and again bestowed that moniker on him in 1999. He re‐teamed with Blige in 2006, with his production of her huge hit, "Enough Cryin," from her record‐setting CD, "The Breakthrough."   Rodney's 2006 production of Beyoncé's Number One smash "Deja Vu," dominated the airwaves and garnered him another Grammy nod in the process. A testament to its greatness and his genius, the perennial, memorable tune was highlighted during Beyoncé's 2008 Grammy Awards telecast performance.  Happily married to Lifestyle Music artist, Joy Enriquez, Rodney is also the father of four children, Rodney David Jerkins III, Heavenly Joy, Hannah Joy and Royal David Jerkins in Los Angeles. Jerkins also produced her latest Contemporary Christian album and debut of his Christian label, Lifestyle Music, titled “The Call” in partnership with Capitol Christian. He says "this is what the world needs right now, and we are happy to be the ones that God is using to deliver it."   A devout Christian with strong moral values, Rodney has not forgotten his roots in the church, nor does he compromise in order to conform to today's music landscape; instead, he consistently uses his myriad talents to shape groundbreaking music on his own terms.  Recently, Rodney has completed work on Rihanna, Ariana Grande, Jessi J, Justin Bieber, Ciara, Keyshia Cole, Alicia Keys, and Sam Smith.  #RodneyJerkins #michaeljackson #rnb #rnbpodcast #rnbmusic #newjackswing #hiphop #hiphopmusic  #DJCassidy #PassTheMic #HalftimeChat #NewJackSwing Halftime Chat is hosted by Mental Health Psychotherapist Nnamdi E.S. This podcast is broadly looking at the way that stories and reimagined narratives can help us shut down negative thinking patterns, deconstruct damaging systemic narratives, and take the power back in reimagining our own lives. My guest today is Hannah Joy Graves a.k.a. Cult Mother a tarot card reader in Berlin who you also heard on an earlier episode of About Face. While the reading of tarot is by no means scientific or having proven healing powers in a medical way, I do think that it has the power to do what narrative therapy also does, which is look for the answers that lie within us. Like narrative therapy, tarot opens up new possibilities for understanding and gives the individual the power to look at themselves and their lives in a new way. This was something I realized after my own readings with Hannah. It wasn’t about fortune telling, it was about seeing the way that my life circumstances could be approached differently. I love seeing the way life stories drive individual empowerment and the narrative healing happening in so many different practices.
