I've wanted to invite Middle Kids in to Take 5 for a while, and when Hannah said yes, and sent her songs back, I knew we'd be in for a treat. What Fresh Hell: Laughing in the Face of Motherhood | Parenting Tips From Funny Moms

This is one of our deep dives on how kids are shaped by their siblings. Find the rest of the episodes in this deep dive series in this Spotify playlist. Most people believe middle children are prone to feeling insecure and left out because they get less attention. Their primary emotional state? Jealousy of siblings. Studies show that we think these problems are real and inescapable. A City College of New York study found participants were most likely to use words like “overlooked” to describe middle children— while completely unlikely to use the word “spoiled.”  Psychologist Dr. Alfred Adler first proposed a “middle child syndrome” in the 1920s, and ever since, most of us have assumed the Jan-Brady worst. But Dr. Adler also believed that middle children's place in the birth order made them “uniquely poised to succeed.” Are we getting it wrong? Are there lifelong benefits for kids who grow up neither the pressured oldest nor the coddled youngest?  In this episode we discuss:  “middleborns” vs “classic middles" the negativity of the “middle child syndrome,” and whether or not it bears out why middle children are more independent and open-minded why middle children have a greater appetite for risk how the “ambient neglect” a middle child sometimes receives can be an incredible gift Writer Adam Sternbergh, himself a middle, says that "being a middle child is not something you aspire to; it's something that happens to you.” While that may be true, it also turns out that we should perhaps all be jealous of them. Being a middle kid can be secretly great. Here's links to research and other writing on the topic discussed in this episode: Adam Sternbergh for The Cut: The Extinction of the Middle Child Dr. Catherine Salmon: The Secret Power of Middle Children: How Middleborns Can Harness Their Unexpected and Remarkable Abilities Lindsay Dodgson for Business Insider: 'Middle child syndrome' doesn't actually exist — but it still might come with some surprising psychological advantages Risk-taking middle-borns: A study on birth-order and risk preferences Abi Berwager Schreier for Romper: Do Middle Children Really Have More Issues? As a habitual loafer, I spend a fair bit of time thinking about how some songwriters can create music that can feel familiar yet unfamiliar and why I'm attracted to music that gives me both of those feelings. I also love finding music that feels very unfamiliar to me and I'm interested in why. As you might expect I've failed to come up with anything concrete, but I did read something which made me think: basically when you are younger, you tend to use music as an identity marker and engage with it to navigate social circles, find your tribe, stuff like that. And the theory goes that as you get older, your personality and social circles become more developed and  comfortable, so you tend to listen to music that's more familiar. I've definitely experienced change in identity and social circles over the last, I dunno, 15 years probably, so if that theory holds true, it would explain why I'm listening to much more diverse stuff nowadays - Ugly Kid Joe over Ramones? Ok, let's not go too far!Another view, from neuroscientist Daniel Levitin, goes like this: “when we love a piece of music, it reminds us of other music we have heard, and it activates memory traces of emotional times in our lives.”Today - 16th February 2024 - sees the release of Middle Kids' third full LP called Faith Crisis Part I and it's another beautiful evolution, showing another different side to the band, yet it's still got that familiarity of journey, evocative melodies, empathy and classic bangers too. This is a beautifully open and honest conversation with Hannah Joy about adaptability, reflections on quitting drinking, saying “yes” to things, finding the muse, work ethic mindset, formative influences that shape us, on stage versus off stage personas, her relationship with piano and guitar, consensus in songwriting,  curiosity…….https://www.iwannajumplikedeedee.comI Wanna Jump Like Dee Dee is the music podcast that does music interviews differently. Middle Kids - "Dramamine" from the 2024 album Faith Crisis Pt 1 on Middle Kids/ AWAL Sydney, Australia-based trio Middle Kids celebrate love on today's Song of the Day. The track was co-written by bandmates vocalist/guitarist Hannah Joy and bassist Tim Fitz, who also happen to be married. This revelation makes the chorus of:  "You are the only reason I believe in anything/I hope you don't take this the wrong way" even more poignant.  The single gives a sneak peek at their forthcoming third full-length, Faith Crisis Pt 1. The album was co-produced by Fitz and Jonathan Gilmore (The 1975/Rina Sawayama), and will be released on February 16, 2024, via Lucky Number. Christmess Writer/Director Heath Davis Talks About Creating His Best Film Yet in This Interview

Aussie indie filmmaker powerhouse Heath Davis is back with his fourth feature film, Christmess. This seasonally appropriate flick follows on fom his grounded work with his solid debut film Broke, in 2016. Heath quickly followed this up with the black comedy Book Week, before swerving into thriller territory with Locusts. Here we follow washed up alcoholic actor Chris Flint - the never better Steve Le Marquand - who's getting out of rehab just in time for Christmas. He arrives at the halfway house run by Nick - a phenomenal turn from Darren Gilshenan - only to meet a fellow recovering addict Joy - played by Middle Kids lead singer Hannah Joy. Together they aim to make the best Christmas they can have, while also getting Chris onto the path of some kind of normal.Christmess sees Heath at his very best, showing a drive and fight for indie storytelling here in Australia that we would usually attribute to that of the American indie filmmakers. There's a sense of honest Australiana at work here as the heat of a summer Christmas adds to the drama of day to day life. While Christmess skews towards drama more than it does comedy, it adheres to the Heath Davis mindset of seeing the best in people and setting about to write a film that allows the actors to bring that out in the most natural and genuine way possible. As a trio, Steve Le Marquand, Darren Gilshenan, and Hannah Joy are so completely watchable and engaging that you start to feel like you're home.Christmess recently had its world debut at the Austin Film Festival, receiving wide acclaim from filmmakers and audiences alike. Now Heath has headed out on the road, like every hard working indie filmmaker has to, with the film being received by sell-out audiences. The following interview sees Heath touching on that communal experience of cinema, while also discussing his working relationship with Steve, Darren, and Hannah.Christmess is a seasonal treat, and as it stands, it's one of the very best Australian Christmas films yet.To find out more about where Christmess is screening near you, visit the Facebook page for more details. We had the pleasure of interviewing Matt Corby over Zoom video!Matt Corby recently released his new album Everything's Fine, via Communion. His first album in five years, Everything's Fine vividly captures the personal and creative growth of Matt Corby who, like many, was tipped belly side up recently. Beyond the global touring pause, on the day he was meant to start recording his new album, Corby and his family were instead rescued by a neighbor. Their home had been engulfed by the flood waters that raged through Queensland and New South Wales, Australia, in early 2022. After nervously watching his heavily pregnant partner and young son be whisked away in a small inflatable dinghy, he got to work ferrying provisions to stranded locals and digging rotting mud out from beneath his home. With their home inundated by floodwaters, the whole family moved into Corby's Rainbow Valley Studios during the album's recording process. Juggling familial responsibilities with his creative pursuits was a one-of-a-kind pressure cooker circumstance that galvanized his artistic evolution.Firmly fixed on seeing the best of things, Matt reveals “I'm at a really beautiful point in my life. I'm accepting all this stuff: the good and the bad, but particularly the bad. Which is kind of great. It's a good thing to come to that point. Life isn't always magical, but the moments that are, well you really value them. I think this record is about that, about managing your actual reality. Sometimes I have those moments when you realize: well I'm still breathing, you still have the gift of life, so everything is fine I guess?”About Matt Corby:Recorded at his Rainbow Valley Studios with Chris Collins (Gang of Youths, Middle Kids, Skegss), Matt Corby's third studio album Everything's Fine picks up where his 2020 stand-alone singles, “If I Never Say A Word” and “Vitamin” left off after his J Award-winning 2018 LP Rainbow Valley. In the time since, Matt announced the launch of his own independent record label, in between loaning his production expertise to work by Genesis Owusu, Jack River, Great Gable, Bud Rokesky and most recently, his award-winning collaboration with Budjerah. We want to hear from you! PSA: This is a long episode. Is that okay? Would you rather shorter? I'm super interested to know, but I definitely do look at each episode with a critical eye... always asking "can I take that out? Is this truly enriching? Will I hate this in 10 years?" LOLOLOL. But alas, today is an episode with one of my favorite things to call mine, my fellow middle sibling, my brother Jake. Jake is about 4 years older than me, but we had a lot of intersecting life and we continue to through friendship between each other and each others spouses. Jake is super smart, a really tender person and a killer dad, so I knew in my gut today's episode was going to be good. Enjoy! Lots of good stuff to unpack today. Let me know your thoughts!
