Edition No146 | 25-05-2025 - In a clear indication that peace is the last thing on Putin's mind, overnight on May 25th Russia attacked Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions with drones and missiles, in an attack that may constitute the largest of the war, and certainly the largest over several nights. The bombardment killed at least a dozen people including three children, according to local officials. Russia launched 69 missiles and 298 drones, according to Ukraine's Air Force. The attack coincides with Kyiv Day, a city holiday typically celebrated on the last Sunday in May and follows on from one of the heaviest Russian assaults on Kyiv throughout the full-scale war. The Ukrainian Air Force reported 45 cruise missiles were shot down by air defence systems and 266 drones neutralized. 22 locations recorded direct strikes. Kyiv was not the only place targeted or hit. In addition, explosions were reported in Odesa, Dnipro, Mykolaiv, Sumy, Konotop, Chernihiv, Ternopil, and Kharkiv, according to local news outlet Suspilne.----------LINK:https://kyivindependent.com/russia-launches-mass-attack-on-kyiv-ukrainian-cities-for-second-night-in-row/https://kyivindependent.com/explosions-reported-in-kyiv-amid-russian-drone-attack/https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2025/05/24/russia-strikes-kyiv-after-first-stage-of-major-prisoner-swap-a89203https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2025/05/24/russia-says-307-pows-exchanged-with-ukraine-on-second-day-of-swap-a89204https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2025/05/22/trump-putin-call-signals-risky-shift-toward-appeasement-through-trade-a89185https://kyivindependent.com/putin-remains-confident-in-russias-ultimate-victory-in-ukraine-us-intelligence-reports/https://kyivindependent.com/russia-hasnt-faced-enough-pressure-ukrainian-and-foreign-diplomats-react-to-massive-overnight-attack-on-kyiv/----------Your support is massively appreciated!SILICON CURTAIN LIVE EVENTS - FUNDRAISER CAMPAIGNEvents in 2025 - Advocacy for a Ukrainian victory with Silicon CurtainNEXT EVENTS - LVIV, KYIV AND ODESA THIS MAY AND JUNE.https://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extrasOur first live events this year in Lviv and Kyiv were a huge success.

Georgijs Ivanovs started the Ukraine Matters channel in 2007, and it has garners 11.5 m views. He started the channel to explain the situation surrounding the war in Ukraine in simple terms. Like myself, he is not Ukrainian, nor is he a military expert. But he has been to Ukraine many times and seen it almost fully (except for Odesa region). He has a lot of good friends in Ukraine, and in fact his wife is Ukrainian, and so feels extremely connected to the invasion that scaled up in February 2022. ----------Easter Pysanky: Silicon Curtain - https://car4ukraine.com/campaigns/easter-pysanky-silicon-curtainCar for Ukraine has joined forces with a group of influencers, creators, and news observers during this special Easter season. How do separatist conflicts arise and spread? When does separatism become a cover for a foreign aggression? How do local communities respond when state institutions collapse, and militants take over? The armed conflict in Eastern Ukraine, which started eight years before Russia's full-scale invasion, contains unique evidence to address each of these questions. In Seize the City, Undo the State: The Inception of Russia's War on Ukraine (Oxford UP, 2015), Serhiy Kudelia offers an authoritative study of the conflict at its initial stage--2013-14--based on a meticulous comparison of mobilization dynamics in over dozen towns of Donbas as well as in two major cities outside of it: Kharkiv and Odesa. Through his extensive travels and numerous interviews with conflict witnesses and participants, Kudelia explains how a small group of Russian agents and local militants succeeded in eliminating state control over the largest and most densely urbanized region of Ukraine but failed to do it elsewhere. Kudelia challenges the conventional accounts of the armed conflict in Donbas, which portray it either as an interstate conflict entirely manufactured by Moscow or as a civil war that broke out without any external influence. Instead, he argues that local actors prepared ideological and organizational basis for the uprising, but the successful spread of separatist control resulted from the covert intervention of Russian agents and widespread collaboration with them of town administrators and community activists. His findings also show that when enough members of local communities organized to resist militant takeovers, the separatist challenges there quickly dissipated. A fine-grained and highly original on-the-ground analysis of the origins of the wider Russian-Ukrainian war that broke out in 2022, this book offers broader insights into the conditions under which external intervention may trigger the rise of an armed insurgency in a society torn apart by political and ideological disagreements.

Franziska DaviesProf. Jan Claas BehrendsDr. Gustav GresselGabriele WoidelkoDas Moderationsteam:Jan-Philipp HeinRichard VolkmannDavid HarnaschProducer: David HarnaschTitle track vocals: Masha (10, from Odesa)

Edition No115 | 21-03-2025 - Russian drones have hit civilian targets in Ukraine's Odesa. the port city is ‘on fire' after a ‘massive' Russian attack against civilian targets and civilian infrastructure. Three people were injured, and a high-rise apartment building and a shopping centre destroyed. This is the essence of the Russian World – violence, mayhem and a desire to spread fear. This is Russia's response to Trump's so-called peace deal; this is what American weakness and naivety leads to. Rather than dampening down Russia's violence, it provokes into yet more intense fury. Russian forces launched a mass drone attack on Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odesa late on Thursday, striking three locations that triggered fires, while three districts of the city suffered from power cuts. Odesa has been a frequent target of Russian attacks in the three-year war, particularly the city's port facilities, which handle vital grain exports and provide essential income to support the Ukrainian economy.Odesa was engulfed in flames just, hours after US President Donald Trump expressed optimism about ending the war and as peace talks are set to resume on Monday. Although they are more and more coming to resemble capitulation and betrayal talks, which pointedly are taking place between the US and Russia, but with little to no influence in the process from Ukraine or Europe. Trump recently held separate phone calls with Putin and Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky on implementing a partial ceasefire – projected optimism about reaching an end to the war on Thursday, saying “we're doing pretty well in that regard.” Reality tells a different story. ----------LINKS:https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/russian-drones-hit-civilian-targets-odesa-cause-injuries-officials-say-2025-03-20/https://edition.cnn.com/2025/03/21/europe/ukraine-russia-odesa-fire-trump-intl-hnk/index.htmlhttps://www.reuters.com/world/europe/czech-president-pavel-was-odesa-russia-pounded-city-with-drones-2025-03-21/----------SILICON CURTAIN FILM FUNDRAISERA project to make a documentary film in Ukraine, to raise awareness of Ukraine's struggle and in supporting a team running aid convoys to Ukraine's front-line towns.https://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extras----------SILICON CURTAIN LIVE EVENTS - FUNDRAISER CAMPAIGN Events in 2025 - Advocacy for a Ukrainian victory with Silicon Curtainhttps://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extrasOur first live events this year in Lviv and Kyiv were a huge success. We're joined by a resident of Odesa who has lived through the full-scale invasion since 2022. After our main episode on the war, we felt it was important to hear a Ukrainian perspective. In this conversation, we explore the psychological impact the war is having on Odesa's residents and how their resilience is evolving, particularly as Russia's naval power continues to falter.

It is a grim milestone, more than 1000 days have passed since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. In the past week, attacks on the country have once again intensified. As winter approaches and temperatures drop, Russia is targeting Ukraine's energy system to leave millions of people without power. In our conversations, Ukrainians discuss their daily lives and resilience after almost three years of war and we hear from people in Dnipro and Odesa recovering from the latest attacks. “We're being attacked not only with the rockets but also psychologically,” Lidia in Dnipro tells us.
