After working for 15 years as a clinical mental health social worker, Laura Howe began to dream up what it could look like for church leaders to provide excellent support for their communities…without the burnout piece that often follows. Today, Hope Made Strong provides support for leaders all over the world, reaching 100 countries with its resources, tools, and global Church Mental Health Summits. Listen in to discover the many ways you can be equipped with the mental health resources needed to create resilient individuals and churches with knowledgeable and confident leadership. Quotes Many churches had the intention of caring for their people but struggled to do it effectively. And they seemed to burn through leaders and volunteers. Nothing ever really stuck. I knew that there is power in having a network of support through peers. The church has lessons to learn from the community. And the community has lessons to learn from the church. Church is about creating a space of belonging and healing…together. Today, we get to hear from Rev. Rebecca Bailey, a clinical counselor and recovery ministry leader for the 510 Foundation, as well as a non-profit outreach arm of Nashville First Church of the Nazarene. Rebecca shares her journey from finding the Lord at age 30, to serving and working with the local church, to now ministering to care team leaders as a cohort ministry leader with Hope Made Strong's cohort program. Her experience has led to building strategic and intentional systems within care ministry, and she shares her insights with us in today's episode! Quotes It wasn't until I had my own experience that I was able to recognize…this is a ministry for people, and I know what it's like to be on this side. All along the line, it's when things don't make sense that I start to go, ‘Ok, Lord, what are you trying to teach me?' If it makes sense, nine times out of ten it's my own brain and it's not the Lord's work. Life gets in the way, and if we aren't intentional, things will slip through the cracks. Systems provide us the way in which to stay connected and to fulfill our calling, which is to love others. Humanity shares three core needs: belonging, purpose, and hope. These are the three needs that inspired Laura Howe, Founder of Hope Made Strong, to bridge the gap between the clinical side of mental health and the church's role in care ministry. Today, we're hearing a bit of Laura's story along with an overview of how Hope Made Strong is supporting local churches around the world. A wide range of tools, resources, e-guides, courses, and training can help your church's ability to provide sustainable care. Quotes I began to notice that there was a striking difference between the needs that I saw in the community and the support offered in the church. Ministry leaders are caregivers too. The relentless demand and the boundaryless roles of ministry leaders are a recipe for burnout and compassion fatigue. The local church is not meant to be a club to pump up its members. It's a vehicle that God intended to move through to reach people and to bring them hope and healing in His saving grace. We want the conversation to go from a global context to a local context. With churches on the front lines of responding to those struggling with mental health, leaders are beginning to ask important questions. What is our role? What responsibility does the church have? What is an appropriate response? Instead of walking this daunting journey alone, allow Hope Made Strong to walk alongside you! Today, we're offering one of the most practical ways to move forward together. And it starts in your local community. Quotes It's just so exciting to see the ground swell around churches being active in supporting mental health. If you look into the research around mental health and addiction recovery, you will see that peer support, coupled with clinical treatment, offers the best recovery outcomes. As our valued friends, we wanted to let you know about a timely and important FREE virtual event coming up: the Church Mental Health Summit on October 10. We're helping spread the word about this very needed summit, presented by Hope Made Strong and Spiritual First Aid.  The summit's goal is to equip people as pastors, leaders, and volunteers, empowering them (and their congregations) to build a culture of care in their churches. We'd love for you to be a part of this event and share it with those in your circle. The more people who sign up and attend, the more churches and individuals we can help.  Summit participants will hear from a diverse group of speakers in four categories: Global Health, Community Health, Church Health, and Leadership Health. They'll learn how to break down the stigma of mental health and receive resources, tools, and strategies to help better serve those with emotional distress—and the people who care about them.  Our hope is that church leaders, pastors, and volunteers will take the tools from the Church Mental Health Summit and guide their churches to become safer places for desperate people to belong, be honest about their struggles, and find healing.  For more information, visit www.churchmentalhealthsummit.com …Information for coaching and spiritual direction can be found atwww.kairospartnerships.org We'd love to hear from you. When we're thinking about life management strategies that help us get the most important things done so we can live peaceful and fulfilled lives, we often overlook the need for self-care.   There are times as Christians when we feel like we should put the needs of others before our own. In fact, in Philippians 2:3-4, we're told, “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Everyone should look not to his own interests, but rather to the interests of others.”   However, we also see Jesus take time away by Himself to rest and reflect and recharge to do what God had called Him to do.   So, how do we strike a balance between caring for ourselves and others?   My guest, Laura Howe, and I talk about the importance of taking care of ourselves so that we can live out the calling God has placed on our lives.   In this episode, we cover: The need for care ministry within the church How we can reframe our thoughts and accept self-care is something we all need Jesus' example of self-care The value of sleep as a part of self-care Physical issues that can hinder good sleep Why you shouldn't be embarrassed to talk with your doctor about sleep issues 16 strategies for better sleep How to use your phone to start your bedtime routine   Laura, with over 15 years of experience as a mental health and addictions clinician, loves to equip ministry leaders to care for their churches & communities without burning out.     She is the founder of Hope Made Strong and the Church Mental Health Summit. Compassion fatigue is a reality for many caregivers in ministry. In this episode I sit down with Laura Howe from Hope Made Strong as she shares her insights and strategies on how you can tell if compassion fatigue is affecting you and what you can do about it. Laura defines compassion fatigue as "the physical and mental erosion, the wearing down, of your hope, empathy, and compassion." It is something that develops overtime and can compromise our compassion for others as well as ourselves. Compassion fatigue is not a sin, failure, or weakness. It is a result of being a caring person and doing good work. It shows up when we haven't had the opportunity to refuel.
