In this episode of The Care Ministry Podcast, host Laura Howe and guest Rebecca Bailey dive into the importance of strategic planning in care ministry. They discuss the evolving role of care in the church, emphasizing how intentional planning can help churches better support both congregants and the broader community without overwhelming resources. The conversation covers topics like balancing in-reach and outreach, developing volunteer capacity, and creating sustainable support structures. Rebecca also shares insights from leading a care ministry cohort, underscoring the need for clear priorities and collaboration to meet the real needs of people in crisis. Quotes "Care is more than casseroles. It's about showing up consistently and meaningfully for people, sometimes even just sitting with them." "We often forget that care ministry is not just about Sunday; it's about becoming a community hub of support and connection throughout the week." "People come to churches hoping for more than a service—they seek a family, someone to walk with them in their struggles." "A strategic care ministry knows its strengths and limitations, recognizing that no church can be a one-stop shop for every need." "If we're truly committed to caring, we need to plan for it. Otherwise, we'll end up putting out fires rather than offering meaningful support." We're grateful for Kathleen Otchy joining us on today's episode! Kathleen joined a Care Ministry Cohort and, today, she gives us insight into a bit of her story, why she found value in our cohorts after over 20 years of Care Ministry experience, and the best advice for anyone just beginning a care ministry role. Quotes Normalizing care is a very difficult thing to find. There's very little encouragement for Care people…so to be encouraged was invaluable. Welcome to the 90th episode of The Stories Collective! Today we are joined by our friend, worship volunteer and Care Ministry leader Deb Uhrberg. Deb and her husband Andy have been attending our church since 2019 and almost immediately became a big part of the ministry here. We are so thankful for Deb's willingness to share her story with us today. ⚠️ Before you listen, we do want to give you a trigger warning for this episode. Domestic violence and abuse within marriage is discussed throughout this conversation. ⚠️Deb was raised in a Christian home, being the daughter of a home front missionary. Her father was an evangelist who would set up carnivals and fairs to witness and minister to people. She shares some sweet memories about being involved with ministry like that at a young age. As many do, Deb shares that she strayed in her early college years. She never abandoned her belief in God, but she made some decisions and spent some time with people who weren't the greatest. While working as a paramedic she met the man who would become her first husband. It was rocky and even destructive from the start with physical abuse being present even in their dating relationship. Despite everything going on Deb went through with marrying this man. This would bring over 20 years of abuse and Deb kept everything hidden from her family and friends. She had a difficult time understanding what divorce meant for a Christian and those thoughts alone kept her in the marriage. Having a passion for worship ministry, Deb was regularly playing piano in churches and God brought a worship minister who eventually helped Deb to understand that she could get out of this marriage. Even more so, he reminded her that she was God's child, and that God did not want these things for her. Listen in and hear about how the Lord led Deb in His way to get out the abusive marriage, heal from years of hurt and pain and how her marriage to her current husband Andy has been a beautiful picture of hope. What is even more special is that God is using Deb and Andy to lead our DivorceCare ministry, ministering to those who once walked the path that they were on. Church is about creating a space of belonging and healing…together. Today, we get to hear from Rev. Rebecca Bailey, a clinical counselor and recovery ministry leader for the 510 Foundation, as well as a non-profit outreach arm of Nashville First Church of the Nazarene. Rebecca shares her journey from finding the Lord at age 30, to serving and working with the local church, to now ministering to care team leaders as a cohort ministry leader with Hope Made Strong's cohort program. Her experience has led to building strategic and intentional systems within care ministry, and she shares her insights with us in today's episode! Quotes It wasn't until I had my own experience that I was able to recognize…this is a ministry for people, and I know what it's like to be on this side. All along the line, it's when things don't make sense that I start to go, ‘Ok, Lord, what are you trying to teach me?' If it makes sense, nine times out of ten it's my own brain and it's not the Lord's work. Life gets in the way, and if we aren't intentional, things will slip through the cracks. Systems provide us the way in which to stay connected and to fulfill our calling, which is to love others. Quotes I can't overstate the importance of keeping records when you are caring for those who are vulnerable. A strategic care ministry is essential to a church's mission to love, serve, and support its congregation and the wider community. It provides pastoral care, crisis support, outreach opportunities, discipleship, connection, and holistic ministry, all of which contribute to the overall spiritual health and growth of the church community. In this episode, we get down to 4 components of a strategic care ministry. Quotes Ministry is the support and care provided by the church with the intention of strengthening belonging, purpose, and hope, and with the goal of equipping the whole person to flourish. No longer is the pastor, the primary caregiver, but people become neighbors to one another and care for one another as neighbors. Care is anything that strengthens belonging, purpose, and hope Care can't be isolated ministry or, or something that's done as an afterthought. It's actually the glue that holds everything together. If there were no limitations on your budget, what would your care ministry look like? This thought is every care ministry leader's dream and this conversation came up in the care ministry community when a question was posed about dreaming about what your care ministry would look like if nothing were off the table. Sonia Miller shared this and joins me in Episode 92 to talk about how care ministry would look without limitations. Our conversation is all things good and practical, you ought to listen in. Quotes Legitimate care can simply be sending a text saying I'm thinking about you and praying for you today. Our biggest strength is our people love people. People heal when they're loved well. No act of care is too small. There's so much vulnerability in grief. You can't quantify the support someone receives. Hospice care and palliative care are closely related and sometimes overlapping, but both of these areas of medical care still greatly misunderstood. This episode focuses on hospice care. For a better understanding of this important and vital ministry and form of care I turn to the Reverends Leah Brown, Kelly Belcher, and Jody Griffin. Leah Brown is Associate Pastor, Pastoral Care at First Baptist Church, Asheville, North Carolina. She joined the FBCA staff in 2008 and was ordained in 2010. She coordinates and provides pastoral care for the congregation. Leah graduated with a B.A. in Psychology from UNC-Asheville. She received her Master of Social Work from UNC-Chapel Hill and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. Her clinical focus is aging and end-of-life care. Leah worked as a hospice social worker at CarePartners Hospice and Palliative Care from 1994-2007. Kelly Belcher is an ordained minister and endorsed chaplain with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. She works as a hospice chaplain in Asheville, North Carolina Jody was a United States Army Reserve Chaplain with the 167TH Military Police Battalion and a Retired North Carolina Army National Guard Chaplain serving in United States Army and Navy confinement facilities. From 2016-2022 he was a community funded chaplain at Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution. He is currently the pastor of Central Baptist Church, Spruce Pine, North Carolina and chaplain at Medi Hospice, Boone, North Carolina.
As a leader in Care Ministry, you tend to become the go-to person and find yourself anticipating needs that others don't see, and you take on more and more responsibilities. Much as this can give you the whole superhero feel, in the long run, you may face compassion fatigue and wonder why you always feel overwhelmed. The truth is you cannot do it alone, there is too much on your plate for you to be all things for everyone. In Episode 73, I share: How leaders in the care field tend to neglect their own compassion How compassion fatigue actually happens Why self-compassion is important when you work in care capacities The value of delegation and how it can help you reduce the different responsibilities on your plate. Quotes Moses, a man who was able to lead the Israelites to freedom and was used by God to perform miracles was not able to solve problems all day by himself. The work of hearing problems and finding solutions is so great that it was too heavy for Moses to do on his own. You can be that go-to person or the one who people can rely on to get it done but God still doesn't want you to do it alone. It's not possible for you to do it alone Saying no or delegating isn't a sign of weakness or failure. It's a sign of leadership. On the show today we are talking about multi-campus care ministry and I'm honored to have Liz Addington from Elevation Church. As you listen to Liz share about how she leads a multi-campus ministry I don't want you to think, oh my my church is so much smaller, or has few resources. I want you to listen for the familiar, listen for the heart and the desire to serve. It doesn't matter if you have a single campus or multiple campuses the care is the same. It's creative, and it's intentional. For full show notes go to HopeMadeStrong.org/episode72

When you think of your church's care ministry does it have an intentional vision, budget, leadership, and plan? In many churches, it's an add-on to a staff person's job description with no intentional plan, vision, budget or appointed leader overseeing it. And I think this is a HUGE missed opportunity for churches. So in this episode, I'm going to walk through 5 ways you can approach your executive team or board about becoming more intentional about your church's care ministry.
