Community outreach is one of the most biblical things a church can do and Karmen Loney and her husband are doing just that. Through the community garden they established in their small town, they are making a huge impact on the community. "Mostly it was a way to welcome people to a place where they could come as they are and participate in something to grow beauty, food, relationships, and hearts toward Christ. We wanted to build relationships that could bear the weight of the gospel."Karmen's heart for people, both inside and outside the four walls of the church building, is bringing transformation and community to people in her town. Pastors' wives, I bet we can all quote Mark 10:43-44, ". . . whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant, and whoever wants to be first among you will be a slave to all". Serving is what we are called to do. We all know it. We all do it. But do we serve with joy? On today's episode, I'm chatting with Courtney Boyd about joy in serving. She has some encouragement for you today about what joy is, how you can experience joy in ministry, and how you can continue to serve in joy.- - - - - Join the Private Facebook CommunityThe Pastor Wife Life group on Facebook is a private group just for you! Happy New Year! Do you have a vision for 2022? I know God has a vision for you. Maybe He's dropped something into your spirit that seems overwhelming or impossible. We can learn a lot from Mary on how to respond when God calls you to something new.Luke 1:26-38 records the conversation between Mary and the angel Gabriel. I don't know about you, but I want to have the same heart towards my calling as Mary. She was open to hear from God. She was quick to ask questions when she didn't understand. She listened to what God had to say. She surrendered her plans so she she could surrender to His. She submitted to His calling even when it seemed huge and didn't make sense. She trusted that God knew what He was doing and went with it.And of course, because of Mary's heart, she became part of the greatest rescue story the world will ever know.God is no different today. He has a plan for YOU to be part of His story too.- - - - - - - - - - -Join the Private Facebook CommunityThe Pastor Wife Life group on Facebook is a private group just for you! November is typically a month where gratitude is in focus, but sometimes it's hard to be grateful in ministry. In this episode, Stevie Ciske and I chat about how to cultivate gratitude in ministry. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, "Give thanks in everything: for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus." Stevie points out that to not give thanks in everything is to be out of God's will. (#gutpunch) But what does that really look like? You may not have heard of it before, but the probability is high that at some point in your ministry life you will encounter the Jezebel spirit. In this episode, lead pastor's wife, Nicole Tull, shares her experience and what she's learned about defeating this attack of the enemy. Some people hear "Jezebel" and immediately think of a seductive woman, but that's not necessarily how it works. What is a common denominator is that the target is a man or woman of God in leadership. Be sure and check out the links below for more information.
When I created the anonymous survey for pastors' wives, one of the questions is "what do you struggle with as a pastor's wife?". I never expected one of the top 3 answers to be "my relationship with God." But, in fact, that's one of the top answers to that question! My friend Susan Belisle is on this episode of the podcast and she shares her insights on developing the most important relationship we can have. In her book, 40 Conversations with God That Will Change Your Life, Susan invites you to take a peek into her quiet time. One of the ways God makes the most out of our pastor wife platform is by using our experiences to help others. A personal tragedy in Karen's life has become the catalyst for a community-wide (and beyond!) outreach to minister to those whose lives have been impacted by the grief surrounding the death of a loved one. In this episode she shares how God brought her healing after the suicide of her brother to eventually become a facilitator for Grief Share, a ministry that helps those facing the deep hurt of losing a loved one or friend and supports them as they move toward rebuilding their lives. Karen Altizer resides in West Virginia with her husband and children. She is a pastor's wife and a homeschool mom, and volunteers for various ministries within her church and community. Karen has been in full time ministry for over 20 years and has been a facilitator for GriefShare for six years.
Shala Lamothe is a pastor's wife in the Dominican Republic. In this episode she shares about life in the DR, what she's learned from her years in the developing island-nation, and how we can stand with missionaries in prayer.
Today's episode is POWERFUL, but may be intense for some listeners. Jessica Francavilla is a post-abortive pastor's wife who is passionate about sharing the grace of God in her life. Her story is one of mercy and hope and I know you will be encouraged by it! For more resources and to connect with Jessica, check out the show notes at The Pastor Wife Life - Episode 108

But that didn't stop them from moving forward, “zoom”ing their launch team gatherings and planting a church in the midst of a pandemic! Ashley's symptoms were mild enough, but Greg's symptoms were extreme and turned into one of the rarest casest (1 out of only 30 documented in the world!) doctors had ever seen. 7 Tips to Get the Most Out of Your Bible Reading Plan 1. Remember the WHY. We don't follow the plan just so we can check off a box and say we accomplished it. We read the Word to know God and to develop a deeper relationship with Him. Reading the Word gives us a greater understanding of who He is and shows us a wider picture of what He has done, what He is doing, and what He is going to do. It reminds us who we are because of Him and reveals our purpose. It helps us set our focus on things above, and gives us wisdom to live the life He created us to live. 2. Choose a time and a place. When is the best time to read? Believe it or not, there is no hard, fast rule about when you have your quiet time. For most of us, the morning works out to be the best time – a time before the distractions of the day hit. By getting up a few minutes earlier, you have the benefit of setting your focus for the day. You have the opportunity to let God's voice be the first voice that you hear, before all the other voices in your world have a chance to barge in. Some people use their lunch break for their time. Others before they go to sleep. The important thing is to choose a time when you are alert and can really focus on what the Word is saying. Whatever time you choose, commit to it. Show up. Be ready to receive. If something happens and you miss your time, reschedule it for later. Getting behind is discouraging and the enemy will do his best to influence you to just give up. If you get behind, don't give up. Keep going! Catch up when you can! Decide where you are going to read. I like to read at my desk because I take a lot of notes. I like to have my pens and highlighters handy. Wherever you choose, choose a place as free from distraction as possible. If you're like me and want to have supplies ready, get a basket or a bag and put your Bible, journal, and pens in it so it's always ready to go. 3. Use a print Bible. We live in a time where everything is available digitally. It's really easy to open the Bible app on your phone and read from there. But can I encourage you to use a print Bible? Our minds have become accustomed to opening our phones and just skimming through content and we miss so much!. Scientific studies have shown that we absorb more when we read printed books over digital ones. Having an actual Bible in our hands allows us to really engage with the Word. Highlighting and underlining and making notes in the margins personalizes our experience and keeps our attention. One thing you may find helpful though, is to listen to the Word while you read it. I use the audio from the Bible app while I read the Word in my print Bible and there's something to hearing the words and seeing the words at the same time. You can find the Bibles that PD and I will using on Amazon. We both like having the wide margins to take notes in, but they also make a regular OYB that's smaller and a little easier to handle. You can also use a Bible you already have and follow along with the printed plan. 4. Keep a journal. I am a writer. I write everything down, so of course I keep a quiet time journal. I learned this from my first mentor when I was a teenager and I absolutely treasure looking back at what I've written! My journal is probably a bit more elaborate than most peoples, but the principle of journaling – of writing down what you observed in the Wo

We are experiencing an unprecedented (at least in our lifetime) event as this episode goes live. As pastors' wives, we are stepping into a whole new arena of ministry and as a popular meme says, "and just like that, we were all televangelists." We are learning more than ever before that the Church is not a building and we are finding new ways to connect with our people. The creativity of Church Creatives around the world has lit up the Facebook groups I'm in and I wanted to share a few ideas on how we can continue to minister in this crazy season! This list is certainly not exhaustive, but I asked the ladies in the Pastor Wife Life Facebook group how they are connecting with their people and communities and I've compiled some of these answers right here. 1. Provide lunches for healthcare employees. (Andrea Z.) 2. Send out a daily text with a prayer focus for the day. (Julie M.) 3. Create a private Facebook group for your church family. (Julie M.) 4. Feeding kids in the local community. (Julie M.) 5. Feeding parents at the local children's hospital. (Julie M.) 6. Zoom Meetings (Nicole C.) Zoom is a video conferencing app that allows you to meet virtually and it's a fun way to connect. People are leading Sunday School classes, Bible studies, small groups, youth gatherings, discipleship, etc. The possibilities are endless! 7. Phone calls. Yes! Actual phone calls. (This is way out of my comfort zone, but I'm making myself do it!) A lot of our older members aren't comfortable texting and some don't do social media at all so a phone call to them means so much! We divided our church directory between the staff and leadership and are all making phone calls to our congregation. 8. Post Bible stories and lessons for kids. Many churches are posting quick videos from their children's pastor or directors. LifeChurch has a ton of free resources available. Other companies have waived their copyright restrictions to those who have purchased their curriculum. 9. Provide a packet for kids with worksheets, crafts, and other things to go along with the video lessons. Drop them off at homes. 10. Coronavirus Caroling. One of our members, Jenna, posted "this past Saturday, myself and a few other ladies went 'coronavirus caroling'. We drove separately to people's homes from our church family and sang hymns to them from their yards (a responsible distance apart). I can't tell you how many people stood on their porches in tears singing with us. It
