Fr. Mike shortly touches on David's honest prayer in Psalm 109 before diving into the unending love God has for his people. As we continue to journey through our readings, we will begin to see the words of the prophets come to fruition as those who return to the Lord in faith will experience his undying love and forgiveness, despite their unfaithfulness. Today's readings are 2 Kings 9, Hosea 11-14, and Psalm 109. For the complete reading plan, visit ascensionpress.com/bibleinayear. Please note: The Bible contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.

Psalms and Wisdom: Proverbs 8 Proverbs 8 (Listen) The Blessings of Wisdom 8   Does not wisdom call?    Does not understanding raise her voice?2   On the heights beside the way,    at the crossroads she takes her stand;3   beside the gates in front of the town,    at the entrance of the portals she cries aloud:4   “To you, O men, I call,    and my cry is to the children of man.5   O simple ones, learn prudence;    O fools, learn sense.6   Hear, for I will speak noble things,    and from my lips will come what is right,7   for my mouth will utter truth;    wickedness is an abomination to my lips.8   All the words of my mouth are righteous;    there is nothing twisted or crooked in them.9   They are all straight to him who understands,    and right to those who find knowledge.10   Take my instruction instead of silver,    and knowledge rather than choice gold,11   for wisdom is better than jewels,    and all that you may desire cannot compare with her. 12   “I, wisdom, dwell with prudence,    and I find knowledge and discretion.13   The fear of the LORD is hatred of evil.  Pride and arrogance and the way of evil    and perverted speech I hate.14   I have counsel and sound wisdom;    I have insight; I have strength.15   By me kings reign,    and rulers decree what is just;16   by me princes rule,    and nobles, all who govern justly.117   I love those who love me,    and those who seek me diligently find me.18   Riches and honor are with me,    enduring wealth and righteousness.19   My fruit is better than gold, even fine gold,    and my yield than choice silver.20   I walk in the way of righteousness,    in the paths of justice,21   granting an inheritance to those who love me,    and filling their treasuries. 22   “The LORD possessed2 me at the beginning of his work,3    the first of his acts of old.23   Ages ago I was set up,    at the first, before the beginning of the earth.24   When there were no depths I was brought forth,    when there were no springs abounding with water.25   Before the mountains had been shaped,    before the hills, I was brought forth,26   before he had made the earth with its fields,    or the first of the dust of the world.27   When he established the heavens, I was there;    when he drew a circle on the face of the deep,28   when he made firm the skies above,    when he established4 the fountains of the deep,29   when he assigned to the sea its limit,    so that the waters might not transgress his command,  when he marked out the foundations of the earth,30     then I was beside him, like a master workman,  and I was daily his5 delight,    rejoicing before him always,31   rejoicing in his inhabited world    and delighting in the children of man. 32   “And now, O sons, listen to me:    blessed are those who keep my ways.33   Hear instruction and be wise,    and do not neglect it.34   Blessed is the one who listens to me,    watching daily at my gates,    waiting beside my doors.35   For whoever finds me finds life    and obtains favor from the LORD,36   but he who fails to find me injures himself;    all who hate me love death.” Footnotes [1] 8:16 Most Hebrew manuscripts; many Hebrew manuscripts, Septuagint govern the earth [2] 8:22 Or fathered; Septuagint created [3] 8:22 Hebrew way [4] 8:28 The meaning of the Hebrew is uncertain [5] 8:30 Or daily filled with (ESV) Pentateuch and History: Deuteronomy 15:1–18 Deuteronomy 15:1–18 (Listen) The Sabbatical Year 15 “At the end of every seven years you shall grant a release. 2 And this is the manner of the release: every creditor shall release what he has lent to his neighbor. He shall not exact it of his neighbor, his brother, because the LORD's release has been proclaimed. 3 Of a foreigner you may exact it, but whatever of yours is with your brother your hand shall release. 4 But there will be no poor among you; for the LORD will bless you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you for an inheritance to possess—5 if only you will strictly obey the voice of the LORD your God, being careful to do all this commandment that I command you today. 6 For the LORD your God will bless you, as he promised you, and you shall lend to many nations, but you shall not borrow, and you shall rule over many nations, but they shall not rule over you. 7 “If among you, one of your brothers should become poor, in any of your towns within your land that the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not harden your heart or shut your hand against your poor brother, 8 but you shall open your hand to him and lend him sufficient for his need, whatever it may be. 9 Take care lest there be an unworthy thought in your heart and you say, ‘The seventh year, the year of release is near,' and your eye look grudgingly1 on your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry to the LORD against you, and you be guilty of sin. 10 You shall give to him freely, and your heart shall not be grudging when you give to him, because for this the LORD your God will bless you in all your work and in all that you undertake. 11 For there will never cease to be poor in the land. Therefore I command you, ‘You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in your land.' 12 “If your brother, a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, is sold2 to you, he shall serve you six years, and in the seventh year you shall let him go free from you. 13 And when you let him go free from you, you shall not let him go empty-handed. 14 You shall furnish him liberally out of your flock, out of your threshing floor, and out of your winepress. As the LORD your God has blessed you, you shall give to him. 15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God redeemed you; therefore I command you this today. 16 But if he says to you, ‘I will not go out from you,' because he loves you and your household, since he is well-off with you, 17 then you shall take an awl, and put it through his ear into the door, and he shall be your slave3 forever. And to your female slave4 you shall do the same. 18 It shall not seem hard to you when you let him go free from you, for at half the cost of a hired worker he has served you six years. So the LORD your God will bless you in all that you do. Footnotes [1] 15:9 Or be evil; also verse 10 [2] 15:12 Or sells himself [3] 15:17 Or servant; the Hebrew term ‘ebed designates a range of social and economic roles (see Preface) [4] 15:17 Or servant (ESV) Chronicles and Prophets: Hosea 11:12–13:16 Hosea 11:12–13:16 (Listen) 12   1 Ephraim has surrounded me with lies,    and the house of Israel with deceit,  but Judah still walks with God    and is faithful to the Holy One.12   Ephraim feeds on the wind    and pursues the east wind all day long;  they multiply falsehood and violence;    they make a covenant with Assyria,    and oil is carried to Egypt. The Lord's Indictment of Israel and Judah 2   The LORD has an indictment against Judah    and will punish Jacob according to his ways;    he will repay him according to his deeds.3   In the womb he took his brother by the heel,    and in his manhood he strove with God.4   He strove with the angel and prevailed;    he wept and sought his favor.  He met God2 at Bethel,    and there God spoke with us—5   the LORD, the God of hosts,    the LORD is his memorial name:6   “So you, by the help of your God, return,    hold fast to love and justice,    and wait continually for your God.” 7   A merchant, in whose hands are false balances,    he loves to oppress.8   Ephraim has said, “Ah, but I am rich;    I have found wealth for myself;  in all my labors they cannot find in me iniquity or sin.”9   I am the LORD your God    from the land of Egypt;  I will again make you dwell in tents,    as in the days of the appointed feast. 10   I spoke to the prophets;    it was I who multiplied visions,    and through the prophets gave parables.11   If there is iniquity in Gilead,    they shall surely come to nothing:  in Gilgal they sacrifice bulls;    their altars also are like stone heaps    on the furrows of the field.12   Jacob fled to the land of Aram;    there Israel served for a wife,    and for a wife he guarded sheep.13   By a prophet the LORD brought Israel up from Egypt,    and by a prophet he was guarded.14   Ephraim has given bitter provocation;    so his Lord will leave his bloodguilt on him    and will repay him for his disgraceful deeds. The Lord's Relentless Judgment on Israel 13   When Ephraim spoke, there was trembling;    he was exalted in Israel,    but he incurred guilt through Baal and died.2   And now they sin more and more,    and make for themselves metal images,  idols skillfully made of their silver,    all of them the work of craftsmen.  It is said of them,    “Those who offer human sacrifice kiss calves!”3   Therefore they shall be like the morning mist    or like the dew that goes early away,  like the chaff that swirls from the threshing floor    or like smoke from a window. 4   But I am the LORD your God    from the land of Egypt;  you know no God but me,    and besides me there is no savior.5   It was I who knew you in the wilderness,    in the land of drought;6   but when they had grazed,3 they became full,    they were filled, and their heart was lifted up;    therefore they forgot me.7   So I am to them like a lion;    like a leopard I will lurk beside the way.8   I will fall upon them like a bear robbed of her cubs;    I will tear open their breast,  and there I will devour them like a lion,    as a wild beast would rip them open. 9   He destroys4 you, O Israel,    for you are against me, against your helper.10   Where now is your king, to save you in all your cities?    Where are all your rulers—  those of whom you said,    “Give me a king and princes”?11   I gave you a king in my anger,    and I took him away in my wrath. 12   The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up;    his sin is kept in store.13   The pangs of childbirth come for him,    but he is an unwise son,  for at the right time he does not present himself    at the opening of the womb. 14   I shall ransom them from the power of Sheol;    I shall redeem them from Death.5  O Death, where are your plagues?    O Sheol, where is your sting?    Compassion is hidden from my eyes. 15   Though he may flourish among his brothers,    the east wind, the wind of the LORD, shall come,    rising from the wilderness,  and his fountain shall dry up;    his spring shall be parched;  it shall strip his treasury    of every precious thing.16   6 Samaria shall bear her guilt,    because she has rebelled against her God;  they shall fall by the sword;    their little ones shall be dashed in pieces,    and their pregnant women ripped open. Psalms and Wisdom: Proverbs 7 Proverbs 7 (Listen) Warning Against the Adulteress 7   My son, keep my words    and treasure up my commandments with you;2   keep my commandments and live;    keep my teaching as the apple of your eye;3   bind them on your fingers;    write them on the tablet of your heart.4   Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”    and call insight your intimate friend,5   to keep you from the forbidden1 woman,    from the adulteress2 with her smooth words. 6   For at the window of my house    I have looked out through my lattice,7   and I have seen among the simple,    I have perceived among the youths,    a young man lacking sense,8   passing along the street near her corner,    taking the road to her house9   in the twilight, in the evening,    at the time of night and darkness. 10   And behold, the woman meets him,    dressed as a prostitute, wily of heart.311   She is loud and wayward;    her feet do not stay at home;12   now in the street, now in the market,    and at every corner she lies in wait.13   She seizes him and kisses him,    and with bold face she says to him,14   “I had to offer sacrifices,4    and today I have paid my vows;15   so now I have come out to meet you,    to seek you eagerly, and I have found you.16   I have spread my couch with coverings,    colored linens from Egyptian linen;17   I have perfumed my bed with myrrh,    aloes, and cinnamon.18   Come, let us take our fill of love till morning;    let us delight ourselves with love.19   For my husband is not at home;    he has gone on a long journey;20   he took a bag of money with him;    at full moon he will come home.” 21   With much seductive speech she persuades him;    with her smooth talk she compels him.22   All at once he follows her,    as an ox goes to the slaughter,  or as a stag is caught fast523     till an arrow pierces its liver;  as a bird rushes into a snare;    he does not know that it will cost him his life. 24   And now, O sons, listen to me,    and be attentive to the words of my mouth.25   Let not your heart turn aside to her ways;    do not stray into her paths,26   for many a victim has she laid low,    and all her slain are a mighty throng.27   Her house is the way to Sheol,    going down to the chambers of death. You shall not cut yourselves or make any baldness on your foreheads for the dead. 2 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God, and the LORD has chosen you to be a people for his treasured possession, out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth. 3 “You shall not eat any abomination. 4 These are the animals you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat, 5 the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the wild goat, the ibex,1 the antelope, and the mountain sheep. 6 Every animal that parts the hoof and has the hoof cloven in two and chews the cud, among the animals, you may eat. 7 Yet of those that chew the cud or have the hoof cloven you shall not eat these: the camel, the hare, and the rock badger, because they chew the cud but do not part the hoof, are unclean for you. 8 And the pig, because it parts the hoof but does not chew the cud, is unclean for you. Their flesh you shall not eat, and their carcasses you shall not touch. 9 “Of all that are in the waters you may eat these: whatever has fins and scales you may eat. 10 And whatever does not have fins and scales you shall not eat; it is unclean for you. 11 “You may eat all clean birds. 12 But these are the ones that you shall not eat: the eagle,2 the bearded vulture, the black vulture, 13 the kite, the falcon of any kind; 14 every raven of any kind; 15 the ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull, the hawk of any kind; 16 the little owl and the short-eared owl, the barn owl 17 and the tawny owl, the carrion vulture and the cormorant, 18 the stork, the heron of any kind; the hoopoe and the bat. 19 And all winged insects are unclean for you; they shall not be eaten. 20 All clean winged things you may eat. 21 “You shall not eat anything that has died naturally. You may give it to the sojourner who is within your towns, that he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner. For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. “You shall not boil a young goat in its mother's milk. Tithes 22 “You shall tithe all the yield of your seed that comes from the field year by year. 23 And before the LORD your God, in the place that he will choose, to make his name dwell there, you shall eat the tithe of your grain, of your wine, and of your oil, and the firstborn of your herd and flock, that you may learn to fear the LORD your God always. 24 And if the way is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, when the LORD your God blesses you, because the place is too far from you, which the LORD your God chooses, to set his name there, 25 then you shall turn it into money and bind up the money in your hand and go to the place that the LORD your God chooses 26 and spend the money for whatever you desire—oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink, whatever your appetite craves. And you shall eat there before the LORD your God and rejoice, you and your household. 27 And you shall not neglect the Levite who is within your towns, for he has no portion or inheritance with you. 28 “At the end of every three years you shall bring out all the tithe of your produce in the same year and lay it up within your towns. 29 And the Levite, because he has no portion or inheritance with you, and the sojourner, the fatherless, and the widow, who are within your towns, shall come and eat and be filled, that the LORD your God may bless you in all the work of your hands that you do. In this week's devotions, I thought we would have a think about God. Sounds straight forward I know - of course, it's not as straight forward as we might think. There are many gods in this world: Hinduism alone has thousands, regardless of all the other faiths. Today, people worship all kinds of gods, even Christians seem to have some differences. Some see God as One of judgement, law and apartness. Others see God as One of love, grace and connectedness. The question we are going to explore is, what kind of God do we believe in? and, of course, the answer to that will affect everything.

Hosea 11-14: Death, Where Is Your Sting?

Jesus In All Of The Bible

This Bible study devotional covers Hosea 11-14. In this passage, God calls on the sting of death to rise against his adulterous people. They have repeated the idolatry of the Exodus story, and now the plagues that came against Egypt are coming against them. As always, we are committed to showing you how Jesus fulfills these specific passages. In Hosea 11-14, we see that Jesus flipped the sting of death on its head. Because he died under our plagues and rose from the dead, the threat of death's sting has turned into a taunt. Where is your sting death? In Jesus' resurrection, it is completely gone! For more information about Spoken Gospel visit: https://www.spokengospel.com We believe the only path to transformative Bible engagement is to see Jesus and his gospel wherever you are in the story. Jesus taught that he can be seen on every page of the Bible. Only by seeing the light of the Gospel in the face of Jesus can we be transformed into his image (2 Cor. 3:18, 4:6). We want to help people engage with every corner of the Bible in a transformative way. To that end, we are making Christ-centered, devotional podcasts that cover every chapter of the Bible. They are brief field guides through every passage of scripture that explain each chapter within its context and how it reveals more about the good news of Jesus. The Gospel changes things. Through our resources, we hope to create growing, deepening, and transforming Bible engagement that reshapes individuals, churches, and cultures with the Gospel. And we hope that you will join us in that mission.
