When it opened in 1919, the Hotel Pennsylvania was the largest hotel in the world. Over a hundred years later, its fate remains uncertain. Is it too big to save? After the Pennsylvania Railroad completed its colossal Pennsylvania Station in 1910, the railroad quickly realized it would need a companion hotel equal to the station's exquisite grandeur. And it would need an uncommonly ambitious hotelier to operate it. Enter E.M. Statler, the hotel king who made his name at American World's Fairs and brought sophisticated new ideas to this exceptional hotel geared towards middle-class and business travelers. But the Hotel Pennsylvania would have another claim to fame during the Swing Era. Its restaurants and ballrooms -- particularly the Café Rouge  -- would feature some of the greatest names of the Big Band Era. Glenn Miller played the Cafe Rouge many times at the height of his orchestra's fame. He was so associated with the hotel that one of his biggest hits is a tribute -- "Pennsylvania 6-5000." The hotel outlived the demolition of the original Penn Station, but it currently sits empty and faces imminent demolition thanks to an ambitious new plan to rehabilitate the neighborhood. What will be the fate of this landmark to music history? Is this truly the last dance for the Hotel Pennsylvania? boweryboyshistory.com Listen to the official Bowery Boys playlist inspired by this episode on Spotify. In the month of May, several jazz and big band clarinetists were born. Here are some that I know of: Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, Woody Herman, Jimmy Hamilton, Edmond Hall, and Ken Peplowski, who is still with us. So as I usually do, I will be presenting music by these great players and band leaders. Our first birthday celebration is for Benny Goodman. He was born May 30, 1909. I thought it would be fun to listen to a couple of radio remotes that I have to celebrate Benny's birthday. The first is from 1937 recorded at the Madhattan Room of the Hotel Pennsylvania and the second is from 1936 recorded at the Congress Hotel In Chicago. Happy Birthday Benny. One cold evening in January 1936, with the world in the midst of the Great Depression, Dale Carnegie addressed a sold-out, standing-room-only crowd at the luxurious Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City. Despite the global economic crisis, Carnegie, in a series of full-page newspaper ads, had promised the attendees that they could increase their incomes, and he was about to deliver on that promise. But how exactly did Carnegie come to discover these priceless, proven secrets of social, professional, and financial success? In this episode of Classic Influence, we’ll travel back to the 1930s and discover how a man born into poverty on a farm in Missouri came to become one of the best-selling authors of all time, “The Father of Self-Help,” and, in time, the head of a thriving personal development empire the likes of which the world had never before seen.

From New York, the greatest city in the world, it's The Update with Brandon Julien, but this time on the road. We're again at the IBS conference from the Hotel Pennsylvania in Midown, where college radio stations and students from around the country gather to exchange ideas and listen to professionals from the industry on panels and discussions. Some stories talked about on today's show were: 1. The NYPD is investigating a deadly stabbing on a subway platform in the Bronx. Police say someone stabbed two men - one 25, the other 28 - at the Morrison Avenue/Soundview station. The attack happened just after 4:30 a.m. Saturday on the 6 train southbound platform. 2. The NYPD have charged five teenage boys in connection with a brutal gang assault and robbery caught on camera in Brooklyn. The NYPD told WABC that the five boys, ranging in age from 14 to 17 years old, turned themselves at the 77th precinct. All five were charged as minors with robbery and assault. Their fate will be decided in Family Court. 3. Blueprints for the original World Trade Center are on sale until Sunday at the New York International Antiquarian Book Fair. The James Cummins Bookseller team says the set includes over 500 plans and is the largest for the Twin Towers ever offered for sale. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/brandon-julien/support

This is part-two of a birthday salute to the late Glenn Miller. I have done other programs on the Miller band highlighting his hit recordings. On this edition of Big Band Bash I turned to a 2 CD set that I have that featured some of the early radio remotes by the band. Last time we heard a few remotes from the Paradise Restaurant in New York City and today we'll hear some remotes from the Cafe Rouge of the Hotel Pennsylvania and a 15 minute remote done over WEAF radio station. There is some good music on the show and most of the selections were never commercially recorded by Glenn. So we wish Glenn a happy birthday as he was born on March 1, 1904.
