Denne uge løb verdens største hundeudstilling "Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show" af stablen i New York. Visit us at shapedbydog.com Have you ever been triggered by social media dramas about dog training methods? It's likely something we all experience. There was a recent incident at Crufts that flowed into the social channels this week that had a lot of thoughts flooding into my brain, including the question of how can we, as a community of dog loving reinforcement-based trainers, show up as our best selves when we get triggered by things out of our control? I'd love to open a dialogue on this topic and want to convey the compassion and empathy I have for everybody when sharing my experiences and observations in this episode. I understand that, for many, it might be a difficult conversation. In this episode you'll hear: • About fog training, controversy and social media dramas. • That we can all be triggered by differing dog training methods. • Thoughts on the core values of reinforcement-based training. • Why I'm not the same person or dog trainer I was 30 years ago. • My experience with being a guest on a podcast with a balanced dog trainer. • Insights into the evolution of dog training perspectives over time. • Why I called Jean Donaldson and had an enlightening conversation. • That we need grace and compassion for ourselves, and the big question. So much has happened in and around Madison Square Park -- the leafy retreat at the intersections of Broadway, Fifth Avenue and 23rd Street -- that telling its entire story requires an extra-sized episode, in honor of our 425th episode.Madison Square Park was the epicenter of New York culture from the years following the Civil War to the early 20th century. The park was really at the heart of Gilded Age New York, whether you were rushing to an upscale restaurant like Delmonico's or a night at the theater or maybe just an evening at one of New York's most luxurious hotels like the Fifth Avenue Hotel or the Hoffman House. The park is surrounded by some of New York's most renowned architecture, from the famous Flatiron Building to the Metropolitan Life Insurance Tower, once the tallest building in the world. The square also lends its name, of course, to one of the most famous sports and performing venues in the world – Madison Square Garden. Its origins begin at the northeast corner of the park on the spot of a former railroad depot and near the spot of the birthplace of an American institution -- baseball. The park introduced New Yorkers to the Statue of Liberty ... or at least her forearm and torch. It stood silently over the bustling park while prize-winning dogs were championed at the very first Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show nearby, held at Gilmore's Gardens, the precursor to Madison Square Garden.Today the region north of the park is referred to as NoMad, which recalls life around Madison Square during the Gilded Age with its high-end restaurant and hotel scene.Tom and Greg invite you on this time-traveling escapade covering over 200 years of history. From the days of rustic creeks and cottages to the long lines at the Shake Shake. From Franconi's Hippodrome to the dazzling cologne fountains of Leonard Jerome (Winston Churcill's grandfather).Visit the website for more information. This episode was edited by Kieran GannonFURTHER LISTENING RELATED TO THIS SHOW-- The Delmonico Way with the Gilded Gentleman and current Delmonico's proprietor Max Tucci -- The Murder of Stanford White-- The Flatiron Building

Hailing from Palm Springs, California, this six-year-old male became the first of his breed to achieve this esteemed honor. Originally bred for hare tracking in the Vendee region of western France, Buddy Holly's triumph marks a significant milestone for the petit basset griffon Vendeen breed. Janice Hayes, Buddy Holly's co-owner and handler, expressed her astonishment at their victory, stating, "I never thought PBGV would do this. Buddy Holly truly embodies the essence of a champion show dog." Each breed showcased at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show represents the culmination of years of artificial selection, carefully refining and enhancing specific traits inherited from their ancestral wolves. The competition's participants were classified into seven distinct groups to determine the ultimate best in show finalists: hound, toy, non-sporting, herding, sporting, working, and terrier. Buddy Holly emerged as the winner of the hound group, showcasing his exemplary qualities within his breed. The runner-up, receiving the prize for reserve best in show, was awarded to Rummie, a Pekingese from the toy group. Bred and owned by David Fitzpatrick, Rummie demonstrated the exceptional characteristics that epitomize the breed. The judges meticulously evaluated the dogs by examining them up close, physically interacting with them, and observing how the handlers led them around the floor. The dogs were assessed based on breed standards, including appearance, temperament, size, coat, and other defining characteristics. The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, which traces its origins back to 1877, has grown into a highly anticipated annual event and a staple on television broadcasts. This year, due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the show took place at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York, the site of the renowned U.S. Open tennis tournament. In previous years, the event was traditionally held at Madison Square Garden in Midtown Manhattan but was relocated to a smaller venue at Lyndhurst Mansion as a precautionary measure. Buddy Holly's groundbreaking victory not only solidifies his place in dog show history but also serves as an inspiration to future generations of petit basset griffon Vendeen enthusiasts. Reference article:https://www.reuters.com/lifestyle/dog-named-buddy-holly-is-first-its-breed-win-westminster-show-2023-05-10/ https://tw.stock.yahoo.com/news/%E5%9C%96%E8%BC%AF-%E7%8B%97%E7%95%8C%E5%A5%A7%E6%96%AF%E5%8D%A1-%E8%A5%BF%E6%95%8F%E5%AF%BA%E7%8A%AC%E5%B1%95%E7%99%BB%E5%A0%B4-%E9%80%99%E9%9A%BB%E6%AF%9B%E5%AD%A9%E9%A6%96%E5%A5%AA%E5%86%A0-095309716.html Powered by Firstory Hosting
The caliber and talent of dogs competing at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is top-notch. Most of these dogs (and their humans) practice, compete, and work for months (and indeed, years) to get to this pinnacle of dog competition. On a warm spring day in Queens, I learned firsthand just how important our relationship with our dogs can be. Especially when times get tough. Surprisingly, these lessons were taught by the “slowest” timed dog at the agility trials… And I want to share these lessons with you because we all need some reminders about what really matters with our four-legged friends.

Also, this weekend, 64 million Turkish voters will choose their next leader. WFSB's Roger Susanin was on the phone with Chaz and AJ to talk about the start of the Traveler's Championship. The guys tried to think of ways the game of golf could be made just a little more entertaining. (0:00) Even Martha Stewart loves a good hot dog. Chaz and Connoisseur Media CEO Jeff Warshaw will be heading to one of the state's famous dog joints tomorrow for lunch, but narrowed it down to two for this morning's conversation. (17:54) Jimmy Koplik talked about the recently announced Judas Priest show with Queensryche, and tried to figure out why Jim Bozzi missed three consecutive days of private Sammy Hagar practices at the Oakdale. (29:23) Jumping worms, and now Asian long-horned ticks. Dr. Gayle Ridge was on to explain the potential impact these ticks can have, and Tuni was on to talk about "Trumpet" the crowned winner at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. (47:19) Yesterday, AJ was very confident he could use novelty tiny hands and eat food with no problem. Today, he got a chance to prove his point. The 2021 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is happening this weekend, June 12-13, in Tarrytown, NY! On this week's episode of the Good Dog Pod, host Laura Reeves is joined by Allison Alexander, who has been an All-Breed Professional Handler for over 30 years. She is also the founder of the https://www.leadingedgedogshowacademy.com/ (Leading Edge Dog Show Academy). What has changed about Westminster this year? Westminster is usually held in February in New York City's Madison Square Garden. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, it is being held in Tarrytown on the historic Lyndhurst Estate. In addition, the number of dog shows that usually happen across the country were reduced from several thousands to a few hundred. The new show date and scarcity of dog shows means that Westminster this year will be extra exciting because of the potential for surprise contenders! What are some reasons that this year's show has the opportunity to be one of the best yet? The first reason that comes to mind for Allison and Laura is the Best in Show Judge, the renowned Patricia Craig Trotter. Trotter has been breeding, showing, and judging dogs for seven decades. Her presence in the show ring is highly anticipated, and is a sign that this will be an iconic year for Westminster. Another reason is that four new breeds have been introduced to Westminster - the Barbet, Biewer Terrier, Belgian Laekenois, and Dogo Argentino. Find out more information about them https://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/media-center-content/new-breeds-for-2021 (here). What breeds and dogs do Allison and Laura have their eyes on? Both believe that there are some exemplary dogs in the Samoyed, Irish Setter, English Springer Spaniel, and Lagotto Romagnolo breeds. They are also paying close attention to the Toy Group, namely the Pekingese and Havanese breeds. However, with so many changes this year, it's hard even for the two experts to predict which dogs have the best shot at Best in Show. What is the schedule for this weekend? On Saturday, June 12, we will see the Hound, Toy, Non-Sporting, and Herding Groups. On Sunday, June 13, we will see the Sporting, Working, Terrier Groups, and finally Best in Show. This weekend will be broadcasted on the FOX network. Check out the https://www.westminsterkennelclub.org/2021-dog-show-general-information/2021-fox-sports-television-schedule (Westminster website) for more information on the schedule and broadcasting. Despite all the changes to Westminster this year, Allison and Laura believe that the fact that the show is happening in June instead of the typical February poses a unique timeline for the world of dog shows, with Westminster now being an opportunity to say hello to new dogs instead of only bidding goodbye to retiring ones. *Allison mistakenly stated that the Pekingese is of Japanese origin; we recognize that the breed is actually of Chinese origin. Will you be attending Westminster 2021? Join us for a Breeder Appreciation Party on Friday, June 11th. The event will be outdoors, at Hudson Anchor Rooftop in Tarrytown, NY. There will be free food, drinks, live music and giveaways. And better yet: dogs are welcome!
