BenGreenfieldFitness.com/donnamills You've no doubt heard me talk on podcasts before about my epic massages. We're talking essential oils, carefully selected musical tracks for healing the body, an acoustic sound healing table, a pulsed electromagnetic field mat, and a variety of specific plant medicine compounds and supplements for relaxing the body and turning a massage into a full body, mind and spiritual reboot and cleansing. But I haven't talked much about the wizard (wizardess, I should say) behind-the-scenes. Her name is Donna Mills, and she is my massage therapist, the most unique and talented therapist I've ever worked with, and my guest on this podcast. Donna lives in the aesthetically stunning Pacific Northwest, specifically in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. She is a woman committed to all things that elevate human consciousness. She is a practitioner of the healing arts, an advocate for civil conversations, and a community educator. Donna is the founder of HumanWell Integrative Healing where she sees private clients healing through trauma and grief. On the community consulting side of HumanWell, Donna designs integrative workplace wellness programs for large and small businesses. The name HumanWell was created out of her unwavering need to know “How do we human well? We can see where we are missing the mark in society, but where and how are we getting it right?” Donna is a social healing practitioner, a narrative disruptor, and a cultural change agent. She is here to invite society into a deeper conversation about civility and connectivity. She believes that, “and justice for all” means just that. For all. She is a fierce advocate for a new narrative of economic justice that elevates our collective human wellness and ability to thrive. Donna is a Lay Pastoral Minister through the Unitarian Universalist Association and is ordained to perform many celebrations of life, from partner unions to end of life doula services. In this work she gently guides humans through the sacred journey of living and dying. She is often called upon to share her insightful wisdom on the divine, and serves this world with a deep commitment to humanity. Donna aligns and connects to Source Spirit as High Priestess in her Pagan faith. She also describes herself as a mystic, a tarot reader, an intuitive healer, and a conscious thought leader for these changing times. She practices a very intentful and cyclical lifestyle that includes loads of joy, playful exploration, good food, and always, always, more beautiful humans. She excels at growing food and wild foraging, loves to be on the water, is a collector of smiles, and can be found spending teatime with her favorite feline, Professor Moosey Softpaws. Although having more events on the books certainly gets your business name out there, is it really what you want? Growing your wedding business bigger isn't always better, and in this week's episode of the This Week In Weddings podcast, we're chatting with a wedding photographer who discovered just that. Wedding photographer Donna Von Bruening grew her business to more than 100 weddings in a year, then realized being overworked with little free time on her calendar wasn't the life she wanted. After some work with a business coach to get to the bottom of what she wanted her business to look like, she scaled back, eliminated some overhead, and reduced her workload while increasing her profits. About our guest:  Recognized as one of the South’s premier wedding photographers, Donna Von Bruening provides a bespoke and sincere photographic experience for her cherished clients.   People are drawn to her striking, clean imagery of relationships and emotion…between people and places. A graduate of The Ohio State University School of Journalism, she has found success with her photojournalistic approach for 18 years. Her work is featured regularly in print and online; however, she cares most about how her clients feel when they hold her prints in their hands.   Donna calls the salty Savannah marshes home, where the light is gold, but travels often for client events. She cherishes her husband of 21 years, her two teenage sons and their Cavapoo, Archie. In this episode, listeners will hear about: Donna's background and experience in the wedding industry How Donna's business grew over time by adding associate photographers to her roster What Donna's business looked like at the busiest point, doing more than 100 weddings in a year The steps Donna took to intentionally scale back her business, taking on fewer events and having a smaller team Want to connect with Donna? It’s not always easy to spot the path you’re meant to take, even when it’s laid out, right in front of you. Sometimes, you just can’t see it… and yet, your instincts tell you it’s there. So when you’re provided with a shot to give it a try, you somehow know to take it. And, once taken, it’s abundantly clear that you’re exactly where you’re meant to be. This is the path Donna Barton Brothers took to become one of the most successful female jockeys of all time.   The daughter of one of the US’s first licensed female jockeys who, to this day, is revered as a living legend. The sister of two successful jockeys in their own right. Married to a top trainer. And herself still numbered among the most successful female jockeys of all time, Donna not only recognizes the role Thoroughbred racing has played throughout her life – she is extraordinarily grateful for the people, the industry, and for the horses, themselves.    These days, as Donna says, she has the best job on Earth – reporting for ESPN, NBC Sports, and TVG Network, the victories, as well as the heartbreaks, and the behind-the-barn stories of the very people she’s called family, friends, and colleagues throughout her life. And she does it with the same intensity and determination – and, now, terrific joy – that she once burst from the starting gates on the back of a sleek Thoroughbred.     Topic of Discussion: [1:49] When racing became Donna’s passion. [5:45] Did Donna ever read any of Walter Farley’s books? [7:50] Donna’s first horse — a Shetland pony. [10:25] Donna’s journey with horse racing and what it has meant to her. [12:13] How horse racing led to meeting her husband. [13:15] Being a jockey — not just a profession, but a lifestyle. [18:35] The gamble in every horse race: the danger of being a jockey. [23:01] The recognition of mortality vs. the joy of riding. [26:58] About Donna’s mother. [28:20] Sharing her success with her mother, the 6th licensed female jockey in the U.S. [30:30] About Hennessy, one of the most famous horses Donna rode, and the 1995 Breeders' Cup Juvenile race against Unbridled’s Song. [30:33] A cute story about the pony Elise bought for her daughter: a small Welsh pony mare named Little Bit. [35:37] The horses that stand out in Donna’s memory and the rapport jockeys need to build with each individual horse. [39:57] Donna’s funny but touching story about a horse she rode, Trick Artist. [42:50] The thing about being a great jockey according to Donna. [44:08] Why Donna thinks the Triple Crown has proven to be so elusive. [47:07] Donna’s description of what a "stalking position" is and overall racing strategies. [49:04] The lack of presence of women in racing and what Donna thinks might factor into this. [55:21] CNN’s video on female jockeys and how it struck Elise; the apparent attitudes about female jockeys. [57:47] How Donna made the move into her current position of racing correspondent. [1:02:04] How Donna manages to remain professionally detached in her interviews. [1:04:27] The incredible experience of talking with the winning riders and how Donna manages to squeeze in all her questions in the small timeframe TV news allots for each interview. [1:09:04] Donna’s measure of success: what success looks like to her. [1:11:35] What’s next for Donna. [1:13:30] Donna’s advice to young girls interested in becoming involved in horse racing and the challenges young women face getting into the industry.
