"Vaginal steaming is a remembrance": From unexplained irregular bleeding to deep womb connection with Jessica Birnbaum Pratt

Click here to send me your Q's, comments, lovenotes, or a quick message here :) What does it mean to connect to your womb, anyway?  I mean, is that a practical thing or totally intangible? It's a fair question, and one I would have asked many years ago when I was completely and utterly disconnected from the part of my body "where the sun don't shine."It took me many years to find my way there. It's interesting, a couple days ago I was in a circle of colleagues and one of them directed us to "journey to our wombspace" but gave us no guided visualization or any cues at all on how to do that. I was able to go there, but only because I have cultivated so much connection over the years. I was thinking that 15+ years ago, I would have had no clue how to do that and would have absolutely just fallen asleep during that "journey."So... how does one cultivate relationship to their wombspace? Well there are many ways. Cycle tracking, guided visualizations, sexual healing, trauma work, pelvic bodywork, birth work, and also.... intentional practices like vaginal steaming. Which is what this week's episode is all about. Jessica Birnbaum Pratt found her way from unexplained abnormal vaginal bleeding to a deep relationship with her womb through the practice of vaginal (or yoni) steaming. The first time she awkwardly explored the practice of steaming her vulva and pelvic floor with an herbal blend, she felt a sense of "remembrance."And it's true, this practice IS ancient. And also can be translated into a modern context. It's got physiologic therapeutic benefits (from enhancing circulation, to softening tissues) but beyond that, it's also got some deep emotional and spiritual layers too. For Jessica, it was the elemental and spiritual qualities that really supported her sense of relationship and connection with her wombspace.Listen to learn:what vaginal steaming is + some of the history of the practicesome DIY styles for yoni steaming at homehow Jessica went from being told she might be going through "early menopause" to having children!what Jessica thinks the cause of her abnormal vaginal bleeding waswhy vaginal steaming is more than just physical healingabout the steam seat she designedResources:Free womb connection+clearing guided visualizationToday's shownotes: Get links to Leiamoon steam seat + Jessica's workEpisode 18: Herbal Uterine TonicsEpisode 19: The importance of softeningEpisode 43: Vaginal steaming w Julia Demillones MooreIf you loved this episode, share it with a friend, or take a screenshot and share on social media and tag me @herbalwombwisdom.  And if you love this podcast, leave a rating & write a review! The practice of vaginal steaming, also known as pelvic steaming, yoni steaming, or herbal steam, has been around for centuries and is gaining popularity again. Keli Garza is an expert on vaginal steaming, its practice's history, and its benefits. The practice involves sitting over steaming water infused with herbs, which is believed to improve circulation and provide various health benefits. While there are no scientific studies to support the claims, the practice has been used as an alternative form of self-care and midwifery care. Its popularity has surged in recent years, with celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow promoting it. Vaginal steaming is the least invasive and lowest-risk intervention compared to other medical procedures. The historical accounts of gynecological remedies, such as Tra, a book written by the first female physician in Europe, involved vaginal steaming. Women's contributions to medicine have often been overlooked throughout history, as highlighted by Keli Garza. It was not until the late 19th century that a law had to be passed to include women in medical studies. Women who did attend medical school were often ridiculed and discouraged from pursuing surgical specialties. Its popularity has surged in recent years, with celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow promoting it.Vaginal steaming is the least invasive and lowest-risk intervention compared to other medical procedures. The Crimean War helped create an environment where women had a place in medicine, but only as nurses who took orders from doctors.Visit the show notes for more: https://www.BelovedHolistics.com/podcast/117Learn More & Connect with Keli Garza:Website: https://www.steamychick.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/steamychickOffer: Steamychick.InstituteIn this episode:[00:02:00] Vaginal steaming, pelvic steaming, or yoni steaming involves sitting over steaming water with herbs to increase circulation and provide health benefits.Used traditionally for self-care and midwifery care and is sometimes considered a form of gynecology to treat various gynecological issues.Despite concerns about safety, if done appropriately vaginal steaming is considered low-risk and has been reported to provide relief for conditions such as cervical dysplasia, chronic UTIs, bad bacterial vaginosis, fibroids, and endometriosis.[00:06:00] Steaming has been used throughout history for gynecological remedies, including in European and Chinese history, as well as by midwives and women's home remedies.Gynecology has shifted to a surgery-based practice for hundreds of years until the present time.Women healers have long used these types of practices, but modern medicine has become overly reliant on pharmaceuticals and surgery.[00:19:00] A study would find measurable differences in prostate size after steaming.Society may undervalue women's quality of life and women's health concerns.People are paying for vaginal steaming out of their own pockets is a testament to the positive effects it has on their quality of life.[00:40:00] Providing a safe and comforting environment through pelvic steaming can release natural oxytocin, which can prevent interventions and improve maternal mortality rates.Oxytocin is a vital hormone in the body,...

Vaginal steaming. Yoni steaming. Pelvic steaming. Whatever name you use for this practice, it's likely you've heard of it, and maybe even tried it. Or... maybe this concept is totally new to you.At the most basic level, it's like making a strong tea and sitting over it with a bare pelvic floor. Almost as simple as it can get. And really, it's ancient. Steam itself is one of the easiest ways to receive benefits from herbs (especially aromatic ones). And in my mind is an underused form of hydrotherapy that was likely practiced by MOST of our ancestral lineages. But over the past few years, there's been a bit of a vaginal steaming revolution. And I think for good reason. It's a deeply healing practice that has many benefits, and certified vaginal steam facilitator Julia Demillones Moore shares all about it.Listen to this week's episode to learn:basics on how to steam + some simple herbal combinations to trywhat kinds of conditions benefit from steaming (hint: A LOT)when you definitely want to avoid steamingwhat the best times of your cycle are to steamsome reasons you may want to be cautious or work with a practitioner3 common myths + misconceptions about steaminga simple tip on how to steam when you're traveling!Resources:Check out the shownotes for all of Julia's links + those mentioned: Herbal steaming for pelvic healthLearn to track your own cycle so you can safely steam at the most ideal times of your cycle with this FREE cycle tracking guideEpisode 5: Are you ovulating? WINE! podcast is a biweekly conversation with practitioners, providers, patients & healers about complex reproductive medicine & women's health challenges, the value of an integrative approach to these challenges, many of the women's health topics you're already thinking about & uncomfortable talking about & my personal favorite... WINE!Vaginal steaming is a traditional self-care practice whereby someone sits or kneels over a warm pot of boiled water, gently exposing the entire pelvic region to the rising steam. To enhance the effect of the steaming, clinically approved organic herbs may be infused in the water to give the steam additional therapeutic properties. Vaginal steaming is a universal practice utilized on most of the continents including Europe, Africa, Asia, Oceana, and the Americas. Vaginal steam practicers have popularized the terms "pelvic steaming", "perineal steaming", and "peristeaming" in order to utilize more inclusive terminology.  About our guest:April is from a small town in south Florida called Moore Haven where she was reared by her mother & grandmother.  Pampering her grandmother after a long day of caring for the elderly, she developed a passion for tending to others.  She decided to pursue a career focusing on skincare with the Aveda Institute (DC) as her  foundation. With a curriculum heavily rooted in Ayurvedic philosophy (where one learns to study the individual as a whole (spirit, body & soul), she soon developed an eye for seeing beyond the skin.  Facials and waxing turned into therapy sessions that revealed deep, emotional wounds that soap and water couldn't reach. Since hormonal breakouts became all too common & now having an interest in women's reproductive health and wellness, she could no longer ignore the call to serve women in a more intentional way.   Instead of placing her 10 years of serving and teaching in the beauty/wellness industry aside, she sees where it fits perfectly on her journey of purpose.   Mastering the art & science of healing  through touch (Raindrop Therapy), aromatherapy & Hydrotherapy (Vaginal Steam) at the Eudaimonia Center is where you'll find her.Resources Mentioned:Steamy ChickVaginal Steam ThroneCurrent Wine SelectionNext Week's Wine SelectionConnect with VinoBLU® Wine Bar:WebsiteInstagramFacebookTwitterThe hashtag for the podcast is #nourishyourflourish. What is vaginal steaming - aka pelvic steaming - aka yoni steaming? Well, if you have a pelvic floor, steaming is for you! This ancient practice is gaining popularity in the US, and is something that can support women throughout the lifespan - first menstruation, fertility, labor prep, postpartum recovery, menopause and post-menopause. I talk with Adrienne about how steaming promotes a healthy menstrual cycle, aids with labor preparation (which MUST be done under the guidance of a practitioner!), and can help with postpartum pelvic floor healing. We talk through the 4th Trimester Steam Study, a foundational study that showed promising results when it comes to many markers of postpartum healing. We also talk about the importance of self-care, rest, and how steaming promotes those things with a non-invasive, healing practice. Other cultures honor the sacred window of the first 30-40 days postpartum, but Americans don't. IMPORTANT: When steaming, you have to use the right tools - the right herbs, the right amount of time… work with a practitioner - Adrienne does virtual visits with people all over the world and can set you up for success!Connect with Adrienne:www.moonessence.life Facebook, Twitter, Instagram: moonessenceMERead the 4th trimester steam study: steamychick.com/4thtristudyCheck out the Fourth Trimester Bodies Project on Instagram: @stopcensoringmotherhood and @4thtribodiesInterested in participating in the next 4th trimester steam study?Email fullbloomwellness603@gmail.com or adrienne@moonessence.life Questions? In this episode we talk vaginal steaming and oh so much more! The conversation uses this topic as a way to address: taking control of your health, embodiment, realigning and reconnecting in tiny ways making those revolutions and evolutions, connecting to our feminine power and our collective experience. We talk vaginal steaming basics: what it is, how it is used and what for and how it can connect women with their bodies and healing in a physical and emotional way. 1,000 and 1,000's of women are benefitting from this ancient practice. So why then is that the mainstream media, doctors and medical professionals are so afraid of this practice? Do they really think we will sit to close and let the steam burn us? Do they really think that we have no sense, no agency, no .. Or…is that there is something else. Sierra and I explore it all in this episode of the Life Cycle Lady Podcast If you want to learn more about Sierra and what she is up to or to order vaginal steaming herbs Check her out at http://www.soulvibrance.com/#_l_1hm For her ayurvedic wisdom you can find her at https://www.cultivatebalance.com/

Today on the show we have Keli, AKA Steamy Chick, the woman behind the new yet ancient vaginal steaming movement. I have been hearing women rave about the benefits of vaginal steaming for years and was thrilled to find out this badass mama had also free birthed her two children. Keli shares how unacceptable she was treated by her doctor in her first pregnancy and how she ultimately decided she wanted to rely on her own instincts and see what birth was really about. And of course, we get into vaginal steaming and how it can be used for postpartum healing.
