Andy catches up with Marko in this super chill episode of Beyond Synth, where they dive into all the usual nonsense — candy cravings, weird chocolate bar names, and the eternal mystery of Tim Hortons. There's also a solid chunk of video game talk: Marko dishes on finishing Baldur's Gate 3, Robocop, and Evil Within 2 (aka “the milk game”), while Andy finally gets deep into Metal Gear Solid V and rants about how good old games still look and play today. They bond over overpriced game releases, modding drama, and how emulators often outdo the actual companies. Of course, it's all soundtracked by killer synth tunes! just two buds talking games, music, and life. We've done it! We've finished the Metal Gear Solid games. Time to wrap things up as we say goodbye to Quiet (questioning why we were supposed to be ashamed of words and deeds in the first place in the process), learning the truth (that we totally already knew) about Venom Snake, and hearing for the first time in a long time from our ol' pal Zero. We may be finished with the Metal Gear Solid games, but we got lots of things we plan to cover going forward. As promised, next time will be our "victory lap" for finishing the Solid games: we'll be playing through Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. Episode 47: Real Snake VS Snake Snake
With the Skull Face taken care of, it's time to direct our attention towards Mother Base. Like finding out what sort of shady stuff Eli and the child soldiers are up to (and also thinking about what they could have been up to if the development team got more time to make this game), and learning about just how awful Huey Emmerich really is. Oh, and Master Miller's busy trying to break into the food industry. Episode 46: Kazuhira Miller's Nasty Patty
31 missions/episodes later, we've come to the end of Chapter 1 of The Phantom Pain. It's time to get to the bottom of what's happening with the virus with the help of a new (but also very old) ally, confront Skull Face via the back of a jeep, and put a stop to Sahelanthropus, but not so much of stop that we can't bring it home to Mother Base when we're done. Episode 45: Awkward Jeep Ride
So last time we rescued a bunch of child soldiers. Now, what MGS character do we know was a child soldier around this time. That's right! It's Eli. You know, Eli. Or perhaps you know him by his other name: The White Mamba. No? Well that's ok. No time to worry about him anyway because now everyone on Mother Base is dying of a mystery virus, so we should probably try to sort that out first. Episode 44: Super Baby Method
Last time we saw the return of Huey and Paz. Now it's time for the return of another MGS icon: child soldiers. After we rescue some of those, it's off to a reunion with Skull Face which gets rudely interrupted by The Man on Fire and baby Psycho Mantis. Luckily, they've decided to fight us in an area conveniently filled with many water sources to douse him with. Episode 43: [Cowboy Voice] Boss...
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we start a new series on Heroes of Might and Magic. We talk about the boardgame of it all and where the vibes are with this one, among other topics. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Some standard, some campaign Issues covered: hearing the journey and thoughts of our listeners, deep regrets about Megaman, games that scare us, learning the patterns, hearing about the Final Fantasy thoughts, learning about FF15 at two different publishers, a game you can't pick up and play for an hour, seeking out a full game experience, dialing down the map challenge, a more dense map, lots of map options, seeing a new map, considering whether the maps are generated algorithmically, playing a little too disposably, how this game might be played, lack of boardgame clarity, extreme depth, depth of the tactical mode, opacity and complexity, the aesthetics of the time, dormant franchises vs active ones, lacking iteration and interaction on the design and with the players, possible outcomes from opacity, balance in defending the castles, how slowly should I move on the map, getting over the hump, getting services in The Sims, kind words about the 'cast. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Kaeon, Biostats, CalamityNolan, Megaman, Day of the Tentacle/Maniac Mansion, Contra, Cuphead, Andrew Kirmse, Full Throttle, Dark Souls, Belmont, Final Fantasy (series), Jason Schreier, Mark Garcia, LostLake, Metal Gear Solid V, Crystal Dynamics, Tomb Raider (2013), Square Enix, Eidos, Halo Infinite, 343 Industries, The Sims, X-COM, Soren Johnson, Civilization, Jurassic Park, Wizardry, Ubisoft, New World Computing, Infogrammes, Dwarf Fortress, Avalon Hill, Universal Paperclips, Frank Lantz, G, Tristan, Stone Librande, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers. Next time: More of HOMM! Twitch: timlongojr Discord DevGameClub@gmail.com
With Quiet locked up on Mother Base, we can now do the thing we were trying to in the first place: extract Huey from Cipher's Afghanistan base. Maybe in all the time since Ground Zeroes he's chilled out a bit. Maybe he regrets his involvement in all of that. Or you know, maybe he sucks more than ever. Let's find out! All of that plus an unexpected (and undeserved) reunion with someone else from Ground Zeroes. Who could it be? Episode 42: Portable Ops Nation
We've reached a very important moment in The Phantom Pain. Our journey to regretting our words and deeds starts here. That's right; it's time to recruit Quiet. But first we must face off in a sniper duel against her, listen to Mommy Miller and Daddy Ocelot argue over whether to keep her, and then watch as she snipes a jet out of the sky from a moving helicopter. Episode 41: Revolver Octopus
We're back at it with The Phantom Pain, and now that things are starting to pick up at Mother Base, it's time for some classic sneaking missions with Venom Snake culminating in a reunion with our old friend Skull Face, who's got a fun(?) new look, and a big ol' Metal Gear at his disposal. Also Snake and Ocelot decide to adopt. Episode 40: "Do it (Defecate)" now available
We've tasted the appetizer, and it's on to the main course as we begin The Phantom Pain. Nine years after Ground Zeroes, Snake is back, full of Venom, and ready to build up yet another offshore military base, but first we've gotta rescue an old friend with the help of our favorite cowboy-coded gunslinger. Episode 39: Booby Snake
We're moving on to MGSV, but before we can start on the main entree of The Phantom Pain, we have to play through the appetizer that is Ground Zeroes. Despite being a bit of a prologue and teaser for what's to come in The Phantom Pain, there is a lot to dig into with Ground Zeroes, bad and good. If you know anything about GZ, you know exactly what I mean. Enjoy this extra beefy episode as we work through on thoughts and feelings about this strange entry in the series. Huge content warning for discussion of torture, organ removal, violent surgery, and rape. Episode 38: Big Boss: My Favorite War Criminal
Hey Podtimists, Somehow, a summer cold has returned. So you know what that means it's another Dayquil episode. Time to lock in and talk about Metal Gear Solid and also Honkai Star Rail?? Also we dove into the wonderful visual novel Arcade Spirits which was suggested to us by listener Jonathan. Spel som nämns i avsnittet: Mega Man, Metroid, Metal Gear Solid V, Overwatch, Bioshock, Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice, Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Baldur's Gate, Divinity: Original Sin, Resident Evil VII, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Halo Infinite
Ben Whaley's Toward a Gameic World: New Rules of Engagement from Japanese Video Games (U Michigan Press 2023) examines the pathbreaking engagement strategies of four Japanese video games produced between 2002 and 2015. Each of these “persuasive games” deploys a distinct strategy of engagement to push players to engage with real-world social issues and traumas: Disaster Report (2002) takes on natural disasters, Catherine (2011) addresses Japan's declining birthrate and aging population, Metal Gear Solid V (2015, after the March 2011 Fukushima triple disaster) takes on nuclear proliferation, and The World Ends with You (2007) faces the issue of social withdrawal. These games differ in genre, platform, and mechanics, but as Whaley shows, they share an interest in using the immersive, multimedia, boundary-crossing experience of gaming to create an emotive, “persuasive” experience that prods gamers to engage with these “IRL” issues in new ways. We've done a lot of movie reviews over the years, but it's kind of fun that we're getting into some gaming reviews as well. Our more frequent cohosts seems to be more versed in the gaming world than in the movie world. So, fact-check-wise, MGSV TPP wasn't actually released in 2018. It was more like 2015. But otherwise the review stands. Apologies that we reference a sale on the game that ended before the podcast was posted, but timey-wimeyness is all part of the fun of podcasting. Listen in to hear Mark and Jacob's review of the game they both recently enjoyed. If you want to fully appreciate the closing line of the show, just look up Snake's signature line... #MetalGear #MGSV #TPP
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we turn to a second bonus interview with Patrick Redding, credited as Story Designer on Far Cry 2, though we would tend to call that a Narrative Designer today. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Podcast breakdown: 0:45 Interview 1:16:50 Break 1:17:20 Outro Issues covered: happening to start listening at the right time, a background in physics, avoiding computer programming, applying problem-solving skills, hearing about new media, exploring story and design through tabletop, thinking about how to incorporate story into existing games, coming on to an existing team, getting thrown into the deep end, why you'd drop the PS2, string of pearls, wanting to reinvent the wheel, tearing apart the macro structure of the game and piecing it back together, moving from camera designer to narrative designer as a field promotion, shipping another retail game while joining a second, not designing the story but tightening the linkage between authored content and player-driven play, waterfall vs iterative and maintaining consistency, making a shooter and not an rpg, systemically reflecting the choices of PCs and growing out that modularity to the whole game, hitting thresholds and dealing with levels of chaos to expose the Jackal, freedom being required in time *and* space, anteing up your buddies, counterpressure and infamy, analog parameters becoming indistinguishable from random, the main wager of putting your buddy in play, a real deal-breaker for the PC, carrying through everything to achieve a pressure dynamic, having far more underlying variables to affect, the simulation of sensibility, offloading computation to the player brain for narrative meaning, creating a narrative from a sports team, the difficulty of getting parseable human interactions in games, thinking about the approach and where the tension is coming from, pie-slice approach and shells of interaction, the emotional whiplash of going from closing mode and tempo to passivity, the big switch, enjoying the camaraderie, narrative design vs writing, the emergence of narrative design in the industry, changing expectations when you ship. We've narrowed down some of our distaste for certain popular games, especially from the past: they were made for kids. And kids' media can be sublime! But what makes a piece of kids' media, game or not, good or bad? What turns us off? How do they approach issues of ethics or morality? How much do they condescend? We also answer your questions and read your responses to September's games: BugSnax, Metal Gear Solid V, and Carrion. October's games are: - Devotion - Strangeland - The Evil Within 2 November's games are: - Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - Superhot - Half-Life: Alyx This week's highlighted creator is an upcoming experimental RPG called Purgatory Dungeoneer (https://store.steampowered.com/app/1963010/Purgatory_Dungeoneer/), which you can wishlist on Steam today. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Far Cry 2. Sections played: Several more hours Issues covered: variations on the same song, high degree of friction, a simulation of a place, allowing for authorship within the simulation, clashing of systems, not mattering which side you choose, making your choices matter, not spending your time doing what you want to be doing, running into natural boundaries, playing jazz or the jam band, having to switch up weapons, not having to switch weapons, not quite getting the recipe right/seeing the proof of concept, the noodling before the chord changes, time of information spread in this vs deeper stealth games, not having the clarity of information, leaning more into the power fantasy, running out of resources in the friction, game scale opposing stealth, engaging with the buddy system, buddies personifying ways of improving, losing some buddies, expendable buddies, boosting Japan's quality control, balancing stability and forward momentum in development, the impossibility of keeping your politics out of games, having to have a theory when you are out past what is known, having to make decisions in development, the nonviolent ending, having to feel balance in games. Venom Snake still has some fights to fight, as we pick up Skull Face's trail in Afghanistan to experience the majority of what the Phantom Pain has to offer. As a genuine heads up, this episode might not be for you if you adore this game or Hideo Kojima's whole vibe. We clown on things while gushing about the play, which some people take us as completely hating the whole experience. If you will take that personally then please consider yourself forewarned. Thanks again to our executive producer Jade!
Thank you Jade! What do you do when there's a Kojima about? What do you do when a game has some of the best stealth action in video games, one of the most satisfying loops in video games, but punctuates it with some of the worst boss fights and clumsy exposition and plotting? It's a complicated game that gives us complicated feelings! Listen in if you want to hear us wrestle with Kojima's legacy, both as critics and as one current and one former fan. And if you want to support marginalized creators, check out Nine Noir Lives! A new point and click adventure game! https://www.nnlgame.com/
After almost 3 years, our final Metal Gear Solid game in The Top 100 list.. "Kept you waiting, huh?" join us as we discuss the very divisive 'Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain'. Was this a swan song for Kojima, or overrated rubbish?
the bog boys are back this time we've got dakota with us making his first appearance on a podcast! we cordially invite glenn greenwald to come on the show to bravely truthtell with us and then dive into MGSV to answer the important questions, including but not limited to is snake really bi-curious? did kojima blow up the world trade center? and what makes uncircumcised bullets so much cooler than cut rounds? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app
