We don't often get to cover joyful policy news on this podcast, so this week we're delighted to be discussing that rare thing: a European country that's investing serious money in culture. For three years, Ireland has been experimenting with paying artists, musicians and other creative workers a basic income. And guess what? The scheme has worked so well that they're keeping it going. But is the policy all it's cracked up to be? This week we speak to John Baker, a co-founder of the Equality Studies Centre at University College Dublin and one of the coordinators of Basic Income Ireland, about the logic and limits of Ireland's Basic Income for the Arts.    In sillier policy news, we're looking at why Slovakia has been regulating the speed of kids cycling on the pavement. And we're diving into Ukraine's massive corruption scandal: what exactly happened, and just how bad is it for Volodymyr Zelenskyy?    You can read interviews with the artists who've been receiving Ireland's Basic Income for the Arts here.   This podcast was brought to you in cooperation with Euranet Plus, the leading radio network for EU news. 2025-11-16 | Silicon Wafers 057 | DAILY UPDATES | Russia's war against Ukraine is being fought on a scale that few seem to imagine or comprehend, and that includes the scale of resources that are being consumed, from tanks to vehicles, people to artillery shells. The proportions are huge, and the scale is vast, so it should not come as a surprise that certain commodities essential to war are starting to run out. Artillery shells – the supply from North Korea that Russia depends on is running dry, but at the same time the wildly successful Czech initiative that supplies Ukraine is starting to fall apart. Today's episode is about shells – who has them, who doesn't, and how that may decide on whether Ukraine holds the line or is forced to cede more territory. Two stories:1. North Korea's shell pipeline to Russia is faltering – Ukraine's intelligence says Pyongyang has more than halved its artillery shipments as its own stockpiles run low. (The Kyiv Independent)2. Czechia's ammunition lifeline to Ukraine is in political limbo – a populist coalition led by Andrej Babiš walks into Prague promising “Czechia first” and casting doubt on the country's landmark shell initiative. 2025-11-13 | Silicon Wafers 054 | DAILY UPDATES | In today's episode we turn our focus to the Eastern front and try to tease out the truth from the tangled narratives emerging from the battle for Pokrovsk. This is a grinding struggle that seems to be entering its final stages, but the ever-shifting balance of the fight seems to be as much about controlling the narrative as it is about occupying territory. We're zeroing in on the contested city of Pokrovsk in Donetsk Oblast — still under Ukrainian control, but also still under relentless Russian pressure — and we'll cover the neglected frontline, in the neighbouring Zaporizhzhia Oblast, which is simultaneously seeing a push by Moscow's forces. These two theatres matter: because while all eyes are drawn to Pokrovsk, where Russia hopes to punch a breakthrough and Ukraine hopes to hold the line, Moscow is quietly advancing elsewhere, threatening to exploit the distraction. What, then, counts as “victory” for Russia when so much manpower and materiel is being expended to lay claim to a city that has essentially been reduced to rubble? In a way of attrition, can one side claim any kind of victory, when the price of defence is so high and the cost of attack so monstrously and irrationally large? ----------SOURCES: “Pokrovsk is not captured but remains Russia's main offensive target, Syrskyi says”, Kyiv Independent, 13 Nov 2025“Analysis: With all eyes on Pokrovsk, Russia drives forward in Zaporizhzhia Oblast”, Kyiv Independent, 12 Nov 2025“Ukraine withdraws from another settlement in Zaporizhzhia Oblast amid ongoing Russian offensive”, Kyiv Independent, 11 Nov 2025“Ukrainian forces pull back under fierce Russian pressure in Zaporizhzhia”, Al Jazeera, 12 Nov 2025“The situation is quite difficult — Russia captures 3 settlements in Zaporizhzhia Oblast amid ‘intense fighting'”, Kyiv Independent, 11 Nov 2025“War in Ukraine: Battle for Pokrovsk enters final phase”, Le Monde, 6 Nov 2025“Russia makes gains in southern Ukraine as it expands front-line attacks”, Associated Press, 12 Nov 2025“Ukraine deploys special forces to Pokrovsk in effort to hold key city”, The Guardian, 2 Nov 2025“Ukraine's top general denies encirclement claims in battle for Pokrovsk”, The Moscow Times, 13 Nov 2025“Ukraine withdraws from positions near five settlements in Zaporizhzhia region”, Ukrinform, 11 Nov 2025----------SILICON CURTAIN FILM FUNDRAISERA project to make a documentary film in Ukraine, to raise awareness of Ukraine's struggle and in supporting a team running aid convoys to Ukraine's front-line towns.https://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extras----------SILICON CURTAIN LIVE EVENTS - FUNDRAISER CAMPAIGN Events in 2025 - Advocacy for a Ukrainian victory with Silicon Curtainhttps://buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtain/extrasOur events of the first half of the year in Lviv, Kyiv and Odesa were a huge success. We'll break down what got hit, why Tuapse matters, and how Sea Baby and Magura drones, plus the Flamingo long-range missile program, fit into a winter of attrition against the Kremlin's oil cashflow and logistics. What happened last night in the Black Sea? Overnight, multiple Ukrainian unmanned surface vessels—call them USVs, call them robot boats — surged into Tuapse, one of Russia's critical Black Sea oil export hubs. Local videos showed at least two heavy blasts and fires inside the harbour area. The Kyiv Independent reports: “Russia's port town of Tuapse… was rocked by explosions… local Telegram channels reported an attack by Ukrainian sea drones,” adding that regional authorities later confirmed an attack and claimed they destroyed four USVs. They also admitted: “One of the unmanned boats detonated near the shoreline… the shock wave damaged the second-floor windows… a garage and a boat shed.” Though we suspect that much more stuff than this went boom. The award-winning English-language media outlet covers Ukraine and Eastern Europe for the rest of the world, and is celebrating its birthday with a campaign designed to boost its membership from 22,000 to 25,000 by the end of the year. This week's guest is the Kyiv Independent's Chief Operations Officer Zakhar Protsiuk. KI has reporters on the frontline of the war and an investigations unit covering Russian war crimes, but also covers Ukrainian business, culture and even travel. What struck Peter this week in speaking with Zakhar, is how focused he was on what we might consider the normal elements of building a media business. Of course we spoke about the war, but we spoke just as much about audience acquisition and retention, trust and churn.  Listen now to hear Kyiv Independent's origin story, whether it's possible to separate everyday media operations from the impacts of Russia's invasion, revenue diversification, and the brand's shift from donations to a membership model. In this compelling episode of Ukrainapodden, we're joined by Ukrainian journalist Anastasiia Lapatina, currently with Lawfare Media and formerly of The Kyiv Independent. Lapatina shares her unique perspective on the ongoing war, shedding light on critical issues often overlooked in Western discourse. She candidly discusses the challenge of Ukrainian representation, highlighting the imbalance where 'Russian opposition leaders' are often amplified, even when their statements, like Yulia Navalny's on military aid, prove problematic for Ukraine's cause. Lapatina offers invaluable advice to Western media and conference organizers: ensure equal representation, avoid joint panels that equate aggressor and victim, and delve deeper into the nuanced context of the conflict. The conversation extends to the long-term nature of the war, critiquing the West's 'strategic clarity' and its focus on theoretical 'peacekeeping' solutions without addressing the immediate realities on the front line. Lapatina also reflects on Ukraine's own historical struggles with corruption and how domestic issues have shaped its relationship with Western partners, acknowledging that Western nations have their own complex priorities. A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to the political turmoil surrounding Ukraine's anti-corruption bodies, NABU and SAPO. Lapatina details the controversial attempt by Zelensky's administration to undermine their independence, the swift, nationwide protests that followed, and the eventual reversal of the contentious law. This segment powerfully illustrates the unwavering commitment of Ukrainian civil society, especially its youth, to democratic principles and their 'immunity to authoritarianism.' Don't miss Lapatina's insights into her acclaimed podcast 'Escalation,' which meticulously chronicles the history of Ukraine-US relations since 1991, offering crucial context for understanding Ukraine's enduring fight for sovereignty and its path towards European integration. 2025-11-09 | Silicon Wafers 051 | DAILY UPDATES | Despite the profusion of stories we've covered, the battle for Pokrovsk, energy sanctions, and so on, the most important strategic angle on the war this winter is the attritional energy war. And it's unlike the Western attitude to the war throughout all these four years – to cede the escalation dominance to Russia, always pulling punches, in support for Ukraine, and never allowing its ally to land a decisive blow on Russia. Now Ukraine is takin off the gloves, because below the nuclear threshold, there is nothing holding back Russia's viciousness and violence. Ukraine is seeking to inflict greater costs on Russia in the energy war, than it can impose upon Ukraine. This ‘escalation' is the only way to make it clear to Putin he cannot win and is the only way to inflict economic and social costs that start to make Putin's brittle regime appear vulnerable to its internal audience. Nothing else will get through to Putin. Nothing at all. Ukraine's “doomsday lever”? Hitting the Yamal network — myth vs. math. There is an inescapable logic to the course of this existential escalation for Ukraine's existence. It starts with testing the theory of imposing blackouts and heating denial to smaller, non-strategic Russian towns. Belgorod, Vladimir, Voronezh. And this is happening now. The next stage is to test supporting infrastructure around Moscow – electricity substations, energy supply routes for fuel, gas and oil products. This is happening. Beyond that, are substantial and extended blackouts in smaller towns, then Moscow and St. Petersburg. But that's not the final arrow in Ukraine's quiver. It has a doomsday option – hitting Yamal Cross. If none of the other escalatory steps lead to an unconditional ceasefire, then I suggest it's a near certainly that we'll reach the doomsday stage for Moscow by end of this winter. ----------Partner on this video: KYIV OF MINE Watch the trailer now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arJUcE1rxY0'Kyiv of Mine' is a documentary series about Ukraine's beautiful capital, Kyiv. 2025-11-05 | Silicon Wafers 049 | DAILY UPDATES | Pokrovsk, the contested Donetsk rail-and-road hub has become the most consequential urban fight since Avdiivka, and the outcome of that fight may turn out to be instrumental for the outcome of the war, not only against Ukraine, but Russia's war against Western democracy. In today's episode, we are zooming in on the battle for Pokrovsk. We'll explain why Russia is so desperate to take it, what Ukraine is doing to hold it, the claims and counterclaims on the ground, and what happens next if Russia's offensive stalls — or if it succeeds. On Sunday, Valery Gerasimov, Russian chief of staff, told President Vladimir Putin his 2nd and 51st Combined Arms Armies were "advancing along converging axes" and "have completed the encirclement of the enemy" in Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad. He claimed 5,500 Ukrainian troops were surrounded. But Russian military reporters contradicted these claims, with one named "Military Informant" telling 621,000 Telegram subscribers, "There is simply no encirclement". Ukraine's Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi was categorical last Saturday: while the situation in Pokrovsk remains "hardest" for Ukrainian forces, there is no encirclement or blockade as Russia has claimed. He insisted a comprehensive operation to destroy and dislodge enemy forces from Pokrovsk is ongoing.----------Partner on this video: KYIV OF MINE Watch the trailer now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arJUcE1rxY0'Kyiv of Mine' is a documentary series about Ukraine's beautiful capital, Kyiv. 2025-11-02 | Silicon Wafers 046 | DAILY UPDATES | Deep strikes: HUR says it hit a military fuel pipeline near Moscow. Ukraine's military intelligence (HUR) says it struck the Koltsevoy pipeline — a 400-km ring feeding Russian forces — in the Moscow Oblast on Oct. 31, calling it a disruption to the supply of jet fuel and diesel flow. Local authorities in Zhukovsky cited “automatic equipment shutdowns” for the blackout — consistent with grid protection behaviour after a shock to the system. We've not seen Russian official confirmation of pipeline damage, but of course, the greater the damage and more strategic the impact, the less likely the Kremlin regime is to comment. (Kyiv Independent, Nov. 1)Overnight on October 31, 2025, Ukraine's military intelligence — HUR — took a swing not at the now familiar Russian oil refining facilities, but at the circulatory system that keeps Moscow's military logistics pumping. They hit the Koltsevoy petroleum-products pipeline — “koltsevoy” literally means ring — in Moscow Oblast's Ramensky district and blew out all three lines in a coordinated attack. HUR says the line is about 400 km long and moves gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel from refineries in Ryazan, Nizhny Novgorod, and Moscow to military consumers. Ukrainian officials called it a “serious blow” to Russian logistics. The implication is that a new, and highly strategic campaign has begun against the Russian war machine, and this fight is being taken deep into the home front. In this gripping episode, we're joined by Francis Farrell, an acclaimed journalist from The Kyiv Independent. He provides an urgent and unvarnished look at the rapidly deteriorating situation in Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad, detailing the large-scale Russian infiltration tactics that have compromised Ukrainian defenses and severed critical logistics routes. Farrell draws critical parallels to past battles like Bakhmut and Avdiivka, examining the patterns of delayed withdrawals and the challenges within Ukrainian military command. We explore the harrowing reality for the hundreds of civilians still trapped in Pokrovsk, discussing their complex reasons for staying and the ethical dilemmas presented by the presence of pro-Russian sympathizers. The conversation also tackles the strategic impact of Western military aid, such as potential Tomahawk missile deliveries, arguing that while powerful, these are not 'wonder weapons' that will instantly alter the war's fundamental dynamics. Instead, Farrell emphasizes the ongoing 'numbers game' and Ukraine's chronic manpower crisis. Finally, we delve into the looming threat of winter, particularly concerning energy infrastructure and heating, and touch upon the evolving situations in Kupyansk and other critical frontlines. Legalitatea acestor atacuri este pusă sub semnul întrebării chiar dacă Casa Albă demonstrează „o transparență îndrăzneață”, notează The New York Times.

Edition No253 ||| Day 1,339 ||| 14-10-2025 - This is your Silicon Bites Daily Geopolitics Brief, with a rundown of news stories on 14th October 2025. We cover Ukraine, Russia, China and the global struggle against autocracy. Russia's winter playbook returns — mass strikes on Ukraine's grid — while Ukraine pushes the war deep into Russia's energy heartland. Moscow's markets wobble, the World Bank trims growth, and Europe braces for hybrid hits on its energy lifelines. Let's go.1) Ukraine suffers another mass energy strike, blackouts in Kyiv.Russia hit Ukraine's energy system again at scale late Oct 9–10, plunging districts of Kyiv and multiple regions into darkness and disrupting water. Initial counts ran to hundreds of thousands without power before emergency crews restored much of the grid. The Kyiv Independent's on-the-ground brief captured the rhythm of the night — “missiles, one after another” — and the immediate aftermath across the city. (The Kyiv Independent)President Zelenskyy later said Moscow had waited for bad weather — cloud cover and wind — to weaken air defences. He also linked the timing to global distraction with Gaza and other stories. (The Kyiv Independent)Why it matters: The winter energy war is back. Expect recurring volleys designed to sap civilian morale, drain air-defence stocks, and force expensive repairs. What it won't do, is force Kyiv residents to abandon their city, or the struggle against Russian domination. ----------This is super important. 2025-10-02 | Silicon Wafers 017 | Today's episode focuses on a blistering new front of the war in Ukraine — energy warfare inside Russia — and what this means for Putin's war machine and his regime. We'll walk through four interlinked stories:1. Ukraine's strikes on Russian refineries and the fuel shock inside Russia2. Russia's pivot to Asian gasoline imports as its refining base crumbles3. Trump's green-light for U.S. intelligence sharing aimed at Russian energy targets4. What all this reveals about Putin's war, domestic repression, and regime brittleness. Ukraine's strikes on Russian refineries: fuel lines, export bans, price shockFor four years, Ukraine's military campaign has largely focused on military sites — barracks, command posts, supply lines. But in recent weeks, a new vector has burst into view: the decapitation of Russia's refining and fuel infrastructure.According to the Kyiv Independent, “Ukraine's sustained campaign of strikes on refineries is now causing havoc at gas stations in Russia and occupied Crimea, with prices skyrocketing and short-term shortages widely reported.” (Karol Luczka, Oct. 1, 2025) (The Kyiv Independent)----------Partner on this video: KYIV OF MINE Watch the trailer now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=arJUcE1rxY0'Kyiv of Mine' is a documentary series about Ukraine's beautiful capital, Kyiv. We talk about who's actually winning today, what is the trajectory of the war and how has that trajectory been evolving. We talk about a number of new tactics and tech that have appeared on the frontlines over the past months and how they have been fundamentally changing the fighting and what new tactics are both Ukrainians and Russians adopting right now. Edition No242 | 06-09-2025 - Europe gears up—again—for tougher sanctions on Russia but always seems to keep one foot on the brake at the same time as the accelerator. In Paris, the U.S. envoy, Witless Witkoff stormed in, then stormed out again, of a high stakes meeting with Zelenskyy and European leaders. And in Washington, the Trump White House talks tough, yet holds back on hitting Putin directly — every single time – while scolding Europe about Russian oil that still seeps in through economic cracks. Let's connect the dots, call out the pressures, and say the quiet part out loud: neither Europe, nor the U.S. have done anything that has real deterrence power. No wonder Putin is intent on continuing his war, with a sense of complete impunity. Europe's Sanctions Jitters, Paris Drama, and the Fine Art of Trump ManagementFirst the good news: Europe does understand the threat. After a Paris summit of the so-called “Coalition of the Willing,” European Council President António Costa confirmed that a team is flying to Washington to co-write a joint Russia sanctions package—explicitly including secondary sanctions in the draft. His words in Uzhhorod were unambiguous: “We are working with the U.S. and other partners to intensify our pressure through additional sanctions, both direct and secondary sanctions.” (Kyiv Independent, Sept. 5, 2025) Ukrainska Pravda reported the same: Brussels has already begun work on the next package and is sending a team to coordinate it with U.S. counterparts. Edition No231 | 24-08-2025 - Once more, we are asking the same question we asked of Biden and Sullivan? Is U.S. policy tying Ukraine's hands—not just inadvertently, but by design? Are we watching a strategic muddle, or calculated delay? Who's Blocking Ukraine's Offense Capabilities? Let's start with the curious case of long‑range missiles—approved for purchase but not for use, potentially sold but shackled. According to The Kyiv Independent, Washington has approved the sale of 3,550 ERAM missiles—Extended‑Range Attack Munitions, with a range of 241 to 450 kilometres—but wait for it… their use inside Russian territory requires U.S. approval. That approval is rumoured to be withheld. It feels like we're back in 2023-24. In other words, sold but not unleashed.” Profited from but not permitted to be used in the way they were designed. (The Kyiv Independent)Even more tellingly, a “review process” has quietly been imposed giving Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth authority to block Ukrainian long‑range strikes into Russia using U.S. weapons. The result: strikes potentially prevented for months. (The Kyiv Independent)Ynetnews adds: “The Pentagon has quietly barred Ukraine from using U.S.-made long-range ATACMS missiles to strike inside Russia for months,” and “on at least one instance, Ukraine requested permission … but was denied.” (ynetnews)----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------SOURCES: https://kyivindependent.com/us-approves-sale-of-eram-missiles-to-ukraine-wsj-reports/https://www.ynetnews.com/article/ryrrjfutxxhttps://kyivindependent.com/pentagon-has-quietly-barred-ukrainian-long-range-strikes-in-russia-with-us-missiles-wsj-reports/https://www.politico.com/news/2025/08/20/pentagon-minimal-security-guarantees-ukraine-00516856https://edition.cnn.com/2025/07/08/politics/hegseth-did-not-inform-white-house-ukraine-weapons-pausehttps://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jul/05/hegseth-weapons-shipments-ukraine ----------TRUCK FUNDRAISER - GET A SILICON CURTAIN NAFO PATCH:Together with our friends at LIFT99 Kyiv Hub (the NAFO 69th Sniffing Brigade), we are teaming up to provide 2nd Battalion of 5th SAB with a pickup truck that they need for their missions. This time, he was accompanied by a group of European leaders, including French president Emmanuel Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.Land swaps and security guarantees were all discussed — but are we any closer to actually seeing an end to the war in Ukraine? Edition No218 | 07-08-2025 - Ukraine is striking at the core of Russia's war machine—not on the front lines, but behind them—through surgical attacks on key logistics hubs.On the night of 5–6 August 2025, Ukrainian drones struck the Tatsinskaya railway junction in Russia's Rostov region. The hub serves as a frontline artery for transport of troops, ammunition, fuel and equipment into the occupied Donetsk and Luhansk regions.Reports confirm fires at the rail yard, damage to infrastructure, and disruption of rail services. These are not isolated incidents—they join a deliberate and escalating campaign targeting Russia's logistics deep inside its territory. (Militarnyi.com)According to multiple Ukrainian outlets: the drone strike “ignited fire at a key railway hub in the Rostov Oblast”, specifying damage to locomotive tracks and fuel tank railcars. Firefighters responded overnight, extinguishing major flames by dawn 6th August. (United24media.com)Russian evacuation reports around the time confirm passenger train services halted for hours, and overhead electrification systems were disrupted. Though civilian casualties were not reported, rail logistics in the region were significantly delayed. Edition No216 | 06-08-2025 - Belarus's New Martial Law Proposal. Today, we unpack Belarus's proposal to expand martial law and what it might mean—not just for Belarus, but for Ukraine, its NATO neighbours, and Europe's beleaguered democracies. In August 2025, Belarus's Defence Ministry submitted a new bill giving it the power to declare martial law not only in the case of aggression against Belarus, but also if Russia or the “Union State”—their supranational alliance—is attacked (The New Voice of Ukraine). As one summary put it, "if, for example, a Ukrainian drone strikes Russian territory, Belarus could legally impose martial law on its own soil".The official justification: Belarus cites threats to the Russian‑Belarusian Union State, an integrated bloc formed in the 1990s to align foreign, economic, and defence policies between Russia and Belarus (UNITED24 Media). Now it's a matter of debate whether Belarus can be considered a sovereign and independent country, given that its policy making is so closely aligned with Kremlin ambitions and intentions. ----------SUPPORT THE CHANNEL:https://www.buymeacoffee.com/siliconcurtainhttps://www.patreon.com/siliconcurtain----------SOURCES: * Militarnyi.com, “Belarus Proposes Introducing Martial Law…” (Aug 2025) * NV.ua / RBC.ua, “Belarus may declare martial law…” (Aug 2025) * Belsat.eu, on expanding grounds for martial law * Wikipedia Union State, treaty ratification details March 2025 (Wikipedia)* EUNEWS.eu, EU suspects Belarus behind migrant flows from Libya (Aug 2025)* Maghrebi.org, investigation linking Belarus in Libya migration (Aug 2025)* Wikipedia and other sources on weaponised migration (Wikipedia)* EU records: Frontex stats 2024 rising Belarus route by 192% (Reuters)* Reuters & Politico / Newsweek on Lithuanian drone incidents (Aug 5 2025) * Kyiv Independent on drone carrying explosives* CEPA analysis of Baltic hybrid drone threat ----------TRUSTED CHARITIES ON THE GROUND:Save Ukrainehttps://www.saveukraineua.org/Superhumans - Hospital for war traumashttps://superhumans.com/en/UNBROKEN - Treatment.
