This time of year I get a lot of financial questions from teachers. We've just gotten through the holiday spending spree, new year's might have inspired some financial goal-setting, and then there's the looming tax deadline in April, so there's a lot to think about. Sometimes the questions I get are really specific to an individual, but lately a bunch of clients and listeners have said “hey, you talk about reviewing financials on a regular basis as a way of getting more familiar with my financial picture, but what exactly should I be reviewing?” And they're totally right, I haven't been very specific here. So today I'm going to do that. I'm going to show you how to find some key numbers on your tax return that can give you powerful insights into your business and personal finances. It took decades for death row inmate Richard Glossip to convince Oklahomans and, later, the U.S. Supreme Court that he deserved a new trial. Glossip is just one of many inmates who say they faced convictions for crimes they did not commit. Read about enough of these cases, and you'll be asking, “Is innocence enough?”For the wrongfully convicted, tearful reunions and proclamations of justice from the courthouse steps only come after an arduous exoneration process paved with years of litigation. The average person wrongfully convicted loses a decade of their life behind bars, learning the legal system and advocating for their innocence. As the number of exonerations rise annually, there is still no way to track how many people have suffered unjust convictions. In the third episode of our fifth season, we journey through the highs and lows of post-conviction purgatory for people claiming innocence, from one Oklahoma man's hand-written petitions to a New York man who waited nearly two decades for evidence to emerge for a lawyer to take his case.Special guests:Andrea Miller, legal director of the Oklahoma Innocence ProjectMaurice Possley, researcher at the National Registry of ExonerationsJustin Brooks, co-founder of the California Innocence ProjectLaneshia Jordan, Texas attorneyJeffrey Deskovic, exoneree and attorneyMichael Grant, exoneree and assistant director of The Liberation FoundationRetired U.S. Magistrate Judge Kristen MixCarl Wyatt, Oklahoma inmate asserting innocenceThis episode was produced by Kirk McDaniel.

Voices from the Middle East; Bringing out the Voters; Band of Sisters; Swap Your Vote   We begin GREEP #196 in the Middle East with DENNIS BERNSTEIN and ANITA BARROWS.   RUTH STRAUSS warns of burning drop boxes and has some advice for the Harris campaign.   Getting Out the Vote is the expertise of the great ANDREA MILLER whose non-partisan Center for Common Ground website shows us how to direct voters to the polls.   From Florida we get the latest update on rampaging fascism from JIM NATHAN.   Atlanta-based RAY MCCLENDON guides us to Communities United for Justice, which supports canvassers in the field.   MARGOT KING & JOHN STEINER update us on the Band of Sisters, which supports women' reproductive rights.   Swap the Vote is explained by MIKE HERSH as a way to use the Electoral College to balance support for 3d parties in “safe states” versus major candidates in swing states.   Andrea Miller reminds us that leaving messages increases turnout by 5%, and that it's key to let citizens know that early voting can be decisive.     We must, says Andrea, let voters know they are invited to the dance, & the dance is democracy.   We adjourn early to make phone calls to potential voters…and we hope you will too….

4 PILLARS OF AMERICAN FASCISM; THE TRAGEDY OF HOMELESSNESS     We begin GREEP zoom #183 with HEDY TRIPP and her announcement of the public showing of the new documentary film “Detroit's Olympic Uprising.”    The great ANDREA MILLER from the Center for Common Ground then takes us through a devastating exposition of the US Supreme Court's decision to restore an absolute monarchy to the North American continent.   Her “Protecting Democracy from the Court” lays out in terrifying detail the Supremes' attack on democracy.  Their decisions range from dismissing charges against January 6 insurrectionists to establishing the divine right of a sitting president—-and maybe even an ex-president—-to break any laws they want.   MYLA RESON asks about the Biden Plan for reorganizing the Supreme Court.     ERIC LAZARUS proposes a civil assembly to substitute for the Court as is done in Ireland.   GREGG GORDON says “we're the King” and points out that the Court's decision now applies to President Biden, giving him absolute power….for the time being.   LYNN FEINERMAN tells us of GREG PALAST'S cinematic warning, in the movie “Vigilantes”,  against vote challenging, which allows a single individual to disqualify thousands of registered voters without due process.     Georgia's RAY MCCLENDON confirms our worst nightmare about mass disqualifications in the Peach State among others.  An Executive Order from the President would have no impact against this because of state's rights.  Ray urges us to focus on local election boards to counter this assault on democracy.   WENDI LEDERMAN, MIKE HERSH, PAUL NEWMAN, STEVE KAISER and DENNIS BERNSTEIN chime in on various aspects of this deep attack on our democracy.   We then welcome the legendary DONALD WHITEHEAD of the National Coalition for the Homeless.  Dr. Whitehead takes us deep into the horrifying plague of homelessness that now so deeply taints the American soul.   LORI GRACE then begins digging into the Project 2025 documents and provisos that might include a treason trial for Liz Cheney complete with execution of, at least, the death penalty.  In the eyes of Christian Nationalists, she said, “God has ordained Trump.”   TATANKA BRICCA brings us consideration of the Housing First organization that is successful 90% of the time for people who are unhoused.   SANDY BOLZENIUS tells us of Move to Amend which works against the Citizens United decision that has opened the floodgates for corporations to take over our government and extinguish our democracy.   DR. NANCY NIPARKO reminds us tat a major part of the homeless crisis has to do with overpricing on rents, bad zoning regulations and more.   Tatanka reminds us of the horrendous crisis we face with LEONARD PELTIER, who faces a de facto death penalty unless he is soon freed.   STEVE CARUSO has engineered another phenomenal gathering.  We'll see you next week!!!

RON LEONARD mocks the Democratic Party's top-down addiction, and the fatal trap of “couping.” Andrea points out that Florida's referendum allowing ex-felons to vote is still being kneecapped by requirements to pay “fines and fees” even if they aren't spelled out. RACHEL DEWOSKIN explains the rise of her “Writers for Democratic Action” and the use of the play “It Can't Happen Here (Again)” as a powerful organizing tool. Legendary writer/filmmaker ROGER RAPOPORT of Muskegon, Michigan describes his award-winning podcast series on voter turnout, and the desperate need to get people to vote. Nuclear expert/activist KEVIN KAMPS joins Roger to explain the insane dynamics of the multi-billion-dollar attempt to re-open the failed, decrepit 50-year-old Palisades nuclear reactor, sited on Michigan's west coast. RUTH STRAUSS clarifies the fine points activism among former NRC Chairs. Safe energy activists MYLA RESON and KARL GROSSMAN dissect the absurd attempt to prevent jalopy reactors like Palisades and Diablo from finding their way to the nuclear scrapheap. WENDI LEDERMAN wraps this week's Eastern Monday session by introducing writer/organizer JAY PONTI to discuss the challenges and rewards of grassroots campaigning and his new book “Be the Revolution.” Happy Easter!!!   See you next week...

“Dancing just created a space for me where I could do what I want and feel what.”Our conversation with Devika explores the profound influence dance has had in her life. From dancing to connect to herself, to dancing to lead others and create intimate spaces of trust. From dancing to shape and express parts of her identity to dancing to heal and fulfil––she takes us through the entire experience. The episode begins by delving deeper into the start of her journey with dance. She shares with us what initially drew her to the Horton technique and outlines her journey to now becoming a certified Horton instructor and teaching classes at The Ailey School, The Ailey Extension and at the Dance Theater of Harlem and WRArts. She then describes the feeling of connection, openness and accomplishment she's experienced throughout her life because of dance. A teacher who taught her what it means to lead. An NGO that taught her how to create intimate spaces of trust and moments of partnership. Her double major in data science which was easier to get through because of the rigorous focus she's had to put on her mind and body. She then very courageously shares the idea of freedom and release through dance and its impact on identity and expression of love. She shares her coming out to her family and sheds a light on how that journey has been. We end by touching upon the work she does in dance therapy and immersive theater and how she hopes to do more of both. And we part with the thought that just like you can't choreograph every movement in dance, you can't choreograph every moment in life and at times the beauty in both life and dance is about the unfold. Today's episode is more of a public service announcement for studio owners who have businesses that are registered in the US. On January 1, a new reporting requirement from the US Treasury Department went into effect and it might impact you. I'm talking about the Beneficial Ownership Information Reporting rule or BOI Reporting requirement from the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), part of the Corporate Transparency Act. Today I'm going to share what I learned in my research of the ruling. I'm going to go through this in a Q&A format that traces the path I took and the questions that came up for me as I determined whether or not I would be eligible and then what the registration process entailed. Hopefully it'll help you jumpstart your own research. A full transcript and resources from this episode can be found at MusicStudioStartup.com/episode139. VOTING RIGHTS & BRIBERY IN OHIO; HOW GOOGLE MANIPULATES PUBLIC OPINION; NUKE POWER ON THE ATTACK        We start with the great ANDREA MILLER and RAY MCCLENDON, who open GREEP #159 with their usual genius insights on voting rights, gerrymandering and more, primarily in the BIPOC south. STEVE CARUSO joins to fill us in on the corrupt insanity of Ohio.  Buckeye officials from the Governor, Lieutenant-Governor, Public Utilities Commission Chair and others are all implicated in the infamous $61 million bribe  for “persuading” the Legislature for a $1billion nuclear power bribe.  The former House Speaker, Larry Householder, has already begun a 20-year prison term. CAMILLA REES then introduces DR. ROBERT EPSTEIN and his pioneer work in tracking the undue influence of Google and other internet giants in swaying public opinion.  Dr. Epstein's riveting, groundbreaking presentation The presumption is that the influence is meant to be “pro-liberal,” but co-convener MIKE HERSH argues that the real agenda is pro-corporate, far to the right of the American mainstream.  Major media legend DAVID SALTMAN challenges the idea that such manipulation can tangibly shape voting behavior, ERIC LAZARUS, JUSTIN LEBLANC, MARY STONEWALL-BUTLER, JULIE WIENER, WENDI LEDERMAN and others chime in on the anti-democracy wave drowning our nation in outright autocracy. We're then joined by the legendary clean energy pioneer KARL GROSSMAN, who reports on the corporate call for the world to triple its insane commitments to atomic energy.  At the latest global climate conference, a convening sheik amazingly asserts that the burning of fossil fuels has no impact on global climate. STEVEN SONDHEIM, RON LEONARD and others chime in on the nuclear attack on our planet. NINA BEETY raises the possibility that a breeder reactor may have been built by PG&E at Moss Landing, California. MYLA RESON, newly elected member of the National Board of the Pacifica Radio Network, reminds us that the California Solartopia show she co-hosts with me (Harvey Wasserman) has returned to to KPFK 90.7fm in Los Angeles at 5pm PT Wednesday evenings.  That show can be heard at KPFK.org. The Takeaway
New FDA Rules on Medication Abortion Are Still Full of Red Tape

It's been more than six months since The Supreme Court's opinion in Dobbs overturned Roe v. Wade in June. Since then, anti-abortion activists have continued to try and restrict access to abortion care, even in states where abortion is legal. And The Food and Drug Administration and its oversight of the abortion medication, Mifepristone, has been one of their targets.  Medication abortions account for half of abortions in the United States, and Mifepristone is the first of two pills used in the method, for use in up to 10 weeks of pregnancy.Last week, the FDA issued new rules on Mifepristone, making it easier for people to access from retail pharmacies, with a prescription from a specially certified health provider. Previous to these new rules, patients could only receive the medication in-person at a specially-certified clinic, or through a telemedicine appointment and have the medication mailed to them through a certified mail-order pharmacy. This latest move by the FDA could expand access to abortion care, at least in states that don't already restrict abortions or the drugs for medical abortions. We speak with Andrea Miller, President of the National Institute for Reproductive Health who says this is a step forward, but there is still a lot of bureaucratic hoops that pharmacies have to jump through to provide the medication, and she says this is yet another case of “abortion exceptionalism.”
