Missionary kids often carry the weight of their parents' choices. They are inculcated into the faith without opportunity for independent thought, according to author, historian, and former intelligence analyst Holly Berkley Fletcher, PhD. Her parents were Evangelical Christian missionaries in Kenya, and she speaks about that and the experiences of other children with similar backgrounds through her book, The Missionary Kids: Unmasking the Myths of White Evangelicalism. “The mission field has long been the rugged frontier in a grand evangelical narrative, the ultimate proof of the American church's virtue, rightness, and importance,” she writes in the book's introduction.Holly's unique first-hand knowledge of missionary work has enabled her to explore the role of missionaries as “Super Christians” in the eyes of the church. Likewise, she has been able to write about the more devious aspects of mission culture, including physical or sexual abuse, neglect of children, and other crimes often not prosecuted due to jurisdictional gaps in the legal relationships between nations. Holly would eventually return to the United States, go on to teach at universities, and work for 19 years as an Africa analyst for the Central Intelligence Agency. Then she noted that the Trump / MAGA movement “would not exist without white evangelicals.” “That's really the foundational, most solid support base that he's had this entire time,” she concluded. She called White Evangelical Christianity a high-control religion with a persecution complex that has empowered a malignant narcissist. She said that's what inspired her to write the book. “I felt like the missionary kid experience was a great way to shine a light on it, because it's not a well-known facet to the broader public, but it is kind of the distillation of a lot of what white evangelical is.” While reading her book, I noticed that the religion reflected both a male-centric and colonialist perspective, as well as a problematic treatment of children. As I put it, “The kids get farmed off to boarding schools and to other places, while the parents do God's work.” Holly agreed, explaining that she specifically included the term “White” Evangelical Christianity because the racial dimension is deeply rooted in the culture. She acknowledged that while the movement has become global, with many White Evangelicals who are not white, “you see similar dynamics in other cultures replicating this both on the political front and on the religious front as well.” Learn more about your ad choices. Chuck Todd digs into the aftermath of the Virginia redistricting vote and finds plenty of blame to spread around — Democrats are gloating, Republicans are upset, and the whole episode confirms that partisan redistricting has become a race to the bottom with no one coming out clean. Henotes the "no" campaign in Virginia performed about as well as it realistically could, argues that not a single Republican had the guts to call out Texas's initial redistricting as wrong — meaning he has zero sympathy for the ones now complaining that Democrats responded in kind — and warns that gerrymandering is ultimately an insult to the founding fathers no matter who's doing it, even as he gives Democrats partial credit for at least putting the question to voters. He argues Trump's approval numbers portend a catastrophic midterm for the GOP, that Democrats' ceiling is around 40 House seats, and that incumbent Republicans will soon be desperate to distance themselves from Trump — though very few can credibly do so. On Iran, he says the Wall Street Journal editorial board unloaded on Trump, declaring that Tehran now thinks Trump is a sucker, and argues the president made everything worse by starting a war he doesn't have the guts to finish. He closes with a fascinating read on Tucker Carlson's public break with Trump, noting Trump has burned virtually every professional relationship he's ever had — but cautioning that it's genuinely hard to know what Carlson actually believes, that this could be a fake "heel turn," or that Tucker may be positioning himself for his own presidential run as the face of an anti-Trump MAGA movement. Then, veteran trial lawyers Mark Lanier and Rahul Ravipudi — the legal team that just won a landmark bellwether verdict against Meta and YouTube — join the Chuck Toddcast to explain how civil litigation is doing more to rein in big tech than the federal government has managed in a decade. They walk through how they persuaded a jury that these platforms engaged in negligent and punitive conduct toward children, systematically dismantling the "it's on the parents" defense by showing that parents simply aren't equipped to manage what amounts to engineered addiction — and that when that addiction takes hold in children, it causes irreparable harm by literally rewiring developing brains. They reveal that Meta's own internal research documents were devastating at trial, that former tech employees took the stand to call out the companies' safety practices, and that these platforms behaved exactly like Big Tobacco did — knowing the harm was real and burying the evidence. They break down how they proved addiction by design: endless scroll, autoplay, slot-machine psychology, and deliberately hidden safety features all created to maximize "time spent," a corporate metric fundamentally at odds with user wellbeing. The conversation gets into the nuts and bolts of the legal strategy and what comes next. Lanier and Ravipudi describe cross-examining Mark Zuckerberg, who they say couldn't handle basic questions about protecting kids, and explain why YouTube's defense — that it's a streaming service like Netflix rather than social media — collapsed once its own internal documents consistently referred to the platform as "social media." They explain that this is a bellwether case, meaning the judge used nine representative cases to establish facts and conditions that will now apply to roughly 3,000 other pending cases, with eight more trials coming and a settlement fund likely in the companies' future. The attorneys discuss whether tech companies are simply pricing these verdicts in as a cost of doing business (they argue settling would actually be a PR boon for the platforms), draw parallels and distinctions between big tech and tobacco, and offer concrete policy recommendations: a meaningful minimum age requirement, scrapping Section 230, nighttime curfews for minors, and removing the endless scroll. Their bottom line: tech companies won't do the right thing unless they're forced to, and the legal system is finally catching up to what regulators refused to address. After British police arrested the former Prince Andrew in connection with revelations involving Jeffrey Epstein, a reporter asked Donald Trump directly if anyone will face accountability in the United States. President Trump and the GOP are in a growing panic over ICE. Trump's advisers are sinking into recriminations. Republican officials are publicly admitting that his immigration agenda “seems to be not working” and that the GOP is “losing” the political battle over it. Others are suggesting that Alex Pretti's killing was “murder” and that it's time to “recalibrate.” Yet MAGA figures are pulling in the other direction. Timing and optics are very important.   Economy  Carney Cracks: Canada Has ‘No Intention’ Of Pursuing Free Trade Deal With China After Trump Threatens 100% Tariffs To review: right before Davos, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney returned from a trip to Beijing and announced a new 5-point ‘strategic partnership’ to ‘diversify our trade partnerships.’ The agreements included slashing tariffs on Chinese EV imports from 100 percent to 6.1 percent for the first 49,000 units, in exchange for China cutting tariffs on Canadian canola from 85 percent to 15 percent until at least the end of the year. Other exports, including Canadian canola meal, lobsters, crabs, and peas will also not be subject to Chinese anti-discrimination tariffs until at least the end of 2026. A week later, Carney told the global elite at Davos resort that the “rules-based order” established by the United States and its allies following WW2 was fraying amid the current rivalry between China and America, so the “middle powers must act together because if we’re not on the table, we’re on the menu.”  Carney said that for their survival, nations should no longer “go along to get along” with Trump.   Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says Canada has “no intention” of pursuing a free trade deal with China, after Donald Trump threatened to slap a 100% tariff on Canadian exports if Ottawa “makes a deal” with Beijing.   Source: zerohedge.com Trump Is Right About Europe's Weak Economy: U.S. vs. EU Compared  President Trump argued that Europe's economic stagnation is the result of a self-inflicted “civilizational erasure” driven by reliance on what he calls the “Green New Scam,” which he says has replaced affordable energy with costly and unreliable wind power. He further asserted that unchecked mass migration has strained social infrastructure and altered the continent's cultural identity, while a stifling regulatory environment and excessive government spending have suppressed the innovation needed to compete with the United States. Finally, he accused European nations of freeloading on American security, arguing that their failure to meet NATO defense spending targets over the past 70 years has allowed them to avoid the true costs of national sovereignty at the expense of the American taxpayer. Based on current economic data as of January 2026, the comparison supports Trump's critique. While the United States is experiencing aggressive growth alongside widespread deregulation, Europe remains mired in what can best be described as stabilized stagnation. The United States enters 2026 with inflation at 2.7%, steadily returning toward the 2% target. As in President Trump's first term, strong GDP growth has been paired with relatively modest inflation. Fourth-quarter GDP growth is projected at 5.4%, dwarfing Europe's stagnant 0.2%. For the full year, U.S. growth is expected to reach between 4.3% and 5%, while Europe is projected to manage only about 1.3% to 1.6%. On the labor front, the United States maintains its historical advantage, with unemployment at 4.4% compared to 6.3% in the Eurozone. After 2027, there's no “going back to normal.” The EU has indeed been importing refined petroleum products from India that originate from Russian crude oil, creating an indirect pathway for Russian oil to enter the European market despite sanctions on direct imports from Russia since December 2022.  This circumvention became prominent after the EU and G7 imposed a price cap on Russian oil, prompting Russia to redirect exports to countries like India and China, where the crude is refined and then resold.    EU officials and analysts have long acknowledged the loophole, which is why recent sanctions packages have targeted it directly. For instance, the EU’s 18th sanctions package in July 2025 banned the import of petroleum products derived from Russian crude processed in third countries, and specifically sanctioned Nayara Energy, an Indian refinery partly owned by Russia’s Rosneft.  The 19th package in October 2025 further tightened measures by sanctioning additional third-country entities, including three in India, for supporting Russia’s circumvention efforts. As a result, major Indian refiners like Reliance Industries have stopped importing Russian crude for certain facilities to comply with these rules and maintain access to EU markets. Russia, meanwhile, continues to adapt by using new middlemen exporters to supply India, aiming to sustain the flow despite the crackdown.  India has not fully stopped importing Russian oil since then, but imports have significantly declined.
