Donald Trump is arguably the most famous person - and most polarising political figure - on the planet. Few people know him more personally, or understand his upbringing better than his nephew, Fred Trump III. Fred was kind enough to chat with me about his bestselling book, All In The Family, an intimate look at the Trump clan, and his own evolution of opinions towards his uncle. While having a president in the family is not something most can relate to, the topics explored in the book are understood and experienced across the globe - from addiction to inheritance and family fallouts. In a way, so much of the family's dynamic can be understood while learning about William, Fred's youngest son - who is non-verbal and in need of around the clock care. As you'll hear throughout our conversation, Fred always grappled with the fact he didn't vote for his uncle in either election - and doesn't plan on doing so this year either - but he attended the inauguration, feeling it could provide a platform for his advocacy work for others like William. He has asked me to share two links for Irish organisations that advocate for intellectual disability rights in Ireland - where most of my listeners are. According to Social Justice Ireland, the 2022 census showed 13.5% of the population - more than 600,000 people - are living with a disability. The first link is for Inclusion Ireland, and the second is for Advocacy.ie. Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The Manager of Clare Crusaders claims guidelines are urgently needed in schools to ensure that special needs students that may display aggressive tendencies are dealt with appropriately. It follows a new Inclusion Ireland survey, which found that 35% of disabled children endured seclusion in education settings last year, while 27% suffered restraint. Among the issues reported by parents were their children being locked in rooms alone, sensory rooms being used inappropriately, and children being held against their will. Barefield Independent Councillor Ann Norton says the issue is widespread in this county and the Department of Education have failed to act.

I was lucky to be able to pin Miriam down for a chat because she is so incredibly busy advocating on behalf of her own and many autistic children.  Miriam has made huge progress with the support and partnership of her husband,  Involve Autism parents, peers and friends. The questions we all need the answers to, but might be afraid to ask.Understanding autism is difficult, this is mainly because it presents differently in every adult and every child who is autistic. Just like every human, diversity exists and individuality must be recognised and valued.  I learnt that here are however, many common traits which may help with the identification of autism.  Here we discuss them all and how they effect young or older children.  We also answer the basic question – What is autism? When or why do children have to have an assessment of need if autism is suspected? Can our children not access support without it? Where do I even start to find out about what supports are available for my child?  All of these questions and more are answered by Miriam. Most importantly, Miriam shares some of the really useful resources she has come across on her parenting journey.  These can be helpful to parents who have not yet received confirmation of autism or for those who are trying to support their autistic child.Resources about Autism AsIAm – AsIAm Is Ireland's National Autism Charity. Autism Mamaí Ireland – Facebook Group for Parents of Autistic Children. Middletown Centre for Autism – Support the promotion of excellence throughout Northern Ireland and Ireland in the education of children and young people with Autistic Spectrum Disorders National Autistic Society UK – A highly informative UK based resource.Involving Autism within our CommunitiesWe chat about the absolute importance of all children playing a valued role within our communities.  Miriam explains that this is the basis for her frustration, children are routinely sent by bus or taxi to another community to access an appropriate education.  What hope does an autistic child have of successfully belonging within their community if they are excluded from it from the age of diagnosis.  This is not an acceptable way to deliver the right to education and it is not an acceptable social standard to tolerate.   There are differences in communication means and in developmental norms, but there are no differences in the right to feel valued and safe within your community.  We can and simply must do better! Some Communities have gotten it right!Miriam highlights the amazing achievements of some communities to provide a supportive framework and platform for autistic children, adults, and their families. Cottage Autism Network Wexford   and Galway Autism Partnership are prime examples.  There are sporting clubs nationwide making an effort to provide an environment where autistic kids can feel secure and enjoy sport.  This allows them to benefit both their mental and physical wellbeing.  Miriam mentioned Ranelagh Rockets but a quick google search brough up lists on AsIAm and many more local clubs progressing towards a more inclusive environment.Challenging, Daunting and Support is KeyIf you cannot find a support network in your area, see if there are any facebook groups such as the ones above which may be able to guide you in the right direction!  Miriam and her team have made significant improvements, especially in the area of education, in her local area  There is of course the potential for parents to start advocating within their own locality.  It's not for everyone and it certainly doesn't sound easy.  Parents of autistic children should not need to fight so hard and I am sad for our society that the needs of these vulnerable families have not been met.  As Miriam says, reach out, find support and there really is always hope.  You, and your children, are valued and all children deserve to belong.  Thank you for listening to Parenting an Autistic Child in Ireland with Miriam Kenny.Support this PodcastSimply following and reviewing this podcast can make a huge difference!I really want to continue to support parents and appreciate every one of you who take the time from your day to learn something new along with me in these Real Lives episodes! You can check out all of my previous episodes by clicking right here!Sale!Covid-19 Antigen Lollipop Test€1.95 €5.95Read moreSale!Salin Plus Air Purifier (Salt Therapy) – Respiratory Health€117.45 €160.00Add to basketSale!Salin Plus Replacement Filters – Double Pack Sale€70.50 €90.00Add to basket Hosted on Acast. Rachael Ryan explores what life is like for the siblings of people with additional needs in Ireland today “When I get to spend a night in my sister’s home, we laugh and giggle like siblings do and her disability plays no part in that because it’s just one part of who she is, the same way I have my nuances and my challenges”. Broadcasting on Newstalk 106-108fm this weekend, new Irish radio documentary ‘Siblings’, produced by Rachael Ryan, tells the story of five sibling relationships around Ireland today – where one brother or sister just happens to have an intellectual disability. These sibling relationships; while no different to any other are at the same time unique in their own way- this documentary captures these stories of friendship, compassion and love. Being a sibling of a person with additional needs can be an emotional journey; but ultimately an incredibly rewarding experience which can shape an individual’s outlook on life, often for the better. Broadcaster Rachael Ryan, as the sister of a sibling with an intellectual disability, can vouch for that. In this documentary she talks to Irish people at all stages of life about having a sibling who has additional needs - experiencing childhood with their brother or sister, learning about their needs, sharing their struggles, celebrating their highs and ultimately deciding what role they will play in their future. Sinead Redmond shares her story of growing up with her sister Deirdre and how having a sibling with additional needs while growing up brought on “every emotion under the sun.” Graham Heritich, also known as the Cupcake Bloke, talks about his brother Patrick and how their close relationship has been made stronger since Patrick has started working at Graham’s bakery, “It’s normal - I have a job, you have a job, Patrick has a job.” Molly speaks about her sister Fran’s journey to independence and how both sisters mutually benefit from each other’s strengths. While a recent study by Dr Máire Leane from UCC has highlighted the lack of support for adult siblings of people with intellectual disabilities, there are several groups in Ireland aiming to bridge this gap. Rachael Ryan talks to representatives from Sibshop Ireland and Inclusion Ireland about the important role siblings play in the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. This documentary also explores how areas like employment and Ireland’s social scene need to be challenged to become more inclusive for people with intellectual disabilities in Ireland today. BROADCAST TIMES: Siblings will broadcast live on Newstalk 106-108fm on Sunday 14th April at 7am, with a repeat broadcast the following Saturday 20th April at 9pm PODCAST: Podcast will be available on www.newstalk.com/podcasts after the first broadcast CREDITS: Siblings was produced and presented by Rachael Ryan. Dr Barbara Maive Stokes was a pediatrician and pioneering disability campaigner. Born in London, Stokes studied medicine at Trinity College, Dublin, after which she trained as house physician at the Meath Hospital. She earned a certificate in public health from UCD in 1947 and hoped to become an epidemiologist, but the marriage bar prevented this as positions in that field were all within the public service. Turning to pediatrics, Stokes was appointed assistant physician at St. Ultan's Hospital; she also worked at the Royal City of Dublin Hospital, and in the 1950s was Senior Demonstrator in Pharmacy and Physiology at RCSI. Stokes' first involvement with the association that would become St. Michael's House, a community-based service for people with an intellectual disability, was as a part-time volunteer; later she managed the entire organisation. A tireless advocate, Stokes served on many boards, notably the National Rehabilitation Board and Inclusion Ireland.

A list of the Promises made in the 2011 Programme for Government relating to disability, are available to view HERE Everyone who supports the rights of people with disabilities should attend! This includes grandparents, cousins, neighbours, work colleagues, team mates etc etc. This is about demanding equal rights and if you believe in this, then we need your support!! Date: Wednesday, 21st November 2012 Time: Assemble at 2pm, leaving at 2.30pm Where: Central Bank, College Green, Dublin 2, with a march to Leinster House, Kildare St, Dublin 2 This march is for individuals with disabilities and their families. None of the organisations that are part of the Disability Rights Coalition will bring placards with their organisation names on it, and we ask others to respect this by also not bringing banners or placards highlighting issues associated with a service or organisation. Instead of placards with organisation names, we want people to highlight where they are from. Please bring placards with slogans like ‘Ballinasloe says Nothing About Us Without Us’, or ‘Cork says Rights Not Charity’. Please use red card or placards for these banners – we want to send a strong message that we are giving Government a red card. If everyone uses red, then this will be a great visual message. Also, no political party posters. This march is about promoting people’s individual rights. The Disability Rights Coalition are facilitating this protest by sending out information, but we want it to be about individuals with disabilities and their families coming together to support each other in demanding greater equality. The Programme for Government published in March 2011 contained many keys promises to people with disabilities, including “tackling Ireland’s economic crisis in a way that is fair, balanced, and which recognises the need for social solidarity”. But cuts affecting people with disabilities and their families continue to build up, and people are feeling increasingly isolated and abandoned by this Government. This march calls on Government to fully implement Disability Promises in the 2011 Programme for Government.
