Greetings Glocal Citizens! This week Hélène Himmer, a French national with roots in the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, now based in Portugal joins me in conversation about her current work at African Futures Lab (AfaLab) leading a project on climate reparations. I met Hélène last November at FORGE: Harnessing Creative Arts for Reparatory Justice, a convening of artists, media, cultural workers, civil society, and government leaders across Africa, Europe and the U.S. to further the movement for reparations. The event took place in Accra, Ghana and featured Glocal Citizens Esther Armah (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/esther-armah), Makmid Kamara (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/makmid-kamara), and Nyamal Tutdeal (https://glocalcitizens.fireside.fm/guests/nyamal-tutdeal) as facilitators. In addition to meeting so many dynamic diasporans I was introduced to organizations like AfaLab, an international non-profit organization supporting racial justice movements in Europe and Africa through conducting research and developing policy and legal strategies to empower civil society actors and public and private institutions in their fight for justice and reparations. Currently the Policy and Advocacy Officer at AfaLab, Hélène is a committed activist and professional with a diverse background in human rights law, corporate social responsibility and international development. Her activism began in her early teens with a youth organization focused on education, youth rights and inclusion. She then spent several years working for racial justice in France. Moving to the corporate sector, Hélène worked in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in start-ups and technology companies. However, her passion for social impact led her to international organizations where she specialized in advocacy, project management and partnerships. Her work has focused on climate justice, peacebuilding, anti-corruption, women's empowerment, youth cooperation and inclusive societies across Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa and the MENA region. Where to find Hélène? The COP29 Climate Summit in Baku concluded with a contentious deal aimed at addressing global climate challenges. Delegates agreed on a $300 billion annual funding target by 2035, tripling the previous commitment to support developing nations in mitigating climate impacts and transitioning to cleaner energy. However, this figure, part of the New Collective Quantified Goal, drew sharp criticism from leaders of vulnerable nations, calling it insufficient to tackle worsening climate crises. While some hailed the progress, others slammed the rushed approval process.  For more on this Elvis Presslin spoke to Lisa Makaula, Advocacy Officer at Green Connections

On 15 October 2023, Poland held parliamentary elections which signaled the end of the eight years in power of the right-wing conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party. In December, the PiS-led government was replaced by a liberal, opposition-led coalition. Media freedom, and in particular the situation at Poland's public service media, was one of the first issues tackled by the new government within days of taking office, as the cabinet led by Donald Tusk immediately sought to wrestle control of public media away from the outgoing PiS-led coalition. This included public television (TVP), Polish Radio as well as Poland's national news agency PAP. One of the first acts of the new government was to change the leadership of the public media by adopting a parliamentary resolution which declared the situation at public media as illegitimate and unconstitutional before calling on the authorities to take immediate action to restore the constitutional order and the “independence, objectivity and pluralism” of public media. In response, the minister of culture intervened  by replacing the members of the supervisory boards and senior management of the TVP, Polish Radio and PAP. In doing so the government by-passed the National Media Council (NMC) set up in 2016 by PiS to nominate senior PSM management and supervisors. This led to three weeks of protests led by PiS politicians and some TVP staff on the premises of Telewizia Polska and a political standoff between the government and Poland's President, Andrzej Duda, who tried to block the changes by rejecting the 2024 budget for the public media. Without funding the situation quickly became untenable and the then Minister of Culture,  Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, placed the public media into a state of liquidation, a legal status for entities without sufficient funds to operate, which enabled the ministry to continue to finance the PSM directly until new reforms can be agreed. Nearly one year later, the legal uncertainty persists with public service media staff forced to work in a form of legal limbo without the security of guaranteed financing nor a management that has been appointed through an independent and transparent process. Summary: In this podcast episode, host Karol Łuczka speaks with Kamila Ceran, the editor-in-chief of Radio TOK FM, and with Robert Kwiatkowski, a member of the National Media Council in Poland, about the current state of public media in Poland. Łuczka, Ceran and Kwiatkowski discuss the significant changes in media freedom following the recent government transition, the ongoing political influence on public media, and the challenges of achieving true media independence. Ceran shares her insights on the politicization of media, the implications of funding, and the lack of shining examples of independent public media globally. Kwiatkowski shares insights on the role of the National Media Council and the future vision for public media, emphasizing the need for legal clarity and independence from political influence. The conversation concludes with reflections on the future of media in Poland and the complexities surrounding public funding. Takeaways: There is an improvement in quality of reporting and objectivity. Public media in Poland has faced significant politicization. The future of public media depends on upcoming presidential elections. Media independence has been a challenge for decades in Poland. The financing of public media is crucial for stability. Legal reforms are necessary for media independence. The situation of public media in Poland has dramatically changed since the government transition. Funding for public media is often controlled by politicians, affecting independence. The media landscape in Poland is challenging, with limited options for unbiased reporting. Public media do not fulfill their intended role of unbiased information dissemination. There is no clear solution for ensuring media independence in Poland.   Guests: Kamila Ceran, editor-in-chief of TOK FM and Robert Kwiatkowski, member of Poland's National Media Council Producer and Host: Karol Łuczka, Eastern Europe Monitoring and Advocacy Officer at International Press Institute (IPI) Editor: Javier Luque, head of digital communications at IPI Other episodes in this series: MFRR Podcast: Navigating Hungary's new Sovereignty Protection Act Related links: More ambitious reform needed to secure media freedom in Poland MFRR In Focus: How will the takeover of Polska Press in Poland impact the upcoming election?

Financial instability due to mental health issues exacerbates food insecurity, leading to anxiety, depression, and stress. The inability to afford nutritious food impacts both physical and mental well-being, particularly in children, who face higher rates of mental health issues and school absenteeism. The Food Foundation calls for policies addressing the cost of healthy food, benefit levels, and extending nutritional support programs to alleviate these intertwined crises. Shownotes:Not many people in the western world have heard of Hansen's disease or Leprosy – for most who are familiar with it arouses fear and aversion. It is a tropical disease that occurs in more than 120 countries, has been referenced in the bible and Victoria Hislop wrote The Island inspired by a visit to Spinalonga, the abandoned Greek leprosy colony, which sold over a million copies. My earliest interaction with the disease was on the Main Street of the city I grew up in. Along the street, one aften came across a small group of people begging for alms, those badly affected being pulled on makeshift carts by the more able bodied. The easiest thing to do was to ignore them or pretend one could not see them or their plight. That was my first experience of shame. Shame at the lack of knowledge, confidence or ability to engage with respect with people disfigured and ostracised by disease. However, this is not about me but about people who are disenfranchised, excluded from accessing healthcare, education, economic opportunities and social support because of fear and misinformation.A couples of months back, I happened to be seated on the same take table at India Week as Sian Arulanantham, head of programmes and research of Leprosy Mission UK. We got chatting about the incredible work they are doing across the world and in India and I invited them to be a guest on my podcast to speak about the important work being done to eradicate an ancient disease that stigmatises and makes outcasts of over two hundred thousand people every year.In this episode of The Elephant in the Room podcast, Daisy Mansfield Policy and Advocacy Adviser at Leprosy Mission talks about the work being done in India and across the world. We spoke about a) how they deliver on their goals in this highly complex geography b) behaviour change campaigns for education and removing social stigma c) Strategies to empower individuals and families d) Roles models with lived experience of disability and stigma e) WHO 2035 goal for eradication of the disease and challenges to getting to the targetThe most important thing to remember is that if detected early, the disease is curable with multi drug therapy (MDT) and the good news is that the WHO has made MDT available free to all leprosy patients around the world (with the help of big pharma).Head to the podcast to listen and see how you can support the cause

The Mashco Piro number little over 750 people, but their habitat and lives are increasingly under threat from the encroaching loggers around them. In Perspective, we spoke to Teresa Mayo, Researcher and Advocacy Officer at the human rights organisation Survival International.

In this episode, host Diana Buttu speaks with Palestinian human rights lawyer Ahmed Abofoul about South Africa's case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), charging Israel with the crime of genocide in Gaza. Mr. Abofoul is a Legal Researcher and Advocacy Officer with Al-Haq, one of the oldest Palestinian human rights organizations. On January 26th, the ICJ ruled that Israel is plausibly committing the crime of genocide in Gaza and must take all measures to prevent acts of genocide. Since the ruling, Israel has repeatedly violated the ICJ-mandated measures, including blocking the entry of life-saving food, aid, and water into Gaza. Numerous humanitarian groups have raised alarm about Israel using starvation as a weapon in Gaza, stating that famine in Gaza is imminent due to Israel's illegal blockade. Additionally, since the ICJ ruling, Israel has killed more than 3,500 Palestinians in Gaza, bringing the number of Palestinians Israel has killed in Gaza to more than 31,000. This includes Israel killing more than 13,000 children in Gaza since October. Mr. Abofoul, who is based in the Hague, discusses the significance of the ICJ's case and why it is a critical step towards ending ongoing impunity for Israel's horrific war crimes against the Palestinian people. In the episode, Mr. Abofoul and Ms. Buttu provide an in-depth discussion about Israel's inherent and long history of ethnic cleansing and genocidal intent in Palestine, within the context of the ICJ. Mr. Abofoul also discusses the long history of U.S. and Western hypocrisy in applying international law and how the Israel-genocide ICJ case is a testament to the international legal system. We are excited to welcome Amaya Valcárcel, International Advocacy Officer with Jesuit Refugee Services (JRS) in Rome, who also works in the area of research and reflection in the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development at the Vatican. Amaya helps to broaden our perspective beyond the US-Mexico border to recognize the harsh reality of forced migration around the world. She echoes the words of Pope Francis calling for a culture of encounter as a remedy to the globalization of indifference that causes societies to build more policies of resistance rather than welcoming for refugees and asylum seekers.  This past Sunday, we celebrated Laetare Sunday (from the Latin for “rejoicing”) in the middle of our Lenten journey. Drawing from that theme, Brian and Joe share stories of joy that breaks through even the harshest of circumstances. Brian tells the story of Kayla, a 4-year-old girl who he baptized in Senda 2 in Reynosa. Despite the harsh conditions of the shelter and the desperation of a long wait to enter the US, Kayla's parents took advantage of their time at the shelter to have their daughter baptized, which was a moment of joy for all who joined in the celebration. Joe recalls the birthday/farewell party for Carlos, a migrant who was staying at Casa del Migrante in Reynosa. The joy reached a new level when Sor Edith, an 80-year-old Daughter of Charity, broke into dance to the delight of all. If you want to see her cut a move, there's got to be a Tik Tok video of her out there somewhere!

Join a panel of Yemeni scholars and activists for a bottom-up perspective on the conflict in Yemen. ***Please note: This discussion was recorded on May 17, 2022 and while the situation on the ground has changed, we hope the background provided here remains informative.*** The recent ceasefire in Yemen and upcoming peace talks promise a possible end to a nightmarish six-year-long conflict that has generated one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world. International commentary tends to frame the conflict as a proxy war between regional powers and remains narrowly focused on dynamics between the Saudi-led coalition and the Houthis. Missing from this picture are the projects and priorities of Yemeni activists, social movements, and grassroots organizations. We rarely hear the voices of Yemeni women, youth, or ordinary people. Yet these forces will be essential to the post-war peace-building process. Yemeni civilians are doing more than simply surviving against punishing odds. A durable settlement to the conflict will be impossible without them. How might both the war in Yemen and the prospects for peace look different with these voices at the center? By featuring Yemenis who work directly in and with these movements, this panel will provide an important bottom-up perspective that can supplement and challenge prevailing accounts of the conflict. Speakers: Azal Alsalafi is a Research Fellow at the Yemen Policy Center in Berlin and Protection and Advocacy Officer at the Peace Track Initiative, which was founded by Yemeni women inside and outside Yemen who came together in 2015 to support the peace process in Yemen. Her research and work focus on pathways of protection, feminist foreign policies, socio-economic dynamics and their impact on human rights and peace-building. Yazeed al-Jeddawy is a fellow at the Yemen Peace Forum and an independent research consultant. He has co-authored papers and policy briefs on youth, arts, transitional justice, development and peace-building in Yemen. He previously worked as a coordinator of youth-focused projects/programs at Youth Without Borders Organisation for Development (YWBOD), and as Education Program Manager at Nahda Makers Organization. She is the author of Yemen in the Shadow of Transition: Pursuing Justice Amid War, which will be published in September 2022, and Islamists and the State: Legitimacy and Institutions in Yemen and Lebanon (2013). She co-edited The Fight for Yemen, a special issue of Middle East Report, the magazine of the Middle East Research and Information Project (MERIP).
