Come one, come all, to Episode 203 of "The Most LAFC Podcast on Earth," Defenders of the Banc! On most nights, our first match in Nashville, and certainly our first meeting against Walker Zimmerman since we traded him to Nashville in 2020, would take center stage. But this was not most nights, LAFC faithful. Ever since the signings of Gareth Bale and Giorgio Chiellini, LAFC supporters wondered when and where they would their debut, and all signs pointed to Nashville. Sure enough, announced in the 18 was the Welsh superstar, Bale, and starting next to Jesus David Murillo on the back line was Chiellini. Tonight would be another in what has been a long line of “pinch me moments” this season for the Black and Gold. LAFC struck first, off the foot of, who else, Chicho Arango. The play began with a long pass from Chiellini to Vela, who back-heeled it to Hollingshead. Ryan's pass crosses the goal box to Chicho, who slots it home from a tough angle to give LAFC the 1-0 lead. All was fine until a silly foul by Ilie in the box on C.J. Sapong. After VAR confirmed the foul, the dangerous Hany Mukhtar stepped up to the spot and buried it, knotting the match at 1 heading into halftime. The second stanza has belonged to LAFC all season, and this match would be no different. Just a minute into the half, Carlos Vela drops an absolute DIME to Hollingshead, whose extraordinary effort literally puts the ball on frame. It caroms off the post to Cifu, and Jose hammers it home for his 6th of the year to give LAFC the lead for good, 2-1. Among the other highlights of the second half: Chiellini comes off at the hour mark for Eddie Segura, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi makes his return to the pitch for Mahala in the 84th, and OMG Gareth Bale makes his LAFC debut! In the 72nd minute, Chicho gives way to Bale, and all of GEODIS Park, not just the LAFC supporters, rose in applause and admiration. Gareth Bale is officially Black and Gold! The boys are definitely up to their usual knuckleheadedness on 203: We do a deep dive on the Butt family and H-E-B (not in Family Guy), explore Adrian Fein's time at Hamburger (also not in Family Guy), chat about Peterhead in Scotland (still not in Family Guy), and recount the inspiration for “Filly and the Scarf” (which IS in Family Guy!). Wow. We highlight the All Stars and TOTW-ers, the Las Vegas Lights, Angel City, and even Red Card Roger! We loved making 203, and we hope you'll join us soon for Episode 204!

It's Episode 185, and Filly and the Scarf find themselves in beautiful downtown San Diego. LAFC travels to Orlando in search of three points, with many players coming back from their international duty. LAFC's depth and resolve would be tested, and, despite Joao Moutinho's best efforts, the Black and Gold would come away with three points in the House of the Mouse! Things did not start well for LAFC, as Orlando dominated the first 20+ minutes of the match. However, that star-studded front line would come together for the first time, as Vela played a perfect ball over the top for Chicho, who found a streaking Rayito for his first goal of the season. The rest of the first half would be a back-and-forth affair. Pato and Murillo would trade goals, and right before the half, LAFC's old friend Joao would tally the equalizer to send us into the half 2-2.  The second half was a different story, however, as LAFC came to play. Cherundolo inserts Cifu into the match at the half and just 6 minutes later, a rocket by Ilie Sanchez puts LAFC on top 3-2. It very well might be the Goal of the Week! LAFC shows off its depth, bringing on Mahala, Kellyn Acosta, and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi to get significant run in the second half, and right before stoppage, the Moose was let loose in Orlando. In stoppage time, the player Scarf calls the most exciting player to watch in Black and Gold, Mahala, finds the back of the net after some chaos in front of goal. LAFC comes home with all three points after four goals on the road in Orlando.  How many songs does Filly sing on this episode? Who at LAFC can get Scarf that sweet, sweet red keeper kit Maxime Crepeau wore for the match? And what phrase from 2019 looks like it'll be sticking around on the pod for a while? You'll have to listen to Episode 185 to find out! Enjoy!

Steve Cherundolo's team returned from Miami with all three points in tow thanks to a 2-0 victory. Kwadwo Opoku and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi scored their first MLS goals with the Black & Gold to seal the victory, while Maxime Crepeau picked up his second clean sheet of the season. Despite passing an important road test, much of the talk was about the weather in Miami. Sunny and humid to swirling winds, all culminating in what looked like a monsoon by the end of the match - the most vivid picture of the day might have been the 3252 cheering in the Miami rain while everyone else ran for shelter. So, with that in mind, Vince La Rosa chatted with the LAFC head coach about playing in crazy weather and put Steve's weather knowledge to the test with a round of fact or fiction: weather.

It's the third match of 2022 for LAFC, and our first away from the friendly confines of the Banc. LAFC travels near the city where the heat is on, down to Fort Lauderdale to take on Inter Miami CF. Welcome to Episode 183, where Filly and Scarf break down all the fun, and the weather, of our second win of the year. It was an ominous start on a few fronts for LAFC. The weather, and more specifically, the wind, was a major factor from the very start. The wind affected free kicks, long passes, and even a shot or two for the Black and Gold. Couple that with the fact that LAFC also picked up two early yellows, one on Ilie and the second on Moon, and it certainly wasn't the start Steve Cherundolo had hoped for. Just when we thought we would have to be content with a 0-0 first half, Brek Shea begins to do Brek Shea things. First, a pass from Carlos Vela deflected by Brek finds a streaking Mahala in the box, and Mahala doesn't miss from there! LAFC goes up 1-0 off a rocket from Opoku. But Brek wasn't done yet! After getting broken off inside by Rayito, Brek grabs and spins Brian for a straight red, and Miami would play the second half a man down. Over the course of the second half, LAFC brought in some key reinforcements: Chicho, Latif, Tajouri-Shradi, and Pancho all enter the match in the second half, highlighting the depth of this club in 2022. It would be Ismael Tajouri-Shradi with the moment of brilliance for LAFC, scoring on an untouched free-kick from the right of keeper Clement Diop across the goal and in! LAFC would salt away the victory, take all three points, and, for the moment, move to the top of the table in the West, and the top of the Supporters Shield race.* (*plenty of clubs still to play on the night…) What did Filly think of the lead commentator? What about Scarf's take on the MLS media deal? And what the heck is League1 Ontario? Tune in to Episode 183 to find out!

Season 5 is almost upon us, and we here at Defenders Nation, preachers of the Black and Gold gospel, absolutely cannot wait! With our new vestments freshly unpacked, the "5 Years Strong" kit, we are indeed feeling stronger than ever. But while the kit may be new, and the coach may be new, and many of the players may be new, the goal remains the same: win the whole damn thing!  Here on Episode 180, it's a solo Scarf endeavor, as Filly takes a short break from the pod to continue to kill it over in MASL-land. Not to worry, however, as Scarf takes you through all the happenings in pre-season.   Out in Windio, LAFC gains their wings with a 6-1 drubbing of the Red Bulls after a no-show against DC, and the performance by Rayito has Scarf right back on the bandwagon. LAFC wasn't done "tweaking" the roster, or the front office! Marco Antonio Garces comes over from Pachuca in what feels like a huge move for the FO. Ryan Hollingshead and Doneil Henry give the Defenders of the Banc two new defenders to support, and we welcome the Mayor's staff to the sidelines, including one coach who stayed, one who returned, and one who will coach our keepers.   We spotlight players of the past, including updates on Eduard Atuesta and Diego Rossi, players of the present, as Eddie Segura and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi recover from injury, and players of the future, as Nathan Ordaz and Marvin Gamez headline the next budding young crop of talent. Wait until you hear about all the LAFC Academy talent and girls from LAFC SoCal Youth called into US national youth camps!   What happened during the Academy's Open Cup qualifying run? What's the South Korean connection between Kim Moon-Hwan and Canadian Doneil Henry? Is it Furman College or Furman University? To get the answers to these, and all your other Black and Gold queries, please enjoy Episode 180 of Defenders of the Banc! Is it Opening Day yet?!

LAFC 2.0 is on and poppin', and for the first time in our club's history, the Black and Gold took the pitch without Bob Bradley. The Steve Cherundolo Era begins in earnest, and it's against a familiar preseason foe, the New England Revolution.Forgoing much of the usual News and Notes of most Defenders episodes (to be covered in Episode 180!), Filly and the Scarf get right in to all the action in our first preseason match of Season 5! (Right after a little This Date In LAFC History, of course…)Many of the new faces would have to wait to make their LAFC debuts. Maxime Crepeau and Kellyn Acosta were both in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada waiting to face each ther in a World Cup Quaifier, while Ilie Sanchez and Ismael Tajouri-Shradi were unavailable as well. LAFC mainstay Eddie Segura is still working himself back to 100%, while Latif Blessing, Chiqui Palacios, and Jose Cifuentes all were held back as well. However, some of the “new new” was at the Banc, including Franco Escobar, our new #2 on the back line. Also starting was future backup keeper John McCarthy. It was a back and forth first half, with most of the excitement centered around a rather silly red card earned by Jesus Murillo in the 25'. Scoreless until just before the half time whistle, Adam Buksa put a rebound past McCarthy, and LAFC entered the half down 1-0. And, oh by the way, you can replace a player who gets a red, as long as it's preseason! The second half saw a ton of changes for LAFC. Trialists, fringe roster players, and Mamadou Fall all took the pitch in the second half. Tomas Romero took over in goal, Cal Jennings, Mahala, Danny Musovski, and Danny Trejo all played up top, but it was late super-sub Bruce El-Mesmari who created the big chance for LAFC. Taken down in the box in the 85', the PK was converted by Fall, and the match ended 1-1. All in all, it was an entertaining start to the new era at LAFC. 25 different players took the pitch, our new coach coached, and we loved every minute of it. And we are looking forward to covering EVERY single minute of it here on Defenders of the Banc! Join us for Season 5!

For the final time in 2021, the boys are at World Famous Filimonster Studios to record an episode of “The Most LAFC Podcast on Earth”, Defenders of the Banc! There is SO much news to discuss since our pasting at the hands of the Commerce City Rapids, and Filly and Scarf try to get to ALL of it! This offseason saw, without a doubt, the most significant player movement of any of our first four seasons. El Profe, Eduard Atuesta, is gone, and not to a club that many could have predicted. Eduard gets to try to make it a Copa Libertadores three-peat for Brazil's Palmeiras. Also gone is the only coach we have ever known, Bob Bradley, as he heads north of the border to drink Labatt's and coach his son, Michael, at Toronto. He's been given the keys to the kingdom, eh, as he was named both head gaffer and Sporting Director at TFC. Also gone is an unsung hero who truly has been there from the beginning, Defender of the Banc Tristan Blackmon. Picked with our second ever SuperDraft pick in 2018, Tristan leaves behind a legacy of grit, toughness, and a fun social media follow. Who will play keeper? With Jamal Blackman being given his walking papers and Pablo Sisniega traded to the new Al Raitt FC, Charlotte, Tomas Romero is the only keeper under contract as of the recording of Episode 178. Also gone, as of now, are Raheem Edwards, Jordan Harvey, Daniel Crisostomo, Alvaro Quezada, and Michee Ngalina. LAFC has also begun to re-tool, or “tweak”, as JT put it, by bringing in two players with bona fide MLS Cup experience. The newest Defender of the Banc, Franco Escobar, comes to us by way of Atlanta United, where he scored the second goal in their 2-0 MLS Cup win over Portland in 2018. The Argentinian looks to help the Black and Gold on the wings. Fresh off winning MLS Cup with NYCFC in 2021, then being drafted by Charlotte in the Expansion Draft, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi lands with LAFC by way of a trade with MLS's newest club. In the mold of a Danny Musovski-type, or, dare we say, Adama Diomande, Israel knows how to put the ball in the back of the net and provides much-needed depth when Chicho, Rayito, or Vela are off the pitch.      And don't forget, Defenders… we also get a full season of Chicho Arango, a healthy Eddie Segura, and (at least) a full half-season of a healthy Carlos Vela. (We explain, don't worry.) All we need now is a head coach. And a starting center midfielder. And a starting keeper. And a little more depth. Also on this episode, we celebrate Chicho Arango taking home the Newcomer of the Year Award for 2021, the U19's as they advance in Open Cup Qualifying, and Lee Nguyen's NWSL trophy! We get a new toy in Filimonster Studios, we circle some key dates on the calendar that we are looking forward to, and Scarf doesn't have Covid (according to two tests) even though he feels and sounds like death. Which inaugural team player signed to coach with Sister Jean over at Loyola-Chicago? How is Diego Rossi doing in Turkey or Christian Ramirez in Scotland? And why does Filly now have a vested interest in our eMLS player? You'll have to listen to find out! Finally, stick around for the end, please. We know it's long, but Filly and Scarf both chat about their New Year's Resolutions, or as Filly says, goals for 2022. This may be it for 2021, but we can't wait to experience what's in store for 2022! Defenders Nation, thank you, and we love you! Here's to all the best in 2022 to the millions… and millions!

In what was billed as the “Marquee Matchup in MLS” this week, East meets West at the Banc, with NYCFC taking on LAFC at the Cathedral of the Black and Gold. Here on Episode 148, Filly and Scarf recap the frustrating 2-1, complete with a breakdown of the breakdowns, thoughts on what could be next, and more than a few hot takes.  Before they get into the match recap, the Defenders recount a fun weekend in Solvang spent celebrating Nina’s birthday. Wineries, confetti balloons, and a few aebelskivers made for a very fun weekend, which even included running into a very good friend of the pod. They run through a few LAFC-related news and notes, including successful surgery for Mahala and potential international matches for a few of our boys in Black and Gold, and a few moments in LAFC history involving Carlos Vela off the pitch. And of course, no recent pod would be complete without an update on Brian Rodriguez and Almeria. Next week is a huge week for Almeria! The elephant in the room, however, is our loss, at home, against NYCFC. The two clubs had battled to consecutive 2-2 draws in their previous meetings, but only New York would get to two goals in this match. A somewhat humdrum first half ended scoreless, but that proved to be the calm before the storm. LAFC would draw first blood as Corey Baird slotted home a deflected Mark-Anthony Kaye pass to put the home side up a goal. After an awful turnover by Kaye, however, Jesus Medina would level the match at 1 goal apiece. After a frustrating series of missed opportunities and substitutions, NYCFC scores the winner off a corner in the 90th minute, as an offside-looking Ismael Tajouri-Shradi taps one home on the back post to grab 3 points for the away side. Despite dominating large stretches of the match, LAFC loses and the frustration continues.  Who does Scarf think LAFC could bring in to help right the ship? (It’s a real hot take) When does Filly think the decline of LAFC actually began? And what do the Defenders have in store for the international break? Tune in to Episode 148 to find out! Here’s to hoping better times are in store for LAFC!

NYCFC came out firing from the get-go as Mitrita opened the scoring at the 30-second mark — the fastest goal scored in club history — to give the Cityzens the early 1-0 lead. Despite the visitors being heavily dominated in possession, Frankie Amaya nearly leveled things for Cincinnati in the 23rd as his chance just missed the frame. Anton Tinnerholm, though, converted from an acute angle off a nice pass from Ismael Tajouri-Shradi to double the home side's lead in the 25th, and Mitrita made it a brace in the 43rd as the rout was on. Jesus Medina wrapped up the scoring in the 88th as his free kick deflected off a FC Cincy defender and past Spencer Richey. Cincinnati played this one without Nick Hagglund, who revealed earlier in the afternoon that he had tested positive for COVID-19.
