Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa's cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I've photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I've seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. We had a great visit with our friend, Jim Harmer. Jim was in law school when he began making a living blogging about photography. As a result of those experiences, he started The Income School, which has helped thousands begin their own web based brands. A serial entrepreneur, Jim sold The Income School to pursue another passion, education. He and his wife started the Trekker School, which teaches kids by bringing ”fun, out-of-the-box experiences, technology skills, and entrepreneurship” opportunities so kids can apply their learning. Have fun listening to this episode, Jim's energy is contagious, and his desire to make a difference inspirational!

Good morning everyone! Thank you for listening to Motivated Entrepreneurs and I'm your host, Dean Booty. Today we have a book review and its called "Work Energy" by Jim Harmer. What's Your Work Energy? It was only nine years ago that Jim Harmer worked at a dollar store, stocking shelves while struggling through law school. He had worked hard for his goals, but there was no assurance insight that he would ever achieve them. During that year, he learned the key truth that changed the way Jim viewed himself. He found the one unique quality inside him- one we all have- that gave him a reason to work. He didn’t know it then, but that secret ingredient was his Work Energy. Give it a listen. New section, listener submitted images. Lots of people submitted images. Thank you! Tim Lawson, Eli Temchin, Linda Maier, Alyce Bender, Jon Whitaker, Colin Mayer, Chris Bartell, Benjamin Stuben Farrar, Mike Sirach, Joe Vargas, John Scane. The images I’m choosing are from Colin Mayer. This image is from St. Kilda, Scotland. I really was drawn to this image because it somewhat made me think of the beehive huts in Ireland. But not really. These are quite a bit different. Anyway, the rock texture really comes through well in the foreground building. The entryway is small and you’d have to nearly crawl in it seems. There’s moss or grass or peat on the roof as well and that’s cool, it gives a certain ambiance that is nice and authentic feeling. There’s buildings that are somewhat blurry in the background. They provide a nice background. And behind them there’s more hovels like this foreground element and then in the mid-ground there’s a rock wall that connects to another little moss-covered room. Pretty much the only thing I’d change about this image is the heavy vignette. I think this image needs a vignette, but it needs to be less heavy and probably it should have a custom application as well. You can do this in Lightroom or PS where you brush in the vignette right where you want it. The lower right corner feels a bit empty and that’s probably OK. An image usually benefits from having some negative space. The DOF is small or shallow enough to keep the attention on the foreground building that we don’t really need to worry about the background elements distracting too much. They provide a good stage for the whole scene. Eli Temchin submitted one of an elephant. It’s B&W as well, and it’s quite striking. I love the texture coming through in the skin of the elephant. We see enough of the creature to certainly know what it is, but we only see a small portion of this beast, and that’s a good thing. By zooming in we’re looking more at shapes and forms to communicate the subject, but they are impartial shapes and forms. It’s not complete. This leaves more for the brain to figure out and work on. It’s good that way. There’re two things I’d likely change to this image. I think I’d move the camera slightly more to the left. In the view as it currently is, we almost see the second eye. This leaves a bit too much negative space in the forehead/trunk area. By moving it, we’d have more of the shoulder area on the left side of the frame showing and the eye would be pulled out of the center of the frame. It’s almost in the horizontal center and by moving it a bit to the right we’ll create a bit more tension in the image. Also, the depth-of-field feels a touch too shallow for me on this one. The eye feels slightly soft. But we’d want to keep the crustiness on the front of the face too, so a bit more DOF is needed to accomplish that. Linda Maier submitted one of ice on Yosemite Creek. I decided to also add this image because, well, the ice is likely to soon be melting and I’m really glad to see a good image like this coming together, and that the effort was put in to get out there in this weather and be inspired by what we see. This looks like a mini river flowing from left to right for me. It’s got a great starting point in the upper left corner with some strong elements pointing down and a bit to the right. As the eye travels down the ripples in the ice take over and they bring you off to the right side of the image. There’s a lot of chaos in this image too. I’d say the ice pattern is stronger than texture in this image. But texture certainly does come through nicely. There’s some grasses on the lower portion of the frame that provide context of location. It’s fairly high contrast with lots of highlights and lots of shadow areas and the lines are just squiggling all over the place. One change I’d make on this image would be to crop the rock element out of the top portion of the frame. I find it a bit distracting and letting the ice go off to “nothing” as it were would suggest a larger icefield. Leaving the edge unresolved like that forces the mind to fill in the blanks. Don’t think of it as lying. Think of it as eliciting the imagination! Thanks again to everyone who submitted images. I love it. Next topic for listener images The topic this next time is the color red. However red manifests itself in your image, that’s what I’m looking for. A Quick Announcement/Reminder Before we get to the main topic, I wanted to cover something that recently came up in the Master Photography listener group. I’ll likely make a mention there as well to try and ensure everyone is aware of this. That is, a listener asked us why things were so quiet over there at the IP websites. Especially the IP+ website. I’ve also had a listener ask about the rGPS app that was also published by IP. As far as the app is concerned I was able to contact Jim Harmer a while a go and he gave me a bit of info I can share. Basically the question was, “will it get updated anytime soon?” I don’t recall the exact question from the listener, but that was the main point. They liked the app, but wanted to see some updates happening. Jim stated that he’s buried in other projects but he’d “REALLY” like to do more with it. He also pointed out that there’s so much good data in it that has been added by users. But with the other projects it’s not going to receive any attention in the near future at least. The most recent listener concern was regarding IP+. The biggest thing to ensure everyone is clear on is that there’s no formal business relationship between IP+ and myself, and as far as I know, none of the other podcasters in the Master Photography group either. I contributed one video on camera cleaning and tripod cleaning when I first came on as a contributor. But any videos produced were “one-time” deals and for the last few years I’ve been focusing my efforts on providing my own solutions. Most of you know about the print course I’m developing. That’s still on schedule for an early April release. I’m striving for April 2. I’ll be spending my spring break on finshing it up and getting it ready for everyone. But I continue to spend pretty much each Friday and Sunday getting content produced either for the podcast or this course. And it’s been about three weeks since I last published an episode, so you know where my attention has been going JMe being quiet does not mean I’m taking it easy, that’s for sure! If you’re an IP+ member and you want to know more, I’m afraid I won’t have any answers for you. With that, let’s get on to the main topic. I’m going to blend in the idea of reading the light and making the most out of your shoot as I talk a bit about my trip to Banff National Park in the Canadian Rockies. For the details on this part of the show, please check out this blog post on my main site.
Jim speaks about God moving in our lives.
Latitude Reboot This particular episode is simply an explanation regarding the reboot of the podcast. Latitude was started about a year and a half ago. I planted the idea first by talking to Brian McGuckin and then Jim Harmer at Improve Photography. We started the show on its own feed and then about four to six months later we migrated it to the main IP feed. But now, it’s back on its own separate feed. There’s been a few changes in the last few weeks here in the podcasting world. For details I’ll simply refer you to the episodes in late April, 2018 on the Improve Photography Podcast feed which will change to Master Photography Podcasts by June 2018. This change means that my friend Brian is returning to his first podcast love, Thoughts on Photography. Which is awesome for him. I’m thrilled that TOP is coming back because that’s the first podcast I ever listened too and I just love what Brian was able to do with that show. I’m super excited to see where that takes him. So that leaves us with just me as the main host for the show. There will be a few changes to the show. Most notably, I’m going to shift the focus of the show so that it also includes nature/wildlife and landscape interests. My personal interests lie in the travel and landscape genres of photography but all forms of nature photography will be looked at here. I’ll plan to do destination reports, interviews of photographers that travel and photographers that live is amazing places and I’ll do the occasional gear report from time to time, but usually, gear usage will simply be part of the overall conversation. I do run a rental company and sometimes I’ll use some of that gear in my travels and shoots as well. That’s found at brentrentslenses.com by the way. And finally, I’ll plan to re-release a few of the past episodes as Latitude Replays. In particular I’m thinking about the interviews I did with Jason Savage regarding Olympic National Park and Doug Kaye on Cuba. There’s a couple others I’ll probably bring back from the archives as well. So, this serves as a reboot of the podcast and I greatly appreciate your being here and coming along for the ride. Stay tuned for some great shows. I’m looking to publish fairly regularly every other week during the school year and when I’m on summer break I plan to increase that where possible. Of course, that’s when I’ll do a lot of my traveling, so we’ll just have to see how it goes, but that will be the perfect opportunity to do some episodes on the road as well. As it is now, I’ve got about a year’s worth of show ideas already written down with more to pop up I’m sure. I’ve already got an interview scheduled with a photographer who traveled to some former concentration camps in Poland and another about traveling light with the Fuji system. Then there’s all the places I’ve been to in the past several years that I’ve not been able to do a deep dive into, and a few local or regional spots that I’ll talk about as well. That’s about it for now. Thanks so much for listening and please be sure to hit that subscribe button and tell your friends. Until next time, happy shooting.

Today's Monday Message is about working from home and the challenges we face. We need to make changes and avoid distractions. Change leads to growth and success. Being your own boss may be a great feeling If what you are doing isn’t working you need to take the steps to make it work! You need to change – for the better. A great quote by Chris Voss is “When you blame others you give up your power to change. Take responsibility for your future!” The way I look at it is: If you aren’t happy with where you are at… Change. If your business is so much work the pleasure of being a photographer is slowly drifting away… Change. If the list of things to do feels so overwhelming you’ll never catch up… Change. There are ways around all of these feelings and misconceptions about our businesses and ourselves. So many people I know or meet out there tell me they are unhappy these days. Forget photography for a second. I hear it from a ton of people from all walks of life. The same excuses: “I don’t have enough money.” “I don’t have enough time.” “I don’t have the proper education.” “No one will want me, so why even try.” I have two ways of looking at change and if you understand the meaning behind what I’m about to tell you. Then you will have an easier time moving forward, not just in your business, but your life as well. For your personal life: “Change, when done properly, is based on looking back and the wanting to improve as you move forward.” For your business: “Small amounts of change will add up to dollars. The sooner you make change the sooner you make dollars. The more you make change the more you make dollars.” How to keep going? Well I find it is helpful and necessary to put many systems in place. What do I mean by systems? Well if you remember in episode 024 with Jim Harmer he suggested getting a 30 minute sand timer. So when you have a task you need to do; you start the timer allowing yourself only 30 minutes to complete as much of that task as possible. Once the time is up, you stop whatever task you were working on, flip over the timer and work hard for the next task. - I want to clear a couple things up though first. Just because you only schedule 30 minutes to get a task done doesn’t mean you do what you can and then it’s all over if you don’t make it. Nor does this method suggest rushing though a task in that block of time is a good idea… What this does is the creation of the light at the end of the tunnel for yourself and your work. An end game to help your mind wrap around the fact that in 30 minutes you are going to be done working on that particular task for today. If it’s a bigger project come back to it 2 or 3 times, but give yourself the breaks from one thing and move to the next. A system I have in place is waking up early. Now, I am not a morning person… in fact it is the worst part of my day. However, when I get up at 5:30am, have my coffee, get ready for my day, and then get to work by 6am; that is the best feeling. It feels like I have a good 3 hours’ worth of dedicated “in the zone” work time. Before most others get to work and before my phone starts ringing. You know… I have an email address for Rob Krueger Photography and I have one for Take&TalkPics.com and I have one for my teaching at The College of DuPage; with so many different kinds of email coming in I need to keep things organized for my own sake. So what I do is check on one set of emails just once during the day. I have specific times when I allow myself to take a look and get back to everyone I can. The truth is if you don’t have strict policy in place then there is no reason to follow though. Holding ourselves accountable is the most difficult thing we must do as business owners. For anyone who has or has had a full time day job you can relate to this: It always seems like your boss has nothing better to do than be checking up on you and seeing if you are keeping up with the unrealistic schedule, but that is the majority of their job. As small independent business owners we have no one to answer to; therefore, we only fear ourselves and the potential guilt we may have for not putting forth our best efforts some days. I like to say this: “If I can go to bed at night knowing I did the best I could with my time and my day, then I did okay; tomorrow will be a new test, a fresh start, and a new day to see how I feel before I go to bed that night.” I’m going to leave you Photo World with a quote by Henry Ford: Whether you think you can, or you think you cannot – you are right.” We have to change our lives or accept defeat by not trying. Even if we try and fail, we still learn and grow.
