This episode brings you debatably the coolest pronghorn antelope hunt I've ever done... recorded in the field, while hunting solo on public land. I don't like the word "primitive" so I'll use the term "traditional" to describe my equipment: My rifle was a 1780s-style flintlock muzzleloader charged with blackpowder and a patched round ball. The stars lined up and I was blessed with a 106-yard opportunity on a great buck. Candidly, I'd planned to take any ethical shot opportunity on any mature buck. Instead, I had a shot at the second biggest antelope I've ever hunted. Sitting deep in the sagebrush, my rifle supported by Spartan Precision Equipment's marvelous quad shooting sticks, I squeezed the double-set trigger. The flash of priming powder and the report of the rifle were nearly simultaneous, and through the cloud of blackpowder smoke I saw that .50-caliber, 170-grain round ball literally flatten the buck. I love antelope meat, I love solo hunting on public land, I love God's country and cherish the privilege of hunting... and right now I really love my flintlock rifle! ENJOY! Send us a textThis week on the Montana Outdoor Podcast your host Downrigger Dale has another great conversation with FWP, Game Management Bureau Chief, Brian Wakeling, this time about Montana's Elk Shoulder Seasons. These seasons are already underway in several hunting districts and will go on and off through February 15th, 2026. Just that statement right there is confusing. Thus, there are a whole lot of hunters that pass on giving these elk harvest opportunities a try. Rigger has received a whole lot of emails from many podcast listeners and viewers complaining about that. Folks have said things like "I have a helluva time figuring out what tag I even need in Shoulder Seasons near me" or "Antlerless elk!? Does that mean a cow or calf or what" or "just when I thought I had it figured out, I head out and the landowner said, "hey you can't do that here now that was for last week!" And the list goes on and on. That's why your host Downrigger Dale said "not this year, all that confusion needs to be cleared up and Brian Wakeling is the perfect guy for the job. Brian is excellent at explaining everything you need to know about Elk Shoulder Seasons. During the podcast Brian even opened the 2025 hunting regulations and showed some examples of where to look for Shoulder Season info and more importantly what all that info means. Once you listen or watch this podcast you will be walking around with a big beautiful light bulb above your head! True you won't be bringing home a trophy mount, but you will be able to fill your freezer with delicious elk meat! That is way better than sipping on a mug of tag soup! So what are ya waiting for ya brilliant meat eater? Go mash that play button and listen or better yet watch and learn all about it! In this episode, Trail sits down with the Brock Wahl and David Gough of the North American Pronghorn Foundation to talk about the real challenges facing one of the West's most iconic game animals. From feral horses to sagebrush steppe and grassland habitat loss and fragmented migration corridors to increasing pressure to sell public lands, the pronghorn's future isn't as secure as most of us might think. We dig into the science, the politics, and the boots-on-the-ground work being done to keep herds healthy and huntable. We also tackle the hot topic of predator management, how hunters can help beyond just buying a tag, and what it takes to protect the wide-open spaces pronghorn need to survive.
This week on Sheep Fever we visit with Eric Dippold, Secretary for the newly formed North American Pronghorn Foundation. A uniquely North American goat species often referred to as being in the antelope family, the pronghorn is a cherished big game species by sportsmen from around the world and an out-the-window wildlife viewing favorite of travelers indicating they are now “out west.” As celebrated as they are, there has never been an organization dedicated to their future, until now, and their timing couldn't be better. Every year in one area or another where pronghorn range, we hear of one population challenge or another. Mostly its losses over an extreme winter. As tough as these deaths are to witness, weather events are often viewed as out of our hands, or are they? Are antelope loosing critical habitat? Yes. Could their historical migration corridors be less obstructed? Yes. Are too many predators an issue? Yes. This sums up the mission of this new organization of which WSF is in full partnership-mode support. Join the NAPF today at this link: https://www.pronghorns.org/
In this episode of The Western Rookie podcast, Brian Krebs hosts a packed conversation featuring Dean Krebs, Tad Johnson, and Collin Fountain from the newly formed North American Pronghorn Foundation (NAPF). Together, they dive deep into why pronghorn needed their own conservation group, the unique challenges these animals face, and the exciting projects NAPF has planned to protect and enhance pronghorn populations across the West. Key topics discussed: Why pronghorn are uniquely impacted by fencing and what NAPF is doing to help. The surprising biological needs of pronghorn compared to mule deer and other western wildlife. Insights into the huge impact severe winters and infrastructure have on pronghorn migrations. The critical importance of wildlife corridors and fence modifications to pronghorn survival. Specific, actionable ways listeners can support and get involved with pronghorn conservation. Ready to help make a difference for pronghorn? This week, Scott sat down with his Lawfare colleagues Benjamin Wittes and Natalie Orpett, and University of Virginia School of Law professor Ashley Deeks, to talk through the week's big national security news, including:“Bracing for Fallout.” In a surprise move, President Trump joined Israel's military campaign against Iran over the weekend, using a specialized U.S. ordinance to hit Iranian nuclear sites that were beyond Israel's early reach. It's unclear to what extent the attack set back Iran's nuclear ambitions, and debates continue to rage whether the president's actions were wise or legal. But it did trigger an Iranian response against U.S. military bases in the Persian Gulf — action that was shortly followed by a tentative U.S.-backed ceasefire between Iran and Israel. What best explains the president's decision to join the military campaign? And what will the consequences be, both in the region and back home in the United States?“Destinations Unknown.” In a short, unexplained opinion in the matter of DHS v. DVD this past week, the Supreme Court stayed a lower court preliminary injunction that had barred the Trump administration from removing immigrants to third countries with minimal procedural protections against threats of torture and other mistreatment. But the exact ramifications of this holding are unclear, as the Justice Department has now returned to the Court asking for clarification as to whether its ruling also invalidates a later order applying the class-wide prohibition in the initial preliminary injunction to a specific group of individuals. What explains the Supreme Court's odd approach in this case? And what could its broader ramifications be for the Trump administration's immigration agenda?“‘Bove the Law.” A now-public internal Justice Department whistleblower report alleges that Principal Associate Deputy Attorney General—and current Third Circuit nominee—Emil Bove endorsed plans to disregard judicial orders that would have obstructed the removal of foreign nationals in directing the Department of Homeland Security that it did not need to return certain deportation flights already in the air after a judge directed as much from the bench. How serious a transgression has Bove committed if these allegations are true? And what impact will they have on his Third Circuit confirmation? In object lessons, forget day-of-the-week underpants (or pronghorn shirts)! Ben spurs on a need for more day-of-the-week monsters with the last weather report you'll ever need. Natalie is escaping, not just from reality but also from the heat, with her local bookstore, East City Bookshop. Scott shared the heartbreaking news that The Atlantic is stealing yet another Rational Security co-host emeritus as our beloved Quinta Jurecic begins her next crazy venture beneath the skies (Quinta, we miss you already!). And Ashley, channeling our bereavement at Quinta's departure, recommends Alone on the History Channel. To receive ad-free podcasts, become a Lawfare Material Supporter at www.patreon.com/lawfare. Fencing is a fundamental part of ranching, but not all fences are created equal. In this episode of the Ranch Stewards Podcast, host Haylie Shipp dives into the benefits of wildlife-friendly fencing—also known as modified farm fencing—with RSA Conservation Coordinator Martin Townsend, Phillips County rancher Mark French, and Brett Dorak from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks. From a rancher's perspective, these fences aren't just about wildlife—they make sense for the operation, too. A higher bottom wire allows Pronghorn and other wildlife to pass underneath, maintaining critical migration corridors. At the same time, this design helps protect fences from snow rot, extending their lifespan and reducing maintenance. Across the region, aging fences are being replaced, and ranchers are working alongside wildlife professionals to ensure that new fencing works for both livestock and migrating species. The conversation also explores how Pronghorn are monitored and collared to track their movements, providing valuable data on migration patterns. Plus, the group discusses available resources to help with fencing projects, making it easier for ranchers to implement these practical, long-lasting solutions. For details on this method of fencing, check out this infographic: https://tinyurl.com/2va5y8ka To listen to the virtual fencing podcast discussed within the show, check out our episode from Nov 21, 2024, titled "An Unfiltered Rancher Response to Virtual Fencing."Tune in to hear how collaboration between ranchers and conservationists is creating a win-win for working lands and wildlife! The Ranchers Stewardship Alliance (RSA) is a rancher-led, grassroots organization, dedicated to improving the quality of life for rural communities throughout the Northern Great Plains. The non-alcoholic cocktail space is booming, and Mocktail Club is one of the brands leading the charge. Founded by Pauline Idogho, Mocktail Club is redefining the way people experience sophisticated, alcohol-free drinks. Since launching in 2019, the brand has expanded into 1,300 retail locations, including Whole Foods, Sprouts, Kings, and Target, and is on track to produce 2 million cans this year.Pauline didn't come from the drinks world — her background is in investment banking and private equity, where she closed some $10 billion in transactions before pivoting to entrepreneurship. That financial acumen has fueled Mocktail Club's smart growth strategy, taking the brand from small-batch startup to a nationally recognized player in the rapidly expanding non-alcoholic beverage market. In this episode, Pauline shares: How a closing dinner while pregnant sparked the idea for Mocktail Club — and why she knew the market was underserved. Why she chose globally inspired flavors with ingredients like shrub bases, teas, and spices instead of mimicking classic cocktails. Her strategy for breaking into Whole Foods, scaling her retail footprint, and now moving into alcohol distribution channels. How she built Mocktail Club as a mission-driven brand, donating 1% of sales to Water for People and committing to sustainability. What it takes to fundraise successfully in the drinks industry, including how she secured investment from the incubator Pronghorn. Why the non-alc consumer is a cross-category buyer, and how retailers are finally recognizing this growing segment.Last Call:Every month, another celebrity launches a non-alc brand. But does it really work? In Last Call, we break down a Punch article by Hannah Walhout that asks: Are you even famous if you don't have a non-alc drink line?We debate:- Wellness or virtue signaling? – Are celebrities jumping into non-alc for health reasons—or just to boost their luxury image?- Social media marketing – A photo of Bella Hadid in Target holding Kin Euphorics works…but does it build long-term brand loyalty?- Authenticity vs. cash grab – Some celebs have stakes in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic brands. Pronghorns, also called antelope, are one of the coolest animals in Montana. They have lived in North America since the last ice age when woolly mammoths and cheetahs roamed the region. Those animals are gone, but the pronghorns remain. For four years Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks scientists, aided by graduate students, conducted a study of eight pronghorn populations across the state. Here to tell us more about what the study revealed is Billings Gazette outdoor editor Brett French.

Navigating the alcohol and spirits industry can be complex, especially for Black entrepreneurs. Monique sits down with industry leaders Dia Simms and Erin J. Hall to discuss how you can break into this lucrative field. Despite making up 15% of the U.S. population and being long-time consumers, Black individuals remain significantly underrepresented in the spirits industry, occupying only about 7% of the roles. This episode is designed to empower you with the knowledge needed to explore untapped opportunities, whether you're currently in the industry, considering entry, or simply want to understand its dynamics better. Dia and Erin founded Pronghorn, a leading accelerator program investing in Black-owned brands to drive $2.4 billion of economic value over the next decade. Global beverage alcohol leader Diageo backed Pronghorn in 2021, committing $200 million based on the achievement of key milestones within a ten-year plan to diversify the spirits industry. Pronghorn offers cash investments, education, and partnerships with industry leaders to help Black entrepreneurs succeed. You'll hear about their journey, valuable insights from their experiences, and how Pronghorn has secured deals and partnerships resulting in a 5% increase in Black representation. DURING THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN: Untapped opportunities in the spirits industry for Black entrepreneurs. The role of local press and smaller platforms in building brand awareness. Strategies for managing distribution channels effectively in the spirits industry. The significance of understanding market data and targeting specific audiences. The importance of producing culturally forward content as a Black-owned vendor. Tips on leaning into technology and innovation in flavor and packaging. It seems that anywhere Boone & Crockett mule deer grow there is potential for solar development. On today's episode, Robby hosts Joel Webster and Rob Thornberry of the Theodore Conservation Partnership (TRCP) Recently the Bureau of Land Management proposed solar installation on public lands covering 22 million acres in 11 western states. This matters to mule deer hunters and other big game hunters because solar development is fenced, blocking Mule Deer Migration Routes and other wildlife from using an area. If the fencing occurs on critical mule deer migration routes, this could cut off big game from accessing important summer and winter ranges. With deer herds already down across much of the West, this could just make matters worse by making vital big game habitats unusable. They talk specifically about the hunting units at stake, especially Idaho deer and pronghorn units. Then they jump into the remaining western states, naming herds with significant conflict in each state, such as the Paunsaugunt in Utah and the Kaibab in Arizona. This important episode should serve as a reality check about the future. Joel and Rob wrap up the episode with information on what hunters and anglers can do about it. Involved hunters are conservationists and are the thin line between healthy and unhealthy big game herds, so please listen in and get involved. (4:50) • 31 years later [in my marriage] here I am Commissioner for Arizona Game & Fish; sitting on the executive committee of NRA Women's Leadership Forum; I sit on the Arizona Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Board, I'm involved with the Women's Outdoor Media Association, supporting foundation for women warriors. I do a lot of hunting with wounded warriors and females from that group and do a lot of outdoor experiences for all associations here in Arizona. (7:44). • 50% of gun sales have been new gun sales to women. I think it's fantastic, but you gotta get training, and once you get training, you can't get stale, you have to keep training. (9:28) • When you [Melanie] and Deb and I started the She Never Quit down at your beautiful ranch in Texas, we had women who had never seen a gun. To teach them not only how to shoot, but the safety behind it is critically important. (9:43) • A woman came up and she says “We just have to get rid of all these guns in the world.” I said so what you're saying is I don't have the right to keep myself safe, is that what I'm hearing you say? “Well no, that's not what I mean.” Well that's what you're saying when you say that. (12:03) • Some people will never have an open mind. (16:12) • There's some people that just will not, and won't know, and don't know how to listen. (16:23) • {Marcus] “You know how bad I wanna fly the space Shuttle?” (17:01) • You teach the woman, you teach the family (18:40) • Kids don't understand the consequence of doing something anymore. And there's no core of morality it seems to me. (22:08) • [Melanie] Our leaders act like divorced husband and wife; they argue in front of us, whether that's our President or Congress. (23:14) • How do you teach the parents and the teachers how they're basically ruining these kids' lives? Where do we start? (24:34) • We make contracts through Arizona Game & Fish with the ranchers, and we will go out and take out the barbed wire on the fence and put in smooth wire 18” high because the Pronghorn actually go under a fence. They rarely will go over a fence. (27:35) • [Marcus] Humans, by nature, like to see things get destroyed & beat up. (37:44)

It's an action packed show this week on the Oklahoma Outdoors Podcast! John starts things off with a bold prediction for this year's deer season you are going to want to hear. After that, Oklahoma State University Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management Assistant Professor Colter Chitwood joins the show to talk about a few research projects he is involved with around the state of Oklahoma and beyond. The first topic the guys discuss is a research project following pronghorn in the Oklahoma Panhandle. Colter and his team have been collaring and tracking pronghorn to learn more about their home ranges, fawn recruitment, and most importantly, whether or not the population is declining or not. After a nice long chat about pronghorn, Colter talks about another similar research project on wild turkeys. It is no secret that numbers appear to be declining across much of the country and especially in the southeastern United States, and Colter sheds some light on a few reasons why a decline may be taking place, and some practical things hunters and conservationists can do to have a positive impact on those populations. And just because why the heck not, John and Colter finish the episode off with some good old wolf talk. Colter is fortunate enough to work on a grey wolf population study on Prince of Wales Island off the coast of Alaska. John talks a little bit about his experience with wolves in the north west while in college, and the guys talk about how sometimes the biggest obstacle in managing a species is just how cute they are.
