From his first experiences with disposable cameras as a child to leading a team of photographers at one of the world's largest single-day sporting events, Chris details the technical, creative, and logistical challenges that come with high-paced event photography. He explains how persistence, adaptability, and a passion for storytelling have shaped his career. Chris offers practical advice for breaking into event and sports photography, highlighting the importance of volunteering, networking, and being proactive with your portfolio. KEY TOPICS COVEREDBreaking into Event Photography & Building a Career - Chris discusses his early fascination with capturing memories, the path from hobby to professional, and strategies for getting noticed—including the power of volunteering and keeping a portfolio visible.Operational & Creative Challenges at the Indy 500 - The massive scale of the event requires intricate planning, teamwork, and shot lists; photographers often multitask and cover everything from action shots to sponsor events.Creative Storytelling in Fast-Paced Environments - Chris shares the importance of finding unique angles, moving beyond standard shots, and using techniques like slow shutter speeds to capture both speed and atmosphere.IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS & CONCEPTSShot List: A detailed plan assigning photographers to specific events, angles, or moments, ensuring coverage of all necessary aspects of a large event. Relevance: Essential for organizing coverage at events as vast as the Indy 500.DISCUSSION & REFLECTION QUESTIONSHow does volunteering and working for free early in your career add value, and when should you start charging for your work? What are the unique storytelling opportunities at massive sporting events compared to smaller assignments? In what ways can photographers push themselves beyond “safe shots” to develop a recognizable style or perspective?RESOURCES:Visit Chris Owens' Website - https://www.chrisowensphotography.com/Follow Chris Owens on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/chrisowens/Grab your free 52 Lightroom Presets athttp://freephotographypresets.com/ Sign up for your free CloudSpot Account today at www.DeliverPhotos.comConnect with Raymond! #564 In this episode of the podcast, I dive deep into the idea that while capturing the right moment in photography matters most, it's not everything. I share my own experiences as a photographer, especially those early days when I felt overwhelmed by all the camera settings—aperture, shutter speed, ISO—and how easy it is to get distracted by what influencers say you need in terms of new gear. I open up about how sharing my photos online sometimes left me second-guessing myself when the feedback was harsh or not constructive, and how important it is for our mental health to not tie our self-worth to internet commentary.KEY TOPICS COVEREDThe Role of Moment in Great Photography - I talk about why the “moment” is king, but also share a story of photographing race cars with my son to show that technical choices—like shutter speed—are what give your images the power to convey emotion and story.Overcoming Overwhelm and Gear Envy - I reflect on my struggles with self-doubt, gear lust, and how feeling unskilled led me to blame my camera for missed shots. I encourage you to focus on learning and being patient with yourself instead of obsessing over equipment or social media critique.Shooting in Manual and Preparing for the Moment - I break down my personal workflow, from choosing settings to working with couples, so you can enter your sessions confident in exposure and ready to pay attention to the fleeting moments that matter.IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS & CONCEPTSManual Mode: The camera setting where the photographer controls ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, rather than letting the camera choose. This gives more creative control and removes uncertainty about exposure.Exposure: The overall brightness or darkness of a photograph, determined by settings such as shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Proper exposure is essential for capturing high-quality moments.DISCUSSION & REFLECTION QUESTIONSHow has mastering camera settings changed the way you feel during a shoot?Have social media comments ever affected your confidence? HT2142 - Increasing Your Odds of a Sharp Image with a Slow Shutter Speed I love simple solutions to pesky problems. One of the odd advantages of digital photography is that we can capture as many images as we want and then discard the bad ones later. We don't have to worry about the cost of film and processing like we did in the old days. This opens the door to a statistical advantage that is worth exploiting.
#525 In this episode of the podcast, I chat with Chris Britton, a talented photographer and father who juggles family life with his passion for capturing moments. Chris beautifully articulates the balance between creative freedom and client expectations, the importance of being present, and overcoming social media pressures.THE BIG IDEASBalance Creativity and Client Desires: Blend your artistic vision with client needs to create compelling images that satisfy both parties. Be Present in the Moment: Stay engaged and mindful during shoots to capture authentic, meaningful photographs. Overcome Social Media Pressure: Focus on personal growth and expression rather than social media metrics like likes and shares. Embrace Imperfection: Accept noise and other imperfections as part of the creative process, enhancing your willingness to experiment.PHOTOGRAPHY ACTION PLANStay Present in Your Shoots: Turn off notifications during photo sessions to minimize distractions. Take a moment to breathe and observe your surroundings before pressing the shutter.Experiment with Light and Color: Use natural window light to explore different moods and effects. Try adding warm tones in Lightroom by adjusting the color temperature or using split toning.Blend Creativity and Practicality: Plan a family photoshoot with a mix of candid and posed shots to practice balancing client and personal creativity. Set specific creative goals for each shoot, such as trying new compositions or lighting setups.Improve Your Technical Skills: Spend time learning to control shutter speed and aperture to tell clearer stories. Experiment with different ISO settings to find the balance between reducing noise and maintaining image quality.Enhance Your Post-Processing Consistency: Calibrate your monitor using built-in tools or a dedicated calibration device to ensure color accuracy. Create a preset in Lightroom that matches your preferred style for easy and consistent editing.RESOURCES:Follow Chris Britton on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/iamchrisbritton/ Grab your free 52 Lightroom Presets athttp://freephotographypresets.com/ Build Your Dream Photography Business and Keep More of the Money You Earn with CloudSpot Studio. And get my Wedding and Portrait Contract and Questionnaires, at no cost!Sign up now at http://deliverphotos.com/Connect with the Beginner Photography Podcast! Welcome to the Visual Storytelling podcast. Let's discuss what causes photos to be blurry. Photos can be blurry due to various reasons: 1. Camera Shake. 2. Low Light. 3. Auto-Focus Errors. 4. Motion Blur. 5. Shutter Speed. 6. Lens Quality. 7. Depth of Field. 8. ISO Settings. 9. Aperture Size. 10. Camera Settings. 11. Vibration or Wind. 12. Subject Movement. 13. Dirty Sensor. 14. Lens Stabilisation. 15. Improper Focusing Technique. 16. Software Processing. 17. Optical Aberrations. 18. Long Exposure. 19. Macro Photography; and 20. Outdated Equipment. Addressing these factors through proper technique, equipment, and settings can help reduce or eliminate blur in photos. A number of the causes I've mentioned I explored in more depth in episode 18, so be sure to check that episode out if you'd like to learn more. In this episode of the podcast, I delve into the fundamental difference between knowledge and wisdom in photography. Through personal anecdotes and reflective insights, I stress the value of hands-on experience over merely consuming information. We explore why wisdom, gained through actual shooting, ultimately surpasses theoretical knowledge. I encourage you to put down your instructional guides and pick up your camera. Apply what you learn by engaging in deliberate practice, experimenting with different techniques, and cultivating your unique photographic perspective. Remember, every photo you take brings you closer to capturing your vision authentically.THE BIG IDEASExperience Over Theory: Real wisdom in photography comes from practical experience, not just watching tutorials.Embrace Mistakes: Learning from failed attempts is crucial for growth. Every mistake is a lesson.Personal Insight: Only you can determine the best settings and approaches for your vision. Trust your instincts.Practical Knowledge Application: Applying what you know in real-world situations refines your skills and judgment.PHOTOGRAPHY ACTION PLANShoot Daily: Allocate 15 minutes each day to photograph anything around you. Analyze these daily photos to identify areas for improvement.Create a Photography Journal: Record settings, conditions, and thoughts each time you shoot. Review your notes weekly to track progress and refine techniques.Join a Photography Challenge: Participate in online photo contests or challenges to motivate regular practice. Focus on themes that push you out of your comfort zone.Experiment with Different Settings: Use manual mode to understand the effects of varying ISO, aperture, and shutter speed. Take the same shot with different settings and compare the outcomes.Evaluate and Edit: Spend time critiquing your photos, focusing on what works and what doesn't. PORTRAITSHOOTING - NIEDERLANDE-TRIP - FRAGEN
In today's episode of the podcast, I chat with portrait photographer Cris Duncan about mastering light with an umbrella for your flash and creating dimension in your photographs to transform your photographic techniques and storytelling. The Big IdeasEmbrace Manual Mode with Flash: Unlock the true potential of your creativity by understanding how aperture and shutter speed interact with flash, enhancing your artistic expression.Practice Leads to Instinct: With regular implementation, you'll develop an instinctual grasp of lighting, leading to faster setups and more confident shooting.Light Shapes Stories: Learn to control light to sculpt the narrative of your photos, using hierarchy and contrast to direct the viewer's attention where you want it most.Modifiers are Game-changers: Discover affordable tools like umbrellas that soften light, adding depth and nuance to your portraits, and elevate the professional quality of your work.Photography Action Plan:Practice Shutter Speed Variations with Flash: Take your camera and flash unit, set the camera to manual mode, and experiment with various shutter speeds. Observe how changing the shutter speed affects the areas of your photo not illuminated by the flash. Aim to shoot in both bright and dimly lit conditions to see how ambient light interacts with the flash at different shutter speeds, remembering that flash exposure remains constant.Master Lighting Placement: Position your light source at a 45-degree angle from your subject to create appealing shadow and depth, enhancing the three-dimensionality of your portraits. Use a reflector to bounce light onto the shadow side of the subject, experimenting with reflector distance and angle to manipulate shadow density and contrast.Utilize Umbrellas for Soft Lighting: Incorporate a bounce or translucent umbrella into your setup to diffuse and soften the light. Begin by pointing a bounce umbrella towards your subject and adjusting the spread of light accordingly. For larger groups, opt for a bigger umbrella to ensure even light distribution across all individuals, and try using translucent umbrellas for a wider light spread when necessary.Control Contrast with Off-Camera Flash: Detach your flash from the camera and place it off to the side to create more dynamic lighting with visible shadows, which contribute to the form and texture in your photos. Test shooting outdoors with off-camera flash to balance the daylight and flash exposure, giving you more control over the contrast and mood of your images. Learn and Apply Light Hierarchy: Begin by crafting a lighting plan that assigns priority to different elements of your scene, such as main subject illumination, background, and accent lighting, based on your creative objectives. Part 3 should be a breeze after getting through Part 2: Aperture. I do this on purpose actually, give you the setting and control that takes some mind wrangling to wrap our heads around and then let you breeze through this episode that is all about our Shutter Speed. Shutter Speed is synonymous with motion, though when we're shooting at night the rules are a wee-bit different than what we're used to during the day.The biggest thing we need to pay attention to with our shutter speed is blur due to camera instability or settings (and whether or not we want it)As promised, here is the shutter speed scale, in FULL stops, as I told you in the episode, full seconds are denoted by " after the number:30" 15"8" 4"2"1"1/21/41/81/151/301/601/1251/2501/5001/10001/2000I would love for you to sign up for my free Your First Milky Way Photo training here if you haven't already:https://kristinerosephotography.com/yourfirstmilkywayphoto

On this Community Spotlight episode of The Beginner Photography Podcast, I chat with Sheila Bragg, an active member in the BPP community. Sheila shares her journey into photography and how she struggled with understanding aperture and shutter speed until discovering the podcast. Sheila also shares tips on lenses, finding inspiration, and understanding the exposure triangle. We discuss Sheila's ultimate goal of establishing herself as a photographer and traveling the world. Finally, the conversation shifts to framing, where I ask Sheila about the hardest aspect of composition for her. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced photographer, this episode offers valuable insights and tips to take your photography skills to the next level.Sheila Bragg grew up spending her summers in Ohio with her family's portrait studio where she developed a passion for photography. She always carried a camera with her and loved taking pictures of everything, but it wasn't until she found a podcast that explained aperture and shutter speed in a way that made sense to her that she started shooting manually. Now she can adjust her settings without looking at the camera and even experiments with underexposing her photos for a different effect. Although people always told her she should pursue photography, Sheila never took it seriously until she quit her degree program. The Big Ideas with Timestamps[00:01:41] Discovering Photography: From Disposable Cameras to Manual Settings[00:05:45] "Photographer sets 10-year goal to travel world"[00:11:10] "Judging Photography: Quality, Framing, and Lighting"[00:23:04] "Maximizing Image Quality: The Art of Cropping"[00:31:02] "Navigating the Lens Jungle: Which One to Use?"[00:33:49] "Adjusting to a New Lens: My Journey"[00:39:20] "Capturing Inspiration: A Photographer's Quest for Improvement"[00:46:56] "Discovering the Power of Podcasts While Learning"[00:52:44] "Exposure Triangle: Understanding the Three Settings Together"[00:54:57] "Expand Your Photography Skills with Unexpected Shots"Resources and LinksCheck out Sheila Bragg's WebsiteFollow Sheila on FacebookJoin The Beginner Photography Podcast CommunitySign up for your free CloudSpot account to deliver beautiful images galleries todayFree Lightroom Presets! A re-watch with Shutter Speed, eye infections and dream-state grievances. What's not to love? We also love our list of general wondering-ments. Lots of questions! We actually think the plotline for Shutter Speed sounds really good and somebody should make that movie. Who's in? Although, they need to work out the they-met-on-the-subway-but-the-movie-is-set-in-the-desert contradiction real quick. No drops ever make it into Rachel's eye for the entire episode...just to be clear. Did Chandler literally walk all the way back to Central Perk without appearing tired or disheveled in any way? WTF with the pants, Monica? Joey's scored a starring role in a movie that's filming in the desert outside of Vegas. Excited for a guys road trip, Chandler joins him but Joey kicks him out of the car when he lets it slip that he doesn't think this is going to be Joey's big break. Rachel has an eye infection but refuses to do anything to treat it. Phoebe is mad at Ross for something but she can't remember what it is. It turns out that it may have all just been a dream. All clips are property of Warner Media. Find us on Instagram! Leave us 5 stars and a review. Thanks for being here and for listening.

We hit the ground running this episode with some #HotGoss about a member of the cast (we simply can't say more than that). Then we get onto the actual point of the episode, a season 5 highlight. There's yet more eye doctor chat and we narrowly avoid re-litigating the optician vs ophthalmologist case. We ponder what Honey Puffed Wheat is made out of (.....), try out Phoebe's game and debate whether Shutter Speed would be better than Interstellar and Ant-Man (almost certainly). Oh and some bridge identification and eye-drop guidance. Something for everyone. That game should not be played without my supervision.

In this episode "Shutter Speed Is?" Shutter speed is an essential part of how we expose for a photograph. But it has a much greater influence on how we tell our visual story. You understand this basic yet essential tool?
#004 - If you shoot a video in an automatic mode, like Aperture priority, you can get some fairly unnatural looking video. It won't look smooth. Movement will look jittery and jumpy. And when your videos don't look like real life, the viewer will be distracted from the message you're trying to deliver. That's why you'll want to shoot in manual mode to pick the proper shutter speed and frame rate to get the best looking video possible. In this episode I discuss what to set those at and how they effect what your video looks like. Last episode we talked all about aperture, which introduced us to the exposure triangle, so if you haven't listened to that one yet, you might want to before this one.http://www.DIYVideoGuy.com/4
