A successful Wellington business owner says if he were starting again today, he wouldn't start his business in Wellington. "Whether you should do it in Wellington though, I would say no. I think Wellington is actually talent repellent system at the moment," Raygun founder John-Daniel Trask told Nick Mills. "We've had people in our own organisation who have left and said I'm going to places like Auckland because they are so tired – their own words – of the abject wokeness that is in this city." Trask's business sells software that monitors other software for faults, with 93% of its customers based overseas. The company employs 25 staff in Wellington. Also joining Trask was Jugnu's Little India founder Jugnu Gill. Gill owns three of the Indian restaurants across Wellington, having opened his first restaurant in the city in 1997. "Wellington is not in good shape. There are very few places that are doing really well in Wellington at the moment," Gill said. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A timely reminder, an important one too, for me last night. I'm in Wellington, flew into the schmozzle storm yesterday for an event. It's easily one of the most beautiful cities in New Zealand, is it not? Can we all agree on that? With the hills jutting out of the harbour, all of the bush surrounding it. It is stunning and the weather was good, so that helped. It was absolutely beautiful flying in, and then you land and there's the road cones, and there's the Uber driver not happy, and the mayor's in meltdown, and the government's taking over, and the council is all over the place. Shambles, schmozzle, all that stuff. But then this event last night featured and honoured a couple of Wellington business people. Among them was Brian McGuinness, whose family have either built or refurbished basically half of Wellington – including Government House, which I found fascinating. Doug Hauraki was a name you will know, he was on there as well. Great Wellingtonian. Many were honoured there, but the speeches particularly got me last night, got me right in the guts. These are guys who have seen it all – Wellington at its best, Wellington at its absolute worst. When it's the crown, the jewel, when it's the butt of our jokes. And their message essentially was politics is temporary. Like any city, the real pulse, the Real Engine Room is private enterprise. Always has been, always will be. And there was a tech guru, John Daniel Trask, who spoke last night, he said we shouldn't always look to the Council, to the Government, to fix our problems or to make things better because for the most part, we can actually do it on our own, we can solve problems on our own. Sure, there are some issues that only government and council can look after that only government and council have a purview over, but for most things, we can actually do it ourselves. And so that is true of Wellington, Wellington is no exception. Wellington will come back, and probably doesn't help that people like me sit in front of microphones in Auckland and bleat about the place. But you know, it's fun from a distance, quite different up close. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

He has been developing software for over 30 years, has produced 14 products, built 4 joint ventures, invests in start-ups, and spends his days leading Raygun and building Lego with his family. Troy and JD chat about his story from knowing he was going to be a successful entrepreneur at 9 years old, building products that have scaled more than most NZ companies and performance culture. JD is not shy in giving his opinions on things and we loved that. He talks honestly and authentically about what he views as a high-performing culture and what he believes employees are really looking for. We hope you enjoy this as much as we did. Ok, we've done that weird thing again and went off the main line of the podcast to sneakily injected an interview. After last week's episode about how things change in the tech industry in these pandemic times, we thought it'd be interesting to get some other people's views on remote work and business continuity planning. Let's face it: Lara, Miguel and I have very clear views on why we prefer remote work and at the same time have less experience from working in *really large* organisations. Also - our respective business setups are rather small, family-sized operations and we don't face challenges that come with being responsible for employees. In episode 6A we're having a chat with John-Daniel (JD) Trask, one of the co-founders and CEO of Raygun. They have about 50 staff in Wellington, New Zealand as well as Seattle in the US and some remote contributors in various places in the world. After the novel coronavirus and Covid-19 took off globally (and then in NZ), JD has made a very early decision to switch from an office-based setup with occasional remote work to a make everyone work remote. Some people perceived that to be *so* early, that he even had to face some criticism for undertaking this step.We got together (obviously physically distancing) to talk about their situation, what JD's reasoning was for acting early and how it's been working out so far. Have fun listening and wash your hands!!!

Tools like error monitoring, crash reporting, and performance monitoring are tools to help you create a better user experience and are fast becoming crucial tools for web development and site reliability. But really what are they? And when do you need them? You've built a cool web app or service, and you want to make sure your customers have a great experience. You know I advocate for utilizing automated tests so you find bugs before your customers do. However, fast development lifecycles, and quickly reacting to customer needs is a good thing, and we all know that complete testing is not possible. That's why I firmly believe that site monitoring tools like logging, crash reporting, performance monitoring, etc are awesome for maintaining and improving user experience. John-Daniel Trask, JD, the CEO of Raygun, agreed to come on the show and let me ask all my questions about this whole field. Special Guest: John-Daniel Trask.
