For decades, nuclear has struggled with cost overruns and delays — Georgia's Vogtle plant being the latest example. Kairos Power co-founder and CEO Mike Laufer thinks the solution is to flip the script: focus first on non-nuclear demonstrations and then iterate quickly. It's a counterintuitive and potentially risky strategy . Rapid iteration isn't the way engineers or funders like the DOE have traditionally developed nuclear plants. Kairos also combined two technologies — TRISO fuel and molten salt — into a first-of-a-kind design. Theoretically it would be safer, but Kairos was also tackling one of the hardest problems in engineering: building a reactor from scratch. After eight years of development, its approach has led to three engineering test units, a novel contracting model with the Department of Energy, and a landmark partnership with TVA and Google to deliver nuclear power to data centers. So how did Kairos pull it off? In this episode, Lara talked with Mike about how Kairos executed its ambitious iterative approach without overextending itself. They also cover why Kairos chose to vertically integrate and build its own in-house machine shop, plus what technical setbacks taught the team. Credits: Hosted by Lara Pierpoint. When it comes to medical science, there's never been a better time to be alive than now… other than maybe a few months ago before the new Trump administration. Americans today are living longer than ever before, and that's owed in no small part to the National Institutes of Health—a government organization that has been responsible for some of the most significant biomedical advancements in the history of healthcare. Unfortunately, the Trump administration just virtually annihilated the NIH, and sentient gob of clay and anti-vax charlatan RFK Jr. is now in charge of the future of American health. To figure how how to navigate this insane dichotomy of medical potential and squandered medical possibility, Adam speaks with Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist and scientist, and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute. Dr. Topol's book, Super Agers: An Evidence-Based Approach to Longevity, explores the cutting edge advancements in living longer, healthier lives—advancements which are now in jeopardy. BUFFALO, NY — June 25, 2025 — A new #research paper was #published in Aging (Aging-US) Volume 17, Issue 5, on May 28, 2025, titled “Investigating telomere length in progeroid syndromes: implications for aging disorders.” In this study, led by first author Luma Srour and corresponding authors Yosra Bejaoui and Nady El Hajj, from Hamad Bin Khalifa University, Qatar Foundation, researchers investigated whether shortened telomeres, a marker of cellular aging, are present across various rare genetic disorders that mimic early aging, known as progeroid syndromes. The study found that telomere shortening, also called telomere attrition, is not a shared characteristic of all these disorders. This finding is important because it challenges the belief that telomere loss is a common thread in premature aging and could help refine how these syndromes are studied and treated. Progeroid syndromes are rare conditions that cause individuals to display symptoms of aging far earlier than expected. While some of these syndromes share signs of typical aging, others arise from very different genetic alterations. Researchers focused on comparing telomere length in individuals with several of these syndromes to better understand how aging develops at the cellular level. Telomeres are protective ends of chromosomes that shorten as cells divide, acting as a biological clock linked to aging and disease. Using DNA methylation data from blood samples, the team analyzed telomere length in patients with six progeroid syndromes: Werner Syndrome, Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome, Berardinelli-Seip Congenital Lipodystrophy type 2, Dyskeratosis Congenita, Cerebroretinal Microangiopathy with Calcifications and Cysts, and Wiedemann-Rautenstrauch Syndrome. They found significant telomere shortening only in classical Werner Syndrome, Berardinelli-Seip Congenital Lipodystrophy type 2, and Dyskeratosis Congenita. Other syndromes, including the widely studied Hutchinson-Gilford Progeria Syndrome, did not show this pattern. “To investigate whether progeroid syndromes have telomere attrition, we calculated telomere length using the DNAmAge web-based calculator.” The findings suggest that telomere shortening cannot be used as a universal marker for all forms of premature aging. In fact, some syndromes linked to DNA repair problems showed telomere damage, while others with different genetic mutations did not. These results indicate that the underlying biology of each syndrome is crucial in determining whether telomere shortening plays a role. Researchers also compared telomere lengths in people with genetic variants known to protect against age-related diseases. Those with protective genes had longer telomeres than people with progeroid syndromes. This study challenges assumptions about aging in rare disorders and highlights the need for more personalized approaches in aging research. By identifying which syndromes involve telomere attrition, it opens new avenues for treating or delaying aging-related symptoms. Future research may explore other biological factors behind premature aging and how genetic differences influence the aging process. We get it. It's tempting to ask the people closest to us (and sometimes strangers on the internet) what we should do… for every single decision we have to make. But is this really what's best for us?On this week's episode, we're discussing the drawbacks of outsourcing our power to other people. Why do we trust everyone else on the planet more than we trust ourselves? How can we learn to listen to our own intuition, sort through advice from other people, and take actions that move us towards the life we desire? The truth is that other people are only able to tell you how they see it. Their perspective is clouded by their own life experiences and circumstances, and those oftentimes don't align with our own. If you're looking to stop wasting time asking other people for advice and are ready to start taking action moving towards the one you desire, press play. Our perspective may be just the thing you need to get started.Takeaways:The societal norm encourages seeking validation from others.Listening to oneself is often overlooked in favor of external advice. The cost of ignoring self-trust can be significant.Quiet reflection is necessary to hear our inner voice.Pleasing everyone is impossible and can lead to dissatisfaction.Trusting ourselves can enhance our relationships with others.Self-trust is a lifelong journey that can start at any moment.Chapters:11:00 Navigating External Advice vs. Internal Wisdom21:40 Building Trust in Ourselves23:05 A Pivotal Moment: Learning to Trust Yourself31:06 Navigating Health and Self-Care34:03 The Importance of Quiet and Reflection37:17 Shortening the Gap Between Knowing and DoingLove,Meg & MaggiFollow us:InstagramTikTokFacebookYoutube [self-trust, personal growth, decision making, advice, inner voice, self-awareness, mental health, Glennon Doyle, Untamed, personal development]Music curtesy of LiQWYD

What to Do When Scrum Meetings Go Wrong - Mike Cohn I hate getting stuck in traffic. I grew up in Los Angeles and lived in New York, so I should probably be used to it. I'm not.As frustrating as I find traffic, I've never gotten angry at the lines on the highway. The lines on the highway are there to help me and the other drivers go faster than we could without them. They tell us which direction we can go, where to position our cars, when it's safe to change lanes or turn, and more. The meetings of Scrum are like those lines on the road—there to help us go fast. All too often, though, Scrum can feel bloated because teams allow the meetings to take too long.A good way to prevent this is by keeping each meeting focused on its purpose. One meeting that often seems to stray from its purpose is sprint planning. Let's look at some ways you can keep that meeting moving in the right direction, starting with a refresher on the purpose.Purpose of sprint planning: To establish the sprint goal and choose the relevant product backlog items the team will tackle. As part of choosing the product backlog items for a sprint, team members typically discuss the tasks required to complete the product backlog item. Often these tasks are given estimates (in terms of hours). The result is captured in the sprint backlog. When things go wrong: While these discussions are helpful, they should last only long enough to help choose the appropriate work. If, on the other hand, team members get hung up in lengthy debates over which approach to use or how long each task will take, the meeting can quickly get out of hand. How to fix it: To bring the team back to the purpose of the meeting, remind them that you only have to decide if the item will fit in the sprint, not agree completely on how to approach it, or precisely how much time each task will take.Remind them that you can discuss implementation details at the beginning of the sprint. Offer to set up time with the relevant team members after sprint planning to dive into implementation specifics. For more on what to do when teams complain that Scrum has too many meetings, check out the blog "Do Scrum Teams Meet Too Much."Scrum Meetings Shouldn't Be a BurdenThe meetings of Scrum should not be a burden. Rather they are like the lines on a highway: there to help a team move more quickly. If it feels like the meetings are slowing your team down, try making the changes I've described.Shortening meetings while still achieving the purpose of each will help you succeed with agile.
