What if the reason a visual schedule "isn't working"… isn't because the child can't use visuals. What if the real issue is that one small piece of the system needs adjusting? In this episode, we walk through the most common reasons visual schedules fall apart in classrooms and therapy spaces. From schedule length to symbol clarity to how the schedule is introduced, small adjustments can make a big difference. Instead of abandoning visual schedules altogether, this episode offers a troubleshooting lens. Because when the schedule fits the child's developmental level and nervous system capacity, it becomes a powerful support for transitions, predictability, and independence. In This Episode, You'll Learn • Why children sometimes treat visual schedules like choice boards • How highlighting the "now" activity can reduce confusion and meltdowns • When a schedule may simply be too long for a child's current processing capacity • How to recognize when symbols aren't meaningful yet • Why real photos or functional objects can sometimes work better than clipart • The role of matching symbols to locations to strengthen comprehension • How schedule delivery (bringing the picture vs. walking to the schedule) can change engagement • Why modeling the schedule matters more than quizzing children about it • How nervous system load and transition stress affect how schedules are received • Why visual schedules should be adjusted, not abandoned, when they aren't working Key Takeaways • When a visual schedule isn't working, it's usually a mismatch in design — not a child's inability to use visuals • Grabbing future icons often means a child doesn't yet understand sequence • Shortening a schedule can build comprehension and reduce overwhelm • Symbols must connect to real experiences in order to be meaningful • Matching symbols to destinations helps children understand what visuals represent • The way a schedule is delivered can either reduce or increase transition stress • Visual schedules are environmental supports, not comprehension tests • Adjusting one variable at a time allows you to see what actually helps Small refinements can transform a schedule from something children ignore… into something they rely on. Try This • If a child grabs future icons, highlight the "now" activity with a visual anchor or shorten the schedule • If a child ignores the schedule, try moving to less abstract symbols such as real photos or functional objects • Add matching symbols at activity locations so children can connect the picture to the destination • Experiment with bringing the "next" picture to the child instead of requiring them to walk to the schedule • Model the schedule calmly instead of asking comprehension questions • If transitions feel tense, pause and consider the child's regulation and overall load Sometimes the smallest adjustment can completely change how a visual schedule works. In this first part of a two-part series, Jeff and Luca explore how different types of service-oriented engineering organizations should focus their learning and improvement efforts. Drawing from their consulting experience, they examine three distinct categories: product development firms that turn client ideas into reality, engineering development firms that sell specialized technical expertise, and solo engineers who package all necessary knowledge into one person. The core insight: what you should focus on learning depends entirely on what you're actually selling. Product development firms need to master the entire client journey and product design process, not just engineering excellence. Engineering development firms must become technical wizards in a specific domain that clients actually value. Solo engineers face the challenge of needing deep expertise while wearing every business hat. Across all three types, the common traps are the same: focusing too much on craft and too little on client experience, failing to specialize, and not investing enough in teaching as marketing.Throughout the discussion, Jeff and Luca emphasize that for service firms, you are the product - and that changes everything about where you should direct your improvement efforts. The conversation is grounded in real experiences, including some cautionary tales about firms that tried to be everything to everyone.Key Topics[00:00] Introduction: Two-part series on engineering organizations and their different focuses[02:30] Overview of the framework: Service firms vs. product-building companies[05:15] Product development firms: Why engineering excellence isn't enough[08:45] The critical importance of product design and client guidance over pure engineering[12:20] Process-level learning: Shortening cycle times and enabling rapid prototyping[15:40] The Irinos example: In-house board manufacturing to tighten feedback loops[18:30] Requirements will always change - designing for learning, not perfection[21:00] The danger of being a generalist: Why specialization matters for service firms[24:15] Engineering development firms: Selling technical expertise, not complete products[27:45] Technology-focused learning: Going deep on specific technical capabilities[30:20] The trap of becoming a commodity: Why domain expertise beats technology alone[33:40] The forklift invoice review example: You can't specialize too narrowly[35:30] Solo engineers: The complete package vs. temporary employee trap[39:00] Common failures across all service firms: Too much craft focus, too little client experience and marketing[41:30] Teaching as the best form of marketing for technical service firmsNotable Quotes"The customers don't actually hire them for their engineering skills. They are sort of a given. But what such a product development firm should offer the client is guiding them through the development process, which they don't have enough skills for to do it on their own." — Luca"Engineering is not the point. The unit of work is delivering a working product to the client that satisfies their business case, that has a reasonable cost to manufacture, and that you feel confident your own client has validated their market." — Jeff"It's not that engineering is irrelevant, but rather that it's table stakes. This is just taken for granted, but what such a product development firm should offer is guiding them through the development process." — Luca"You almost can't be narrow enough. I remember our friend Philip Morgan having this example of a company that specializes in reviewing invoices of forklift repairs. This is what they do. They review forklift repair invoices. And they're doing very well apparently." — Luca"Teaching and giving information and solving problems publicly is the best form of marketing. It's not advertising. It's building trust with an audience." — JeffResources MentionedIDEO - Prototypical design firm mentioned as an example of companies specializing in product designIRNAS - Product development firm with in-house board manufacturing capabilities, featured in previous episodes, exemplifying tight feedback loopsPhilip Morgan - Consultant and friend mentioned for his example about specialization (forklift invoice review company)Jeff Gable's website - Jeff's consulting services for medical device software development and advisoryLuca Ingianni's website - Luca's training products and resources for embedded systems, IoT, and AIConnect With UsStay tuned for Part 2, where we'll explore organizations that build products and what they should focus on when the market decidesIf you're in the medical device industry and need help with embedded software - either writing it or navigating the regulatory landscape - reach out to Jeff at jeffgable.comCheck out Luca's training products for embedded systems, IoT, and AI at luca.engineerReflect on your own organization: Are you focusing on the right things for the type of service firm you are? In this episode, I'm walking you through why great podcast editing doesn't start with software, plugins, or secret shortcuts — it starts with knowing your audience. Once you're crystal clear on who you're talking to and what they value, editing becomes a lot easier: you simply remove anything that wastes their time or doesn't deliver value.Editing For ContentI'll share examples from real interviews (including Amy Poehler's “Good Hang” and conversations with my friends Daniel J. Lewis and Katie Krimitsos) to show how to tighten up questions, trim rambling answers, and keep the pace moving so your listeners stay engaged from start to finish. If you've ever listened back to your show and thought, “It's fine…but something feels off,” this one's for you.---Where To start?Editing starts with your audience, not your software Why the first question is, “Who am I talking to and what do they want?” How knowing your audience's problems, language, and attention span guides every cut. The “vegetarian at dinner” analogy: if you know who's coming, you know what not to serve.Did they actually answer the question?Using Amy Poehler's friend and Jennifer Lawrence as an example of a non-answer answer. How to spot when guests talk *around* a question instead of answering it.When to follow up, when to re-ask more simply, and when to just fix it in the edit.Cut the fluff, keep the valueTrimming long-winded questions where the host gives too much backstory.Shortening guest answers that wander, repeat, or add no value to the listener. Why you don't need to include your guest “thinking out loud” to get to the point.Friends, comfort, and wasted timeHow being comfortable with guests (friends, colleagues) can lead to bloated conversations. Why “fun to say” isn't the same as “valuable to hear” for your audience. The discipline of deleting entire questions and answers that just don't land.Content editing vs. cosmetic editing Why removing bad questions is more powerful than removing ums and uhs. When it makes sense to leave in human imperfections for a natural feel. The mindset shift from “How do I make this cleaner?” to “How do I make this stronger?”Basic audio cleanup that actually matters A practical order of operations: repair first, then shape the sound. Do the many clinical trials into high-dose vitamin C prove it can actually treat the common cold and cancer, rather than just boost the immune system? Why is there ongoing scepticism? Why are multifactorial chronic diseases so hard to study in clinical trials? What is the right dosage to get the best results from vitamin C?In this episode we have the often misunderstood topic of Vitamin C as an antioxidant to get clear on, particular the high-dose approach and particularly delivered intravenously. Despite a very clear consensus that Vitamin C is a great booster to immune function, research that shows that it helps fight the common cold or flu have been dismissed by doctors and medical researchers; as well as claims that higher doses can increase its efficacy. Other claims that Vitamin C can help fight cardio-vascular disease and even cancer have been with even greater scepticism. So what exactly can vitamin C do to assist our immune function to fight disease, and why is there so much confusion about the answer given the high quantity of clinical trials data?Fortunately today's guest has exactly the right skill set and research knowledge to separate the science from the here-say, medical doctor and orthomolecular medicine researcher, Dr. Richard Z Cheng. Dr. Cheng has a PhD in biochemistry and molecular biology; he's served as a doctor in the US military; he has consulted for the National Cancer Institute, and presented at the National Institute of Health (NIH); he has conducted clinical trials; He is the editor in Chief of the Orthmolecular Medicine New Service; He is also a fellow of the American Academy of Anti- Aging medicine; and has run anti-aging and regenerative medicine clinics in both China and the US for over 20 years. What we discuss:00:00 Intro05:15 Most animals produce Vitamin C in the body, but not primates.06:00 Oxidation & Redox: Giving or receiving an electron.11:00 After reducing oxidation the body recycles it back into vitamin C.14:00 Teamwork: sharing electrons between nutrients and vitamins.18:20 Conventional consensus: good for prevention but not treatment.21:00 Over 80K papers on Vit C on Pub Med!21:30 Linus Pauling Intravenous Vitamin C for cancer and heart disease.27:00 Shortening of common cold and lowering of symptoms - Harri Hemila.29:00 Low dose studies dilute the data on the efficacy of the high dose studies.31:00 Intravenous treatment allows much higher doses safely.33:00 Differences in absorption between IV and oral application.35:20 Pro-oxidant effect only possible at IV high dose.36:30 IV clinical trials.39:20 Cytokine storm cascades in acute respiratory distress.44:00 High Dose IV Vitamin C saved lives in China during Covid 19.50:00 Attacks following Richard's NIH presentation on Vitamin C during covid.57:00 Cardio vascular disease - Vit. BUFFALO, NY — October 27, 2025 — A new #research paper was #published in Volume 17, Issue 9 of Aging-US on September 17, 2025, titled “Depletion of the TRF1 telomere-binding protein leads to leaner mice with altered metabolic profiles.” In this study led by first author Jessica Louzame Ruano and corresponding author Maria A. Blasco from the Spanish National Cancer Centre (CNIO), researchers investigated the role of TRF1, a protein known for protecting telomeres, in regulating whole-body metabolism. The results suggest that TRF1 influences metabolic health through mechanisms unrelated to its known function in telomere maintenance. Obesity and metabolic disorders are major health concerns, especially as people age. To explore TRF1's role beyond telomere protection, the research team studied both normal mice and genetically modified mice that lacked TRF1. Mice without TRF1 remained leaner over time, resisted fat accumulation, and showed healthier blood sugar and insulin levels compared to normal mice. Importantly, these benefits occurred without any detectable shortening of telomeres. The leaner body composition in TRF1-deficient mice was not due to reduced food intake or increased physical activity. Instead, the fat loss appeared to result from biological changes in how energy was processed and stored. Male mice without TRF1 gained less weight and had lower LDL cholesterol levels, even on a high-fat diet. Female mice showed milder effects, reflecting known sex-based differences in susceptibility to diet-induced obesity. This highlights the importance of including both sexes in metabolic research. “Major metabolic pathways related with energy production and regulation of metabolism homeostasis were also found downregulated in Trf1-deficient mice.” Gene expression analysis in the liver revealed shifts in several key pathways. Genes related to fat production, energy generation, and muscle growth were downregulated, while genes linked to inflammation and cholesterol synthesis were upregulated. The mice also showed signs of higher energy expenditure and a shift from using fat to protein as an energy source, possibly due to their reduced fat reserves. However, some older mice developed mild liver stress, including fibrosis and DNA damage, suggesting a possible long-term trade-off. Overall, this study expands the understanding of how telomere-related proteins influence more than just cellular aging. By identifying a connection between TRF1 and metabolism, the research opens new possibilities for targeting TRF1 or its pathways to address obesity and related conditions. Still, further studies are needed to clarify how TRF1 affects fat development and whether similar effects occur in humans. DOI - https://doi.org/10.18632/aging.206320 Corresponding author - Maria A. Farmers have shortened up crop rotation for a number of reasons. Oilseed agronomy research scientist Patrick Molecki is with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada at the Saskatoon Research and Development Centre. But there is new work showing this impact can be offset by planting trees. Off The Bench is back weekdays from 10a to 11a followed by The Stone Shields Show from 11a to noon! In a game that started as a nightmare and ended in futile desperation, the Cincinnati Bengals fell 37-24 to the Detroit Lions on October 5, 2025, at Paycor Stadium, extending their skid to three straight defeats. What began as a 28-3 halftime rout—fueled by Detroit's explosive backfield duo of Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery tying an NFL record with their 14th combined touchdown—devolved into a fourth-quarter mirage for Bengals fans. Cincinnati, now 2-3, has been outscored 113-37 over this brutal stretch, a stark reminder of life without injured star Joe Burrow. Quarterback Jake Browning, filling in admirably during a 2023 late-season surge, looked utterly lost under center. He threw three interceptions—two deep in Bengals territory that gifted Detroit short-field touchdowns—before salvaging his stat line with 251 yards and three fourth-quarter scores to Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Those late strikes, including a 65-yard bomb to Chase, trimmed the deficit to 35-24 and sparked brief "Stripe the Jungle" chants amid boos that rained down after his third pick. But it was too little, too late; a failed onside kick and safety sealed the embarrassment. Browning now ranks second in the NFL with eight picks, his adjusted EPA per dropback a woeful -0.44, dead last among qualifiers. Head coach Zac Taylor shouldered blame for the slow starts but doubled down on faith in Browning, saying, "I believe Jake can win games for us." Yet, postgame whispers of accountability rang hollow: Taylor admitted hearing bench calls from the crowd, while Browning owned his "awful" play, deferring any changes to the staff. The leash? Shortening fast. With Burrow sidelined until at least December from toe surgery, rumors swirl of an upgrade. Analysts urge trading for a veteran like Russell Wilson or the benched Kirk Cousins to stem the bleeding—Brett Rypien, the roster's only other QB, boasts a 4-9 TD-INT ratio in limited action. Facing Green Bay next, then primetime tilts against the Jets and Steelers, Cincinnati's 2-3 perch in a wobbly AFC North (Ravens and Browns at 1-4) offers a lifeline. But sticking with Browning risks irrelevance; the front office must act, or this season crumbles before Burrow's return. The Bengals' Super Bowl window creaks open—don't slam it shut with indecision. Extending our healthy years isn't just about eating well and exercising — it's also about the systems around us. Social policies, public health programs, and access to care all play a huge role in how long and how well we live. In this episode, we look at what it takes to improve health for everyone, everywhere. We each have personal choices to make, but what about the bigger picture?Dr. Tyler Evans is a physician, infectious disease specialist, and author of Pandemics, Poverty and Politics: Decoding the Social and Political Drivers of Pandemics from Plague to Covid-19.In a wide-ranging conversation with Peter Bowes, Dr. Evans connects stalled life expectancy to weakened safety nets, unequal access to healthcare, and the cracks exposed by recent global crises. He emphasizes practical action — meeting people where they are, funding prevention, and rebuilding systems that can spot and stop health threats early. Drawing on his experience from Los Angeles's Skid Row to global epidemic response, Evans calls for a non-partisan, evidence-driven approach that focuses on those most at risk — because when the most vulnerable communities thrive, everyone benefits.----This podcast is supported by affiliate arrangements with a select number of companies. For decades, nuclear has struggled with cost overruns and delays — Georgia's Vogtle plant being the latest example. Kairos Power co-founder and CEO Mike Laufer thinks the solution is to flip the script: focus first on non-nuclear demonstrations and then iterate quickly. It's a counterintuitive and potentially risky strategy . Rapid iteration isn't the way engineers or funders like the DOE have traditionally developed nuclear plants. Kairos also combined two technologies — TRISO fuel and molten salt — into a first-of-a-kind design. Theoretically it would be safer, but Kairos was also tackling one of the hardest problems in engineering: building a reactor from scratch. After eight years of development, its approach has led to three engineering test units, a novel contracting model with the Department of Energy, and a landmark partnership with TVA and Google to deliver nuclear power to data centers. So how did Kairos pull it off? In this episode, Lara talked with Mike about how Kairos executed its ambitious iterative approach without overextending itself. They also cover why Kairos chose to vertically integrate and build its own in-house machine shop, plus what technical setbacks taught the team. Credits: Hosted by Lara Pierpoint. When it comes to medical science, there's never been a better time to be alive than now… other than maybe a few months ago before the new Trump administration. Americans today are living longer than ever before, and that's owed in no small part to the National Institutes of Health—a government organization that has been responsible for some of the most significant biomedical advancements in the history of healthcare. Unfortunately, the Trump administration just virtually annihilated the NIH, and sentient gob of clay and anti-vax charlatan RFK Jr. is now in charge of the future of American health. To figure how how to navigate this insane dichotomy of medical potential and squandered medical possibility, Adam speaks with Dr. Eric Topol, a cardiologist and scientist, and director of the Scripps Research Translational Institute. Dr. Topol's book, Super Agers: An Evidence-Based Approach to Longevity, explores the cutting edge advancements in living longer, healthier lives—advancements which are now in jeopardy.
