The Yellow Clearance Black Box Blues is a 48-page adventure for the Paranoia RPG. It was written by John M. Ford, published by West End Games in 1985, and is generally regarded as one of the classic adventures for the game, and a milestone in the development of comedy in RPGs. It was re-released in 2017 for the rebooted edition of Paranoia that was co-designed by James Wallis, Grant Howitt and Paul Dean, and I swear that's the first I've ever heard of that version, though it seems to be the only form in which TYCBBB is commercially available right now. $29.99 for a 48-page PDF from 1985. Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah, Book-Heads! This week John and Ben are joined deep in the stacks by Eden of Death//Sentence, Heavy Blog is Heavy, and AnarchySF to discuss the "Velvet Underground of 80s Fantasy Novels": "The Dragon Waiting" by John M. Ford. Topics of conversation include the wild and wooly figure of John M. Ford himself, the curious nature of the Alternate History genre, and what can happen when a work of fantasy tries to do "too much". Eden is also kind enough to provide a true smorgasbord of recommendations for the starving Infinite Library public. Semper Books! We'll see you next year!

Sara notes that nearly every time she sits down to read a RivkaT story, she learns something-- new vocabulary, a joke she hadn’t picked up on the first time, a new way of looking through a character’s eyes-- her writing is immersive, intelligent, incredibly thoughtful-- and fun! And even when utilizing overtly silly or overused tropes and clichés, nothing is cheaply handled. She is one of the best of the very best, not just in the Smallville fandom, but in the pantheon of authors held in highest regard. It's time once again to take a look at spinoff novelizations, and this time we're joined by Trekspert Dylan Roth to look at the era before the movies, before the Next Generation, when Star Trek was a ragtag multimedia conglomeration held together by fan obsession. The franchise took all kinds of strange and non-canonical turns in those dark days, and one of the biggest ones was The Final Reflection, a novel by celebrated SF author John M. Ford that paints a very different view of Star Trek and particularly the Klingon empire, one that diverged from the eventual path Trek took but nevertheless provided a guiding light for years afterwards. As the Vulcans say, Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations... This is an edited version of a much longer show, available for Patreon subscribers. We're talking about the Star Trek tie-ins of our formative years -- the ones we read until they fell apart. And it doesn't quite turn into a Diane Duane book club, but...  Well. Novels we discuss in detail:  The Romulan Way by Diane Duane How Much For Just The Planet? by John M. Ford Survivors by Jean Lorrah The Pandora Principle by Carolyn Clowes The Devil's Heart by Carmen Carter Dark Mirror by Diane Duane (coming full circle!) You don't need to be familiar with these novels to listen to the podcast! How Much For Just The Planet is a classic, but it's also out of print, and retailing for a couple of hundred dollars on Amazon Marketplace -- or, as it turns out, just a couple of bucks on eBay. (Treat yourself. It's amazing.) We also talk about the different needs filled by tie-in novels versus fan fiction, and why more recent Star Trek fiction just isn't doing it for us.

The Final Reflection. The Klingons: No other species in Star Trek has gone through so many changes over the years as this race of warriors. In 1984, author John M. Ford set out to write the definitive book about Klingon society, and while Trek canon has gone in a completely different direction since, The Final Reflection still strikes a chord with many Trek fans with its close examination of an alien culture that is the antithesis of the Federation. In this episode of Literary Treks, hosts Dan Gunther and Bruce Gibson discuss The Final Reflection. We talk about a truly alien culture, the differences between the Klingons in The Final Reflection and Trek canon since, the Perpetual Game, the Federation's duplicity, the novel within the novel, the inspiration that The Final Reflection provided to the creators of Star Trek: Discovery, and wrap up with our final thoughts and ratings. The Making of the FASA Role Playing Game. The story of Axanar was born of the role-playing game published by the FASA Corporation between 1982 and 1989. Many elements of the game have influenced later Star Trek, particularly John M. Ford’s supplement, The Klingons, published in 1983. But it was 1986’s Four Years War sourcebook and its companion campaign module “Return to Axanar” that would plant the seeds for the story of Prelude to Axanar and the film yet to come. Is that material canon? To some it is, to others it is not. But it was licensed, and the amount of research that went into crafting it is incredible. In this episode of the official Axanar podcast, hosts Robert Meyer Burnett and Alec Peters are joined by two of the creators: John Theisen and Stephen Fender. John is the original author of the FASA Four Years War supplement, and Stephen penned the four-part novel series.
