Jeff and Jenna are invited to MSU's Campus to learn about healing in the form of art and activism, “artivism”. They are joined by Scott Boehm, Assistant Professor of 20th/21st Spanish Culture and the Founder/Director of the MSU Latinx Film Festival. He is a Core Faculty member of the Global Studies in the Arts & Humanities Program, as well as an Affiliated Faculty member of the Film Studies Program. Dr. Boehm, currently working on a four-part documentary series highlighting the mass shooting that took place at MSU, is joined by his colleague John McKenna, Country Director (USA) for the Non-Violence Project (NVP), who works to inspire, motivate and engage people to manage and prevent conflicts without ever resorting to violence. With an educational focus based on both prevention, intervention and on measures that address root issues rather than punish behaviors or feed the blame. Together we discuss the Soul Box Project at MSU's Broad Art Museum in recognition, remembrance , and healing after the shooting that took place at MSU two years ago.

'Leonard Cohen taught us that even in the midst of darkness there is light, in the midst of hatred there is love, with our dying breath we can still sing Hallelujah.' - The late Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks'Among the finest volumes on Cohen's life and lyrics ... An exploration which would have intrigued and engaged Leonard himself.' - John McKenna, writer and friend of Leonard CohenHarry Freedman uncovers the spiritual traditions that lie behind Leonard Cohen's profound and unmistakable lyricsThe singer and poet Leonard Cohen was deeply learned in Judaism and Christianity, the spiritual traditions that underpinned his self-identity and the way he made sense of the world. In this book Harry Freedman, a leading author of cultural and religious history, explores the mystical and spiritual sources Cohen drew upon, discusses their original context and the stories and ideas behind them.Cohen's music is studded with allusions to Jewish and Christian tradition, to stories and ideas drawn from the Bible, Talmud and Kabbalah. From his 1967 classic 'Suzanne', through masterpieces like 'Hallelujah' and 'Who by Fire', to his final challenge to the divinity, 'You Want It Darker' he drew on spirituality for inspiration and as a tool to create understanding, clarity and beauty.Born into a prominent and scholarly Jewish family in Montreal, Canada, Cohen originally aspired to become a poet, before turning to song writing and eventually recording his own compositions. Later, he became immersed in Zen Buddhism, moving in 1990 to a Zen monastery on Mount Baldy, California where he remained for some years. He died, with immaculate timing, on the day before Donald Trump was elected in 2016, leaving behind him a legacy that will be felt for generations to come.Leonard Cohen: The Mystical Roots of Genius looks deeply into the imagination of one of the greatest singers and lyricists of our time, providing a window on the landscape of his soul. Departing from traditional biographical approaches, Freedman explores song by song how Cohen reworked myths and prayers, legends and allegories. By the end the reader will be left with a powerful understanding of Cohen's story, together with a far broader insight into the mystical origins of his inimitable work.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

John McKenna, CEO of Peachtree VA, a virtual assistant staffing organization & President of The Emerald Group, a premier mortgage recruiting firm.Based here in Cleveland, John acquired Peachtree VA early in 2022 to grow their vetted virtual assistant offering in the wake of a flourishing virtual assistant industry where entrepreneurs, startups, small businesses, nonprofits, executive directors, and other business models are often stretched thin, and using a virtual assistant can gain back some of their time, reduce cost and streamline their business.John points out that engaging virtual assistants can alleviate the exhaustive hiring process for companies, citing surveys showing that traditional hiring can be 78% more expensive and exponentially higher if an employee does not work out. Research also suggests that direct replacement costs can be as high as 50% to 60% of an employee's annual salary. Then there's the price of turnover with a traditional hire, with costs ranging from 90% to 200%of their annual salary. We cover a lot in our conversation today — from the ins and outs of entrepreneurship-via-acquisition and what that looks like in practice, to the nuance of this quickly evolving virtual assistance space — how to effectively delegate, the implications of the gig economy, supplementing exhaustive and costly hiring processes, and what comes next for Peachtree VA as John continues to the grow the business from here, helping their clients focus on what matters most!-----Lay of The Land is brought to you by Ninety. John and Sally McKenna have been have been documenting the Irish food scene since before it even existed. Setting out in the 90s to explore the world of Irish artisan producers, they began publishing their perennially popular and highly respected McKenna's Guides back when the Irish food scene consisted of a few cheesemakers spread out in the country, and no notable restaurants to speak of all. The McKennas have stayed on the case as Ireland's chefs and artisans have gained confidence and become more highly regarded internationally. Throughout a changing culinary landscape, they've stayed true to their own values and love of food as something that should bring people together as opposed to a status symbol. We sat down with John and Sally recently to discuss how much Ireland has changed from when they first began documenting Irish food. We discuss Ireland's producer-led food culture, how delightful creative people who work in food are, the beauty of world-class chefs opening restaurants in their rural hometowns, as well as how operators and artisans can stay positive and adapt amid today's challenging environment of “staff shortages,” inflation, and more. Dyed Green is a project of Bog & Thunder, whose mission is to highlight the best of Irish food and culture, through food tours, events, and media. This week, we decided to revisit a classic episode from the NeighbourFood podcast archives. As you may have heard, the World Potato Congress that was recently hosted in Dublin, we felt this was a topical and fun episode and a fun look at Ireland's love affair with the humble spud. Throughout this episode we have with lots of contributors who tell us why this is. We speak to food writer John McKenna of McKenna's Guides about Ireland's romantic connection to the food that let us down in our past and yet how we return time and time again, like a faithless lover to the spud we love so well. Did you know the process of flavouring crisps was invented here in Ireland? That's right and Tayto Crisps are responsible for the world-famous cheese and onion flavour! We tracked down Peter Murphy, son of Joe “Spud” Murphy, the founder of Tayto who told us about his entrepreneurial dad, his Peter Pan existence and that Ah-Ha moment when they stumbled across the much-loved Cheese and Onion flavour combination. There are small farmers throughout the country growing potatoes for their local market. We speak to Maria Flynn of Ballymackenny Farm Potatoes who taking over the family farm, realised they were never going to survive on glowing Roosters and Queens alone. So they took a chance on growing heritage and heirloom speciality potatoes and targeting chefs with their more unusual produce. When the pandemic hit, they lost 100% of their customers overnight, so we hear their story of survival. Now, do you think it's possible to live on Potatoes alone? We find a man in India who claims to do just that. The Aloo Baba lives in the mountains in Pushkar, India and eats 10kg potatoes a day!!!! That's some feat, but he claims it keeps him young and gives him clarity. Vikrant Naidu, chef at The Lodge, Myrtleville, Cork steps in to translate and also gives us an insight into the culture of potatoes in his home county of India. And finally, potatoes are far more than a carbohydrate on our plate, they also make an interesting ingredient in spirits, such as Poitin. Michael O'Boyle of Baoilleach Distillery in Donegal explains why spuds were sometimes used in the mashbill of poitín makers back in the day and when he chooses to continue this tradition in his own poitin collection “Mulroy Bay”. Enjoy this spudcast full of poppy love. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

A U2 pilot assisted in an emergency in Feb. 8th, 2022. A civilian aircraft experienced an engine failure over Lake Berryessa and was looking for a place to land The U2 pilot relayed the mayday call to Oakland ATC, who alerted local authorities. Due to terrain, the civilian airplane was not able to be seen on radar. About 30 minutes after the mayday, the airplane was found by CHP, having safely landed in a field. https://theaviationgeekclub.com/u-2-dragon-lady-pilot-relays-radio-messages-to-civilian-pilot-in-distress-helping-him-to-find-a-safe-spot-for-emergency-landing-near-lake-berryessa/ The P2010 H3PS Hybrid aircraft made its first flight late December 2021. It is powered by a 135HP Rotor 915 coupled with a 30kW Rolls-Royce electric motor. The test was designed to show that this hybrid configuration can bear the same useful load as a 180HP combustion engine. Nevertheless, after sometimes long and unavoidable periods of separation from my loved ones during the pandemic, it is time to devote my full time and attention to them. A fun look at Ireland's love affair with the humble spud with lots of contributors who tell us why!We speak to food writer John McKenna about Ireland's romantic connection to the food that let us down in our past and yet how we return time and time again like a faithless lover to the spud we love so well. Did you know the process of flavouring crisps was invented here in Ireland? That's right and Tayto Crisps are responsible for the world famous cheese and onion flavour! We tracked down Peter Murphy, son of Joe “Spud” Murphy, the founder of Tayto who told us about his entrepreneurial dad, his Peter Pan existence and that Ah-Ha moment they stumbled across the much loved Cheese and Onion flavour combination. There are small farmers throughout the country growing potatoes for their local market and we speak to Maria Flynn of Ballymackenny Farm Potatoes. After taking over the family farm, they realised they were never going to survive on glowing Roosters and Queens alone, so they took a chance on growing heritage and heirloom speciality potatoes and targeting chefs with their produce. When the pandemic hit, they lost 100% of their customers overnight, so we hear their story of survival. Now do you think it's possible to live on Potatoes alone? We find a man in India who claims to do just that. The Aloo Baba lives in the mountains in Pushkar, India and eats 10 - 12 potatoes a day!!!! That's some feat, but he claims it keeps him young and gives him clarity. Vikrant Naidu, chef at The Lodge, Myrtleville, Cork steps in to translate and also gives us an insight into the culture of potatoes in his home country of India. And finally, potatoes are far more than a carbohydrate on our plate, they also make an interesting ingredient in spirits, such as poitín. Michael O'Boyle of Baoilleach Distillery in Donegal explains why spuds were sometimes used in the mash bill of poitín makers back in the day and why he chooses to continue this tradition in his own “Mulroy Bay” poitín collection. We hope you enjoy this spudcast full of poppy love.
