On this edition of DMOU, we settle in with John Sage of Sage Inclusion. We met John at the Destinations International Annual Convention and were fascinated by his take on what destinations and DMOs get right (and wrong) about travelers with disabilities, a market cohort that is only growing with an aging population. In our conversation, John demystifies ways that DMOs can play a pivotal role in making their destinations more accessible. Join us.

Mark and John discuss how the travel industry can better serve the accessibility market, what options are available to DMOs who might not know where to begin, and current opportunities in accessibility marketing. John is one of the few people in the travel industry to hold the Accessibility Certification from the International Association of Accessibility Professionals. He is CEO of Accessible Travel Solutions.
This episode features John Sage, president at Accessible Travel Solutions. The conversation focuses on the accessibility of in-person events. Here are a few of the topics we cover: The dangers of making accessibility a check-box exercise Events should be responsible for ensuring accessibility is taken into account, not the attendees The importance of training and customer service Why it is important to remember than many people with disabilities do not self-identify this way The four components of accessibility information and the three pillars of accessibility
This week we're focusing on accessible travel. In a recent two-part cover story series, our staff looked at ways that travel companies and categories like hotel, cruise and tour have made strides to accommodate disabled travelers. And we're continuing the coverage this week with a report by Robert Silk about how often flyers who need wheelchair assistance receive “prompt and timely assistance” at the gate. In the meantime, in this episode we're having a robust discussion about what accessible travel means, what needs to be done for disabled travelers in tours and hotels, and where more progress needs to occur to make disabled travelers feel welcome and able to participate in group travel. Host Rebecca Tobin and Travel Weekly news editor Johanna Jainchill leads the discussion with John Sage, the founder of accessible-travel tour operator and agency Sage Traveling; Genny Freiman, the project manager for the Disability Opportunity Fund, which designed a hotel from top to bottom with disabled travelers in mind; and Matt Berna, president, North America, for Intrepid Travel. In our last episode, before our Season one finale at episode 10, we delve into the history and ghost stories that make Chillingham Castle a prime candidate for the most haunted location in the UK. So much history has been played out in this building and it's surrounding grounds. So many famous people have lived and died here, but there are undertones of a much darker existence, with the likes of John Sage imprinting his terrifying presence here hundreds of years ago. Described by many witnesses, as well as the current owners, as the most haunted castle in the United Kingdom, Chillingham Castle has a formidable reputation as a sight where a huge amount of paranormal events have occurred. Many television shows have been filmed there including Most Haunted, Scariest Places On Earth and Ghost Hunters International, with all of these programmes displaying highly impressive results. If you've had experience or sighting at Chillingham Castle or, for that matter, anywhere in the world, then please email the show at hauntedukpodcast@hotmail.com with full details of your encounter and I will try my best to read out as many listener stories as possible in dedicated listener episodes. I would genuinely love to to hear from you, so please, get in touch. Last of all, if you have a Podcast that you need mixing, or if you need original music writing for your podcast, then please get in touch via email to pinkflamingo.musicproductions@hotmail.com. This Podcast was recorded at Pink Flamingo Music Productions Studio in Halesowen in the West Midlands, England. Tonight, we head to Alnwick, England. At Alnwick Castle you can visit the Poisonous Gardens planted by Jane Percy. Or the multi-tree house that is a restaurant or get lost in the bamboo labyrinth. And after a lovely day, you can attempt to get some sleep at the exceptionally haunted Chillingham Castle. And "chilling" is just the beginning. This castle was the site where the ruthless bastard John Sage slaughtered thousands of Scottish prisoners of war. The man even axed children to death here! In short, this place is soaked in blood!
Lace up your hiking boots, roll up your sleeping bag and get ready for a little summer lovin’ because Juli is taking us on an adventure to Pine Glenn Close–erm–Cove. This nunnery turned summer camp has a history of heartache (and we're not just talking about that one time your crush sat next to someone ELSE by the fire pit). Next, Maggie transports us back in time to Chillingham Castle in the 13th century where John Sage tortured over 7,500 people. Now, the castle is bursting at the seams with disgruntled ghosts and people are still finding human remains. Name ONE thing that’s "chill" about that. We’ll wait.

Every crime has a victim who should not be forgotten, ignored or disrespected. Understanding the plight of victims is an important component to true rehabilitation. Tonight we discuss victim awareness and restorative justice with John Sage of Bridges to Life. The mission of Bridges To Life (BTL) is to connect communities to prisons in an effort to reduce the recidivism rate (particularly that resulting from violent crimes), reduce the number of crime victims, and enhance public safety. The spiritual mission of Bridges To Life is to minister to victims and offenders in an effort to show them the transforming power of God’s love and forgiveness.Bridges To Life was founded in 1998 by Houstonian John Sage after the brutal murder of his sister, Marilyn, in 1993. His sister’s killers were tried, convicted, and sentenced to death. John began to realize the terrible toll his sister’s murder had taken on his life, the lives of everyone else in his family, Marilyn’s friend,s and the community. After reflection, prayer, and time, John was able to forgive his sister’s murderers; and he realized that he had a place in his heart for all offenders. This life-changing experience inspired John to develop a rehabilitation program to take crime victims into the prison to work directly with offenders. http://www.bridgestolife.org
