Looking for a Sign

Scribes and Pharisees Seeking a Sign The scribes and Pharisees asked Jesus for a sign to prove who He was. Their intent was not to confirm faith but to find something to condemn Him for. They wanted to tempt or trap Him. The Nature of Seeking Signs Seeking signs is human nature. Examples: Gideon sought confirmation from God, and God honored his request. Gideon asked for a wet fleece with dry ground, then a dry fleece with wet ground. If the motivation is to increase faith, God will provide a sign. Signs can be tokens or indications to obey, pay attention, or learn. Some seek signs not to believe but to avoid dealing with something in their hearts. Abundance of Existing Signs Many signs had already been given in the preceding 11 chapters of Matthew. Jesus had already done much to prove He was God. If the motivation is disbelief, no additional signs will be given. The desire should be to know Christ and be saved. Evil and Adulterous Generation Jesus called them an evil and adulterous generation for seeking a sign. These were the same people who would crucify Christ. They wanted something new, but there is nothing new in the Word of God. The Word of God is a sign for all. Seeking a sign to justify disbelief is an evil and adulterous thought pattern. Signs They Rejected The preaching of John the Baptist: John preached repentance and the coming Messiah. He identified Jesus as the Lamb of God. They went to hear John but did not receive the sign. Testimonies of those healed by Christ: The blind man testified that he was healed by Jesus, regardless of whether Jesus was a sinner. Testimonies of God’s people are a sign to the world. The Word of Christ Himself: God spoke to the heart, revealing Himself. The greatest sign is when the Holy Ghost speaks to the heart. Jesus preached the Sermon on the Mount and taught in the temple. Refusing to hear Jesus means one will never be saved. Evil and Adulterous Hearts Seeking something different indicates evil in the heart. Looking for something other than what God has given is adulterous. It means wanting a different God or something else entirely. The Sign of Jonah The only sign to be given would be the sign of Jonah. Jonah went into the belly of death and was delivered. Jesus would go into the heart of the earth, die for sins, and rise again. The resurrection is the greatest sign. The discomfort of the scribes and Pharisees can be imagined when they learned of the empty tomb. The guards reported an angel descending, rolling back the stone, and their falling like dead men. Proofs of Christ’s Resurrection Many people have made a profession of faith and testify that Jesus is alive. Mary recognized Jesus when He spoke her name in the garden. Jesus is on the throne of glory. Signs in Matthew’s Gospel The leper: Jesus healed a leper, cleansing him from his disease. The centurion’s servant: Jesus healed the centurion’s servant sick with palsy. The centurion demonstrated great faith. The crippled man: Four men lowered a crippled man through the roof to reach Jesus. Jesus forgave his sins and healed him, telling him to take up his bed and walk. The scribes and Pharisees murmured because they didn’t believe Jesus had the power to forgive sins. The blind man: Jesus healed a blind man, which was unprecedented. The woman with the issue of blood: She touched the hem of Jesus’ garment and was immediately healed. Jesus stopped and asked who touched Him, revealing the miracle to the crowd. Jairus’ daughter: Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead. He told them she was only sleeping, but they laughed at Him. Conviction and Belief These signs should lead to conviction and belief. Seeing these miracles should cause one to question why they don’t believe. Personal experience of being born again is a sign. God is not hiding what He has done. If the reason for seeking a sign is to confirm doubt, no more will be given. Everything already given is sufficient. The Importance of the Word and Spirit The only signs needed are from the Word of God and the Spirit of God. What matters is the Word of God and the Holy Ghost. The question is whether one wants to believe. Creation as a Sign Creation itself is a sign of God’s eternal power and Godhead. Romans 1:20 states that these things are clearly seen from the creation of the world. People are without excuse because they have this sign. The Rainbow as a Sign The rainbow is a sign of God’s covenant not to flood the earth again. Genesis 9 establishes the rainbow as a token of this covenant. It serves as a reminder of God’s promise. Conclusion The problem is not the lack of signs but the lack of belief in the signs already given. Signs include preaching, testimonies, and the Word of God. Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. The only thing needed to be saved is to believe. The invitation is to run to Jesus and respond to the signs that have been given.

Tuesday, 25 March 2025   And suddenly they cried out, saying, “What have we to do with You, Jesus, You Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?” Matthew 8:29   “And, you behold! They croaked, saying, ‘What – us and You – Jesus, Son of God. You came here to us before torment time?'” (CG).   In the previous verse, Jesus had arrived on the opposite shore of the Sea of Galilee. Upon arrival, it mentioned that He had met two men possessed by demons who were very fierce. This was so much the case that nobody could pass by their way. However, Jesus is now near them, and the demons recognize Him. This begins to be seen in Matthew's next words, which say, “And, you behold! They croaked.”   This is a new word, krazó. It is an onomatopoetic term for the raven's cry. There are various sounds a raven is noted for, such as a kraaa, a croak, short repeated shrills, knocking sounds, squeaking, and swooshing of their wings. The easiest way to describe them is a croak. As for what they croaked out, they were “saying, ‘What – us and You – Jesus, Son of God.'”   It is a Hebrew form of speaking that is found in the Old Testament, such as in David's words to some of his men –   “And says, the king, ‘What to me and to you, sons Zeruiah? If he will make light, and for Yehovah said to him, “Make light of David,” and who says, “Why done thus?”'” 1 Samuel 16:10 (CG).   The demons, therefore, are croaking out a desire to know why Jesus has come and what business He has with them. They seem surprised, but they also note that Jesus is the Son of God, thus acknowledging His deity and that He has every right to be wherever He wants at whatever time He desires.   So far in Matthew, Jesus has only been directly called the Son of God by the Traducer in Matthew 4:3 and 4:6. This is now the first time He is called this in front of others. However, chronologically, He was called this earlier, as recorded in John 1 by John the Baptist (John 1:34) and Nathanael (John 1:49).   In this same account, as recorded by Luke, Legion calls Him “Son of the Most High God” (Luke 8:28). As is clear, they understood Him to be God incarnate, not just a man who is called a son of God as occurs elsewhere in both testaments. This is all the more certain based on their next words which call out, “You came here to us before torment time?”   They use a new word, kairos, which signifies a particular time. Another common word for time in Greek is chronos, which is time that continues to move forward (think of a chronometer), whereas kairos speaks of a particular time such as a season, a set time, an opportune moment, etc.   The demons acknowledge that there is a torment time coming when the demons will be punished, and more, they understand that Jesus is the One who will mete out the punishment. This is not something a regular man will be in charge of. The words leave no doubt about their knowledge that Jesus is the incarnate Lord God.   Life application: Hebrews 2 says that God has not put the world to come in subjection to angels. Instead, He has given that authority to the Son. If Jesus were an angel (meaning a created being) then it would not be referring to Him. The same logic applies to evaluating this verse in Matthew.   God has given authority to the Son to punish both the fallen angels and the humans who fail to come to God through Him. This is seen in Matthew 25:41 –   “Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels.'”   The demons (fallen angels) in Matthew 8 have a place prepared for them, along with the devil. As the judgment of all beings is not granted to angels (meaning created beings), then it logically follows that Jesus is not an angel. However, this is the doctrine of the Jehovah's Witnesses. They claim that Jesus is the archangel Michael.   It is true that the same word in both Hebrew and Greek, which is translated as “angel,” can simply mean a messenger, and this is what both John the Baptist and Jesus are called in Malachi 3:1. But context determines the meaning and the context is that the Messenger of Malachi 3:1 is the Lord, Yehovah.   Care needs to be taken when evaluating Scripture. Be certain to take all things you are taught with a grain of salt until you have verified them yourself. The deity of Jesus Christ is key to a right relationship with God. Any gospel message that is presented, and which denies this fundamental precept, it is a false gospel. Jesus is the Lord God.   Glorious God, thank You for sending Jesus to redeem us from sin. We know that You united with humanity in the Person of Jesus, and we hail You for what You have done. May we never deny the truth that Jesus is our Lord God! Amen.

Title: The Lamb of God: John 19:34, John the Baptist, and Ash Wednesday Description: As we reflect on Ash Wednesday, a day of repentance and remembrance of our mortality, we turn to the Gospel of John, where we see the fulfillment of John the Baptist's proclamation: "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). In John 19:34, the Gospel recounts how a soldier pierced Jesus' side, and from it flowed blood and water—powerful symbols of our salvation. This moment ties directly to the purpose of Christ's sacrifice: to cleanse us from sin and restore us to God. Join us in this time of contemplation as we connect John the Baptist's witness, the meaning of Ash Wednesday, and the significance of Christ's suffering for our redemption.

Frank makes the connection to what the priest says when showing the Eucharist: “Behold the Lamb of God”, the Sacrifice of the Christ the Lamb of God for us, and the Mass as a re-presentation of the sacrifice of Christ on the Cross, dying for our sins.Christmas is the "most wonderful time of the year”: trees are trimmed, presents wrapped, and the chilly air signals the coming season of festive warmth. But did you know we're not really ready for Christmas without first observing a "little Lent?" Advent is one of the highlights of our liturgical year. Every year, at the end of the summer, I begin to yearn for colder days. Then autumn rolls around with the beautiful changing leaves, pumpkin pies, and the days seem to go by quicker and quicker (no thanks to Daylight Saving Time!). Then, just after Thanksgiving, we run right into Advent. Each year, it feels like we are sprinting to get to the holiday season and run right through Christmas and New Years. This year, though, I want to be more intentional about celebrating the joy of Advent and run an Advent Marathon, instead of my usual sprint.Notes:Read about St. John the Baptist hereLearn more about Advent hereView Eucharistic Revival ResourcesRead Ad Infinitum blog posts on Advent Follow us:The Catholic Apostolate CenterThe Center's podcast websiteInstagramFacebookApple PodcastsSpotify Fr. Thought to share? Send me a text...Ever wondered how embracing a supporting role can shape your leadership journey? Join me, Betsy Marvin, as I weave a personal narrative from my high school band days, playing the flute, to explore the profound concept of "second chair" leadership. Through the lens of John the Baptist, who perfectly embodied the essence of humility and purpose in a supporting role, we explore how true leadership often requires knowing when to lead and when to support. As we delve into the Gospel of John, discover how the introduction of Jesus paints a vivid picture of his divine purpose.  Through the compelling stories of Andrew, Philip, and Nathaniel, learn about the transformative power of acknowledging Jesus's rightful place in our lives and the unique way he calls each of us to witness life's greater things. Together, we'll explore how feeling seen and known by God can redefine our understanding of faith and leadership. To read my blog, find out more about me, or to book a speaking engagement, head to https://betsymarvin.com/For access to past podcasts and transcripts, head tohttps://betsymarvin.com/podcasts/You can follow me on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/betsyjmarvin/and Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/betsy.marvin.98

"Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" In this episode, by looking at the Scriptural meaning and themes of "the lamb," we can better understand the gravity of the words we hear every mass... but perhaps have never truly heard. These words, spoken by John the Baptist (John 1:29), are familiar to us, as Catholics. We hear them at each mass as the priest raises the consecrated bread and wine high to the Heavens. But, as John spoke these words, they would have had familiar meaning to the believers of his time, as well! What did they hear in these words that led people to immediately follow Jesus (John 1:37)? What does it mean to answer Jesus' call? John Stott wrote, “At its simplest Christ's call was ‘Follow me.' He asked men and women for their personal allegiance. He invited them to learn from him, to obey his words and to identify themselves with his cause. To follow Christ is to renounce all lesser loyalties.” In Matthew 4, Jesus' public ministry had begun. John the Baptist had been taken into custody, and, because of the growing threat, Jesus left Nazareth and settled in Capernaum. There He preached publicly a message of repentance, an acknowledgment of sin and a turning from it (v. 17). Two fishermen, Peter and Andrew (v. 18), were familiar with Jesus, since Andrew had been a disciple of John the Baptist (John 1:35–42). They'd already considered Jesus' mission and message. When Jesus said to them, “Come, follow me” (v. 19), they were prepared to immediately leave their boats, their occupation, and their livelihood—and follow Jesus. Next, Jesus called another pair of brothers, James and John, who were fishing with their father. When He called them, “immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him” (v. 22). The magnitude of their obedience is highlighted by the fact that they also left their family. While discipleship was a common concept in the Jewish culture, being a disciple of Jesus was distinct. The traditional model involved a rabbi, demonstrating his teaching of the Torah, and his disciples following his pattern.
