In Hebrews 10, believers are encouraged and exhorted to continue on in three specific things: drawing near to God, holding fast to hope, and stirring up the church. But how many of us lack confidence in doing these things? I want us to look to the cross and the words found in Hebrews 10, and to be moved in doing these things. In this full-length episode of Draw Near, we return to the mic for a heartfelt conversation on one of the most essential themes of our faith—mercy. What does it really mean to be merciful? Is mercy just forgiveness, or something more? And in a world full of division, anxiety, and wounds, how can God's mercy truly heal us and flow through us to others? Together, we explore: How Scripture and the Catechism define mercy The surprising ways we've experienced God's mercy in our lives Why mercy is essential to healing broken relationships—and how to live it Practical ways to grow in compassion, patience, and forgiveness (including with ourselves) Why mercy and truth must go hand-in-hand in today's Church and culture A powerful story about St. Francis and rebuilding the Church with love and mercy What it means to show mercy without compromising truth We also share personal stories of struggle, healing, and God's never-ending patience, including a time of wrestling with anger toward God—and how mercy transformed it. How do you draw near to the Lord? As we continue through our James sermon series, hear Pastor Michael preach out of James 4:7-10 on the importance of seeking Christ first. Be encouraged!
QUOTES FOR REFLECTION “….the one who draws near to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” ~Hebrews 11:6 “This is the center of the gospel – this is what the Garden of Gethsemane and Good Friday are all about – that God has done astonishing and costly things to draw us near.”~John Piper “When we resist God, we draw near to Satan.”~Beth Moore “Nearness to God brings likeness to God. The more you see God, the more of God will be seen in you.”~Charles Spurgeon SERMON PASSAGEHebrews 7:11-28 (ESV) 11 Now if perfection had been attainable through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people received the law), what further need would there have been for another priest to arise after the order of Melchizedek, rather than one named after the order of Aaron? 12 For when there is a change in the priesthood, there is necessarily a change in the law as well. 13 For the one of whom these things are spoken belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever served at the altar. 14 For it is evident that our Lord was descended from Judah, and in connection with that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. 15 This becomes even more evident when another priest arises in the likeness of Melchizedek, 16 who has become a priest, not on the basis of a legal requirement concerning bodily descent, but by the power of an indestructible life. 17 For it is witnessed of him, “You are a priest forever, after the order of Melchizedek.” 18 For on the one hand, a former commandment is set aside because of its weakness and uselessness 19 (for the law made nothing perfect); but on the other hand, a better hope is introduced, through which we draw near to God. 20 And it was not without an oath. For those who formerly became priests were made such without an oath, 21 but this one was made a priest with an oath by the one who said to him: “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind, ‘You are a priest forever.'” 22 This makes Jesus the guarantor of a better covenant. 23 The former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office, 24 but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. 25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them. 26 For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. 27 He has no need, like those high priests, to offer sacrifices daily, first for his own sins and then for those of the people, since he did this once for all when he offered up himself. 28 For the law appoints men in their weakness as high priests, but the word of the oath, which came later than the law, appoints a Son who has been made perfect forever.
God alone establishes how we must draw near to Him. Only fools believe they can come to God on their own terms. So consider carefully your approach to God, repent of any man-made ways, and look to Jesus who alone provides access to God.
Hebrews 10:1-25 (ESV) 1 For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. 2 Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, […] The post Let Us Draw Near (Heb 10:1-25) first appeared on Hope of Christ Church.

Jesus is the perfect fulfillment of the sacrifices and obedience that the Law and the Prophets were shadows pointing toward. We ought to draw near in full assurance of faith and encourage one another every day as we sse the Day approaching.
Is it possible to feel joy in the midst of sorrow? Can we call Holy Week happy even while meditating on the suffering of Jesus? In this short and heartfelt Holy Week reflection, Fred and Kara share a deeply personal and spiritually rich meditation on John 11—the raising of Lazarus. Together, we explore what it means for Jesus to stand before our tombs and call us by name, how we're invited into community to help “unbind” one another from the grave clothes of fear, shame, and sin, and how the resurrection is not just something we believe in—it's something we're called to live. Whether you're walking through grief, wrestling with God's timing, or just longing for renewal, this episode is a companion for your journey toward Easter joy. You'll also hear stories from our own lives, encouragement for your spiritual walk, and a Holy Week challenge to invite God into your deepest burdens. Because of the sacrifice of Jesus we can confidently draw near to God.
This week, Pastor Chris shared a powerful message about approaching the throne of God with confidence. In a world filled with overwhelming needs and countless ways to cope—whether through distraction, isolation, or even unhealthy escapes—it's easy to ignore our deeper need for grace. We often find ourselves rationalizing or justifying our mistakes instead of bringing them to God. But a central message in the book of Hebrews is this: in moments of need and repentance, we're invited to draw near to God boldly. No matter what we may believe about ourselves—or even about Him—God consistently meets us with love, grace, and mercy.

This week on Draw Near, we dive into one of the most beloved parables in all of Scripture—the Prodigal Son. But this time, we ask three questions that challenge us to look deeper: How is God's love different from the love we experience from others—or even from ourselves? What does “coming home to the Father” look like in real life? And how do we respond when grace feels... unfair? With humor, vulnerability, and heart, we reflect on the extravagant mercy of God, the wounds we carry in how we love (and fail to love), and the real-life humility it takes to return home—again and again. Whether you relate most to the younger son, the older son, or the waiting father, there's something here for you. In this episode, we explore the significance of Ash Wednesday and the season of Lent—40 days of repentance, mourning, and fasting in preparation for Easter. Drawing parallels to an athlete's disciplined training, we discuss how fasting trains us to rely on God's Word rather than our appetites. Jesus Himself calls us to fast, and through this practice, we create space for prayer, reflection, and repentance. We dive into the deeper purpose of fasting, how it sharpens our prayers, and how it helps us live in greater dependence on God. The Mountain E12 — If Jesus' role as the promised mountaintop intercessor was unclear from the mountain stories in the Gospels, the author of the letter to the Hebrews wants to make it explicit. Drawing together imagery of Moses on Mount Sinai, the levitical priesthood, and the Old Testament sacrificial system, Hebrews declares that Jesus is the eternal high priest who can ascend to the holy mountain for the people through the blood of his own sacrifice. In this episode, Jon and Tim wrap up our series on The Mountain by exploring Jesus' ascension to the heavenly cosmic mountain, thereby opening the door for humanity.View all of our resources for The Mountain →Timestamps Chapter 1: Recap of the Mountain Theme (0:00-11:31)Chapter 2: The Divine Son, Perfect Sacrifice, and Cosmic High Priest (11:31-40:14)Chapter 3: Draw Near to the Heavenly Mount Zion (40:14-58:28)Chapter 4: Diving Deeper into the Mountain Theme (58:28-1:02:37)Official Episode TranscriptView this episode's official transcript.Referenced ResourcesRethinking the Atonement: New Perspectives on Jesus's Death, Resurrection, and Ascension by David M.
