“What does active participation at Mass mean?” This question opens a discussion on the significance of engagement during the liturgy, including the practices of kneeling and standing at key moments. Other topics addressed include the meaning behind the priest’s prayer for “servants” during Mass and the implications of Eucharistic adoration as a spiritual weapon. Join the Catholic Answers Live Club Newsletter Invite our apologists to speak at your parish! Visit Catholicanswersspeakers.com Questions Covered: 02:20 – Eucharistic adoration is a neglected spiritual weapon. 11:08 – What does active participation at Mass mean? 15:53 – At the Agnus Dei is see a lot of people kneel and a lot of people stand. Which are we supposed to be doing? Also toward the end of Communion, when do we stop kneeling and start sitting — after the cleaning of the vessels, or when the tabernacle is closed? 23:06 – During the Mass the priest says “we pray for your servants” and then he pauses. Who are the servants referred to here? 29:23 – The Bible talks about a “mystery gospel” and a “secret doctrine”. I don't have the chapter and verse but believe me it's there. Do you have any insights into what these are? 36:05 – Is there ever a scenario where a non-Catholic who is aware of the Church can be saved? 42:40 – I kneel at the Agnus Dei because I think we should kneel when the tabernacle is open. The Bible says that we kneel before God. 45:45 – My non-Catholic friend comes to Mass with me sometimes. He wants to receive communion but I tell him he can't, that he needs to approach with his arms crossed. But he receives communion anyway. Should I stop inviting him? Have I sinned by not being forceful enough? 51:09 – I saw on YouTube that when Jesus was a child he fell from a roof, and he turned mud into birds, and other miracles. Are these true?

This sermon explores Nehemiah chapter 2, teaching how prayerful dependence on God leads to faithful action. The message addresses the common struggle of knowing what to do when God seems to be moving slowly, warning against two spiritual ditches: giving up in passivity or taking control through manipulation. Instead, the sermon presents a third way—waiting on the Lord while remaining actively obedient. Using Nehemiah's example, the message shows how to step forward with courage, ground ourselves in humility and preparation, and stand firm against opposition and self-righteousness. The central teaching emphasizes that true faith involves both deep dependence on God and diligent action, summarized as "step, ground, stand."Main Points:Faith Steps Forward (2:1–8) Obedience in “waiting for the Lord” transitions to obedience in courageous and diligent action as the Lord leads.Vision Gets Grounded (2:9–16)Faithful leaders don't need fanfare; they humbly gather facts to help them discern faithful action.Leadership Stands Firm (2:17–20)God's servant puts to death any self-righteousness and invites God's people to move in unity toward God's promises.Scripture Referenced:Nehemiah 2:1-20 (main passage); Nehemiah 1; 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18; Proverbs 21:1; Psalm 27:14; Lamentations 3:25; Isaiah 40:31; Proverbs 18:13; Proverbs 19:2; Proverbs 14:15; Proverbs 31; Job 29 and 31; Ecclesiastes 3:1-5; Proverbs 28:1; Esther 4; Daniel 6; Genesis 16; Matthew 22:21Community Group Guide:Begin with Prayer - Begin by asking God to help your group share authentically and honestly in a way that encourages one another and pushes your group toward Christ.Discussion Questions:Part 1: The Two Ditches (Introduction)Which "ditch" do you tend to fall into when facing difficult circumstances?Giving up and becoming passive ("If God wants to fix it, He'll fix it")Taking control and moving ahead without God ("God helps those who help themselves")Part 2: Stepping Forward (Read Nehemiah 2:1-8)Nehemiah waited four months before acting. How do you distinguish between God's timing and your own procrastination or fear?Nehemiah's instinct to pray in the moment (v. 4) reveals a heart shaped by faithful waiting on the Lord. Often, when we wait on God seeking answers, He deepens relationship instead. Has there been a season where God Himself became more precious to you than the outcome you were hoping for?Part 3: Grounding in Humility (Read Nehemiah 2:9-16)Nehemiah gathered facts before announcing his plan. How does the principle "facts are our friends" apply to a decision you're currently facing?Nehemiah chose discretion over fanfare.Where in your life might you be tempted to seek recognition or justification rather than quietly trusting God with your faithfulness?Part 4: Standing Firm (Read Nehemiah 2:17-20)When opposition came, Nehemiah stood firm because he knew 'what time it is' - how does closeness with God help you define reality and discern when to stand against criticism?Practical Application:If you are waiting on the Lord in a particular area, take note of how many times this week you're tempted to either give up or take control.Journal about those instances and confess this to God, asking the Spirit to help you depend on His leadership as you faithfully wait.Share with someone in your Community Group if there is a tendency one way or another and ask them to join you in praying against it.Read Nehemiah 3 in preparation for Sunday's sermon.Personal Reflection:What am I waiting on God for right now? What faithful action can I take while I wait?Where do I need to ground myself in humility and preparation? Are there any facts I need to gather before I am ready to act?Are there any areas where I am looking for fanfare that I need to confess to God?Worship Setlist: Life Defined; Agnus Dei; All Hail King Jesus; Shout to the Lord; Build My Life; Yet Not I But Through Christ in Me

What do we mean when we say Jesus “takes away the sins of the world”? Joe Rockey and Father Boniface Hicks unpack how sin ruptures relationship—with God, others, creation, and even our own hearts—and how Christ repairs that rupture. We explore justice, mercy, and why divine love doesn't erase consequences but enters them, heals us, and restores right worship and communion. We also contrast Adam's fall with Christ's redeeming love and consider our part: God saves us with our cooperation. Through it all we keep the three lenses clear—honesty with self, charity toward others, under a living relationship with God.Key IdeasSin's effects: rupture with God, one another, creation, and self; shame, blame, mistrust, and debt remain until healed. How Christ “takes away” sin: self-sacrificing love enters our wounds, satisfies justice, restores communion, and divinizes us by union with Him.Mercy doesn't cancel consequences: relationships still need repair, trust-building, and inner healing—grace empowers the work. Not a spectator sport: “created without us; redeemed with us”—our free cooperation (repentance, worship, acts of love) matters. From Fall to fullness: covenant history rises and falls until Christ; in Him, grace sustains steady growth toward holiness.Links & ReferencesScripture named (no links):The Fall and its ruptures (Genesis 3).“Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” (John 1:29).Healings linked to faith (e.g., Mark 5:34; Luke 7:50; Luke 8:48).Liturgy referenced (no link): Agnus Dei (“Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world…”).CTAIf this helped, please leave a review or share this episode with a friend.Questions or thoughts? The hymnal prayer "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us" originates from the Book of John and the Book of Revelation in the Bible, and has been incorporated into Christian liturgy by its Latin name, Agnus Dei (meaning Lamb of God) since at least the 7th century. The phrase originates with John the Baptist's declaration, who, upon seeing Jesus, proclaimed, "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). This was a symbolic reference to the Passover lamb, an unblemished animal sacrificed to deliver the Israelites from slavery. that Jesus is the "Lamb of God". The prayer was officially added to the Roman Rite around the late 7th century and is now a standard part of the Catholic and many other Christian masses, typically occurring during the breaking of the consecrated bread before communion. The worship of the "slain, yet triumphant" Lamb in the New testament Book of Revelation is a vision of the risen Christ, which reinforces the "Lamb of God" imagery in the heavenly liturgy. The prayer acknowledges Christ as the ultimate sacrifice, whose death provides a way for believers to be freed from the bondage of sin. It calls for mercy upon the worshipers and, in its third invocation, asks for peace. The Parable of the Lost Sheep reveals the Father's passionate heart to pursue even one straying believer. This love and grace motivate Jesus' command on how to "gain your brother" when sin divides. When Peter asks about the limits of this forgiveness, the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant provides a stark contrast: God's infinite debt-canceling grace, in light of Christ's atonement, versus the petty and calculating unforgiveness of man.  The Rev. Peter Burfeind, pastor of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Union City, MI and Agnus Dei Lutheran Church in Marshall, MI, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Matthew 18:(11), 12-35.  To learn more about Our Savior and Agnus Dei, visit facebook.com/oursaviorunioncity and agnusdeimarshall.com. The Gospel of Matthew bridges Old and New Testaments, presenting Jesus as the promised Messiah who fulfills the Law we could never keep and establishes His kingdom of grace for all nations. Written by a tax collector transformed by pure grace, Matthew reveals Christ as the true Son of David and Emmanuel (God with us) who challenges us with the crushing demands of the Law in His Sermon on the Mount to the sweet comfort of the Gospel in His death and resurrection. From royal genealogy to glorious resurrection, this verse-by-verse study proclaims the One who conquered sin, death, and the devil for us, now delivering forgiveness, life, and salvation through Word and Sacrament as He remains with His church always, even to the end of the age.  Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. Not a single palm frond or “Hosanna” in this year's Palm Sunday reading. Luke's version of Jesus' procession toward and into Jerusalem instead records people throwing their coats on the ground. Rather than simply reaching for a fallen branch, instead those participating in Jesus' political street theatre give something of themselves that costs them a little something; the way Pastor Megan's spontaneously discarded cardigan resulted in a very cold experience of worship. Thank you to the child-prophets in the church who spontaneously responded by bringing their sweaters to throw into the center of our worship circle as well. We experientially learned just how potent this action was as the crowds moved with Jesus toward his confrontation with the powers of the Empire. Today in the Catholic Mass Series, we finish our discussion of Sacred Music in the Liturgy. There has long been tension between the creative and innovative developments of music with the need to regulate what is appropriate and fitting for use during the Holy Sacrifice. Does this mean that we need to only use music that has been composed centuries ago? What about some of the hymns that we have grown up with – are they appropriate? To answer these and other questions, we discuss what type of music is and is not proper during Mass.
