In this full-length episode of Draw Near, we return to the mic for a heartfelt conversation on one of the most essential themes of our faith—mercy. What does it really mean to be merciful? Is mercy just forgiveness, or something more? And in a world full of division, anxiety, and wounds, how can God's mercy truly heal us and flow through us to others? Together, we explore: How Scripture and the Catechism define mercy The surprising ways we've experienced God's mercy in our lives Why mercy is essential to healing broken relationships—and how to live it Practical ways to grow in compassion, patience, and forgiveness (including with ourselves) Why mercy and truth must go hand-in-hand in today's Church and culture A powerful story about St. Francis and rebuilding the Church with love and mercy What it means to show mercy without compromising truth We also share personal stories of struggle, healing, and God's never-ending patience, including a time of wrestling with anger toward God—and how mercy transformed it. Is it possible to feel joy in the midst of sorrow? Can we call Holy Week happy even while meditating on the suffering of Jesus? In this short and heartfelt Holy Week reflection, Fred and Kara share a deeply personal and spiritually rich meditation on John 11—the raising of Lazarus. Together, we explore what it means for Jesus to stand before our tombs and call us by name, how we're invited into community to help “unbind” one another from the grave clothes of fear, shame, and sin, and how the resurrection is not just something we believe in—it's something we're called to live. Whether you're walking through grief, wrestling with God's timing, or just longing for renewal, this episode is a companion for your journey toward Easter joy. You'll also hear stories from our own lives, encouragement for your spiritual walk, and a Holy Week challenge to invite God into your deepest burdens. This week on Draw Near, we dive into one of the most beloved parables in all of Scripture—the Prodigal Son. But this time, we ask three questions that challenge us to look deeper: How is God's love different from the love we experience from others—or even from ourselves? What does “coming home to the Father” look like in real life? And how do we respond when grace feels... unfair? With humor, vulnerability, and heart, we reflect on the extravagant mercy of God, the wounds we carry in how we love (and fail to love), and the real-life humility it takes to return home—again and again. Whether you relate most to the younger son, the older son, or the waiting father, there's something here for you. Draw Near to Christ and Draw Near to one another. Relationships, friendships rooted in Christ; sharing over coffee and helping one another keep eyes on Jesus and fight the good fight of faith. This has always been at the heart of Draw Near and all that we do. That said, we could think of no better way to celebrate our 200th Episode, than spotlighting some "Best of Guests" moments. The truth is, there are too many to fit in one episode. But prayerfully, we believe this is a great attempt. We pray it will be a blessing to you! In the deeply personal first half of this episode, Fred and Kara reflect on their relationship with Mary, and how that has changed and grown over the years. Fred shares more of his testimony about converting to Catholicism and the role Mary played in that process. He also reflects on issues such as identity, childhood trauma, mistrust, and difficult family experiences and how these can effect our relationship with God; as well as with Mary. He shares the story of his relationship with Mary, and how she has helped him to find healing. Christ, while bleeding out and dying on the Cross, said to his Mother, “Behold your son;” and to his beloved disciple, “Behold your Mother.” Scripture then affirms that from that day, this beloved disciple “took her into his home.” We to, as beloved disciples must take her into our homes, and allow the love of the Mother of God to penetrate our hearts as only that of a faithful mother can. Her heart is to draw us near to the source of peace that surpasses all understanding: her son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In the second half, we return to Kara's teaching on the Immaculate Conception, which we celebrate on December 8. Kara dives into a scriptural study of key texts that point to Mary's Immaculate Conception with hopes that each listener would be drawn deeper into the celebration of this Holy Day of Obligation. Questions answered in the second half: * How do we know Mary was special or set apart? * What is the Immaculate Conception? * What is Original Sin? Where is that in Scripture? * Where is Mary's Immaculate Conception found in Scripture? Purchase the book, Hail Holy Queen by Scott Hahn here. Do you praise God in EVERYTHING?... the Good AND the Pain? With Thanksgiving fast approaching, it is common to be thankful for the good gifts, graces, love, or comforts of life. But, how often do we thank God for the thorn in our side, the pit we have fallen into, or the desert we simply cannot find a way out of? In this episode of the Catholic podcast, Draw Near, Fred and Kara reflect on 2 Scripture passages focusing on gratitude to God in the midst of difficulty. Scripture passages mentioned this episode: Fred's Passage: Psalm 103 (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Psalm%20103&version=RSV) Kara's Passage: 2 Corinthians 12: 5-10 (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=2%20Corinthians%2012%3A5-10&version=NRSVUE) Book Fred and/or Kara to speak by visiting the Draw Near "booking page (https://www.drawnear.me/booking)." In a radio broadcast from 1965, Paul Harvey gave a famous address called "If I were the devil." What would be the devils tactics to draw people away from God and away from the Church? Has he won? Where is God when looking at the state of the world? In this Draw Near podcast episode, Fred and Kara offer commentary on this address. In John chapter 14, Jesus says, "Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it." But what do these words mean? What can we learn from this? How should it effect the way we live our lives? The way we pray? In this episode, we reflect on the words of Jesus in John 14:12-14 as we look for answers to these questions. Scriptures Mentioned In This Episode John 14:12-14 “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I go to the Father. Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son; f you ask anything in my name, I will do it. Mark 11:22-26 And Jesus answered them, “Have faith in God. Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,' and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer, believe that you receive it, and you will. And whenever you stand praying, forgive, if you have anything against any one; so that your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.” John 15:15-17 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit, and so prove to be my disciples. Matthew 21:21-22 And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and never doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,' it will be done. And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.” Luke 18:1-8 (Parable of the Unjust Judge) And he told them a parable, to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. He said, “In a certain city there was a judge who neither feared God nor regarded man; and there was a widow in that city who kept coming to him and saying, ‘Vindicate me against my adversary.' For a while he refused; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Though I neither fear God nor regard man, yet because this widow bothers me, I will vindicate her, or she will wear me out by her continual coming.'” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unrighteous judge says. And will not God vindicate his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them? I tell you, he will vindicate them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man comes, will he find faith on earth?” Mark 9:14-24 And when they came to the disciples, they saw a great crowd about them, and scribes arguing with them. And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him, were greatly amazed, and ran up to him and greeted him. And he asked them, “What are you discussing with them?” And one of the crowd answered him, “Teacher, I brought my son to you, for he has a dumb spirit; and wherever it seizes him, it dashes him down; and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid; and I asked your disciples to cast it out, and they were not able.” And he answered them, “O faithless generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him to me.” And they brought the boy to him; and when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus[d] asked his father, “How long has he had this?” And he said, “From childhood. And it has often cast him into the fire and into the water, to destroy him; but if you can do anything, have pity on us and help us.” And Jesus said to him, “If you can! All things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out[e] and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” From the Catechism of the Catholic Church Par. 2609 Once committed to conversion, the heart learns to pray in faith. Faith is a filial adherence to God beyond what we feel and understand. It is possible because the beloved Son gives us access to the Father. He can ask us to "seek" and to "knock," since he himself is the door and the way. The desire for meaningful friendship is a beautiful and very human want. We were made for relationship and both the desire for and friendship itself, are gifts from God. Yet, so many of us often feel alone; or, lost in a sea of acquaintances, we feel like we don't have any "real" friends. We feel alone. We find ourselves focussing more on "fitting in" than belonging; of allowing ourselves to be known by different "versions" of ourselves, rather than who we actually are. How are we to overcome this? We live in a time in which social media shapes our culture and our thinking so much. We click "add friend" to add "friends." Yet, we find little fulfillment in this. How are we to actually "Add Friend" in real life? How do we "friend?" Why is it more important to "belong" in a friendship, than to simply "fit in?" What can we learn from Jesus about what true friendship looks like? How can we follow his example? These are some of the questions we set out to answer as we reflect on Scripture, our own experiences, and of course, (and in a very much deep and personal way) our own friendship. *Scriptures we mention in this episode: * Proverbs 27:17 Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another. Sirach 6:14-17 A faithful friend is a sturdy shelter: he that has found one has found a treasure. There is nothing so precious as a faithful friend, and no scales can measure his excellence. A faithful friend is an elixir of life; and those who fear the Lord will find him. Whoever fears the Lord directs his friendship aright, for as he is, so is his neighbor also. Pov 18:24 There are friends who pretend to be friends, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. John 15:12-13 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. 1 thes 5:11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. Col 3:13 forbearing one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. Gal 6:2 Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Eph 4:29 Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for edifying, as fits the occasion, that it may impart grace to those who hear. Heb 3:12-13 Take care, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Heb 10:23-24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. Eph 5:15-20 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, 16 making the most of the time, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your heart, 20 always and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father. 21 Be subject to one another out of reverence for Christ. In this final episode of My Lord and My God, we explore the meaning of the phrase, drawn from Church teaching, "The Eucharist is the Source and Summit of our Faith." Why is it important? In Scripture, Christ wants to abide in us; to cast our anxieties upon Him. We are reminded that it is only in Him that we have life in the fullest and truest sense. We also read that He will be with us even until the "close of the age"; He invites us to that great heavenly wedding feast as the true and final SUMMIT! What does this all have to do with the Eucharist or your life? ...Everything! Scriptures referenced in this episode Matthew 11:28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. John 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live for ever; and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world is my flesh.” Matthew 26:26 Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, “Take, eat; this is my body.” 1 Corinthians 11:24 and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” John 6:56 He who eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. John 6:63 It is the spirit that gives life, the flesh is of no avail; the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. Revelation 19:6-9 Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty thunderpeals, crying, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to be clothed with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” *Catechism of the Catholic Church References: * 1324: The Eucharist is "the source and summit of the Christian life." "The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch. 1407: The Eucharist is the heart and the summit of the Church's life, for in it Christ associates his Church and all her members with his sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving offered once for all on the cross to his Father; by this sacrifice he pours out the graces of salvation on his Body which is the Church. Despite the world being so "connected," many of us find ourselves struggling with feelings of isolation and loneliness. We have many "friends," or more accurately, "best acquaintances," but we often lack the meaningful relationships; the friendships we long for that are characterized by love, vulnerability, mutual encouragement and accountability. What can Scripture teach us about friendship? How do we find and maintain these friendships? What can the saints teach us? What does Aristotle have to do with this? Find out on this episode of Draw Near as Fred and Kara discuss all of this and share from their own close friendship! Fred's struggle with the protestant teaching on "communion" actually led him to believe the Catholic understanding! Kara grew up not knowing that, as a Catholic, she shouldn't receive "communion" in other Churches. And why can't non-Catholics receive the Eucharist in the Catholic Church? Who are "Fred and Kara?" As we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus at the beginning of this Easter season, we revisit the topic of suffering and reflect on its relationship to the Resurrection; and the experience of resurrection in our own lives. Why do we suffer? What purpose does it serve? How should we approach it? Why does the Lord allow it? And can anything good come from it? In this episode we pull ALOT from Scripture, get a little personal and honest, and reflect suffering in our own lives, and the life of Job, in reflecting on the answers to these questions. *Scriptures mentioned in this episode: * 1 Pet 2:21: “To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.” Luke 21:17: You will be hated by all because of my name. Mt 7:13-14 the gate is wide and the way is easy, that leads to destruction… For the gate is narrow and the way is hard, that leads to life. Jn 16:33 In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. Rom 8:18 I consider that the sufferings we presently endure are minuscule in comparison with the glory to be revealed in us. Psalm 23 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want; he makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,[d] I fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever. 1 Peter 1:7 so that the genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold which though perishable is tested by fire, may redound to praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. James 1:2-4 Count it all joy, my brethren, when you meet various trials, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. 4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. Colossians 1:24 Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I complete what is lacking[a] in Christ's afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, Job 13:15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him. Job 38:4-7 Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. Who determined its measurements—surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone, when the morning stars sang together, and all the sons of God shouted for joy? Job 40:3-5 Then Job answered the Lord: “Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer thee? I lay my hand on my mouth. I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further.” Job 42:1-6 Then Job answered the Lord: “I know that thou canst do all things, and that no purpose of thine can be thwarted. ‘Who is this that hides counsel without knowledge?' Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know. ‘Hear, and I will speak; I will question you, and you declare to me.' I had heard of thee by the hearing of the ear, but now my eye sees thee; therefore I despise myself, and repent in dust and ashes.” Episodes we reference in this episode: [Fr Stu: A Story of Mercy](https://drawnear.fireside.fm/43) [Willingness to Suffer](https://drawnear.fireside.fm/6) [Redemptive Suffering](https://drawnear.fireside.fm/7) Book Fred and/or Kara to speak by visiting the Draw Near "booking page (https://www.drawnear.me/booking)." Michael Scanlan, TOR Lord God, you who provide the fire for a transformed life, I come before you this day and beg for the fire of your love and mercy to forgive my sins and free me from my self-imposed bondages. I pray for the fire of your Spirit to lead me in repentance and conversion so I may be faithful in following you. I pray for the fire of your love to ignite my heart with love for my brothers and sisters and lead me to intercede in faith for them. I pray for the fire of faith to be committed to you and your teaching as a servant to His Master. I pray for the fire of your desire to save all mankind to inflame me so that I can witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ and be a channel for the salvation of mankind. In this episode, taken from the third season of the I See a Movement podcast, we are joined by Eric Gallagher as we discuss our own personal victories through struggles and crosses. We take a look at how suffering and trials give way to resurrection! We also reflect on the necessity of embracing our own brokenness and weaknesses, and how, by grace, this helps us to trust the Lord more and become better instruments of healing in the world. We also reflect on what it means to live a Eucharistic life as we discuss the necessity of embracing our own brokenness and weaknesses. "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" In this episode, by looking at the Scriptural meaning and themes of "the lamb," we can better understand the gravity of the words we hear every mass... but perhaps have never truly heard. These words, spoken by John the Baptist (John 1:29), are familiar to us, as Catholics. We hear them at each mass as the priest raises the consecrated bread and wine high to the Heavens. But, as John spoke these words, they would have had familiar meaning to the believers of his time, as well! What did they hear in these words that led people to immediately follow Jesus (John 1:37)? Do we have ears to hear these connections? Book Fred and/or Kara to speak by visiting the Draw Near "booking page (https://www.drawnear.me/booking)." We are joined by our good friend Eric Gallagher over the next five epsiodes on the apostolate and the interior life! This episode originally posted as part of the Substack platform/podcast we share with Eric, called I See a Movement! We thought this series would be a blessing to all of our Draw Near listeners on your Lenten journey. And of course... we also want you to check out https://www.iseeamovement.com/ In this episdoe, we begin by laying a foundation for this new season. Here we look at the foundational truth, that by grace and the power of the Holy Spirit at work in our souls, we are apostles. We take an honest look at what this means for our our lives; and discuss our tendency to want to be independent and in control. We look at the value and necessity of the interior life, and the role our relationship with Christ bears in the fruitfulness of our efforts. We also take a look at the importance of prayer and humility as the greatest strength. Book Fred and/or Kara to speak by visiting the Draw Near "booking page (https://www.drawnear.me/booking)." In this episode we are joined by our friend, catholic speaker, author, filmmaker, founder of the Science of Sainthood, and host of the Art of Catholic podcast, Matthew Leonard. What was the journey from being a Protestant pastor's kid to receiving Christ in the Eucharist like for Matthew? How did meeting one Catholic family who did "relational evangelization" well set him on a new path? Matthew and Fred share what it is like to discover Catholic teaching, and how it led them both through an, at times, confusing process asking the Lord, "Who are you?" Why was the question of authority so critical in this process? This, too. is discussed. We look at the "pedestal" that converts can sometimes be placed on, and offer some encouragement for cradle Catholics. Matthew also describes the radical new way he encountered Christ in the Eucharist and the realization of becoming a part of a family that goes beyond his blood relations, and why that matters! Finally, we look at the central question of our show: "How has your encounter with Christ in the Eucharist changed your life?" The answer to this question has everything to do with how we build our lives; what we are centered on (or more accurately, WHO we are rooted in). Should our encounter with Christ in the Eucharist be evident to those around us? If so, how? What is the role of sacrfice in a Eucharistic life? Listen to find out! Reaching back into "the vault" from a couple of years ago, we share one of our most popular Lenten episodes. If you think you are good at Lent… You are not. No one is good at Lent. But there is a good reason for this. Lent is often a challenge because it requires letting go of things that hinder us in following the Lord. It requires taking up the cross and denying ourselves for something much greater and more beautiful: a deeper encounter with the love and person of Jesus Christ. This helps us to begin to think more like Christ, to live more like Christ, to love more like Christ. But how do we do this? In this episode we invite some of our friends to share some of their own thoughts and experiences of drawing near to the Lord during Lent. Special Guests: * Sonja Corbitt (https://www.biblestudyevangelista.com/) * Taylor Schroll (https://www.fortecatholic.com/) * Matthew Leonard (https://matthewsleonard.com/) Link to our previous Lent episode, Why Give Up? (https://www.drawnear.me/podcast/14) *Some of Kara and Fred's tips: * * St John the Baptist: "he must increase, and I must decrease." * Pray to your guardian angel to "humiliate you interiorly" * Pray with this question: What is holding me back from growing in my relationship with Christ? * Hear more on this in our "Come Follow Me (https://www.drawnear.me/podcast/8)" episode. In this episode we are joined by one of the people that makes My Lord and My God (and the Draw Near apostolate) possible: John Fitzsimmons! In his testimony we hear how the legacy of faith has been handed down from one generation to the next; how encountering Christ in the Eucharist shaped his childhood and fostered in him a desire for more as a new father. We also hear how prioritizing that encounter with Christ in the Eucharist has shaped his family and the impact it has had on his children (two of which we are blessed to call friends). Finally, we see what great fruit "dragging your kids to daily Mass" can bear as John shares how his son Jimmy (seminarian) and his daughter, Mary Kate (entering religious life), are deepening his own faith by sharing with him their own encounter with Christ in the Eucharist!
