How can we help others shift from a maintenance mindset to a missional one? It starts with prayer and reflection but also requires creating an environment where people feel safe to explore new ideas and take risks. Encouraging continuous learning is key. By embracing new knowledge and experiences, we can deepen our faith and learn to live it out more fully. This journey of growth breaks down silos, builds stronger relationships, and fosters a vibrant, mission-oriented community. Join me as I sit down with Fr. Dave Belt, Pastor of St. Stephen the Martyr in Omaha, to discuss the transformative power of learning. He shares personal stories, effective team-building practices, and insights on fostering a sense of purpose and mission, Discover how helping others see their efforts as part of something larger and more meaningful can inspire a dynamic, responsive, and Gospel-rooted Church—the Church that God is calling us to be. In Part 3 of our A PART OF THE HEART Series, we're challenged to move beyond being mere consumers or contributors in our faith journey to becoming true champions for God's kingdom. The sermon draws inspiration from the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2, where Peter, backed by the other apostles, boldly proclaimed the gospel. This unity and collective courage serve as a model for us today. We're reminded that 'we go together' - our faith isn't just an individual pursuit, but a communal effort to build God's kingdom. The message emphasizes the danger of the 'bystander effect' in our spiritual lives, urging us to actively intervene and share our faith rather than remaining passive. As we reflect on this, we're encouraged to ask ourselves: Are we truly all in, heart and soul, for God's mission? Are we ready to step up and be the champions our churches and communities need?

Thought to share? Send me a text...Ever wondered how embracing a supporting role can shape your leadership journey? Join me, Betsy Marvin, as I weave a personal narrative from my high school band days, playing the flute, to explore the profound concept of "second chair" leadership. Through the lens of John the Baptist, who perfectly embodied the essence of humility and purpose in a supporting role, we explore how true leadership often requires knowing when to lead and when to support. As we delve into the Gospel of John, discover how the introduction of Jesus paints a vivid picture of his divine purpose.  Through the compelling stories of Andrew, Philip, and Nathaniel, learn about the transformative power of acknowledging Jesus's rightful place in our lives and the unique way he calls each of us to witness life's greater things. Together, we'll explore how feeling seen and known by God can redefine our understanding of faith and leadership. To read my blog, find out more about me, or to book a speaking engagement, head to https://betsymarvin.com/For access to past podcasts and transcripts, head tohttps://betsymarvin.com/podcasts/You can follow me on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/betsyjmarvin/and Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/betsy.marvin.98

Send me a text! I'd love to know what you're thinking!Strong sermons, pastoral care and counseling, leading Bible studies.  These are all really important for effective ministry leadership.  But leading a church or organization is more than just that, isn't it?In this episode, Mike Bonem--consultant, coach, and author of The Art of Leading Change--offers invaluable insights into how trust, effective team-building, and adept communication can transform your leadership and help you navigate the complexities of ministry.THIS EPISODE'S HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE:Mike Bonem highlights the importance of trust in leadership, emphasizing that people are unlikely to give 110% if they don't trust their leader.Markus Watson notes that trust has different dimensions and can erode gradually through unfulfilled commitments and unmet expectations.Trust is built through follow-through on commitments and investing in relational components. When there is trust within a congregation, people are more likely to give the benefit of the doubt, get involved in initiatives, and commit to change.Trust is about being trustworthy as a person, not just doing things to gain trust.Manipulation by leaders is easily detected, underscoring the necessity of integrity.Mike Bonem discusses the importance of building strong teams to handle heavy loads and accomplish needed tasks.Building a strong team involves intentionally enlisting different perspectives and gifts. It is important to include people who challenge and bring different perspectives in the planning stages, even if they are skeptical.Pastors should recognize the tendency to go alone and consider where they will be a year from now if they don't enlist a team.Mike Bonem elaborates on the value of getting different perspectives and gifts in the room for effective team building.Markus Watson reflects on his own experience of leading change in a church amid the pandemic, highlighting how difficult it was.Mike Bonem emphasizes the importance of incorporating business practices into pastoral work to improve leadership in congregations.Mike Bonem and Markus Watson discuss key principles for leading change, including leading with trust, recognizing the importance of strong teams, and understanding that resistors are not the enemy.Mike Bonem's Fuller Equip online course "The Business of Ministry" provides fundamental training for pastors in areas such as finance, HR, and church business. The first module of Mike Bonem's course addresses the debate on whether the church should adopt business practices to ensure good stewardship of resources.RELEVANT RESOURCES AND LINKS:Mike Bonem:Website – mikebonem.comBusiness of Ministry online courseBooks mentioned:The Art of Leading Change, by Mike BonemLeading from the Second Chair, by Mike BonemStrengthening the Soul of Your Leadership, by Ruth Haley BartonSacred Rhythms, by Ruth Haley BartonGood to Great, by Jim CollinsRelated episodes:Did you know Spiritual Life and Leadership has been named the #1 Spiritual Leadership Podcast by the Feedspot Podcasters Database? Tracy is a gifted musician, so it was fitting for him to use music as the illustration to instruct today's audience how to serve under other leaders. They might not have the final word, but their words are important. They might not always get their way, but they can help others stay true to the leader's way. The “second chair” is a place to serve, to care, to listen, to learn, to love, and to lead. How can the second chair be a peacemaker? How does the second chair have an important sphere of influence? How can you make things better? What is your lane, and how can you stay faithful and humble in that lane? How can you discover and deploy your greatest gifts? Learn from Tracy. There is tension at times between ambition and submission, and in this episode, I have a conversation with Temi Pope from Union Church where we talk about being faithful in the second chair. We also had a great listener question come in from Mary Jones, asking how to lead individuals who have higher skills than your own.

How can we lead well and cultivate Christ-centered leadership in our students? Matt Coe joins us to explore this big topic and share from his experience as a Sports Leadership instructor. “Just defining Christian leadership in itself is no easy task, and then, when you bring in the cultural element, and the virtues and values of what a good leader is in that context, it's dramatically different.” GLOBE Project “If you have that underpinning of trust, then you can have robust conversations, then you can talk into people's lives. A leader must be able to read the situation, must interpret the situation, and then use the right leadership quality for that moment, all wrapped in love.” “The character of our students is vital, the practical application of the skills that we are teaching them - organization, decision-making, teamwork, conflict - all of these things that we deal with in the mission world, we have an opportunity to teach that.” “As we release our students into the wider world, we need to be able to teach them to be adaptable and versatile and flexible.” “How can we always guide them back to the cross through the opportunities that we give for leadership?” “Everyone has capacities to lead in different ways.” Lead Like Jesus by Blanchard, Hodges, and Hendry “Everyone has their gifts, everyone has their strengths, so let's play to those strengths and let's form a team around it.” Leading from the Second Chair by Bonem and Patterson The Ideal Team Player by Lencioni Did you miss our episode on growth mindset (Episode 15)? In this Episode, Austin interviews Larry Gimnich about Leading from the Second Chair and Building a Leadership Team. About Larry Gimnich:Larry Gimnich serves as Associate Pastor at New Life Church in Cabot, Arkansas as well as the Dean of the Cabot Purpose Institute Campus. Key Takeaways from this Episode:On Leading from the Second Chair: Ministry is pouring yourself in wherever you are at instead of always looking at the horizon. Your location of ministry is not a level of value, but gifting. Second-chair is not a lesser ministry, but a location of ministry. "Every church is better off when they have secure and committed second chairs." - Larry GimnichFor successful second-chair ministry, you need a confident and Christ-like first chair. First-chairs who aren't threatened by others having influence in the church. First-chairs who are not only willing to share the work, but also the people's hearts. 2 Keys of Cabot's Success: The attitude of the first-chair (Tim Gaddy) and the attitude of the congregation. On the Importance of Building a Leadership Team and Casting Vision:"You can't afford to not build a team." - Larry GimnichWe are called to equip saints to do the work of the ministry (Ephesians 4:12).Jesus had a compelling vision and He invited the disciples to take part in it. Sometimes, you can pay people just by having a clear vision for them to buy into. "People want to work for someone who has vision." - Larry Gimnich"People want to be involved in a work that is others-centered and not just menial tasks." - Larry Gimnich"Delegate real responsibility." - Chantry DeanYou don't need a team if you don't have a vision bigger than yourself."If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." - African Proverb"Individualism isn't productive in the Kingdom of God." - Larry GimnichVolunteers must feel that they are a part of the shared experience. In order to increase your volunteer base, you've got to share with them.Invite them in."We are all called to lead. It is God's best version of us." - Larry GimnichThese are just a few notes from this conversation. We pray it encourages, equips, and challenges you in your leadership. Episode Links and Resources:"The Boys in the Boat" by Daniel James Brown"How to Lead When You're Not in Charge" by Clay Scroggins"Leading from the Second Chair" by Mike Bonem & Roger Patterson"Thriving in the Second Chair" by Mike Bonem"Follow to Lead" by Stan Gleason"The Way of the Shepherd" by Kevin Leman
