Today we're pleased to learn from a 21-year MLS veteran and MLS Goalkeeper of the Year, Jon Busch. A career with many accolades, Jon started out as both a high school and college All-American. After leaving as an NCAA All-American at UNC-Charlotte, Jon spent the first 5 years of his professional career playing the U.S. I.S.L. where in 2001 he was named Goalkeeper of the Year. In 2002 Jon was drafted into the MLS by the Columbus Crew and won the U.S. Open Cup during his 5 seasons with the club. In 2007 Jon joined the Chicago Fire and in 2008 was named MLS Goalkeeper of the Year. Jon later signed with the San Jose Earthquakes and retired in 2018. During his time in San Jose, the idea of High Performance Goalkeeping was formed from a desire to give every youth goalkeeper the opportunity to wear top quality gloves, just like the pros, at affordable prices. (0:00-2:51) Greg Rakestraw is back for another edition of Soccer Saturday on 93.5 and 107.5 the Fan. Greg touches on Indy Eleven preseason action, news around the club and sets the agenda for a jam packed show on Soccer Saturday. (5:52-17:50) The head coach of the Indy Eleven, Mark Lowry, joins the show as he does most Saturdays. Greg and Mark start the discussion with the Eleven's seven-goal performance against Marion University this week and the next steps he wants to see his club take against the University of Indianapolis on Saturday. Then, Mark touches on Bobby Edwards' decision to leave the pitch for the coaching side of things in his mid 20's and what advice he has for any young coach entering the ranks. What's the on-field situation of the goalkeeping position? The coach and Rakestraw touch on that before spending some time discussing more personnel moves for the Eleven before Rakestraw ends the segment with some details on the newest members of the club - both players and coaches. (20:51-36:51) Through the magic of technology, Greg is joined by Jon Busch, the goalkeeper coach of the Scottish club Hibernian, better known as Hibs. Busch and Rakestraw discuss how he ended up there and the connections he had that got him into the European soccer coaching ranks. Jon touches on being thrown into the thick of things in the middle of the season and how he has approached his new position with Hibs. The work has been heavy and the hours have been long, but Jon touches on taking a few moments at each new place to appreciate the situation he is in and capture moments to remember. To end the conversation, Jon touches on what the next few months might look like into the summer months. (39:53-51:31) Duke Lacroix joins the show from the west coast as a current member of the Sacramento Republic and former member of the Indy Eleven. Greg and Duke discuss his now eight-year soccer career and reminisce about what Rakestraw dubs the greatest goal in Indy Eleven history. Duke touches on his involvement with the USL Black Players Alliance, what the group is focused on doing and why it's important. (54:31-57:10) Greg wraps up a busy Saturday morning with his thoughts on the FA Cup.

The latest AFTN Soccer Show is out for another packed show of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, and Canadian football chat. The new MLS season is seven weeks away and the news around the league is really starting to ramp up. There's new signings, new kits, new managerial vacancies, and doubts surrounding new teams. We chat about all of that and more this episode. In Whitecapsland a new defensive signing is set to be announced this week, with Angolan-Portuguese right back Bruno Gaspar joining on loan from CP Sporting. What will this mean for the porous Vancouver backline, which is now one of the most expensive in MLS history. Our feature interview this week is with one of those defensive pieces, goalkeeper Evan Newton. We have a lengthy chat with Evan about his move to Vancouver and his career so far. What advice did his mentor Jon Busch give him? Why did it take so long for the USL standout to get back to MLS? How did he unintentionally derail NYCFC's Champions League preparations? All this and more are discussed in a very enjoyable chat. We also delve into Thierry Henry's departure in Montreal and hear from VP and CEO Kevin Gilmore and Sporting Director Olivier Renard about his decision and where that leaves the club. But Montreal haven't been the only MLS side thrown into chaos this week as we look at the current mess in Sacramento, who have just lost their majority owner two years before they are set to join the league. Plus we continue our travels back in the TARDIS with Whitecaps midfielder Andy Rose to talk about revisiting some football history, find out Jake Nerwinski's favourite jam, and a goalkeeping legend features in this week's Wavelength. Here's the rundown for the main segments from the episode: 02.30: Whitecaps news recap Flash Five 09.27: Bruno Gaspar set to bolster Whitecaps defence 23.19: Jake Nerwinski's Favourite Jam 24.38: MLS 2021 kit releases 30.04: Evan Newton interview 74.51: Sacramento's MLS expansion thrown into chaos 86.32: Football Time Travels featuring Andy Rose 104.12: Wavelength - Petr Cech and Rogers Taylor - That's Football 109.49: Thierry Henry leaves CF Montreal high and dry - featuring audio from Kevin Gilmore and Olivier Renard
