That experience, he notes, fuels his determination to ensure others don't face the same despair without access to support and fairness. The conversation highlights the devastating ripple effects of pretrial detention. Losing a job, housing, or custody of children can happen within days or weeks behind bars, destabilizing lives long after release. Gaspar underscores that what people need most is not punishment, but stability and opportunity to move forward. He points to the $14 billion spent annually on detaining legally innocent people as a moral and fiscal failure, arguing those resources could be redirected toward real solutions like housing, treatment, and community support. Throughout the interview, Gaspar makes the case for reimagining pretrial justice—moving away from “assembly line” bail hearings toward meaningful due process and investments in services that actually promote safety. With stories of resilience and redemption, including clients who have rebuilt their lives after release, Gaspar emphasizes that human potential doesn't vanish because of a mistake or hardship. Instead, with compassion and support, people can and do thrive.

It seems there are news stories every week about the accelerating pace of innovation in gene therapy, but only about 50 therapies have been approved so far by the US Food and Drug Administration. Our guest today, Dr. Bobby Gaspar, leads a UK-based biotech company, Orchard Therapeutics, that developed one of those treatments using gene-modified stem cells in your blood that self-renew, so a single administration can give you potentially a lifelong effect. “Our approach is about correcting those hematopoietic stem cells and allowing them to give rise to cells that can then correct the disease,” explains Dr. Gaspar.  The therapy in focus is lenmeldy, the first approved treatment for metachromatic leukodystrophy, also known as MLD, a devastating inherited disorder that affects roughly 600 children worldwide. But Dr. Gaspar is optimistic that learnings from Orchard's work on MLD could be useful in treating much more common disorders including frontotemporal dementia, Crohn's disease and others. Al día de hoy podríamos mencionar una lista interminable de ilustres mujeres que han dejado grandes legados en sus escritos a la humanidad.Hoy se celebra el «Día de la Alfabetización» que tiene como propósito que los gobiernos, las sociedades civiles y otras partes interesadas busquen los avances para que las personas aprendan a leer y escribir sin distinción de género. Una de las maneras en que nosotras podemos ser parte de estos esfuerzos, es buscando a una persona que no sepa leer y escribir para convertirnos en su maestra. Todavía existen mujeres iletradas a quienes podríamos llegar con un mensaje de esperanza y brindar el curso de alfabetización con la Palabra de Dios. La Biblia es un gran instrumento para llevar a cabo esta obra.Según datos de la UNESCO, hasta 2016 había 758 millones de adultos sin alfabetización, de los cuales dos tercios son mujeres. Dadas estas cifras, podemos afirmar que cerca de nosotras hay una mujer que podemos ayudar. El texto de hoy afirma que la Escritura es útil para enseñar, y aunque se refiere a los asuntos espirituales, se ha comprobado que muchas personas han aprendido a leer a través de ella. Pon manos a la obra y ve en busca de tu alumna, abre sus ojos a la alfabetización y abre sus ojos a la luz de la verdad de Cristo. Que ella pueda por sí misma conocer la verdad y no estar más atada a la ignorancia y a las tinieblas. Es una manera práctica de evangelizar.

Arrested and exiled for refusing to swear allegiance to Napoleon, Gaspar returned after years of imprisonment to a war-torn Italy, where he fearlessly preached missions in remote and lawless regions, often facing violence and death threats. He reached out to bandits, prisoners, and the spiritually abandoned, calling them to conversion through the saving power of Christ's Precious Blood. Known for his fiery sermons, unwavering loyalty to the Pope, and deep Marian devotion, St. Gaspar was a reformer who renewed the faith in one of the darkest periods of Italian history.
