Detroit Lions Post Bengals Preseason Evaluation The first preseason game is rarely about the final score, and Detroit's 16-14 loss to Cincinnati was no exception. The Detroit Lions rested most of their established starters while the Bengals gave their first units early work, creating exactly the kind of uneven laboratory Dan Campbell wanted for evaluating the bottom half of his roster. Detroit's reserves hung around anyway, and by the end of the night there was far more to discuss than the scoreboard. On this episode of the Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Jeff Risdon break down what actually mattered from Lions vs. Bengals: which training camp battles moved, which players helped themselves, where injuries have complicated the depth chart, and whether anything we saw should change our confidence in this team. Hassanein and Saylors Turn Camp Buzz Into Game Production Ahmed Hassanein entered the night as one of the best stories of Lions training camp. Then his first snap produced a sack of Joe Burrow. That was not his only moment. Hassanein finished with two sacks, four tackles and a forced fumble, translating weeks of strong practice work into an actual NFL game environment. His development at big end suddenly looks less like an August curiosity and more like something that could affect Detroit's defensive rotation. Running back Jacob Saylors accomplished something similar. With injuries creating opportunities behind Jahmyr Gibbs and Isiah Pacheco, Saylors produced 55 rushing yards on eight carries and added three catches for 28 yards. The RB depth chart was already unsettled, and his performance ensures that conversation continues. Rookie right tackle Blake Miller also passed an important first test. Campbell's best review may have been that he barely noticed Miller during the game. For an offensive tackle making his NFL debut, that is usually a compliment. Ennis Rakestraw, Injuries and a Changing Depth Chart Few players needed these preseason snaps more than Ennis Rakestraw Jr. His first two seasons were disrupted by injuries, and this summer he has been trying to regain ground in a cornerback room where Rock Ya-Sin and Nick Whiteside have strengthened their positions. That made another injury scare particularly frustrating. Rakestraw left during the second quarter after an open-field tackle and did not return, but the immediate news was encouraging. X-rays showed no structural damage, and Campbell characterized the issue as a minor arm contusion. Mekhi Wingo also exited and could enter concussion protocol, while safety Loren Strickland required additional imaging after leaving the game. These are not simply medical notes in August. Every missed practice changes somebody else's opportunity, and those opportunities can reshape the final roster. The offense produced more mixed evaluations. Luke Altmyer flashed late with an 80-yard touchdown drive but also finished with two interceptions. Isaac TeSlaa had a difficult night, while Detroit's makeshift offensive line struggled with penalties and cohesion. Those performances matter because several of these competitions remain very much alive. What Should Lions Fans Think After Preseason Game One? The early confidence check should remain measured but positive. Detroit did not play this game to prove its starters could beat Cincinnati's starters. It played to learn about the players who might be needed when injuries inevitably arrive. Hassanein looks increasingly real. Saylors made his case. Miller looked comfortable. Rakestraw's situation remains worth watching. The defensive depth showed some bite, while several offensive depth battles remain unsettled. Detroit Lions Early Camp Report Training camp has moved from anticipation to evaluation, and the Detroit Lions are beginning to reveal which offseason assumptions can survive contact. With padded practices underway and the Hall of Fame Game signaling the return of NFL football, depth charts are shifting, injuries are creating opportunities, and competitions are becoming more serious. On this episode of the Detroit Lions Podcast, Chris and Jeff Risdon bring Allen Park to Lions fans with a close look at the camp battles unfolding now, roster moves created by injuries, early surprises, fan access, and the growing conversation around Jahmyr Gibbs. Camp Battles Are Beginning to Produce Answers The competition at outside cornerback remains one of the most important stories in camp. Jahmyr Gibbs Hold-In Changes the Backfield Picture The Jahmyr Gibbs hold-in is now one of the defining stories of Detroit Lions training camp. Gibbs has reported and remained around the team, but he has not participated in practice while his contractual future is unresolved. He is already under team control through the exercised fifth-year option, but his production and importance to the offense make a long-term extension a major organizational decision. His absence matters beyond the negotiating table. Isiah Pacheco has received more prominent work, while Jacob Saylors and Jabari Small have gained opportunities. Sione Vaki's facial and eye injuries further thinned the group and contributed to Detroit adding Raheem Blackshear. The result is a backfield competition that looks very different without its most explosive player taking snaps. The central question is how long the hold-in lasts, what it means for Gibbs' future in Detroit, and whether the missed practice time affects the installation of Drew Petzing's offense. Injuries, Surprises, and the Early Confidence Check The Lions are already adjusting to injuries throughout the roster. Brown said the Lions would add competition if needed. The risk-reward corner Detroit needs to actually see The Detroit Lions Podcast zeroed in on Ennis Rakestraw, the 2024 second-round pick who has become the clearest test of risk versus reward in the Lions secondary. The talent fits. The availability has not. He missed all of last season after a shoulder and pec injury in practice. Before that came a torn season in 2021 and a groin issue that cost him games in 2023, plus core muscle surgery that kept him out of the postseason showcase. Three NFL summers in, the team still lacks a full evaluation on the field. Fans connect this uncertainty to wider doubts about the 2024 draft class and Brad Holmes. The show pushed back on the idea that one class is holding the Detroit Lions back from contention. But Rakestraw sits at the heart of that conversation. If he hits, the cornerback room stabilizes without a search outside the building. If he doesn't, Detroit's margin thins. What we actually know: traits, usage, speed Rakestraw profiles as a press-man outside corner. Not a zone specialist. Not a slot by trade, even though he has taken some slot reps when healthy. He is smart, competitive, and embraces top assignments. The tape and the combine align on speed. His 4.54 shows. He does not have a chase gear when beaten and will need safety help over the top against burners. Do not expect him to carry Jameson Williams down the field. Short-area reaction and staying connected through routes are his strengths. There is one encouraging physical note. In camp, he looked noticeably sturdier with added muscle. The frame that measured 5-11 and 183 now appears closer to 190. That matters for durability and for finishing tackles, a part of his game the coaches like. 2026 reality: competition and special teams math The outside corner competition is crowded. Khalil Dorsey grabbed first-team reps early in camp. Avonte Maddox factors in. Roger McCreery is in the mix. Rakestraw has to prove he can hold up and win outside snaps, not just flash in drills. Special teams complicate his case. This staff often leans roster decisions toward special teams value, but Rakestraw's injury history makes heavy teams usage risky if he's tracking as a defensive contributor. The cleanest outcome is obvious. Rakestraw stays healthy all summer, trusts his body, and puts his press-man fit on tape. That would allow Detroit to replace the lost role that Terrion Arnold once filled without scrambling. The traits match the scheme. The question is health. Show it, then keep showing it. A draft class searching for traction The Detroit Lions Podcast put the 2024 draft class under a harsh light. Two years in, the group has flashed but not finished. The Detroit Lions need more in the NFL's tight margins. This feels like a prove-it season for the entire class, headlined by first-round pick Terryon Arnold at No. 24 overall after a trade up with Dallas from 28. Terryon Arnold needs consistent CB1 tape Arnold has shown it in stretches. Early last year he looked the part outside. Midseason he matured. He played less handsy. He read the receiver better. Then came the injury. Then penalties. Then a general lack of effectiveness. He has not played like a first-rounder yet. The expectation remains that he opens 2026 as a starting outside cornerback. The benefit of the doubt is fading. He has one more season before the fifth-year option decision becomes straightforward or complicated. The Dallas trade context matters Detroit paid a first and a third to move up for Arnold. Those Dallas picks turned into Tyler Guyton and Cooper Beebe. Guyton has started at tackle and shown an inconsistent but impressive profile. Beebe has started at center and been decent, short of high expectations. No one knows if the Lions would have made the same choices. They did spend time with Beebe at the Senior Bowl. Viewed through that prism, the move has not produced the intended return yet in Detroit. Ennis Rakestraw's availability and a crowded slot Rakestraw has played eight games in two years. Multiple injuries hit both seasons, echoing a college pattern where timing hurt his offseasons more than his Saturdays. This is a big year for him. The room around him has tightened. Detroit drafted Keith Abney in that spot and signed Roger McCreery there. Christian Risdon and Avante Maddox can play slot nickel. Outside, they brought Brockus back. Nick Whiteside is back, and to this point he has shown more in coverage than Rakestraw. The challenge is clear. Day 3 pieces still seeking a spark Giovanni Manu arrived as an offensive lineman from British Columbia in the fourth. Also in the fourth, Vaki was listed as a safety at Utah but Detroit drafted him to play running back, a role he handled at Utah and at the Senior Bowl. In the sixth, Mangin Wingo came in at defensive tackle from LSU. The Lions also added guard Chris Mahogany from Boston College. Collectively, the group has been underwhelming and frustrating.
