Today, Josh Margolis joins me for a new series! The Versus Series! On most episodes we discuss the middle ground, rather than one extreme or the other! But to spark discussion, we thought it would be fun to pin some common fitness camps against each other! So, hear our take and hopefully this will help you see things a little differently!Joshua Margolis – Founder of Mind Over Matter NYCInstagram: @mindovermatternycWebsite: MindOverMatterNYC.com
We had the pleasure of interviewing Tracy Bonham over Zoom video! Tracy Bonham became an overnight sensation in the mid-90s with a hit song and double Grammy® nominations for her Gold Record certified album The Burdens of Being Upright, an edgy and complex album of angsty alt-rock songs that included her chart-topping hit single, “Mother Mother.” Over the years, Bonham released six more albums to wide critical acclaim, but the debut album was the one that struck a chord with so many disenfranchised young people all over the world. While screaming “everything’s fine!” all over the globe, Bonham’s classical music education would continue to be an inspiration for her and would become something for her to rub up against, to challenge the idea that a musical performance must be perfect. In 2006, Tracy was touring the world as the featured vocalist and violinist with Blue Man Group for their second arena tour when she decided to take a break from life on the road to start a family. While at home, she called upon her classical music education and began teaching private piano, violin and voice lessons. Her special ability to connect with and inspire children was immediately obvious, and she began formulating a curriculum and an approach to teaching that were the building blocks of her new company, Melodeon Music House: www.melodeonmusichouse.com . In April 2021, she debuts her first children’s album based on her joyful approach to music education. Young Maestros Vol. 1 is a celebration of music and movement that includes 11 songs that aren’t only fun to dance and sing along to but also teach musical concepts in an entertaining and light-hearted way. Bassist Rene Hart collaborated on songwriting, and Josh Margolis co-produced the album with Bonham With these songs, Bonham conveys her conviction that anyone can make music, and anyone can get past limitations. The styles and messages of the songs harken back to the influences of such 1970s children’s media as Free To Be You And Me and Sesame Street. Bonham found that the educational materials available for beginners and intermediate levels (piano, violin, or voice) did not put enough emphasis on what she considered to be the building block of a life of musical exploration and inspiration: joy. Anyone can learn how to place their fingers on a piano keyboard, or on the fingerboard of a violin to make music. But the question is how do you get a child to really care about it? Instead, the Melodeon Music House approach demonstrates that the process of making music can be more about fun than the achievement. By learning the fundamentals of music, one can create a platform for self-expression that leads to empowerment and confidence for the rest of one’s life. Young Maestros Vol. 1 is just the beginning of the larger Melodeon Music House educational program that is infused with Bonham’s passion for theory, harmony and the emotional well-being of children. Since 2015, Bonham has been testing her curriculum at The Brooklyn Preschool of Science, where she fell in love with teaching preschool age children. We want to hear from you! [EPISODE] From Freelancer To Scalable Business OwnerThis week I'll sit down with NYC music industry veteran, Josh Margolis, and retrace the steps of his path from freelance musician, to becoming the founder of the Gowanus Music Club. We'll discuss the transition from "owning" your own job, to running a scalable business. Segment 1Jeremiah opens up with a quote about how entrepreneurs become entrepreneurs to serve/help people. Jeremiah then introduces his guest of the week, musician, Josh Margolis. In regards to the quote, the gentlemen began to talk about Social Entrepreneurship. Josh mentions a book he read in which he learned that running a business should also include a culture of happiness. The conversation continues with a discussion about making your staff happy at all times. The gentlemen both agree that when you have happy employees, they work happy, and that translates into happy customers/clients. Segment 2This segment opens with a song from Josh Margolis. Josh talks about how the track came together. He then talks about his upcoming shows and where we can find tickets. Josh goes back and discusses the track, what it's about and the importance of it. Next, Josh talks about his upbringing which included his sisters, musical influences, and his parents. Josh talks about one of his biggest musical influences as a child. He also believes that when you are younger, you are more receptive and open to new things. The segment ends with Josh talking about how his parents gave him his creative edge. Segment 3We open with another track from Josh. Josh talks about the track, the writers, and the production. He talks about his music program, Gowanus Music Club. The GMC program has been around for 14years. The program teaches kids about composing music, writing music, and music production. Josh talks of how once he had his daughter, he realized he wanted to do more with his life. He then got an opportunity to teach a child how to play drums. From then on, he eventually founded to GMC. He says he had to get out of his comfort zone in order to succeed. He talks of how the realization of wanting to do more, made him also want to help people. For Josh, music is amazing, however, helping others is a bigger reward. Segment 4The conversation picks right up by both guys discussing how they “fell backwards” into their life of entrepreneurship. Both guys talk about raising their kids in Brooklyn. The guys begin to talk about things they have in common; which includes playing the drums. Josh believes drums can be an outlet for so many emotions. Jeff believes that playing the drums can be healing. Josh ends the segment by informing the audience about the future of GMC and upcoming programs/shows.In the long term future he wants to create a music label and have his student's music playing on major streaming platforms. When I was a kid it was easy to smell a snow storm coming, or to be able to feel how the wind shifted and the light in the sky meant that you’d better take cover as a thunderstorm was maybe, if you were lucky, 20 minutes away. Us humans have the ability to sense deeply. And if you don’t’ think that’s true, reflect on the last time you knew there was trouble in your relationship, but when you probed your partner said, “nothing.” Us humans have extraordinary abilities to sense deeply. Actually, these abilities are not extraordinary, they are just not in this day and time ordinarily used. As conventional medicine relies on the “evidence based” objective tests, and we in the Chinese medicine community have our own questions, theories and processes that prescribe how we use our sensing to determine what is going on for our patients. In this conversation we go deeply into sensing. Into trusting our first impressions, and how listening attentively with our touch and presence can lead us to places where our patients need attention, even if they are not themselves aware of it. And even if it at first makes no sense to us either. Listen into this conversation that explores the crossroads of Chinese medicine and old-school osteopathy. Head on over to the show notes page for more information about this episode and for links to the resources discussed in the interview.
