Arthur Jeffes of Penguin Café, Johnny Borrell, Douglas Dare and Judi Jackson discuss taking your own music seriously when starting out, selling out, and whether it's OK to re-hash your previous work.Musician, composer and band leader Arthur Jeffes formed Penguin Cafe in 2009, bringing together a talented and disparate group of musicians initially to perform his father Simon Jeffes' legacy of world renowned Penguin Cafe Orchestra music, 12 years after his untimely death in 1997. Since then, they have continued to perform the music of Penguin Cafe Orchestra alongside their own compositions, and have released five albums to date. The most recent, Rain Before Seven…, came out in the summer.Douglas Dare's piano-led music creates an elegant minimalist sound. In 2020, he released his third album, Milkteeth.British musician Johnny Borrell is best known as the frontman of the band Razorlight. Their manager went to prison and the label folded the day before they were due to go into Abbey Road. Despondent and shell shocked, Pete went back to the drawing board, eventually finding success with The Boy Least Likely To. Until the summer of 2023, Pete had totally forgotten about the song "I Can't Love You Anymore". But his Mum, responding to a “Any requests?” post he put out on instagram, asked him to perform it again. It got him thinking. First he thought it would be a nice thing to do for his Mum and step Dad, it had always been one of their favourites. Then he added it to his live set and started developing and updating it and in the process totally reconnected with the song and who he was when he wrote it. “It's very strange to go back and inhabit something you created 25 years ago. Much more emotional than I had anticipated. It's almost impossible not to compare myself now to who I was then. Have I done ok? Have I achieved what I set out to? What would the younger me think of me now? I Can't Love You Anymore was released on 3rd Nov 2023, Pete now uses the moniker Diving At Dawn.... Graham catches up with him for My Music

Jules talks about their first gig, taking a leap of faith committing his time and energies to the orchestra and a memorable early touring experience to Montreaux with a bus load of overexcited students.Jules also chats about the joy of working with BBCSO where he is Creative Artist in Association and what this role entails. He and Verity share a brief reminiscence of their time at GSMD, along with some of the interesting characters encountered there. He tells them about a cringeworthy exchange with Razorlight's Johnny Borrell and some chance encounters that led to great things.Seb and Verity ask Jules about his upcoming gig at the Barbican with Father John Misty and the Britten Sinfonia, and there is an awkward moment where it appears that `Jules has terminated the call after Seb angles for tickets.....listen until the end to see how that plays out!Find out more about Jules on his website https://www.julesbuckley.com You can learn about Heritage Orchestra at http://www.the heritage orchestra.com/ and Metropole Orkest - where Jules is Honorary conductor https://www.mo.nl/en/the-orchestraThis episode is fuelled by Chimney Fire Coffee who have sponsored this podcast. We had the pleasure of interviewing Electric Enemy over Zoom video! Buzzing out of the London, England rock scene, Electric Enemy have shared their new single “Sweet Tooth” out today via Circular Wave. The single immediately draws in the listener with a blistering guitar line and singer Jim Lawson's distinctive voice before heading into a dreamy, melodic break and then picking right back up again. Centered around love, and lust, at first sight, the lyrics dive into the rush of being completely captivated by another person. “Sweet Tooth” was recorded at Fish Factory Studios with the band's long-time collaborator, friend and producer Sam Miller (Alberta Cross, Razorlight), working together to create a sound that is vintage and modern at the same time. The video for the track takes on this same feel, winding through a whirlwind of color, polaroids, and performance shots that match the energy of the song. Sitting somewhere between the classic rock of the Foo Fighters and newer acts like Des Rocs and Royal Blood, Electric Enemy are setting out to make rock music with a mission that truly feels “electric”. Combining introspective lyrics with compelling melodies and dynamic musicianship, the band has cracked a formula that has made them a need to know act in the UK and beyond. Singles “Voices” (2021) and “Heartache Melody” (2022) have already given the band a taste of streaming success and BBC Radio 1 host Jack Saunders noted “There's something in the water here.” “Sweet Tooth” marks the fourth single from a series of releases that will combine to form an EP set for release this Spring and the band is already hard at work on their first full-length. Electric Enemy is James “Jim“ Lawton (vocals and guitar), Orlando Formaro (lead guitar), and Thomas “Tom“ Romer-Smith (drums). We want to hear from you! Welcome to summer 2006! And things were, indeed, Crazy. That top selling nine-week run at No1 was significant for not just featuring (the not crime fighting rodent) Dangermouse but for being the first UK chart topper to make it there purely on downloads (remember them?) alone. But of course, you knew that chart fact already, didn't you, pop pickers? But there is so much more to rediscover on NOW 64, as we dive back amongst those shiny cover surf boards to ride the crest of this noughties pop wave. Classic Pop writer, journalist and all-round (indie) pop kid John Earls guides us through the hits and otherwise across these two CDs. Where to begin? There's the solid gold pop classics thanks to Nelly Furtardo, Lily Allen, Sugababes and Rihanna; those young cavalier guitar heroes (can we say indie?) The Kooks, Razorlight and The Zutons, and a plethora (the correct collective noun) of outrageous dance covers that certainly signalled that the eighties were back! What was going on? Ask James Morrison – whilst stuck at the end of CD2, he was quietly inventing the next decade! As Top of The Pops turned off the lights for the final time, the singles charts were undergoing some strange times for sure. Could those CD singles (and B-sides!) really be on their way out too?And don't forget the all-conquering celebrity Big Brother winner Preston and the Ordinary Boys (and Lady Sovereign!) Could there BE a more 2006 sentence? Also starring P!nk, Keane, (Sir) Tom Jones, the ‘efficient' Will.I.Am, Izzy from Neighbours (thanks to Elvis Costello!) and (very briefly, thankfully) Matt Willis and Fall Out Boy. We even find time to chat Blossoms/Rick Astley! How on earth did we get there, I hear you (possibly) ask? Tune in to find out!And finally, discover why Shapeshifters (but not Nile Rodgers) won't be returning our Christmas cards.Phew! Trust us, there is a lot more to summer 2006 and NOW 64 than you may think. Dive back in! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
