This week, we bring you highlights from the first hour of our live broadcast from the Louisville VegFest on Saturday, September 6th, 2025, noon-6pm, at the Mellwood Art Center! Again this year, Forward Radio was a proud media sponsor of Louisville VegFest —Kentucky's premier celebration of all things vegan! Admission is FREE to over 19,000 sq ft of indoor space, with additional food trucks and select vendors bringing the fun outside, too! Formerly known as Bluegrass VegFest, this all-vegan, community-focused event highlights the joy of plant-based eating and conscious, sustainable living. Visitors enjoyed delicious food from regional restaurants and food trucks, craft beer and cocktails, inspiring speaker talks, a live cooking demo, an amazing lineup of vendors, kids' activities, educational exhibits, and so much more. Learn more at https://vegkentucky.org/vegfest Our first speaker of the day was Kennedy Little from the Food Empowerment Project. Kennedy Little from Lexington is a senior pursuing pre-Law and Agribusiness with a minor in Public Administration at Morehead State University. After going vegan in 2019, Kennedy began to use her background in agriculture organizing to help change the unethical norms many agriculture workers face. Kennedy works as a Youth Advocacy Team Member for the vegan and food justice nonprofit known as the Food Empowerment Project. On the evening of August 19th, 2025 at the Filson Historical Society, Dr. David Narrett, professor of history at the University of Texas at Arlington, led a compelling discussion of his latest work, The Cherokees in War & Peace, which traces the Cherokee tribe's resilience from early English contact to the Trail of Tears. Through vivid personal stories, the book reveals how the Cherokees overcame immense challenges to forge a unified nation. This conversation explores a powerful story of survival and perseverance through a thoughtful discussion. Presented by the Filson as a part of the James J. Holmberg Lecture Series. The evening began with an introduction by the Filson's CEO, Patrick Lewis. Learn more at https://filsonhistorical.org Watch a recording of the evening at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lOlmJuOFuWs The Filson and Forward Radio are located on the ancestral homeland of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee, the Osage Nation, and the Shawnee (including the Absentee-Shawnee Tribe, the Eastern Shawnee Tribe, and the Shawnee Tribe), who suffered genocide and forced displacement from these lands. We give thanks for the longstanding relationship that Indigenous Nations have to this land and seek to learn from it in order to heal our own broken relationship with the land. We lament the historical and ongoing injustices that black, indigenous, and people of color endure in this country and around the world. May our words and deeds reflect this reality and contribute to fostering more respectful relationships. Learn more about native lands at https://native-land.ca. On this week's program, we bring you a community conversation about the environmental impacts of Kentucky's aluminum industry brought to you by the Kentucky Chapter of the Sierra Club (https://sierraclub.org/kentucky). Because aluminum is lightweight, durable, and highly recyclable, it's a key ingredient in solar panels and wind turbines, more efficient cars and planes, and construction and packaging materials. Demand for the metal is set to skyrocket, bolstering the hopes of companies and policymakers for a U.S. industrial turnaround. As aluminum gains the spotlight, the negative impacts of its production are also becoming more apparent. Sierra Club Kentucky has been collaborating with the Environmental Integrity Project (EIP), a national organization that ensures the enforcement of laws protecting clean air and water (https://www.environmentalintegrity.org). As the demand for aluminum grows — in particular for use in clean energy and transportation — EIP and other environmental groups are taking action so that aluminum producing companies will reduce the harm they cause to communities and the environment. Two of the seven U.S. aluminum smelters are in Kentucky: Century Sebree in Henderson County and Century Hawesville in Hancock County. Both facilities have violated air and water standards many times. In 2021, the Environmental Protection Agency determined that Sebree smelter was largely to blame for excessive levels of the area's releases of sulfur dioxide, a very harmful pollutant. Unfortunately, the KY Department of Environmental Protection has missed a required deadline to submit a plan to solve this problem, and EPA has missed a deadline to address the state's failure. EIP is interested in sharing information with Western Kentucky residents and learning about any concerns you may have with air and water quality in the area and the impacts of aluminum production. EIP and Sierra Club held this online information meeting on January 17, 2024 featuring speakers Nadia Steinzor and Sunny Lee of the Environmental Integrity Project. Do any of us really care about truth when it comes to politics? Should we? In a world of big lies, denialism, and conspiracy theories, democracies are experiencing two interlocked crises: a loss of confidence in democracy itself and the growing sense among many that politics is only about power—not truth. In his new book, Michael Patrick Lynch argues that truth not only can—but must—matter in politics. He shows why truth is an essential democratic value—a value we need to sustain our democratic way of life—and how it can be strengthened. Despite evidence that people are rarely motivated by truth when it comes to politics, Lynch argues that this isn't inevitable. Contrary to the belief of many, political beliefs can be true or false. But if democracy is to continue to be a space of reason and not just an arena of power, we must build a better infrastructure of knowledge, including stronger schools and media, and renew our commitment to science and history. Michael Patrick Lynch is Provost Professor of the Humanities and Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Connecticut. Lynch is the author or editor of ten books, including Know-it-All Society, The Internet of Us, Truth as One and Many, and the New York TimesSunday Book Review Editor's pick, True to Life. He has spoken at TED and SXSW. In 2019 he was awarded The George Orwell Award, which recognizes writers who have made outstanding contributions to the critical analysis of public discourse. His new book is On Truth in Politics: Why Democracy Demands It.

If you came expecting a neat keynote, you were in for something else entirely. What he gave us instead in fourteen minutes was part sermon, part therapy, and part existential gut check for anyone shaping the future. Here's what stuck:“This isn't a rehearsal.”Fred opened with vulnerability: standing in front of his peers, in a room that lives and breathes venture, ready to say the uncomfortable things. He asked us to zoom out—to consider the power we hold as people who don't just fund companies but shape the narratives that shape the future.“We sit in the cockpit alongside the founders. That's where creation happens now. That's our canvas.”But with that power comes disorientation. Because the world we're building into? It's fragmented. Conflicted. Loaded with moral confusion. On Truth, Power, and the Collapse of Shared NarrativesFred pulled no punches.“Historically, we had shared systems for truth. Religion. Philosophy. Math. But now? Everything's been deconstructed. Lived experience replaced truth. Everything's power.”Welcome to the legacy of critical theory. Foucault, Derrida—ideas that once helped explain systems of oppression have now left us with... nothing to agree on.“We're left in a nihilistic landscape. Everything is a power struggle. There's no shared center.”And it's not just academic. It unfolds in cycles of outrage, weaponized identities, and moral ambiguity. Tech doesn't escape this, it amplifies it.The Algorithm Doesn't Care About Truth“We thought more information meant more truth. It doesn't.”Truth, Fred reminded us, is costly. Outrage is cheap. And platforms optimize for what's fast, not what's real.“A four-second tweet can destroy someone's life. Investigative journalism takes months.”Now, enter AI. Beautiful, powerful—and deeply destabilizing.“We're staring at it like it's the sun or a cobra. We don't know what it is yet. But it's changing the rules faster than we can track.”The Danger of Playing Games We Don't Know We're InA warning:You may think you're being righteous. You may think you're being helpful.“But maybe you're playing a social game. Maybe you're being used. And maybe you don't even know it.”In a world where narratives shift daily, we often end up reinforcing the very dynamics we oppose.“You want to call out a Nazi salute online? Be careful. You might just normalize the thing you hate.”So Where Does That Leave Us?In a word: Stewardship.Fred closed with a challenge:“This is the most powerful tool mankind has ever created. What the fuck are we doing with it?”We're not just funding innovation. We're authoring meaning. In an anxious world, that's a profound responsibility. One Last Question (That Stuck With Us All)“What is the quality of the conversation we're having?”With ourselves. With each other. With our founders. With the world.Because if we don't ask that, the rest doesn't matter.

On today's show, we listen in on a very timely community conversation hosted on January 14th, 2025 with the Oberlin Club of Washington, DC, focused on the question: "Why is the working-class leaving the Democratic Party?" The conversation featured remarks by Les Leopold, Executive Director of The Labor Institute, and a 1969 graduate of Oberlin College. You can watch the full event and see the slides at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThOll28AuYY In assessing the 2024 elections, many voters are asking: has the working-class abandoned the Democratic Party? If so, why? What does that tell us about the views of working people and what does that suggest about the Party and its future? There are two major theories to account for the extensive working-class shift to the Republicans since 1996. One argument rooted in social issues is that working-class resentment against women, immigrants, LBGTQ+ communities and other ""woke"" concerns has resulted in an embrace of right-wing candidates whose supporters Hillary Clinton once termed "a basket of deplorables". The other theory is that economic issues like job insecurity, stagnant wages and declining prospects for the future have pushed workers away from the Democrats. What does the data reveal? Les Leopold offers an assessment based on findings in his latest book "Wall Street's War on Workers: How Mass Layoffs and Greed Are Destroying the Working Class and What to Do About It." Les Leopold co-founded and currently directs The Labor Institute, a non-profit organization that designs research and educational programs on occupational safety and health, the environment and economics for unions, workers centers and community organizations. In addition to "Wall Street's War on Workers," he is the author of "Defiant German, Defiant Jew"; "Runaway Inequality"; "How to Make a Million Dollars an Hour: Why Financial Elites get away with siphoning off America's Wealth"; "The Looting of America: How Wall Street's Game of Fantasy Finance destroyed our Jobs, Pensions and Prosperity, and What We Can Do About It"; and "The Man Who Hated Work and Loved Labor: The Life and Times of Tony Mazzocchi." Les graduated from Oberlin with a degree in Government and earned an MPA from Princeton University's School of Public and International Affairs.
