Truth to Power | Les Leopold | The Labor Institute | Dems Losing the Working Class | 1-17-25

On today's show, we listen in on a very timely community conversation hosted on January 14th, 2025 with the Oberlin Club of Washington, DC, focused on the question: "Why is the working-class leaving the Democratic Party?" The conversation featured remarks by Les Leopold, Executive Director of The Labor Institute, and a 1969 graduate of Oberlin College. You can watch the full event and see the slides at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ThOll28AuYY In assessing the 2024 elections, many voters are asking: has the working-class abandoned the Democratic Party? If so, why? What does that tell us about the views of working people and what does that suggest about the Party and its future? There are two major theories to account for the extensive working-class shift to the Republicans since 1996. One argument rooted in social issues is that working-class resentment against women, immigrants, LBGTQ+ communities and other ""woke"" concerns has resulted in an embrace of right-wing candidates whose supporters Hillary Clinton once termed "a basket of deplorables". The other theory is that economic issues like job insecurity, stagnant wages and declining prospects for the future have pushed workers away from the Democrats. What does the data reveal? Les Leopold offers an assessment based on findings in his latest book "Wall Street's War on Workers: How Mass Layoffs and Greed Are Destroying the Working Class and What to Do About It." Les Leopold co-founded and currently directs The Labor Institute, a non-profit organization that designs research and educational programs on occupational safety and health, the environment and economics for unions, workers centers and community organizations. In addition to "Wall Street's War on Workers," he is the author of "Defiant German, Defiant Jew"; "Runaway Inequality"; "How to Make a Million Dollars an Hour: Why Financial Elites get away with siphoning off America's Wealth"; "The Looting of America: How Wall Street's Game of Fantasy Finance destroyed our Jobs, Pensions and Prosperity, and What We Can Do About It"; and "The Man Who Hated Work and Loved Labor: The Life and Times of Tony Mazzocchi." Les graduated from Oberlin with a degree in Government and earned an MPA from Princeton University's School of Public and International Affairs. On Truth to Power each week, we gather people from around the community to discuss the state of the world, the nation, the state, and the city! It's a community conversation like you won't hear anywhere else! On this week's program, we bring you some highlights from the 2024 Environmental Justice Conference hosted by the West Jefferson County Community Task Force (WJCCTF) on Saturday, Oct. 19th, 9am - 3pm, at the University Club at the University of Louisville and online. Funding for this free public conference was provided by the Environmental Protection Agency RATHA Grant and the Louisville and Kentucky Branch of the NAACP. The Theme of this 8th Annual Conference was “Environmental Health: Knowledge Is Power.” Participants enjoyed a day of information with opportunities to ask questions concerning the three-year Rubbertown Air Toxics and Health Assessment (RATHA) research grant funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), learned about other topics of environmental interest, and participated in an Environmental Roundtable. The research partners for the RATHA grant include the West Jefferson County Community Task Force in collaboration with the Air Pollution Control District, the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute of UofL, the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness, and the Park DuValle Community Health Center. EJ Groups, Concerned Citizens, and Residents of West Louisville neighborhoods and areas near Rubbertown are encouraged to work together to address air toxics and their impact on our health. This week, we hear from two of the day's speakers: - Dr. Ted Smith, UofL professor of Environmental Medicine & Director of the Christina Lee Brown Envirome Institute's Center for Healthy Air, Water and Soil. - Rachel Hamilton, Director of Metro Louisville Air Pollution Control District (APCD) Community participation is critical to this three-year research project's success. We need to hear your voices about environmental concerns. Stay Engaged and Informed! We hope that you will join us at future WJCCTF environmental events. This week's show is all about birds and our role in protecting them! The Louisville Audubon Society (https://www.louisvilleaudubon.org/) reminds you that peak Fall Bird Migration occurs from August to October. Please consider participating in LIGHTS OUT LOUISVILLE to make your home, neighborhood, and our city more bird-friendly; and join us for the Louisville Audubon Society's launch event of Lights Out Louisville at the Main Branch of the Louisville Free Public Library at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024. (The event is free, but space is limited; so register at https://www.lfpl.org/events/23463) WHAT IT IS: Lights Out Louisville is a Louisville Audubon conservation program intended to minimize light pollution in our city to protect migrating birds during key months and times every spring and fall. WHY IT MATTERS: Millions—even billions—of birds are killed each year in the U.S. due to collisions with artificially lit buildings as they migrate over cities, including Louisville. By minimizing light pollution from residential and commercial structures, our city joins the growing international effort to reduce these numbers. WHY YOU SHOULD CARE: Creating bird-friendly communities by going Lights Out benefits us all, from commercial real estate owners/operators to local businesses and residents. Benefits include energy cost savings, contributions to Louisville's sustainability and conservation goals, and more. AT THE EVENT: Attendees will learn more about this initiative, view a short documentary about a Lights Out success story, and have the opportunity to ask a panel of Kentucky-based experts questions on light pollution and energy efficiency. → CAN'T MAKE THE EVENT? YOU CAN STILL SHOW SUPPORT! • Your organization can join this local conservation effort—it's as easy as flipping a switch. • Pledge to go Lights Out from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m., every night in April and May, and in September and October. Individuals and Homeowners pledge at https://www.lightsoutlouisville.org/residents-homeowners-pledge-to-go-lights-out/ Businesses and Organizations pledge at https://www.lightsoutlouisville.org/buildings_commercial-pledge-to-go-lights-out/ • Contact the Louisville Audubon Society (louisvilleaudubon@gmail.com) for more information or to discuss future partnerships and events. With your support, we can make a difference in our city, and the world, by minimizing needless bird injuries and deaths, reducing energy use, and protecting views of the night sky. Forward Radio was a proud media sponsor of this year's VegFest, providing wall-to-wall live coverage. Tune in for a sample of Kentuckiana's Largest Vegan Food Festival - a free public event produced by Bluegrass Veg, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, featuring 30,000 sq ft of marketplace halls at the Mellwood Art Center. Learn more at https://bluegrassvegfest.com In this third hour of our broadcast, we caught up with some of the plant-based vendors, including learning about vegan kefir with KFR, and the latest innovations coming from Louisville Vegan Jerky in Shelby Pakr. We also bring you the incredible insights of keynote speaker, bestselling author, animal advocate, and founder of Main Street Vegan Academy, Victoria Moran. Victoria has been vegan for 40 years and is the author of twelve books including the iconic Main Street Vegan and the international bestseller, Creating a Charmed Life. She hosts the Main Street Vegan Podcast and the Main Street Vegan Salon, streaming on UnchainedTV. Victoria is also the founder and director of Main Street Vegan Academy, training vegan lifestyle coaches and educators since 2012. She appeared twice on Oprah, was voted Peta's Sexiest Vegan Over 50 in 2016, and long ago before either was even vegetarian, Paul McCartney bought Victoria a drink. On Truth to Power each week, we gather people from around the community to discuss the state of the world, the nation, the state, and the city! Truth to Power airs every Friday at 9pm, Saturday at 11am, and Sunday at 4pm on Louisville's grassroots, community radio station, Forward Radio 106.5fm WFMP and live streams at forwardradio.org
