Welcome to a soulful episode of Rock is Lit. If you've got a hankering for that sweet soul music—the kind that echoes with the sounds of Otis Redding, Al Green, Sly & The Family Stone, and Aretha Franklin—then you're in for a treat. My fellow Tar Heel native Michael Parker is here to talk about his novel ‘If You Want Me to Stay', a story in which 14-year-old narrator Joel Dunn, Jr., takes us on a poignant odyssey. Joel, Jr., shares the heartfelt tale of salvaging his family in the aftermath of his mother's departure and his father's unraveling sanity. From the rural landscapes of eastern North Carolina to the coastal vistas, Joel and his little brother Tank embark on a journey guided by junk food and the soulful melodies their daddy taught them to love. Michael Parker is the author of three collections of short stories and seven other novels, including his most recent, 2022's ‘I Am the Light of This World'. He is a three-time winner of the O. Henry Award for short fiction and winner of the 2020 Thomas Wolfe Award. Michael has taught for almost 30 years in the MFA program at UNC-G. What is it about some songs that make them stick in your head like epoxy? This one isn't even really a song, it's just a riff (I guess in this it shares that distinction with an earlier SUNNY SONGS episode, Archie Bell's “Tighten Up”), and, it's also got that spoken shout out: “Hey Leroy! Your mama… she callin' you, man!” Then the cackling laughter, and the bursting into a driving, urgent Latin Soul chant “Go to your mama”, (led by a skittering, syncopated cowbell). It's just infectious wonderfulness, which culminates in Jimmy's signature sax, bringing us on home as the record fades out. As kids, we would tease each other with the “Leroy” line, and have a fine time, running across streets and yards, madly dashing after each other: “Hey, Leroy! Your mama… She MAD, man!” 56 years later, while compiling a list of songs that make me feel instantly good, this one came scampering back, unbidden, from deep down the recesses of my befuddled brain to make the roster. Jimmy Castor started off his career in the doo-wop group, FRANKIE LYMON AND THE TEENAGERS. The difference was that Jimmy was not simply a harmonizer, he was a writer, a self-generating machine of catchy content, so, inevitably, he stepped up to the front of his own outfit, The Jimmy Castor Bunch, and released a raft of memorable material to the world - perhaps most notably “Troglodyte”, a national Funk hit in the 70s, making it to number 6 in the charts. You might remember its chant: “Gotta Get a Woman, Gotta Get a woman…” I don't know what it is about this record, but could it be - (and, this might be a stretch) - that there is a little bit of “Leroy” in all of us: we all have mothers, and we all go through that period when were pushing away, but still a bit tied to the apron strings? Well… no need to overthink it. It's just a riff, after all.

Today we're sharing a track from London post-punk electro-crew MADMADMAD's double A-side single “Do You,” recorded in the band's experimental warehouse testing ground. MADMADMAD offer this insight: "It's about being yourself without asking permission. It's a hypnotic, dance floor-ready anthem that makes you want to let the goof out, in a playful invitation to dance your troubles away, like Archie Bell beaming from darker space. A deranged sonic ride with an irresistible feel-good factor."
"Marijuana Magic: Enhancing Exercise and Easing PainLarry Mishkin discusses the debut of the song "Sugaree" by the Grateful Dead, sharing interesting facts about its origins and performance history. Additionally, he presents three stories from Marijuana Moment, highlighting how medical marijuana is linked to reduced pain and lower opioid dependency in chronic pain patients, enhances the runner's high and reduces pain during exercise, and improves the quality of life for military veterans while reducing their prescription drug use. It's the first off-planet automobile ride. Rumor has it that sometime during the show, Jerry stopped playing, pointed to the moon, and said, “just think, right now there are men sleeping on THAT” Confession, I listened to almost the entire show and was not able to locate that moment so I cannot confirm Jerry said it, but it sounds like something he might say and either way is just another cool Dead story to pass along. INTRO: Sugaree Track No. 3 Start – 1:14 Sugaree" is a song with lyrics by long-time Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter and music by guitaristJerry Garcia.[1] It was written for Jerry Garcia's first solo album Garcia, which was released in January 1972. As with the songs on the rest of the album, Garcia plays every instrument himself except drums, played by Bill Kreutzmann, including acoustic guitar, bass guitar, and an electric guitar played through a Leslie speaker. Released as a single from the Garcia album, "Sugaree" peaked at #94 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1972 and was Garcia's only single ever on that chart.[2]The song was first performed live by the Grateful Dead on July 31, 1971, at the Yale Bowl at Yale University,Even though it was on Jerry's solo album, it was clearly a Dead song from the start and here it is debuted by the Dead six months before the Garcia album's release. Maybe not the best version ever, but it is the first. Ultimately played 361 times by the Dead. Last played on July 8, 1995, the penultimate Dead show Always one of good buddy Mikey's favorite Dead songs, “What's shaking Sugaree?”. Shout out to Mikey, Alex, Andy, Lynn, Harold who just saw Tedeschi Truck this past weekend at Red Rocks. My wife and I had to miss it this year, but I know they all rocked out. And, they were joined by Lori and Monte, more good Chicago friends, and Lori was part of the group at the Joanie Jam with Judy and Andy. So lots of great musical cross relationships developing all the time. THAT IS WHY WE GO TO SHOWS! SHOW #1: Mr. Charlie Track No. 4 Start – 1:15 This is also the breakout version of this song. It was played a total of 50 times after its debut on 7/31/71 in New Haven, the same show at which Sugaree debuted. It was played at all 22 shows of the Europe '72 tour, including its last performance on May 26, 1972 at the Lyceum Ballroom in London, the last show of that famous tour. Lyrics by Robert Hunter, music by Pigpen. It was Pig's song and as his time in the band dwindled, so did some of his tunes. No post-Pig resurrection of the song by the band.Never released on a studio album, there are rumors of a planned album following Workingman's and American Beauty that would have included this song as well as Bertha, He's Gone, Loser, Brown Eyed Women, Ramble on Rose, Tennessee Jed, The Stranger (Two Souls in Communion), etc. Might have even been enough tunes for a double album. Story is that the Dead abandoned it when they decided to get out of their Warner Bros. record deal. SHOW #2: Hard to Handle Track No. 12 Start – 1:06 "Hard to Handle" is a 1968 song written by American soul singer Otis Redding along with Al Bell and Allen Jones. Originally recorded by Redding, it was released in 1968 as the B-side to "Amen" (shortly after the singer's sudden death in 1967). The song also appears on the 1968 album The Immortal Otis Redding. Redding's version reached number 38 on the Billboard R&B chart and number 51 on the pop chart.[1]American rock band the Black Crowes covered the song for their 1990 debut album, Shake Your Money Maker, reaching number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100 with their rendition.Hard To Handle was performed by the Grateful Dead about 90 times between March 15, 1969 at the Black and White Ball, opened the show with it (The ball is the Bay Area's largest black-tie street party and a tradition since 1956 - a night for high society and just plain folks to mingle in gowns and tuxedoes around Civic Center Plaza to listen to music. ) and August 1971. It was subsequently performed only twice, on December 30 and 31, 1982, with Etta James taking the vocals and support from the Tower of Power horns.Another fun Pig lead that, like most of his other songs, died with him. SHOW #3: Sugar Magnolia Track No. 24 3:10 – 4:23Still relatively new in the Dead's repertoire, I like the musical jam in this version and so does the crowd. We all know the lyrics but it is this kind of jamming that made this a Dead standard and favorite among Deadheads. This version is still early enough that it appears in the middle of the second set, not yet having moved to its almost always spot as a second set closer. Always sad when they get to the obvious set closer, but when it was Sugar Mag we all felt a lot better. Notes from Deadheads mentioned this as one of the highlights of the show. SHOW #4: Darkness Jam Track No. 28 0:56 – 2:06the 'Darkness' jam from the 1969 Youngbloods song, Darkness, Darkness which was done a few times in 1970; the most well-known version is in the 9/19/70 Not Fade Away where it's very clear. (They also do the China Cat riff in that NFA, which they did frequently (and at greater length) in the fall of 1971.). Played 4 times by the Dead in concert. This is the LAST one. Darkness Darkness - Darkness, Darkness" is a song written by Jesse Colin Young in 1969, which has been covered by many artists. Young's band The Youngbloods released a version on their 1969 album Elephant Mountain. They released a version of the song as a single twice: in 1969, which reached #124 on the Billboard chart,[1] and in 1970, which reached #86 on the chart.[2] One of the various themed jams played by the Dead in their early years also including:Feelin' Groovy Jam - is basically four chords based on the 1966 Simon & Garfunkel song, and was frequently done in Dark Stars from '69-'72.Tighten Up Jam - The Tighten Up jam was a very common Latin-style jam theme in 1970. It's often called a proto-Eyes jam since Weir plays two repeating jazzy chords that are rhythmically similar to the opening of Eyes of the World; but they were commonly thought to be from Archie Bell & the Drells' 1968 tune.Mind Left Body Jam: The Mind Left Body jam originated in the Planet Earth Rock n Roll Orchestra (PERRO) sessions (The Planet Earth Rock and Roll Orchestra (PERRO) is a nickname given to some artists who recorded together in the early 1970s.[1] They were predominantly members of Jefferson Airplane, the Grateful Dead, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young .[2] ), where we can hear an early, faster version of the four descending chords. Paul Kantner took this riff for his 1973 song 'Your Mind Has Left Your Body,' which Garcia played pedal steel on. Garcia in turn adapted it into a Grateful Dead theme, which first showed up on occasion in '72, but started regularly entering the jams in fall '73. It added a transcendental feeling to many shows up through '74Spanish Jam: Weir based the Spanish Jam on the song 'Solea' on Miles Davis' album Sketches of Spain, sometime in late '67 when the Dead started recording Anthem of the Sun. As it was, a little bit of the Spanish Jam actually got on the album, in the form of a short Davis-flavored trumpet break from Phil in the middle of Born Cross-Eyed (after the verse, "Think I'll come back here again, every now and then, from time to time"). For a moment, it seems like Garcia and the band are about to break into the Spanish Jam, but they quickly cut back to the song.... OUTRO: Uncle John's Band Track No. 30 1:28 – 2:44 An early version of an all time classic. Already a crowd favorite, clapping, sing along. Can't go wrong with an Uncle John's Band at the end of a show – actually closed out with Johnny B. Goode – no encore. Other great stories of this show at Yale, runs in with the cops, gate crashers, gallons of electric Kool Aid at the gates. Just another typical Dead show, but at one of the country's most prestigious schools. Even the Ivies loved the Dead. Still working on stories John Mayer says goodbye: “These tours with @deadandcompany exist on an almost otherworldly plane – everyone, on stage and in the crowd, meets up in this shared dream, and on the last night, after the final note is struck, we leave it all on the stage. We bow, we hug, we share our love for one another and then… we disappear. I fly through the dead of night and wake up at home, where my ears ring, my heart sings, and I'm left with this mix of fatigue, joy, accomplishment, and deep appreciation for what I was able to be a part of,” Mayer shared. “I can feel the connected, collective experience of thousands of others who wake up feeling the same. I'll never get over the profound beauty and uniqueness of this, and we'll never in our lifetime see the likes of @bobweir@mickeyhart and @billkreutzmann, playing beyond all perceived limitations and expectations. It's nothing short of remarkable. Thank you one and all for allowing me a seat on this transcendent ride. ” “Dead & Company is still a band – we just don't know what the next show will be,” Mayer wrote on social media. “I speak for us all when I say that I look forward to being shown the next shaft of light… I know we will all move towards it together.”
TIGHTEN UP by Archie Bell and the Drells (Atlantic, 1968)Tighten up isn't really a song at all (even though it's listed as #265 on Rolling Stone's list of the Top 500 Songs of All Time). It's a riff, a groove, a vibe - and it's FUCKIN' AWESOME. It also made it to number one on both the R&B and Pop Charts of 1968. Some people say it was the beginning of funk - maybe so, I don't know, but, whatever it was, it activated my pleasure center intensely. When Archie says: “Make it mellow,” time stops, and the band goes into slow motion. It's my favorite part of the record. But, of course, you can't have the mellow riff without the contrast of the funky, (like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup) and this is a secret weapon that captures my heart every time. There is some chanting, but no melody, no tune, just Archie's spoken word introduction, telling you who the band is and where they hail from: Houston, Texas. Legend has it that after the Kennedy assassination, Archie Bell overheard someone say that “nothing ever good comes from Texas,” and this was his inspiration: to tell everybody that The Drells came from Texas, and “we were good.”I've got to give you that, Archie. Tighten Up preceded the advent of the Walkman, but to this 15 year old — I didn't need any electronic device to access that riff while I was bopping down the boulevard. It played in my head on a loop, and guided my street shuffle right in tempo.

Episode 89 The Theremin Part 2: Recordings After 1970 Playlist Ultimate Spinach, “(Ballad of The) Hip Death Goddess” from Ultimate Spinach (1968 MGM Records). This American psychedelic rock band was from Boston, Massachusetts, although they had a sound that had more an affinity with the free spirit of San Francisco. The Theremin has a prominent part in this song, following the vocalist and filling in some interesting instrumental parts. Bass and Feedback, Richard Nese; Vocals, Drums, Tabla, Bass Drum, Bells, Chimes, Keith Lahteinen; Vocals, Electric Guitar, Guitar, Kazoo, Barbara Hudson; Vocals, Electric Piano, Electric Harpsichord, Organ, Harpsichord, Twelve-String Guitar, Sitar, Harmonica, Wood Flute, Theremin, Celesta, Ian Bruce-Douglas; Vocals, Lead Guitar, Guitar Feedback, Sitar Drone, Electric Sitar, Geoffrey Winthrop. 8:11 Hawkwind, “Paranoia Part 2” from Hawkwind (1970 Liberty). Hawkwind was a pioneering space-rock and psychedelic group from the UK. They were known to use a theremin during their early years—1969 to 1973 and revived its use on stage in later performances using a Moog Etherwave model in the 2000s. This first album features a theremin added to much of the sonic textures, sometimes overtly but often run through effects to provide a looming background, as in this song. It is sometimes difficult to distinguish, but I think there is a theremin providing some of the droning background and then sporadic bursts of tones beginning around 4:25. 14:54 McKendree Spring, “God Bless the Conspiracy” from 3 (1972 Decca). Electric Violin, Viola, Theremin, Michael Dreyfuss; Electronics (Ring Modulator), Tom Oberheim; Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Dulcimer, Fran McKendree; Electric Bass, Larry Tucker; Electric Guitar, Martin Slutsky. This progressive band with experimental leanings was a quartet without a drummer. Dreyfus later said, “In God Bless the Conspiracy and No Regrets I was able to play viola and Theremin at the same time by bringing my body closer to the Theremin (to change pitch) while playing a harmony part on the viola,”(2006). He played a Theremin beginning 1969. He may have used a Moog theremin, such as the Troubadour. 6:53 Linda Cohen, “Horizon Jane” from Lake Of Light (1973 Poppy). Folky album from Philadelphia featuring several electronic musicians. Acoustic Guitar, Bass, Piano, Polytonic Modulator, Jefferson Cain; Classical Guitar, Composer, Linda Cohen; Flute, Stan Slotter; Producer, Electric Guitar, Matrix Electronic Drums, Modulator, Sitar, Synthesizer, Craig Anderton; Minimoog, Theremin, Charles Cohen. 3:36 Ronnie Montrose, “Space Station #5” from Montrose (1973 Warner Brothers). Ronnie Montrose added a custom-built Theremin to his equipment with the pitch antenna mounted on his aluminum (silver) Velano guitar so that he could play both at the same time. Volume for the theremin was controlled by a black box mounted on a mike stand, to which he stood nearby. He was recording with it throughout the 1970s. Here is a great live clip you where you can see how he played it. Note the end of the clip where he put the theremin guitar up against the speaker and wails on the volume control of the theremin control box. Bass, Bill Church; Drums, Denny Carmassi; Guitar, Theremin-Guitar, Ronnie Montrose; Vocals, Sam Hagar. 5:36 Arthur Brown's Kingdom Come, “Time Captives” from Journey (1974 Passport). Fender Bass, Percussion, Vocals, Phil Shutt; Bentley Rhythm Ace, Vocals, Arthur Brown; Electric Guitar, Vocals, Andy Dalby; Mellotron, ARP 2600, EMS VCS 3, Piano, Theremin, Percussion, Vocals, Victor Peraino. 8:37 Michael Quatro, “Get Away” from In Collaboration with The Gods (1975 United Artists Records). Brother of Detroit rockers Suzi and Patti Quatro, he had a flare for progressive rock and electronic keyboards in the 1970s. The Theremin makes frequent appearances on this album, this track in particular. Arranger, Piano Baldwin, Electric Piano Gretsch Electro, Piano Tack Piano, Sonic Six Synthesizer, Effects Univox Phaser, Univox Stringman, EC-80 Echo, Elka Electric Piano, Hammond Organ, Minimoog Synthesizer, Univox Mini-Korg, Electroharmonix Boxes, Mellotron Violin, Cello, Flute, Effects Wah-Wah Pedals, Effects Syntha-Pedal, Bass Nova Bass, Horns, Organ Pipe Organ, Sounds Ring Modulation, Maestro Theremin, Electronic Effects, Percussion , Michael Quatro;Bass, Lead Vocals, Arranged By Arranging Assistance, Dave Kiswiney; Drums, Kirk (Arthur) Trachsel; Guitar, Teddy Hale. 4:04 Melodic Energy Commission, “Revise The Scene” from Stranger In Mystery (1979 Energy Discs). This is the first album from this Canadian space-rock, psychedelic and folk troupe from British Columbia. The Theremin was a key instrument in their ensemble and was custom-built by group member George McDonald. His Theremin would eventually be known as the Galactic Stream Theremin and would take some 25 years to build and evolve into a six antennae instrument for “tuning into the performers body motions.” During this recording, a simpler, more traditional version was used. Gas & Steam Bass, Bells, Tambourine, Mark Franklin; Dulcimer, Bowed Dulcimer, Khaen, Gongs, Flute, Randy Raine-Reusch; Hydro-electric Guitar, Custom-made Theremin, Aura, Wall Of Oscillation, George McDonald; Percussion, Tablas, Brass Tank, Glockenspiel, Roland SH5 Synthesizer, Organ, Paul Franklin; EMS Synthi AKS, Delatronics, Electric Guitar, Del Dettmar; Wordy Voice, Guitar, Piano, Organ, Roland SH 1000 Synthesizer, Gongs, Vibraphone, Kalimba, Stone Drum, Egyptian Shepherd's Pipe, Xaliman. 6:13 The Nihilist Spasm Band, “Elsinore” from Vol. 2 (1979 Music gallery Editions). Canadian group that used all hand-made instruments, including the kit-made Theremin by Bill Exley. Bass, Hugh McIntyre; Drums, Greg Curnoe; Guitar, John Clement, Murray Favro; Kazoo, John Boyle; Pratt-a-various, Art Pratten; Vocals, Theremin, Bill Exley. Cassette release from this space-rock band from the 1980s. Electric Guitar, Electronics, Tape, Ernie Falcone; Synthesizer, Theremin, Keyboards, Tom Fenwick. 5:03 Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, “Vacuum of Loneliness” from The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (1992 Caroline). TVox Tour model theremin, Lydia Kavina. Arranged, mixed, performed by Lydia Kavina. 8:11 Lydia Kavina, “Free Music #1,” composed by Percy Grainger from Music from The Ether, Original Works For Theremin (1999 Mode). TVox Tour model theremin, Lydia Kavina; mixed and spatialized, Steve Puntolillo. This work was originally written for theremin although Grainger had many ideas around how this type of “free music” should be played. This native Australian was fascinated by the sounds of the real world and invented a mechanical machine for making such sounds. In 1938, Grainger said, "...Out in nature we hear all kinds of lovely and touching 'free' (non-harmonic) combinations of tones, yet we are unable to take up these beauties and expressiveness into the art of music because of our archaic notions of harmony.” His adaptation of free music for theremin was an attempt to create sounds that were new to music. This version was multitracked by Kavina and an old acquaintance of mine, sound engineer Steve Puntolillo, to recreate the parts for four theremins. 1:19 The Kurstins, “Sunshine” from Gymnopedie (2000 Rouge Records). Composed by Roy Ayers; Minimoog, ARP String Ensemble, Organ, Guitar, Sampler, Drums, Rhodes Electric Piano, Greg Kurstin; Moog Theremin, Theremin Vocoder, Moogerfoogers, Pamelia Kurstin. 3:47 The Kurstins, “Outside” from Gymnopedie (2000 Rouge Records). Composed by Greg Kurstin; Minimoog, ARP String Ensemble, Organ, Guitar, Sampler, Drums, Rhodes Electric Piano, Greg Kurstin; Moog Theremin, Theremin Vocoder, Moogerfoogers, Pamelia Kurstin. 3:55 Hecate's Angels, “Shrink-Wrapped Soul” from Saints And Scoundrels (2004 redFLY Records). Los Angeles-based Pietra Wexstun is a composer, singer, keyboard and theremin player. Vocals, Farfisa organ, piano, theremin, sound effects, Pietra Wexstun; bass, Bill Blatt; guitar, Stan Ridgway; drums, Elmo Smith. 3:52 Pamelia Kurstin, “Barrow In Furness” from Thinking Out Loud (2007 Tzadik). From Kurstin first solo record. Composed, Produced, Theremin With L6 Looping Pedals and Microsynth Pedal, Guitar, Piano, Pamelia Kurstin. She played the Etherwave Pro Theremin by Moog fo this recording. Pamelia Kurstin, video with she and Bob Moogdiscussing the Etherwave Pro when it was introduced. Kurstin uses the Etherwave Pro Theremin by Moog Music. 5:12 Barbara Bucholtz, “SixEight” from Moonstruck (2008 Intuition Records). Bucholtz was a German theremin player and composer. She played a TVox Tour model theremin. Drums, Sebastian Merk; Music By, Contrabass Flute, Sampler, programmed, engineered, produced, and recorded by Tilmann Dehnhard; Trumpet, Arve Henriksen. 4:01 Herb Deutsch, “Longing” from Theremin One Hundred Years (2020 Electronic Sound). Composer, Herb Deutsch; Piano, Nancy Deutsch; Moog Melodia Theremin, Daryl Kubian. Recording from 2012. The beloved Herb Deutsch, who died recently at age 90, was an early collaborator with Bob Moog on the creation of the synthesizer. Herb became acquainted with Bob by purchasing a Theremin kit—a Moog Melodia model, in the early 1960s. He was primarily responsible for convincing Moog to add a keyboard to his modular unit. Also, this is taken from a terrific compilation of modern Theremin artists to benefit the New York Theremin Society. Check it out. 3:38 M83, “Sitting” from M83 (2016 Lowlands Festival). This is a live recording from Holland. “Sitting” was a song on M83's first album in 2001. But it didn't have a theremin part until they decided to spice-up the live interpretation of the song in 2016. Jordan Lawlor uses a Moog Theremini when M83 performs this in concert. He puts down his guitar, grabs some drum sticks, beats a rhythm on some electronic drums while dancing in place and moving his hands around a theremin. You can hear the theremin in this track but don't mistake it for the keyboard tones that Gonzalez is playing on his modular system. A longer sequence of theremin begins at 1:38 in the audio. You can view the video here, beginning at 26:54 into the show. M83 is a French electronica band founded in 1999 by Anthony Gonzalez, who remains the only sole member from the original outfit. Performing members on this live tour included: Anthony Gonzalez, lead vocals, modular synthesizers, keyboards, guitars, piano, bass, drums, percussion, programming, arrangement, mixer, production; Loïc Maurin, drums, percussion, guitar, bass, keyboards; Jordan Lawlor, guitars, vocals, multi-instrumentalist; Kaela Sinclair, Dave Smith and M-Audio keyboards, vocals; Joe Berry, piano, synthesizers, electronic wind instrument, saxophone. 4:03 Radio Science Orchestra, “Theme from Doctor Who” (2019). This UK-based band unites theremin, ondes martenot, Moog and modular electronics, for its performances. They've played such events as the TEDSummit, the British Library, and Glastonbury Festival. They made a concert recording with Lydia Kavina in 2009 of the Theme from Doctor Who. This version was made more recently and appears to also include Kavina. She plays the TVox Tour model theremin made by her husband G. Pavlov. 2:18 Thorwald Jørgensen, Kamilla Bystrova, “Moderato” from Air électrique: Original Music For Theremin And Piano (2020 Zefir). Jørgensen is an accomplished Dutch classical theremin player. Piano, Kamilla Bystrova; Liner Notes, Design, Moog Etherwave Pro Theremin, Thorwald Jørgensen. 2:10 Dorit Chrysler, “A Happy Place” from Theremin One Hundred Years (2020 Electronic Sound). Issued with the magazine's 7” vinyl and magazine bundle Electronic Sound Magazine, issue 70. Written, produced, and performed by Dorit Chrysler. 2:06 Dorit Chrysler, “Calder Plays Theremin Side A” from Calder Plays Theremin (2023 NY Theremin Society/Fridman Gallery) Written for Theremin Orchestra in 5 Movements, Chrysler's work is based on a commissioned sound piece by The Museum of Modern Art in conjunction with the exhibition Alexander Calder: Modern from the Start. Chrysler identified two of Alexander Calder's sculptures, Snow Flurry, I (1948) and Man-Eater with Pennants (1945), to interact and “play” multiple Theremins on site. I believe the Theremin are various Moog models. The New York Dolls were one of the greatest rock ‘n' roll bands of all time. They came to life when their hometown of New York City was coming apart at the seams in the midst of rising murder, rape and burglary rates. Their drummer drowned. Their bassist was nearly murdered. Their guitar players despised their singer and the only thing their singer loved more than Archie Bell was himself. This of course was all part of the act. The self-destruction, the violence, the intra-band squabbling, but it was of course also part of the band's reality. They were too pure to last. They were born to lose. As broadcast October 27, 2022 with plenty of spaced out vibes. Tonight we head to Houston or HTX as the locals like to call it. A massive spread out metropolis that is one of the largest in the US by square kilometers, the city near the Gulf Shore has been home to some legendary artists through the years, and that only continues here in 2022 with new acts like Khruangbin and their spaced out Thai-inspired surf funk. #feelthegravityTracklist (st:rt)Part I (00:00)Queen feat David Bowie – Under PressureSolange – Cranes in the SkyRobert Glasper Experiment feat Erykah Badu – Afro BlueBeyonce – Blow Khruangbin – Evan Finds The Third RoomKhruangbin – August Twelve Part II (30:03)Robert Glasper Trio – So Beautiful (Live at Capitol Records)Solange – DreamsSay Girl Say – Always TrippinDevin The Dude – Doobie AshtrayIslands of Pear – My Moon Has Disappeared Part III (58:25)Khruangbin & Leon Bridges – Texas SunLyle Lovett - If I Had A BoatDestiny's Child - Independent WomenTerrace Martin feat Robert Glasper, 9th Wonder, Kamasi Washington & Phoelix – Freeze TagBarbara Mandrell - Sleeping Single In A Double BedJohnny Nash – I Can See Clearly Now Part IV (88:28)The Suffers - Do WhateverArchie Bell & The Drells – Don't Let Love Get You DownHilary Duff - So YesterdayMaroon 5 feat Megan Thee Stallion – Beautiful MistakesKim Kwang Seok김광석- becoming dust 먼지가 되어 김광석Sanullim – Remorse 안타까운 마음

Chico Romano is the new-ish project from https://linktr.ee/chicoromano (Rob Romano), a Jersey-based musician who you might also know as the frontperson for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professor_Caveman (Professor Caveman). You should already be familiar with Chico Romano, whose most recent single, the upbeat and effervescent “UR My Best Friend” https://www.leftofthedial.fm/blog/news/chico-romano-urmybestfrien/ (we covered earlier this month). His upcoming EP Vol.5 is due out October 7th, and it's as eclectic and inventive as anything you've heard from his previous project. Rob joins Andrea on Left of the Dial this week to share some of his own music as well as a handful of songs from musicians he's connected with and to in a variety of ways. If you're listening in the Philly area, make sure you come out to Chio Romano's show on October 6th at the Ukie Club. https://dice.fm/event/5gn8k-fievel-is-glauque-chico-romano-and-flanafi-6th-oct-ukie-club-philadelphia-tickets?lng=en-US (You can get tickets now)! I have had a song playing in my head for a few weeks now. The song is “Tighten Up” released in 1968 by Archie Bell & The Drells. God has been impressing on my heart and soul the need to do the tighten up in my life…to tighten up in every way- body, mind, and spirit. To really have your act together is always a good thing, a best thing, but in light of this time of radical instability, we will be most fit to handle whatever curve ball the world throws our way if we are tightened up. Join with me as we learn to do the "Tighten Up!"Episode 245 launches SEASON 12! I incorrectly referred to it as season 11 at the intro! Please listen to the song "Tighten Up" when instructed in the podcast for a multidimensional sensory experience. You will better get the groove of the podcast if you listen to the hit single! As broadcast April 20, 2022 with only a bit of 420 for those living in the cloud today, but plenty of stuff to float with. Tonight we travel with the fabulous Dunia Aljawad to Houston as we explore this Texas megacity's pulsating music new and old. Space City has always flown beyond the atmosphere and below the radar versus neighboring New Orleans, but the legacy of HTX is truly magnificent. Great tunes from the biggies like Robert Glasper and Beyonce along with some newer indie joints like Say Girl Say and Islands of Pear to try and complete the experience, however incomplete given the volume.#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Queen feat David Bowie – Under PressureSolange – Cranes in the SkyRobert Glasper Experiment feat Erykah Badu – Afro BlueBeyonce – Blow Khruangbin – Evan Finds The Third RoomKhruangbin – August Twelve Part II (33:48)Robert Glasper Trio – So Beautiful (Live at Capitol Records)Solange – DreamsSay Girl Say – Always TrippinDevin The Dude – Doobie AshtrayIslands of Pear – My Moon Has Disappeared Part III (62:08)Khruangbin & Leon Bridges – Texas SunLyle Lovett - If I Had A BoatDestiny's Child - Independent WomenTerrace Martin feat Robert Glasper, 9th Wonder, Kamasi Washington & Phoelix – Freeze TagBarbara Mandrell - Sleeping Single In A Double BedJohnny Nash – I Can See Clearly Now Part IV (93:30)The Suffers - Do WhateverArchie Bell & The Drells – Don't Let Love Get You DownHilary Duff - So YesterdayMaroon 5 feat Megan Thee Stallion – Beautiful MistakesKim Kwang Seok김광석- becoming dust 먼지가 되어 김광석Sanullim – Remorse 안타까운 마음

Tonight we welcomed LA-based soul singer-songwriter Mark Evich to the show, and just like our conversations via text leading up to this, we covered a lot. From his disgust with the Russian invasion of Ukraine to the influence of an art teacher helping him discover his love of rnb back in the day, it was a great conversation not to mention the choice selects on the playlist! We're honored to give the world premiere spin to his upcoming single "PRIME," which you can only get a listen to right here on The Drop until next Friday!#feelthegravityTracklisting:Part I (00:00)Archie Bell & The Drells – StrategyDwele – A.N.G.E.L.
