Why do reasonable people believe unreasonable things on social media that could not possibly be true—like Hilary Clinton running a sex ring out of a pizza shop, or that Donald Trump somehow is still president and operating the country? Why do so many people repeat these lies and memes on social media and what does it cost us?Host Barry Moltz and guest Katherine Cross, a PhD candidate in information science, discuss the dangers of social media and the reasons why people believe false information on these platforms. This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/3306444/advertisement
This week we have a VERY special episode with a reappearance of one of our favorite guests, Katherine Cross! This week, she's talking about her recent piece in WIRED magazine When Social Media Presents Only an ‘Unlivable Life' and how all the doom posting about fascism and anti-trans hate is warping our brains and demobilizing us to fight back. It's an eye opening conversation that's worth your time and attention, especially if you're feeling down and overwhelmed about the state of the world. A very special thanks to our Cancellation List and above Patreons Megg, Catherine, Dahlia, I Beauregard, Leslie, Adrienne, Diego, Mae and Siobhan for making this episode possible. Asking for Good: Fundraisers help you launch your Nonprofit Career
Instead of mass applying to every job that looked semi-interesting, Katherine Cross took stock of the hiring organization and the job description. In this episode, she shares her process for identifying worthwhile opportunities and lessons learned from multiple virtual interviews. She shares how she prepared for interviews and the most common questions she was asked. The up-front investment of time during the application and interview process was worth it. Nearly a year into her new role, Katherine describes her work as fulfilling, challenging, engaging, and interesting. Katherine has worked in the nonprofit sector for over 10 years. In her current role at Memorial Sloan Kettering, she enjoys focusing on stewardship, taking on projects that showcase mission impact, and promote renewed and increased giving. She has always been drawn to the donor engagement and relationship-building side of things, previously holding a variety of fundraising and development roles at the Environmental Defense Fund, Catalyst, and Carnegie Hall. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/askingforgood/support

Sometimes you see something happening out in the world, and you feel compelled to record it. You just have to capture it. Is that okay? Legally, are you allowed to record someone without their permission? And what happens if you go viral, then what? It’s murky territory, both legally and as human beings, but we’re going to tackle it on Why’d You Push That Button this week. On this episode, we talk to Porscha Coleman, who recorded an infamous Apple Store Vine, as well as Carlye Wisel, who was once fashion-shamed on Snapchat by a stranger. They have completely opposite beliefs on recording, and we love to facilitate a debate. Then we talk to a couple experts — Jennifer Ellis, a lawyer, and Katherine Cross, a sociologist — who help us figure out when we can record and why we feel like we have to capture other people. Re-release of our Games Critique as POC Re-release with mildly improved audio quality. Trigger Warnings for this episode: We will be frank in regard to race, racism, transphobia, hatred and threats our guests have received for writing about games. Games critique is always risky especially given the way some people react to in-depth crit of their favorite games. Add a +20 difficulty modifier if you're a POC [Person of Color] who speaks up on gaming's issues. We're lucky enough to have Katherine Cross, Tauriq Moosa and Austin Walker with us to discuss this topic.
