The Terrifying Science of The Last of Us

The cordyceps brain infection that turns humans into terrifying monsters in The Last of Us is something that already exists in our world. So is it time to start worrying about Clickers and other fungus zombies? We are going to cut right to the chase on this one: Cordyceps, the brain infecting fungus that causes people to mutate into increasingly grotesque zombies in The Last of Us video games and the HBO TV adaptation, is very real. Of this, there is no doubt, as you'll see in our episode and read below. But like any good sci-fi, horror, or fantasy storytelling, the secret isn't so much in how realistic something is, but in how it obeys its own rules in-story.After all, who the heck needs a story about a devastating pandemic that was exacerbated by global warming these days, right? It's not like sci-fi and horror have ever been used to illustrate real world issues before. Why not just let escapism be escapism and leave all this uncomfortable real world stuff out of it?In case you couldn't sense the sarcasm (Does it Fly? is a Roddenberry podcast after all, and it's not like Star Trek has ever been shy about taking our present moment to task via the denizens of the 23rd, 24th, and 25th centuries), the inherent realism of The Last of Us is an integral part of what makes it work. But it's far from the only reason we're so enamored with this disturbing sci-fi and horror hybrid. And that's where Hakeem and Tamara come inWatch the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here (and try not to eat any infected grain)...https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8141JQ_kesSUGGESTED VIEWING One of the best things about The Last of Us is that the show is 100% accessible for folks who have never played the video games. It's also, perhaps not coincidentally, one of the only truly great video game to screen adaptations we've ever seen. We based our conversation for this episode on the first season of the show, but if you've even watched the first two episodes, you can probably keep up. Oh, just watch the entire first season! For some additional fungus-induced “fun” we also recommend the brilliant 2016 sci-fi horror movie The Girl With All the Gifts, which mines some similarly terrifying themes as The Last of Us.And don't forget, The Last of Us season 2 just kicked off on HBO and MAX so what are you waiting for? Go get caught up! Who knows? This could just be something in our future…FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do! The Zombie Ants Are Already HereThe intricately orchestrated way this fungus takes over insect brains and makes them do their bidding sure does give us something to think about. Read more at National Geographic! Fortunately, it doesn't seem like we have to worry too much about this becoming a human issue…just yet.Fungal PathogensIt even sounds gross when we put it that way. The Last of Us is so dead-on with its depiction of global-warming induced fungal infections that no less than the Yale School of Medicine wrote about it.Respiratory vs. Fungal InfectionsWe usually don't associate the usual respiratory viruses with fungal infections. But this article asks…why not both?A Guide to Knowing and Loving Your Infected Fungus ZombiesProper care and feeding for their lifecycle is important. Not really…run! Hotel Reverie, takes us deep into the haunting implications of AI-driven filmmaking, consciousness uploading, and emotional memory. Greg Alba & team react to this nostalgic and heartbreaking story starring Issa Rae (Insecure, Barbie) as actress Brandy Friday, who enters a simulated film world to act alongside a digital recreation of 1940s star Dorothy Chambers, portrayed by Emma Corrin (Deadpol & Wolverine, The Crown, Lady Chatterley's Lover). As the simulated Clara begins to gain self-awareness, Brandy's experience turns from glamorous role to emotional prison. The episode pays homage to classic cinema aesthetics while exploring modern ethical questions—reminiscent of San Junipero but with a uniquely bittersweet tone. From identity, AI ethics, and digital immortality, Hotel Reverie hits hard. At the end of the episode, Brandy is freed—but not without emotional cost. Does It Fly?
Can We Create Black Mirror's San Junipero in Real Life?

Does It Fly?

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 12, 2024 48:08

SPOILER ALERT: This episode of Does it Fly? and the show notes that follow contains spoilers for Black Mirror, “San Junipero.” If you haven't watched the episode yet, go check it out on Netflix and then come back and join us!One of Black Mirror's most critically acclaimed episodes! Apparently set in a seaside town in the 1980s, “San Junipero” follows the story of two women, Yorkie and Kelly, who meet and develop a relationship. But in fact, the San Junipero locale is a simulated reality where the elderly and dying can live out their remaining days in a youthful, idealized version of their choosing before deciding whether to pass on to death or remain in the simulation forever. San Junipero has cemented itself as one of the most “happy” episodes of Black Mirror, showing there's at least a little room for positivity and hope in the future. Hakeem and Tamara are back again, looking through the mirror at our reality to see what it would take to upload one's consciousness (and soul?) permanently. From a scientific perspective, Hakeem investigates the technological feasibility of uploading and suspending human consciousness in virtual reality. How are our memories created, and would it be possible to upload entire neural networks? What would the ethical considerations be for having an afterlife of this nature? How would it affect our understanding of life, death, and immortality? And how much of yourself and your memories will be uploaded? Perhaps most importantly, would this version of you be a copy, an imitation, or your whole self?Meanwhile, Tamara jacks in to tackle “San Junipero” from a story perspective. Does the episode's lack of technological explanation for its virtual reality enhance or diminish the authenticity of Yorkie and Kelly's relationship? What's the user interface like, and what's San Junipero's population breakdown? Would you trust your consciousness in the hands of a corporation for eternity? And how does this episode's positive ending reflect and challenge Black Mirror's usual pessimism about the future and technology? All this and more in our latest episode! Remember that you can join in on the conversation in the comments on our YouTube page, so be sure to like, subscribe, and come back for more!FURTHER READINGWant to dive a little deeper into the scientific concepts Hakeem touched on in today's episode? The Hebbian Learning Rule“Memories are fragments; some parts are in the pre-frontal cortex, some parts are in the hippocampus; it all has to do with the connection between neurons. Neurons that fire together wire together.”Memory Retrieval and the Passage of Time“Every time you access a memory, there's a possibility for modification.”Language Models, Explained“If you're Albert Einstein, you have a lot of writing; you have a lot of speech; I can put that in an AI learning algorithm so that it can learn to predict the next word just like ChatGPT does.”Self-Concept“We each have three selves: our private self, our public self, and our secret self.”Want some sci-fi & the afterlife or anthologies? Here are some suggested readings on stories and concepts similar to “San Junipero”!Permutation City by Greg Eagan“A life in Permutation City is unlike any life to which you're accustomed. You have Eternal Life, the power to live forever. Immortality is real, just not what you'd expect.”Axiomatic by Greg Eagan“Drawing on nine years of research, Axiomatic explores the ways we understand the traumas we inherit and the systems that sustain them.”The Wilds by Julia Elliott “At a deluxe medical spa on a nameless Caribbean island, a middle-aged woman hopes to revitalize her fading youth with grotesque rejuvenating therapies that combine cutting-edge medical technologies with holistic approaches.”Replay by Ken Grimwood“43-year-old man who dies and wakes up back in 1963 in his 18-year-old body. He relives his life with all his memories of the previous 25 years intact. This happens repeatedly, with the man playing out his life differently in each cycle.”Alice Isn't Dead by Joseph Fink“Keisha Taylor lived a quiet life with her wife, Alice, until the day that Alice disappeared.” Combines science fiction, romance, and horror, all with a beautiful story and character developmentSUGGESTED VIEWINGOf course, watching “San Junipero” is the best way to inform the discussion of today's episode, but here are a few other Black Mirror episodes that tackle death and technology in a not-so-far future.Black Mirror S3E4 “San Junipero”Our topic of discussion!Black Mirror S2E1 “Be Right Back”After Martha's boyfriend is killed, she turns to a service that creates an AI replica of him, bringing him back from the dead, or at least an imitation of him.Black Mirror S4E6 “Black Museum” A museum of medical marvels (or failures) from the hologram of a convicted killer's mind to a stuffed monkey with the consciousness of a dying mother, what miracles (or horrors) await in the Black Museum? Here are some movies and TV shows mentioned in this week's podcast or some honorable mentions!UploadAnother look into the reality of virtual reality in a not-so-far-off future. When a computer programmer gets into a deadly car accident, his consciousness gets uploaded into a virtual afterlife of his choosing, but not everything is as it seems. The Seventh SignMentioned by Hakeen and Tamara. A sci-fi drama/thriller that explores the myth of the Guf, the well of souls that's a place that you existed in before you were born. The MatrixYou can't talk about virtual realities without talking about The Matrix. Set in a dystopian future in which humanity is unknowingly trapped inside the Matrix, a simulated reality that intelligent machines have created.Vanilla SkyAn honorable mention that explores the concept of digital afterlife. Join Leo and me as we journey into the realm of Black Mirror, analyzing the societal implications of the Netflix series and its portrayal of our obsession with social media. We unpack the episode "Nosedive", examining its depiction of influencers, the burden and blessings of their platforms, and whether the show is a critique or an exaggeration of modern society. Listen as we share our insights into the role of recurring actors, and discuss the performance of Latisha Roy in "Black Museum", and how it propels the conversation about technology's impact on marginalized communities. Brace yourself as we step into the interactive world of "Bandersnatch" and debate how it gives the illusion of choice while actually leading to decision paralysis. We analyze how episodes like "Jonas Awful" and "Law Henry" draw attention to the exploitative nature of true crime, and discuss the nuances of Netflix's terms and conditions. Furthermore, we explore the concept of free will in Bandersnatch and share our thoughts on its many, somewhat disappointing, endings. Lastly, we move on to discussing our favorite performances and TV shows, with Daniel Kaluya's performance in "50 Million Merits" and Aaron Paul's performance in "Beyond the Sea" taking center stage. We also explore how seasoned actor, Andrew Garfield, outshone others in the movie "Tick, Tick, Boom". Wrapping up, we list our top 5 Black Mirror episodes and eagerly anticipate future seasons. What if you met your wife for the first time in Paradise? This week, Leigh (@lshfoster) and Ellie (@elliebrigida) talk about the 2016 episode of Black Mirror - San Junipero for this Lez-ssentials episode, a recurring segment on the essential movies and TV shows in the lesbian canon. If you haven't seen this episode of Black Mirror yet, go watch it! It's only an hour long and unlike most episodes, it is less horror, more sci fi romance.  This story is unique because it both does bury the gays and also doesn't. All things considered, it actually has a very happy ending for our sapphics, if you just ignore that they're technically dead and have had their consciousnesses uploaded to a digital afterlife. It's the sort of bittersweet happiness that we absolutely eat up, or as Ellie says, “It's giving Notebook vibes.”  There is just something so sweet about watching Yorkie get a first shot at love after her incredibly traumatic accident and Kelly getting a second chance at a love that she never really envisioned herself having after losing her husband and daughter. Yorkie is such a relatable baby gay and honestly between her sheltered homophobic upbringing and the car accident happening the same night she came out, we are just so happy to see her get to experience the lesbian life that she could never have even imagined was possible for herself. With Kelly, she is a little more hesitant to allow herself to fall in love as she is not planning to stay in San Junipero. We get very little good bisexual representation on our screens and Kelly is top tier, hands down. She was married to a man and very much in love with him for over 40 years, but that does not in any way invalidate her bisexuality or stop her from dating and hooking up with both women and men in San Junipero. So often society writes off bisexual women as soon as they marry men and it is really important to show the world that getting married does not suddenly erase a person's sexuality.  The fact that we get to see Yorkie go from completely missing out on life due to homophobia to regaining her freedom and chance for love through gay marriage is amazing. She was hesitant to even dance with Kelly at first, because she thought it would be improper for two girls to be seen dancing together and within the span of a few short weeks she is literally married to her. We love to see it! At the end of the episode, stick around to hear our original song based on San Junipero titled “Paradise” written by Leigh Holmes Foster and produced by Ellie Brigida. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Key questions about artificial sentience: an opinionated guide, published by Robbo on April 25, 2022 on LessWrong. [crossposted at the EA Forum and Experience Machines] What is it like to be DALL-E 2? Are today's AI systems consciously experiencing anything as they generate pictures of teddy bears on the moon, explain jokes, and suggest terrifying new nerve agents? This post gives a list of open scientific and philosophical questions about AI sentience. First, I frame the issue of AI sentience, proposing what I think is the Big Question we should be trying to answer: a detailed computational theory of sentience that applies to both biological organisms and artificial systems. Then, I discuss the research questions that are relevant to making progress on this question. Even if the ultimate question cannot be answered to our satisfaction, trying to answer it will yield valuable insights that can help us navigate possible AI sentience. This post represents my current best guess framework for thinking about these issues. I'd love to hear from commenters: suggested alternative frameworks for the Big Question, as well as your thoughts on the sub-questions. Introduction “Maybe if a reinforcement learning agent is getting negative rewards, it's feeling pain to some very limited degree. And if you're running millions or billions of copies of that, creating quite a lot, that's a real moral hazard.” -Sam Altman (OpenAI), interviewed by Ezra Klein (2021) Are today's ML systems already sentient? Most experts seem to think “probably not”, and it doesn't seem like there's currently a strong argument that today's large ML systems are conscious.[1] But AI systems are getting more complex and more capable with every passing week. And we understand sufficiently little about consciousness that we face huge uncertainty about whether, when, and why AI systems will have the capacity to have conscious experiences, including especially significant experiences like suffering or pleasure. We have a poor understanding of what possible AI experiences could be like, and how they would compare to human experiences. One potential catastrophe we want to avoid is unleashing powerful AI systems that are misaligned with human values: that's why the AI alignment community is hard at work trying to ensure we don't build power-seeking optimizers that take over the world in order to pursue some goal that we regard as alien and worthless. It's encouraging that more work is going into minimizing risks from misaligned AI systems. At the same time, we should also take care to avoid engineering a catastrophe for AI systems themselves: a world in which we have created AIs that are capable of intense suffering, suffering which we do not mitigate, whether through ignorance, malice, or indifference. There could be very, very many sentient artificial beings. Jamie Harris (2021) argues that “the number of [artificially sentient] beings could be vast, perhaps many trillions of human-equivalent lives on Earth and presumably even more lives if we colonize space or less complex and energy-intensive artificial minds are created.” There's lots of uncertainty here: but given large numbers of future beings, and the possibility for intense suffering, the scale of AI suffering could dwarf the already mind-bogglingly large scale of animal suffering from factory farming [2] The San Junipero servers from season 3, episode 4 of Black Mirror It would be nice if we had a clear outline for how to avoid catastrophic scenarios from AI suffering, something like: here are our best computational theories of what it takes for a system, whether biological or artificial, to experience conscious pleasure or suffering, and here are the steps we can take to avoid engineering large-scale artificial suffering. Such a roadmap would help us prepare...

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Key questions about artificial sentience: an opinionated guide, published by rgb on April 25, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. [crossposted at LessWrong and Experience Machines] What is it like to be DALL-E 2? 01:14:44 San Junipero, 01:33:42 Matrix, 01:55:02 Ready Player One.

(Or is it the other way around?) This week's outro music is a clip from Belinda Carlisle's "Heaven is a Place on Earth," which from now on will always remind us of San Junipero. https://youtu.be/NOGEyBeoBGM Hannah got photos of that mountain stream pre- and post-flash-flood, you can check them out here. https://twitter.com/HannahWallace/status/1031678565392306176 Correction: Kathryn, resident Hugo Award expert, said San Junipero won the 2017 Hugo for Best Dramatic Presentation, Short Form. Happy new year! And...unhappy near-future narratives, as Nick returns to discuss the fourth season of Black Mirror. We all ranked the episodes from our least to most favorite, and discussed what worked (Star Trek neckbeard vengeance; "San Junipero" with a twist) and what didn't (chases; barely altered procedurals). After we went Around The Dial with The Profit, Black-ish spin-off Grown-ish, and Runaways, Nick wined and dined us for our Canon votes with the "First Date" episode of Master Of None.
