Listen to these words from detransitioner Laura Perry Smalts in a recent Salvo Magazine article: “If I had known in 2007 that God's creation of male and female was not only good but impossible to alter, I would have saved myself a tremendous amount of pain and suffering. At the time, I would have repeated the typical cultural catchphrase that I was born this way. I believed I was a man trapped in a woman's body and that the only way I could be myself was to transition from female to male.” Laura Perry Smalts goes on to tell her story of transition, and how she came to the realization that she had been wrong, leading to a detransition. Her words are so helpful: “God said to me, “You cannot love me and yet reject my creation. Then I heard him say, Let me tell you who you are. In that moment, my whole idea of identity shifted from what I wanted to be, to who wanting to know who I was created to be.” Thank you Laura Perry Smalts, for reminding us of where to find our identity!

156. Not Man Enough to Be a Woman: How William Allen Detransitioned After 30 Years

You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist

In this powerful episode, I speak with William Allen, a man who lived for 30 years as a “transgender woman” named Maggie before detransitioning between 2020-2023. William shares his remarkable life story, from his earliest childhood memories of gender dysphoria through his transition in 1993, to his religious awakening and eventual detransition. His newly released book, "Not Man Enough to Be a Woman," details this extraordinary journey.William begins by sharing the viral social media post that caught my attention on Detrans Awareness Day. He then takes us back to his childhood in the 1960s, where despite appearing as a typical boy who played with neighborhood friends and joined the Boy Scouts, he secretly wished he had been born a girl and would dress in his mother's clothes when alone. He describes how throughout his youth, he couldn't understand why he had these feelings, finding no answers even in psychology textbooks during college. William shares the story of his first marriage, when his gender dysphoria temporarily subsided during the initial years of falling in love, only to return "with a vengeance" later, ultimately destroying his marriage.By 1993, William began hormone therapy, had his beard removed through electrolysis, and underwent surgeries. He details the physical changes from estrogen, the workplace transition, and how he was able to "pass" in society as a woman for many years.William speaks candidly about his life as Maggie. He describes a deathbed reconciliation with his estranged father in 2015 and the conversation decades earlier that gave his book its title - when his father told him he wasn't "man enough to be a woman."The turning point in William's story came in 2020 when he experienced a profound religious transformation that changed his perspective on his life and identity. This led to his decision to detransition, a three-year process that included saving money, finding a surgeon willing to perform a mastectomy, legal name changes, and rebuilding relationships.William's story raises profound questions: What happens when a false identity embraced for decades no longer aligns with one's deepest values? After living thirty years as Maggie, William's return to his birth identity offers a rare window into the complexities of gender dysphoria, transition, and detransition that few have experienced over such an extended period. His story challenges simplistic narratives while offering compassion for those struggling with gender identity issues.William Allen struggled with gender identity disorder from childhood in the 1960s. Hiding his condition throughout his teenage, college, and young adult years, his obsession only grew stronger, eventually ruining his marriage. He began his “transition” in 1993. After hormones, beard removal, voice coaching, and surgery, he "passed" and settled into a successful life, until he rediscovered his faith. He completed his detransition in 2023, after 30 years living as a “transwoman.” William now speaks out against the transgender movement's deceptions and intentional targeting of children. Levi Hayes is an artist and writer eight months into his deeply personal journey of detransitioning who recently decided to file a complaint against the therapist who “affirmed” his “gender identity” rather than treating his trauma. We delve into the often-overlooked trauma that accompanies both the transition process and the aftermath of living a transitioned life. Levi opens up about the emotional toll of navigating societal expectations, the pressure to maintain an illusion, and the regret that can follow such significant life changes. We explore the complexities of Levi's experiences, from his childhood in a rural Midwest town where he faced bullying and rejection, to his adult life marked by impulsive decisions and a search for validation through transition. Levi candidly discusses his encounters with therapists who failed to address the underlying trauma and internalized homophobia that influenced his choices. We also touch on the challenges he faced when filing a complaint against a therapist who affirmed his transition, highlighting the systemic issues within mental health care. My template that Levi used can be found here.Throughout our conversation, we aim to uncover the nuances of identity, the impact of societal pressures, and the importance of addressing trauma in therapeutic settings. Levi's story serves as a powerful reminder of the need for compassion and understanding in discussions about gender identity and mental health.Levi is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist and designer with a passion for creative expression. Based in Missouri, he is also a writer and blogger who has transformed his journaling and Written Exposure Therapy practice into a powerful storytelling platform. As a detransitioner, Levi shares his journey with authenticity, inspiring others to reclaim their own paths.Levi's blog post about his board complaintThe subsequent update & response from the boardBlog: Living for LeviLevi's Art Portfolio 00:00 Start[00:00:00] Trauma of living a transitioned life.[00:08:00] Statute of limitations challenges.[00:14:09] Sharing stories for change.[00:15:08] Childhood trauma and identity struggles.[00:20:35] Trauma and escapism in identity.[00:31:29] Understanding trauma in therapy.[00:35:57] Therapy for detransitioners.[00:42:26] Escaping homosexuality through transition.[00:43:32] Masculinity and male acceptance.[00:51:11] Fantasy of acceptance and validation.[00:56:09] Detransitioning and personal awakening.[01:02:03] Trauma of transition experience.[01:10:17] Shapeshifter as a hero.[01:12:20] Detransitioning and self-discovery journey.[01:16:28] Self-care in detransition journey.[01:22:01] Impact of gender craze on families.ROGD REPAIR Course + Community gives concerned parents instant access to over 120 lessons providing the psychological insights and communication tools you need to get through to your kid. If you have a son, you need to be aware of the information in today's episode. When he was in sixth grade, Shane Cole discovered sissy hypnosis pornography. A secretive and shameful addiction to this disturbing sexual content impacted his formative years, and ultimately led him to identify as transgender and experiment with cross-sex hormones. But today, he is a health-conscious, detransitioned young man who leads trauma-informed Breathwork workshops and studies Tibetan Buddhism. How did he get here?Shane shares his deeply personal journey of overcoming an addiction to sissy hypnosis pornography — and an alarming message to parents about the prevalence and accessibility of this brainwashing online material. We delve into the emotional turmoil that this type of content can inflict, particularly on young boys, and how it intertwines shame, trauma, and pleasure in a way that can lead to destructive patterns of behavior. Shane explains how this genre of pornography exploits male insecurities and can lead to a distorted sense of identity, including a brief period where he believed he was transgender. We explore the alarming rise of sissy hypnosis content online, particularly among young men, and discuss the implications of this trend for parents and society at large. Shane highlights the importance of understanding the psychological impact of such material, including the cognitive dissonance it creates in sensitive young men who are trying to navigate their identities in a world filled with conflicting messages about masculinity and femininity.Surprisingly, like other detransitioners I've spoken with here, Shane credits his awakening in part to psychedelics. He speaks about how trauma-informed Breathwork, meditation, and other mind-body practices have helped ground him in a new, healthy sense of self.Throughout our discussion, we aim to uncover the underlying factors that contribute to these issues, including societal pressures, the influence of social media, and the lack of open conversations about male sexuality. This episode serves as a wake-up call for parents and listeners to recognize the potential dangers lurking online and the urgent need for dialogue around these topics.Shane Cole is a trauma-informed breathwork facilitator and founder of Inspiratus Breathwork. After studying psychology at the University of Southern California and completing a nine-month, trauma-informed breathwork facilitator training program, he travels the country to musical festivals and retreats teaching breathwork. With Inspiratus, he creates sacred spaces for humans to cultivate purpose, positivity, and presence through his research-backed approach to breathwork. Throughout his life, he struggled with gender dysphoria and an addiction to sissy hypnosis pornography. After traditional talk therapy did not assist or even want to address the issues he faced, he turned to alternative solutions. Using breathwork, meditation, IFS therapy, psychedelic-assisted therapy, and men's work, he was able to free himself from his addiction, come back to his masculinity, and reclaim his innocence. He is now on a mission to bring breathwork practices to clients struggling with gender dysphoria and pornography addiction. Website: https://www.inspiratusbreathwork.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/breathingwithshane/ 00:00 Start[00:01:12] Sissy hypnosis pornography addiction.[00:05:16] Sissy hypno porn and its effects.[00:12:46] Epigenetics and inherited trauma.[00:16:27] The devil frequency in hypnosis.[00:21:24] Male-dominated trans-identified community.[00:28:11] Shame and gender dysphoria.[00:29:08] Addiction to dark pornography.[00:34:03] CIA and mind control theories.[00:38:19] Forced feminization in hypnosis porn.[00:44:32] Cognitive dissonance in masculinity.[00:49:59] Feminization as perceived safety.[00:52:27] Validation and gender dysphoria.[00:56:32] The impact of pornography addiction.[01:00:51] Detransitioning and psychedelics insights.[01:07:35] Breathwork training and meditation.[01:08:27] Spiritual practices and self-acceptance.[01:15:09] Breathwork as emotional catharsis.[01:16:55] Emotional catharsis and healing.[01:21:31] Male sexual shadow and healing.[01:25:12] Masculine rites of passage.[01:31:06] Breathwork in music venues.[01:34:08] Breathwork for purpose and healing.[01:38:31] Custom camping breathwork retreat.ROGD REPAIR Course + Community gives concerned parents instant access to over 120 lessons providing the psychological insights and communication tools you need to get through to your kid. Parents of trans-identified adolescents and young adults need educational resources that go beyond merely explaining why gender ideology and medicalization are harmful. They need tools that help them understand the psychological state their adolescent and young adult children are in, and teach them different approaches to communicating that are more likely to succeed than to backfire given their kids' state of mind.I created The ROGD Repair Course and Community with this in mind. It's a comprehensive toolkit designed to empower concerned parents to help get their kids out of this mess while restoring their relationships — and their sanity.ROGD Repair is a promising new program designed to equip parents of trans-identified adolescents and young adults with a comprehensive and customizable toolkit of psychology concepts and communication skills, curated specifically to help them walk their children toward desistance while protecting parents' own sanity.Imagine if parents of “trans” identified kids actually had a way to walk them out of this mess, wisely and strategically, and bring them home to safety and sanity.Imagine if every new ROGD parent knew which pitfalls to avoid when communicating with zealous adolescents and young adults. What if, instead, these parents could skillfully apply time-tested communication techniques, suited to address the mental state of gender-confused youth? What if the youth's own fears and motivations could actually lead them toward health, harmony and wholeness? What if parents could protect their sanity and their most important relationships at the same time, all while improving their odds of rescuing their children from the clutches of a harmful ideology before any bodily harm takes place? The ROGD Repair Course + Community for Parents is designed to do all of that. And now, it's available to the public, at a fraction of the cost of coaching. Parents can learn the tools from 90+ video and written lessons on their own time and begin implementing them immediately. Youth Culture Today with Walt Mueller

In recent months, we are hearing more and more stories of detransitioners who are renouncing and speaking out about their prior self-identification of being transgender. Research in the journal, Archives of Sexual Behavior, reports on interviews with seventy-eight individuals from the United States, ages eighteen to thirty-three who had stopped identifying as transgender at least six months prior to the interview. Their average age for first identifying as transgender was seventeen point one years of age, and they had done so for an average of five point four years before detransitioning. Eighty three percent had taken steps to transition socially, and sixty-eight percent had taken at least one medical step. Most reported that they had embraced the ideology because of prior mental health issues and trauma. They report better psychological health since detransitioning. These stories are becoming more widespread, and we shouldn't be surprised.

In this episode, I sit down with Tamara Pietzke, a mental health therapist best known for having blown the whistle on gender affirming care this past February in a Free Press article. What has she been up to since then?We discuss the complexities of therapists being pressured to rubber stamp gender identities and recommend medical interventions. Tamara shares her experiences challenging the status quo and the backlash she faced for questioning the rush to affirm identities. We explore the ethical dilemmas therapists face when young clients demand immediate medicalization, and confront the myths surrounding suicide risk and prevention in the transgender population. How do we navigate the fine line between supporting individuals in the moment and ensuring their long-term well-being? The conversation touches on the hot-cold empathy gap, the sunk cost fallacy, and the conveyor-belt nature of the gender industry, shedding light on the challenges of helping vulnerable youth in today's society.Join us as we unravel the layers of social contagion, neuroplasticity, and the impact of social transitioning on young minds. Can therapy provide a safe space for exploration beyond immediate demands for medical interventions? Tune in to discover how therapists like Tamara navigate the delicate balance of protecting the holistic health of their clients.Tamara is a mental health therapist (licensed independent clinical social worker) and has been a therapist for twelve years. She has worked a number of places, but most recently was working at Multicare, one of the state's largest hospital systems, for the past six years. When she raised concerns about the shift towards mandated "gender affirming care," she was bullied and dismissed. She stopped working there January of 2024, a couple weeks before her whistleblowing article came out in the Free Press. From Multicare, she went to another practice, but they let her go after three weeks, the same week the article came out, simply saying she wasn't "the right fit for the position." She has since been working on building a private practice. Meanwhile, the state is now investigating her license on account of not being "gender affirming.”Links & Resources: Free Press article 1Free Press article 2City Journal articleGive Send GoPietzke Counseling 00:00 Start[00:01:10] Gender affirming care concerns[00:07:11] Gender-affirming therapy for teenagers.[00:12:25] Symbolic exploration of identity.[00:14:25] Gender identity exploration challenges.[00:17:48] Suicide risk and gender-affirming care.[00:20:51] Teenagers and parental involvement.[00:27:02] Therapists' reaction to detransitioners.[00:29:10] Therapists' reaction to differing views.[00:31:27] The gray area in ethics.[00:36:59] Challenges in therapy practice.[00:40:21] The hot cold empathy gap.[00:44:05] Conversion therapy and gender identity.[00:45:05] Gender dysphoria and identity confusion.[00:48:57] Power dynamics in adolescence.[00:53:35] Navigating marketing in therapy.[00:59:10] Ethics of helping endangered children.[00:59:29] Detransitioning concerns in youth.[01:05:03] Ethics in Therapy[01:08:28] Whistleblowers and support network.[01:10:50] Gender crisis. The desire to be a mother came to Daisy Strong after she had undergone a double mastectomy and started taking wrong sex hormones. The desire must have been shocking, because she had told herself that she would never get pregnant; she was going to be a man. And as everyone knows, men can't get pregnant. But if the desire to have children ever did come, she figured she could just use surrogacy. The desire to mother, moved her to reconsider her persona as a man, and move towards transitioning. While she and her husband were looking at surrogacy she realized that she had a body that could get pregnant, if what she had done didn't prevent her from becoming pregnant.   Daisy Strongin is a 24-year-old woman who detransitioned after identifying as a man for five years. She is a stay-at-home mother and lives with her husband and 2-month-old son in the suburbs of Chicago. Her goal in her activism is to support detransitioners' voices and to persuade medical and mental health professionals to engage in more ethical and critical conversations surrounding care for gender dysphoria.   Follow Daisy on social media Daisy Strongin on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Dmchadra   Daisy Strongin

Today I welcome the esteemed Dr. Joseph Burgo to discuss the psychological crisis of males who find refuge in a trans identity. Along the way, we explore myriad contributing factors, from shame, narcissism, and autogynephilia; to rising rates of autism and unlimited access to increasingly obscene internet pornography; as well as gender roles, norms, expectations, and recent cultural shifts. As we unravel the narratives of ex-military men and individuals in positions of power who transition, we uncover the complexities of idealization and devaluation in trans identification and the numerous parallels with personality disorder traits. How do societal norms and social justice narratives fuel the shallow idealization of the opposite gender? We also touch on the challenges detransitioners face in therapy and the obstacles therapists encounter in providing effective care for individuals with gender ideation. How can therapists navigate the tense climate surrounding gender identity exploration? And what role should exploration of fantasies and projections play in understanding the complexities of gender distress? Joseph Burgo, Ph.D. is a licensed clinical psychologist and graduate psychoanalyst who has been practicing for more than 40 years. As a writer, he's the author of several works of non-fiction bringing his insights and experience as a therapist to a popular audience, and his articles and commentary on the topics of shame and narcissism have appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, and most of the large news outlets online. In this episode of the Moms for Trans Kids podcast, mamabeast Dr. Lulu and co hosts discuss the importance of supporting gender diverse children and the challenges they face. They address the recent propaganda surrounding detransitioning and the need to focus on trans joy and happiness. The guests share personal experiences and highlight the significance of parental support in a child's transition journey. The conversation emphasizes the need for medical professionals to provide gender affirming care and the importance of understanding the unique struggles faced by transgender individuals. Key Takeaways: Supporting gender diverse children is crucial for their mental health and overall well-being. Detransitioning is rare and often occurs due to societal and familial pressure, not personal regret. Transgender individuals who receive gender affirming care experience increased confidence and happiness. Parents play a vital role in their child's transition journey and should provide unwavering support and love. Medical organizations and professionals support gender affirming care and recognize its life-saving impact. In what ways is gender ideology cult-like? What are its core foundational myths, and how can concerned citizens challenge them? Today's guest, Justine Deterling, founded the LGB watchdog organization Gender Health Query to create resources for parents and educators to address these concerns. In this episode, we discuss the cult-like dynamics of gender activism influencing young people's beliefs and behaviors; debunk We also touch on the role of mental health professionals in addressing the unique needs of the LGB community amidst the growing emphasis on TQ+ issues. In its quest to “affirm” the rainbow, has the counseling profession inadvertently harmed LGB people?Justine Deterling is an LGB human rights activist with a focus on pediatric transition for gender dysphoria and its effects on youth of all orientations. She founded the medical and queer theory watchdog organization Gender Health Query in 2019, which provides extensive information on these subjects and whose members protest ideological “LGBTQ+” activists corrupting media, the health professions, and education. Gender Health Query members hope people will join them in sending the message opposing extremist gender activism is not “bigotry” but a sane response to overreach. They would like people to join them in opposing indoctrinating school children and teens into radicalization and unscientific worldviews around sex and gender. GHQ is part of a larger long-term goal to create an evidence-based, supportive organization focusing on the long-term well-being of LGB people and the wider society. How much do you know about the detransitioning process, or how much patients are told about it prior to medical transition? The truth may shock you, but you should know, because even if you don't think this issue affects you, it may someday affect someone in your life, and you likely won't hear what we'll be discussing from doctors, therapists, teachers, and definitely not from politicians.Camille Kiefel is a pathfinder. She brings the message that mental and physical health are connected; in an area of medicine dominated by medical institutions and their bottom line. Instead of pursuing risky, experimental and life-altering treatments for gender dysphoria, she advocates for a medical protocol grounded in the physical fundamentals of health.A detransitioner, Camille once believed a non-binary double mastectomy would finally provide relief where 20- years of talk therapy with conventional modalities hadn't; she lives with physical health issues from the surgery. Through improved diet, and directly addressing her physical health imbalances, her mental health resolved. She now brings awareness to the often overlooked, but undeniable link between physical health and mental health. Camille determined that the discomforts that lead to her gender dysphoria were rooted in the state of her physical health all along—and they had been overlooked by her doctor, two mental health professionals, and a surgeon.Camille lives at the intersection of a foundational controversy in how we define health: That mental health is not separate from the biological systems of the body. She believes every Human being needs a solid foundation in physical health from which to thrive—an integrated approach to health, that incorporates all three foundational domains of health—physical, mental and dietary—is needed to address the biggest health issues of our time.Website: https://www.camillekiefel.com/Detrans Help: https://detranshelp.org/Allmylinks: https://allmylinks.com/camille-kiefelSUPPORT MY WORK:Your support makes my work possible. Layton shares her frustration at not being given the opportunity to explore healing from her trauma before being pushed towards medical gender transition. As the conversation unfolds, we explore the boundaries crossed by Layton's therapist and the power dynamics at play. How did her therapist so egregiously overlook her real needs? What countertransference issues on the part of the therapist might have contributed to this massive ethical breach? We touch on the sadistic element that may have influenced her therapist's actions and the flattery used to manipulate and groom Layton. We also discuss the importance of ethical boundaries in therapy and the potential harm caused by therapists who fail to manage their countertransference.Layton shares her journey of self-discovery and the pivotal moment when she started to question her decision to transition. Sara Stockton is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, lecturer, researcher, and clinical supervisor of a psychotherapy practice in New York who has done a complete 180 on the subject of youth gender transition. Ms. Stockton spent the first part of her career advocating for “gender affirming care” in the treatment of trans-identified youth. Starting in 2008, her work with this population included traveling to teach and train medical facilities, physicians, and schools on “gender affirmation.” In 2013, she co-authored one of the first mental health assessments in the US utilized to assess youth “readiness” for gender transition. She treated over 100 families, and wrote many of the first letters that were used to approve gender transition surgeries on minors, before a change of perspective shifted the focus of her work. More recently, she was featured in the documentary “What is a Woman,” where she decided to speak out about her moments of doubt and realizations, and her decision to raise awareness about the pitfalls of this approach. She has also been interviewed by Jordan Peterson and on Gender: A Wider Lens.In this episode, Sara shares her journey from being a young graduate student specializing in gender issues to her eventual shift in focus towards sex therapy. We discuss the lack of historical context and critical examination of the treatment protocols for transgender-identified youth; the pressure to conform to a specific narrative without questioning the long-term consequences; and ways in which young therapists' naïveté, openness, and eagerness to prove themselves can all be utilized to further an agenda that might more easily be recognized as sinister by more grounded individuals.Sara opens up about the ethical dilemmas she encountered, including the issue of informed consent and the pressure to prescribe irreversible medical interventions to young people. We explore the concept of autogynephilia and its implications for understanding the motivations behind gender identity. We touch on the hyper-sexualization of youth in the context of gender issues; the links between sexual deviance and the “trans” movement; and the challenges of navigating discussions around sexuality and intimacy with young clients.Sara shares a pivotal moment in her career when she encountered a detransitioner and realized the lack of support and resources available for those who regret their medical transition. We discuss the vulnerability of individuals during times of personal struggle and the potential for manipulation and exploitation. This episode raises important questions about the need for a more nuanced and critical approach to gender issues. Join us as we delve into these complex topics and challenge the prevailing narratives surrounding trans-identified youth. When the world around us moves rapidly with new narratives and identities, it's crucial to pause and reflect on the stories that may not make the headlines. Our latest episode takes us through the layers of transgenderism and the sensitive paths of those who have detransitioned. The heartfelt accounts we explore reveal both the struggles and the need for compassionate outreach, especially from the body of Christ, to those wrestling with gender dysphoria. The influence of the internet and society on the transgender experience, particularly among the youth, cannot be overstated. We take a candid look at the pressures parents and individuals face, from acceptance of transition to navigating complex family dynamics. One testimony we hear is a powerful reminder of identity, the quick steps to medical affirmation, and the life-altering decisions made in the face of internal and external turmoil.  In a world where grace and hope are desperately needed, our conversation shifts to the risks and debates surrounding gender-affirming care for children and adolescents. We examine the global reassessment of transgender therapy and discuss the church's role in providing a loving and supportive community. Through stories of detransition and the journey towards healing, our episode emphasizes the power of God's grace and the essential call for preparedness and compassion within the church to extend a hand to those in pain.Timestamps: (00:16) - Exploring Transgenderism and Gender-Affirming Care (08:43) - Internet's Impact on Transgender Transitioning (23:22) - Concerns About Gender Transition in Children (33:09) - Detransitioning and the Need for Compassion (44:26) - Grace and Hope in a Changing WorldJoin us weekly as we strive help people embrace God's standard for sexuality! Other ways to listen:https://linktr.ee/calibrateconversations

For years, Oli London tried to cure his unhappiness by changing his basic identity. He tried to become a "transracial" Korean, then declared himself "transgender" and underwent one surgery after another. Now, he realizes it was a tragic mistake, has detransitioned, and is trying to warn away the countless children in danger of the same fate. Charlie talks to London about his journey, how the trans agenda has corrupted medicine, and how Christianity helped to save him from descending into the abyss.Support the show: http://www.charliekirk.com/supportSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
