It's no secret that at AllBright, we love to talk to, learn from, and be inspired by female entrepreneurs. Todays' guest is the Veuve Clicquot Australian Bold Woman award 2021 winner, ModiBodi founder Kristy Chong, who generated three million dollars in sales within the first three years of launching her period and leak proof underwear, without outside investment. In doing so, she changed the way women think about topics such as periods and incontinence. She has also put a spotlight on why thinking sustainably about these topics isn't an option, it's essential. The average woman will use 12,000 to 16,000 tampons and sanitary pads in her lifetime. And why period poverty isn't a problem we can ignore (ModiBodi has donated 25,000 pairs of underwear to women in times of crisis and women in need). In the beginning her products were seen as “taboo” by many large retailers. But Kristy got them talking. She soon raised capital, has sold more than four million pairs of underwear globally, seen a 929 per cent revenue growth in the past two years and won numerous awards including most recently, the Veuve Clicquot Bold Woman award. Impressed? So are we. Let's meet this bold woman. Go to veuveclicquot.com / modibodi.com See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A decade into Modibodi's impressive journey, founder and CEO Kristy Chong joins us to talk about where her big idea came from, how she's harnessed the intersection between technology and sustainability, and the mountainous challenge of launching a new product when your category is as taboo as periods and incontinence. We talk about competition and why Kristy's not afraid of it, the critical role of trust for brands and consumers, how it felt to have one of the most-complained about advertisements in the country, and much more.
Today's guest is such an inspiration, changing the lives of women around the world. In 2013, Kristy Chong started Modibodi after she experienced bladder leakage after the birth of her second child and her business trajectory from there is incredible. Making it onto Deloitte’s Technology Fast 50 List for 2019 shows just how rapidly Kristy Chong’s baby, Modibodi reusable leak-proof underwear, is growing: from a humble start-up 7 yrs ago to a global star. But what really drives this young entrepreneur is giving customers what they want & need: a solution to personal hygiene leaks and spills, and a solution to the billions of fem hygiene tampons and pads dumped in landfill globally each year. Modibodi’s turnover is now close to $50million a year.
New mum Kristy Chong wanted to solve an everyday, often embarrassing, problem for women, & men, without the massive amounts of disposable personal hygiene products eventually being dumped in landfill. With passion & perseverance she created revolutionary underwear that promises to soak up leaks, periods and perspiration, building Modibodi into an empire growing recently by up to 400% a year.

I can’t even begin to articulate how different my teenage years would have been if period undies had been invented. Luckily for the next generation, Aussie-owned brand Modibodi is smashing the stigma around all things menstruation. And let me tell you, these are no ordinary undies. Whilst Modibodi undies are designed specifically for periods and light bladder leaks, they are also helping the planet. In this episode I’m chatting to Kristy Chong, the creator of Modibodi period underwear. And today we get really honest about our own experiences relating to menstruation. Join Kristy and me for a heartfelt chat about reusable period undies that actually last the distance, exactly how they work, and Modibodi’s “Give A Pair” program. According to Kristy, 1 in 5 women have heavy periods – if that’s you, this episode could just be a gamechanger. Key takeaways: Period undies work by absorbing liquid through the top layer straight through to the middle layer, with a waterproof layer that protects your clothing. If you use period underwear in conjunction with a menstrual cup (if needed), you can truly have a zero-waste period! A big part of Modibodi’s mission is to educate, break down taboos and open up conversations about periods so that menstruation is no longer shameful. Kristy recommends that teens have at least 7 pairs of period undies; one pair for day and one for night, washed on day three. For minimal fuss cleaning, Kristy is a fan of just throwing the underwear in the washing machine when it’s time to wash.
