The Ireland Chapter of the Project Management Institute (PMI) has announced that it is prioritising social good with a partnership with the Irish Emergency Alliance. Established in 2018 and active in 95 of the world's poorest countries, the Irish Emergency Alliance aims to help, save and rebuild the lives of those affected by major emergencies across the globe. As well as a growing alliance - which currently includes ActionAid, Christian Aid, Plan International, Self Help Africa, Tearfund Ireland, Trócaire and World Vision - it has responded to five catastrophic emergencies and raised over €6.75 million. Helping this effort, the Ireland Chapter of PMI encourages its chapters across the world to undertake social good, locally and internationally. It promotes the great work of the Irish Emergency Alliance, provides expert volunteer resources to support its mission, and partakes in fundraising events for the organisation. As part of this, the Irish Emergency Alliance is one of the first charities in Europe to be recognised as part of Project Managers Without Borders (PMWB), a worldwide initiative by PMI which partners project managers with not-for-profit and non-government organisations to affect change and empower communities. The partnership also enables the Irish Emergency Alliance to access volunteers and project managers within the Ireland Chapter of PMI who have domain knowledge in other areas such as finance, IT and marketing. To support the partnership and its own efforts in the area of social good, the Ireland Chapter of PMI has also recently appointed a new Director of Social Good, Carlos Mandolesi. He will be responsible for overseeing its volunteering activities and expanding its charity partnerships. Peter Glynne, President of the Ireland Chapter of PMI, said: "Our aim is to engage people, embrace social good, and elevate the impact of the project management profession - and there is no greater impact than helping those in need. The work that the Irish Emergency Alliance does is nothing short of incredible and it is an honour to be able to get involved in and support what they do. From us donating the proceeds of one of our ticketed events to the Irish Emergency Alliance to them getting involved in our National Project Awards, it's all about collaborating and making a difference together." Brian Casey, Executive Director of the Irish Emergency Alliance, added: "We want to do even more for communities and people whose lives have been devastated by emergencies, be that raising money or having people on the ground. As a small membership organisation, we can only do that with the help of our partners, including the Ireland Chapter of PMI. By tapping into the enormous potential that a shared response unleashes, we have been able to - and hope to continue to - react with agility, work with agencies, and provide much-needed emergency support."

2024 has not provided the progress we need to close gaps globally for girls. But 2025 can be different. Today's guest is Susanne Legena, CEO of Plan International Australia, and someone who enjoys – and is particularly good at – taking a ‘big picture' strategic focus on issues, and finding hope in despair. In this conversation, Susanne outlines some of the critical challenges facing girls and women globally: notably conflict, climate change and hunger. She shares some of the highs and lows for girls internationally in 2024, and what we can all do to see more progress on issues like education, ending child marriage, and ensuring access to healthcare and safety for girls.Susanne's role sees her travelling extensively and meeting with her counterparts globally while also regularly commenting on gender equity issues, as well as the continuous stream of research and stories that Plan International releases, especially on how girls are faring across our region. We are entering 2025. The halfway mark of the twenties in what has long been considered the 'critical decade'. As Susanne outlines, we have five years until 2030, the year recorded as a key global target for many things, including sustainable development goals and emissions reduction targets. So how much can we get done in five years? More than we think. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Headlines: Melbourne and Sydney pro-Palestine protestors push ahead with plans for protests over October 7 weekend, Labor plans to address shrinkflation, Australia's rental prices might finally be coming down and we look at last night's Dally M awards. Deep dive: When we think about the effects of war on children – the psychological trauma of witnessing violence and the loss of loved ones is well known. But what is lesser known is exactly how these conflicts disproportionately affect young girls over boys – the brutal violations of their rights and the surprising ways they find escapism to cope with it all. This insight is the focus of a new report published today by Plan International, which surveyed over 10,000 young people across 10 countries currently experiencing armed conflict. The report, which was first published in 2007 under the title the ‘State of the World's Girls', has this year been widened to include young boys for the first time. On this episode of The Briefing, CEO of Plan International Australia Susanne Legena joins Antoinette Lattouf to unpack the results. A catastrophe is unfolding in Sudan right now. Nearly 26 million people are facing crisis levels of hunger, cholera is rampant and many trying to find safety have experienced horrific sexual violence including rape and abduction on their journeys. To conflict stems from the dictatorship of Omar al-Bashir, a pro-democracy revolution against him led by young people five years ago and a power struggle between Sudanese military and a rival militia called the Rapid Support Forces, which kicked off in April. In this episode of The Briefing, Bension Siebert is joined by Sara Sinada, who has family in the region and works as a disaster risk manager for the humanitarian organisation Plan International to explain the situation, and what those watching from afar in Australia can do to help. Ken Phillips, named the Association of Fundraising Professional's “2024 Fundraiser of the Year”, embodies these principles with remarkable distinction. In an insightful conversation with host Julia Patrick, Ken shares invaluable perspectives on the evolving landscape of fundraising and its profound significance in shaping a better world. Ken brings to light the critical role of fundraisers in catalyzing positive change. With over four decades of experience, Ken epitomizes the transformative power of fundraising, grounded in a profound belief that it builds a better world, stating, "Raising money for good programs that help people and giving donors something of value... as a fundraiser, you're helping two worlds." His journey began with a deep-rooted passion for social impact, shaped by childhood influences and a commitment to excellence instilled by his parents. He advocates for a shift towards 'total organization fundraising,' where every member is empowered to champion the cause. He challenges the status quo, highlighting the pressing need for internal communication and professional development within fundraising teams. By fostering a culture of philanthropy and nurturing internal talent, Ken envisions a future where fundraisers are truly catalysts of change, driving sustainable impact worldwide. SummaryWhat are the vital steps a senior leader have to take as they step into a new leadership role? What to do and what to expect when you are transitioning into that new role? And, separately, to what extent are African leadership models and frameworks different from global North ones? Most importantly, what could global North imprinted leadership models learn from African ones? In this NGO Soul+Strategy podcast episode, I interview Adama Coulibaly, Global Programs Director at Oxfam, on both these topics. He is a very experienced NGO leader, a coach, and an eloquent thinker and author on all things leadership. And he just transitioned into his new role at Oxfam, so he is here to speak from experience! Adama's Bio:A seasoned leader with nearly 30 years of experience in international development and humanitarian aidGlobal Programs Director, Oxfam International; earlier in his career he was also a Regional Director at Oxfam Leadership positions as Country Director at the International Rescue Committee, Regional Director at Plan International, and Principal Adviser at UNICEFCertified Transformational coach, and somebody who labels himself a 'positive thinker' We discuss: His advice to leaders who are transitioning into an organization, based on his own experienceWhat differentiates African takes on leadership models and frameworks, as distinct from global North imprinted models?Adama Coulibaly (nickname ‘Coul') considers himself a born positive thinker; he learned this behavior in his youth while facing very difficult circumstances in his home country MaliAs an adult, he learned about the field of positive thinking; and that positive thinking is good for your physical and mental healthCoul's advice, in a nut shell, on how to transition into a new senior leadership position:Give yourself at least 2, if not 4 weeks between two jobsUse your break time to learn as much about your new organization as you canCommunicate healthy boundaries immediately, otherwise, you will pay a stiff priceBuild on what works; don't feel the need to change everything or most thingsPrioritize external engagement, insist on it, and commit to external engagements so that your calendar time for this is protectedOn African models of leadership: they tend to focus on the collective nature of people: the person in the context of their community (see for instance the Ubuntu model)Quotes:“Positive thinking is not about utopia: I call myself a realistic positive thinker. There are a lot of negative things in the world. It is about how we balance negative and positive things”“If you have a weak transitioning period, you set yourself up for failure”“As soon as you enter the door, you have to problem solve, there is no honeymoon for senior leaders”Resources:Adama's LinkedIn ProfilePositive minds, a pro bono consulting, coaching, and mentoring group (see also Coul's blog on this site)Coul's blog post about leadership transitionYouTube video of this podcast&l
