Lauren and Rocky open up the conversation talking about what success means in business. Most business comes down to math, and simple math at that. If you sit down before starting a business and do the math, you should have an idea about whether the business can be successful. The conversation takes a turn towards cash washes, which Lauren welcomes. Is this really becoming as oversaturated as it seems? Lauren then asks Rocky to demystify and differentiate “money” in business: revenue, profit, cash. A huge key to understand here is that you can have a profitable business that runs out of cash. This occurs when you try to grow too fast. Not enough business owners understand this! Rocky also points out that you should be aware of some initial success, and that it won't necessarily continue. He also recommends using conservative numbers when “underwriting” your business plan. Lauren then asks Rocky about buying a business. Is that easier than creating one? You should take into account how much involvement the owner has, the client number and mix, and more. This is when rocky explains the Profit First system, which is very like paying yourself first in the personal finance realm. Speaking of personal finance, Rocky touches on the importance of separating personal and business finances. Rocky closes with reminding people to do the math before they start (or buy) the business they're considering. He warns us about going into franchises. It should make business sense, not passion sense. If you liked this episode, you'll also like episode 67: Starting Your Own Business or 140: Online Businesses. About Rocky: Rocky Lalvani is the Chief Profitability Adviser for business owners. He teaches them how to ensure they get paid and make profit a priority! As a certified Profit First Professional, he implements Mike Michalowicz's Profit First System. Rocky started with nothing when his parents immigrated to the United States when he was two years old, and his parents were in their 40's. It was his parents' second time starting over in life as they moved here to experience the American dream. Despite a lot of struggles and his mom passing away when Rocky was 7, he has achieved financial and life success. Rocky loves to share his journey and inspire others to achieve their dreams even faster. In this episode, Frankie Tortora and Steve Folland have a chat in response to a question from Colin Parks AKA Anonymous. They say…“Hi Frankie and SteveI've worked for a company (employed) for over 12 years. It's grown from 50 people to a 5,000+ strong agency.I work with digital technology as an Account Director and I've managed some decent clients. My key skills are listening to, understanding and challenging client requirements, and then translating them into actionable, achievable outcomes. I have the soft skills of technology, but I don't code. I'm now fed up with the increasing internal hierarchy, unnecessary process bollocks and the required emphasis on being seen to do things (like PowerPoint decks) rather than actually achieving valuable outcomes for clients.Anyway, I'm currently on 3 months of gardening leave so I have some time to plan my goals, brush up on skills, and, of course, do some gardening…Ultimately, I want to go freelance, but I don't want to be known as a “C” word (Consultant) as I intend to actually roll my sleeves up and do work such as designing Proof of Concepts, helping their development teams and deciding on the right technology. What advice can you give someone wanting to go freelance when it's about services and outcomes rather than outputs? That is, I don't create, say, graphics or videos. Instead, I help clients define their problems and investigate solutions. Any thoughts? Thanks, Colin”What would your advice be? Hey Cousins!!!Although it appears that we have resumed with our regular content on this channel, the people of Palestine are still in our hearts and in our du'ahs daily. We ask that you all make du'ah for them as well - may Allah grant them justice and end their suffering. This week on CCP, we were joined by one of the funniest people we know - Zaki Zeeko! After knowing Zaki for the past few years and watching his growth from hosting weddings to becoming an entrepreneur, Zaki shared his entertaining journey filled with many laughs and a lot of life lessons - the most important one being that if Allah has chosen a path for you, nothing and no one can stand in your way. Our hearts have been heavy since the atrocities that have began on October 7th and we thought this episode (a more light hearted one) would help lift your spirits and remind you all that Allah is the Most Generous, the Most Kind, the Most Just and He Knows Best. We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it!As always, thank you so much for all of your support! My fav, Marshalls, is sponsoring today's episode reminding us where we can get the good stuff for less (advertisement by Marshalls). On this week's episode of Networth and Chill, I'm sitting down with the queen of cupcakes and founder of Sprinkles, Candace Nelson. Opening your own business can feel like a huge risk, especially when you are throwing a complete career change into the mix. But when Candace lost her job as an investment banker, she did just that, and opened one of the most recognizable cupcake businesses in the country. I ask Candace what it was like to pivot her professional career into something completely new, what drew her to baking, and what some of the biggest challenges she faced were when starting out. There is so much that goes into opening your own business, and I ask Candace what advice she has for those looking to head down that path. Got a financial question you want answered on a future episode? Text me or leave me a voicemail at 908-858-3410. Special thanks again to Marshalls for sponsoring this episode!
