Is it because women just don't have good business ideas? Or is it yet another sign of a sick startup ecosystem? As Angela Priestley and Tarla Lambert agree: “More to be done.”Lots of good news from Parliament House this week, including the “right to disconnect” Bill, the government's new legislation to scrap “sexual reputation” as admissible evidence in sexual assault cases, plus Senator Raff Ciccone becoming the first father to bring his baby into the Senate. Did you ever think we would go backwards in gender parity within government cabinets around the world? Neither did we. It's happening in countries like Hungary, where they now have an all-male cabinet. On a more positive note, the Matildas v Canada Women's World Cup match became Channel 7's most watched program of the year. We think Brazilian soccer icon Marta's brilliant press conference speech sums up the rise in women's football quite nicely: “20 years ago, in 2003, nobody knew Marta – it was my first World Cup. Twenty years later we have become the reference for women all over the world.” We take a look at all this, plus the cost of living and how it's affecting women more acutely in climate disaster-affected areas, as well as Senator David Pocock's new ‘duty of care' climate bill. Stories discussed this week include:The countries that still have all-male cabinetsWomen more likely to be multiple job holders than menThe ‘duty of care' bill is a chance for the government to show it cares about young people‘Incredibly hard': Climate disasters amid a cost-of-living crisis impacting women most acutely‘I didn't have a female idol, you guys didn't show female games': Marta on the persistence from players that progressed women's footballMatildas win was Seven's most watched program of the yearThe Crux is produced by Agenda Media, the 100% women founded and owned media business, publishing the daily news publication Women's Agenda. Angela Priestley,  Publisher & Co-founder, Women's Agenda & Agenda Media, and Tarla Lambert, Editor in Chief & Co-owner, Women's Agenda & Co-founder, Agenda Media on early career uncertainty to tapping into their purpose and finding their flow, how ambition and drive got their foot in the door while collective empowered realism and entrepreneurial spirit propelled their growth and impact.   Key Insights (02:07) How did they start her leadership journey? Angela had always been interested in current affairs and news; she realised she wanted to be a journalist while in school. Angela started Women's Agenda as the founding editor and after a couple of years was offered a management buyout of the publication which she accepted. Tarla, like Angela, didn't necessarily seek out to be an entrepreneur but also had an interest in the news and politics. Tarla worked alongside Angela and formed a good working relationship and eventually partnered together to continue Women's Agenda. (08:33) What are some of Tarla and Angela's leadership lessons? Tarla learnt career plans do not have to be linear and that it's OK to experience many twists and turns. Tarla's greatest leadership lesson is to be naïve to avoid feeling overwhelmed by the big tasks. She also advises to make sure people know you are there by being obnoxious as it has led her to have some amazing opportunities in her career journeys such as meetings with the country's biggest CEOs. Angela advises to find your purpose. Purpose will drive you throughout your career and will be your motivation. (29:17) What tools can Angela and Tarla share to the audience to add to their Leadership Toolbox? Angela shares to the audience, read the news and know what is going on, attach yourself to a mission and use that mission to help determine your values, who you will work and won't work with, the line you will and won't cross and for what purpose. Tarla reiterates, finding your purpose is the most important, really think about what you want to do, where your values lie and that will help guide you.   Important Resources and Links If you'd like to learn more about how CommBank is supporting the growth of women in business visit https://www.commbank.com.au/women-in-focus.html   Host of the Leading Women podcast, Shivani Gopal is a serial entrepreneur, speaker and advocate on a mission to create a more equal world. The need for perinatal mental health support at an all-time high, with one in five new mums and one in ten new dads experiencing perinatal depression and anxiety, equating to around 100,000 Aussie parents each. "Cathy Ngo is a social entrepreneur, keynote speaker, and writer based in Sydney. She's known for pushing the boundaries and agenda for diversity, equity, and inclusion. Cathy's continued advocacy work and thought leadership is featured across many publications, including the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, ABC, SBS, Women's Agenda, and on radio. Cathy has a five-year-old son, Hendrick. When he was born, she struggled with deep perinatal depression and anxiety which lasted for almost three years. While she felt prepared for childbirth and the possibility of perinatal depression, nothing prepared her for the cultural expectations with hormones on overdrive. As an Australian-born to Vietnamese parents, she had a choice to honour this tradition, but instead decided to lead things her own way. She didn't find many resources at the time on the intersection of cultural heritage and PND. The demands of meeting both her Asian roots and navigating parenthood were overwhelming. Determined to help other culturally diverse families, Cathy is passionate about supporting programs that break down the stigma and barriers in reaching out for help and support.

How the law silences women

How Many More Women will continue to be failed by the legal system? This week's discussion is all about exposing how the law silences women. Not just in Australia. All over the world. And it comes thanks to two London-based barristers, Jenifer Robinson & Keina Yoshida.Together, they have co-authored the game-changing and essential book, How Many More Women? exploring legal response to the MeToo Movement. As more women are feeling empowered to speak about gender-based violence, more are also hitting up against a new form of systemic silencing. There has been a clear spike in legal actions against women and the media, following the spike in survivors telling their stories. The book explains how the law is being wielded in Australia and across the world to reinforce the status quo of silence that existed before #MeTooIn this conversation, we discuss the playbook used by rich and powerful men to silence women, and how some of the issues that may be preventing Australian women from being heard or coming forward at all, are actually common across the world. We also discuss gendered censorship, the hidden gender of the law, and the steps that can be taken to "Free her Speech". Jen also shares more on her experiences representing Amber Heard in the Defamation Case that Johnny Depp took against his ex wife and the Sun newspaper in London – where a judge rules in 2020 that he had found Johnny Depp had assaulted Amber heard on a dozen separate occasions. When it comes to medical drama's we'll often think about Grey's Anatomy, ER or even House. What's missing from these drama's is the perspective of the female Doctor and the truth behind a medical system that truly needs an overhaul. Dr Neela Janakiramanan is a reconstructive plastic surgeon with expertise in complex hand and wrist surgery. She is a seasoned public speaker and advocate on issues including health equity, gender equity and diversity, and inclusion. Neela is a regular contributor to Women's Agenda, and has also written for The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, The Saturday Paper, and often appears on ABC's The Drum. Outside of seeing patients, Dr Neela has turned her hand to fiction writing. Her latest book, The Registrar offers a rare insight into the world of a surgeon-in- the-making from one who has survived it. Dedicated and ambitious, Emma Swann is about to start a gruelling year as a surgical registrar at the prestigious Mount teaching hospital. Emma quickly experiences escalating stress as a registrar. It's an arduous, unremitting slog of twenty-hour days, punishing schedules, life and death decisions – and very little assistance, instruction or support from her superiors, who waste no time pointing out just how superior they are. Amidst a background culture of humiliation and bullying, being a woman just makes things worse: misogyny is rife and Emma is subjected to other, more insidious, kinds of male attention. This gripping novel goes behind the headlines to reveal the human experience of being both a doctor and patient in a medical system at breaking point. Soak up the new perspectives and lived experiences shared by this deep thinking advocate, Dr Neela Janakiroamanan. Etta is the founder of Lactamo, a corporate lawyer, and Mum of 4 young children.  In 2019 following her own struggles with breastfeeding, Etta recognised that despite the importance of breastfeeding, rates worldwide were disappointingly low. UNICEF reported that “No country in the world meets the recommended standards for breastfeeding”. Etta was disappointed with the lack of products to help Mums. It's a global problem and Etta had a simple and scalable solution, with IP protection. So, Etta founded Lactamo.  Lactamo is a specialised ball specifically developed and designed for the elasticity of lactating breast tissue, which has the ability to address all of the common breastfeeding problems.  Lactamo was the winner of the Australian MedTech Actuator Award (covering Australia and India) in December 2019, the recipient of a grant from the NSW State Government in 2020, was announced by St George as Australia's "Best New Business Idea 2020" (TEDxSydney), and Etta was announced recently by Women's Agenda as “Emerging Entreprenuer 2021” Finalist. Lactamo was selected by the NSW Government to be a part of the Going Global Program for expansion into both China and India. Really excitingly, Lactamo has just completed a successful clinical trial with Deakin University and the Western Health Partnership. A straight up-and-down journalist is how Marina Go describes herself prior to her foray into the boardroom. From her days as Editor for Dolly, Elle, Australian Good Taste, and Sunday Life, and then General Manager of Bauer/Hearst brand's: Harper's Bazaar, Elle, and Cosmopolitan, her path to the boardroom hasn't been as bizarre as you may think. Journalists ask questions, but what they're particularly skilled at is listening.  And that is the makings of an effective director, Marina explains. Marina's first board role was at Netball Australia, which she obtained via WOB. Today she has a full-time portfolio career, comprising Non Executive Director (NED) Autosports Group (ASX:ASG); Energy Australia; 7-eleven; Pro-PAC (ASX:PPG); and The Walkley Foundation, and Chair at Ovarian Cancer Australia; and Suncorp Super Netball Commission. She has spent the past 30 years creating and building commercially successful brands that connect deeply with consumer groups across digital and print channels. Her focus is on reputational risk and digital innovation, but it is her passion for gender equality and balance that is becoming her legacy. In spite of the challenges presented by traditional notions of male leadership, stereotypes and gender barriers, she has succeeded as Netball Australia's first independent NED and Chair of the West Tigers NRL, which saw her nominated as the Australian Financial Review Boss True Leader in 2016. 'In Conversation with Claire', Marina confides that her most rewarding career move was launching Women's Agenda, an independent female owned and run online publication, and the Women's Agenda Leadership Awards. At the turn of the century when most publications only featured women if they were a celebrity or a victim, Women's Agenda “created a stink” by showcasing talented women from every sector and known background in business and leadership. It caused a ripple effect across mainstream media and put women on the radar. At the close of the hardest year for many, Marina shares the emotional toll COVID-19 has had on the mental wellbeing of staff across the organisations she boards.
