She moved to Australia in 2018 from Hampshire, England! It was then where she started her journey to diagnosis after suffering for 12 years with heavy, painful periods, back pain and chronic UTIs.After a 2 year battle with medical professionals. She was finally diagnosed with endometriosis in June 2020 through laparoscopic surgery. She has also been diagnosed with interstitial cystitis and has undergone a second laparoscopy, last year. It was in March 2021 on International Women's Day that she launched her podcast, The Endo Chats Podcast with the aim of providing support to those that need it. She has displayed great courage and determination in achieving her aspirations of giving women, youth and minority groups a voice at a local, state and international level. Khadija utilises her powerful and inspired voice to advocate equality and inclusion. Khadija Gbla was born in Sierra Leone, spent her youth in Gambia, and as a teenager put down roots in Australia. Khadija was just 3-years-old when the war broke out in her country, Sierra Leone, before obtaining refugee status and resettling in Adelaide.Khadija is the lead voice and campaigner on Female Genital Mutilation in Australia. She runs a not for profit organisation Ending Female Genital Mutilation Australia which works to protect Australian girls from FGM and to support survivors of FGM. Khadija provides training for professionals, advocacy and community education for practising communities in Australia. Khadija is also a TEDx speaker with close to 3 Million views on her talk, "My mother's strange definition of empowerment".She has represented Australia in the international arena at the Harvard National Model United Nations, Commonwealth Youth Forum and Australian and Africa Dialogue, Commonwealth heads of States Women's Forum etc. Khadija has been recognised through numerous awards for her vision and leadership. Tamika is an EDM and Pop singer and songwriter with over 20 million streams worldwide. Under the artist name XIRA, Tamika has featured on songs with American DJ 3LAU (Justin Blau) and EDM heavyweight Nicky Romero; and has a new one out in October with Audien. Tamika suffers from endometriosis and after an emergency laparoscopy for an ovarian torsion and PID in 2017, Tamika turned her focus away from performing live and more towards songwriting and recording (things she can do in her own time, in the comfort of her trackies, with a heat pack close by at all times). Lottie is best known for her “bloat friendly wardrobe” and first began her online journey sharing her struggles with IBS, anxiety and an eating disorder. Realising that there was a whole community of women who lived with chronic illnesses and battled with bloating, body image and everything in-between, Lottie made it her passion to provide support and uplifting messaging to her online audience to show others they're not alone. Lottie's open and honest approach to women's health has enabled her to create a safe space and loyal community where there's "no such thing as too much information”. The heart of her content revolves around empowering women to better understand their bodies and feel good within themselves.In 2018, Lottie created the hashtag #mybloatedwardrobe and it soon became viral, being used by thousands globally, highlighting a fun approach to finding clothes that make you feel both comfortable and confident.Seeing the success of her authentic messaging and values, Lottie saw a huge increase in her social media following, which led to her confidently turning her passion into a business, leaving her job and launching ‘You've Gut This'; bringing a community to over 250,000 combined followers, including a private Facebook support group with monthly events. Amy is an effective advocate for bringing consumers, clinicians and researchers together to support women and families affected by birth-related trauma. In 2017, Amy launched the Australasian Birth Trauma Association (ABTA), she has established a not-for-profit organisation focused on the recognition and understanding of birth-related complications. With a multi-disciplinary advisory group of midwives, physiotherapists, obstetricians, gynaecologists, perinatal psychiatrists and clinical researchers, she is working to develop the resources and strategies to prevent and effectively manage birth-related trauma. Amy's understanding of birth-related trauma has come from her own experience, and the many birthing people she has listened to and helped to find support. Amy's vision is to break down the stigma attached to birth trauma, and empower birthing families to feel comfortable speaking out, so as to continue driving change in current maternity practices in Australia and New Zealand. Today's episode is with the incredible founders of The Spoonie Society, Helene and Dom!Dominique and Helene are very familiar with the suffering and stigma that is associated with having a chronic illness as they both suffer from Endometriosis and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Dominique was diagnosed with Endometriosis in July of 2019 via laparoscopy & endometrial excision. She has since undergone multiple procedures in order to obtain the best quality of life. Helene was also diagnosed with Endometriosis in August of 2018 and has since been diagnosed with PCOS and Adenomyosis. Helene has also undergone multiple surgeries & procedures including a ketamine infusion and nerve blockers.Dominique and Helene met through social media only just last year, after sharing their experiences with Endometriosis and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. It was then that The Spoonie Society was born!
