Laurence grew up in England and became fascinated with the United States at an early age. Along with his wife, he moved to the US in 2008, and they currently live in Chicago. He is the creator of the YouTube channel Lost in the Pond. The title refers to those things, including word differences and cuisines, that were lost in translation when he moved to the United States.
Laurence Brown was born in the UK in 1951 to parents living in the Far East and spent much of my childhood there, though at the age of nine I was sent to boarding school in England. After completing secondary school in 1969 (Radley College, Oxford), I came to Australia where I have lived much of my life since, working mainly as a teacher of English as a second language. I am married with two daughters and live in suburban Brisbane. I enjoy travelling, bushwalking, skiing, and reading widely. As far as my inner life is concerned, I have been interested ever since my early twenties in the possibility of an inner truth and have been a regular meditator since the 1970s. In 2009, feeling at a dead end with teaching, I applied to study full time for a PhD in philosophy at the University of Queensland. My focus has been on coincidences and I was awarded a PhD degree in 2014. The title of the thesis is Examining Coincidences: towards an integrated approach.I am now officially retired and have been fairly painstakingly engaged in converting my thesis into book form, which was released in August this year by the publisher Imprint Academic as The Many Faces of Coincidence. I've also been developing and giving presentations based on its chapters, which I find very enjoyable.
T/w Suicide This episode is an interview with Dixie, manager of Jarvis Lane, raising awareness of suicide with Jarvis Lane's charity single cover Baba O'Riley for MIND. Dixie was band manager to Jonathan Owen's 90s band The Pocket Devils, and was the inspiration behind the 2014 cult film Svengali (and 2009 internet episodes), starring Jonny Owen as Dixie, Vicky McClure, Martin Freeman, Carl Barat, Alan McGee, Michael Socha, Matt Berry, Maxine Peake and many more. Prior to lockdown, Dixie's daughter Holly Dixon tragically took her own life and Dixie celebrates her life in this episode, along with tributes to his other family members and friends of Jarvis Lane – Alan Green and Laurence Brown – who also took their own lives. Laurence Brown explores a few of the memos that must have gotten "lost in the pond" between the US and Britain. Zora O'Neill tells us how studying the Arabic language might not prepare you for talking to everyday people in today's Arab world. And hear how the most important royal family in Europe earned their titles the old fashioned way — by marrying into them. A graduate from two Ivy League universities with subspecialty training in ophthalmology, Dr. Brown served as a respected ophthalmologist in the U.S. Air Force for a period of eight years. Midway through his Air Force career, Dr. Brown's ideal American family' included a wife, two children, and the requisite two cars and a dog. His country home was crowded with the full array of comforts and toys which clutter the lives of those preoccupied with materialism. Yet Dr. Brown ended up sacrificing virtually everything he had worked for when he faced a religious conviction that overturned his lifelong priorities. Following a personal miracle through which the life of his daughter was saved, Dr. Brown redirected his focus to religious study in an attempt to make good on a promise made to God. In the process, Dr. Brown followed the chain of revelation through the Abrahamic religions from Judaism to Christianity and, in the end, to Islam. Dr.Laurence Brown received his B.A. from Cornell University, his MD from Brown University Medical School, and his ophthalmology residency training at George Washington University Hospital in Washington, DC.
