This week, we discuss why a "unified streaming stack" is not the same as combining two streaming services, despite media reports that HBO Max and Paramount+ will merge into a single DTC service shortly. As we break down the latest details of the proposed Paramount and WBD deal, we speculate on the layoff impact across both companies, as Paramount tells bankers it expects to see billions in cost savings while telling employees the savings target will be realized mostly through non-personnel means. We also cover the launch of F1 on Apple TV, Versant Media's full-year 2025 earnings, Sling TV losing 167,000 subs in Q4, NBCU not planning to publish Super Bowl viewership numbers for Peacock/digital, and YouTube in talks to stream four more live NFL games. Finally, we detail that, due to rising costs for servers, RAM, SSDs, and energy, Akamai has notified customers and partners of upcoming surcharges and contract renewal adjustments.Podcast produced by Security Halt Media

This Week in Horror History is your winter horror watchlist, breaking down Christmas horror movies, winter thrillers, and classic ghost stories for the week of November 26–December 2. In this episode of the Weekly Spooky horror podcast, host Henrique Couto revisits Misery (1990), Scrooge / A Christmas Carol (1951), Violent Night (2022), deep-cut sequel The Descent Part 2 (2009), and cult anthology Deadtime Stories (1986) to help you build the perfect cold-weather horror marathon. We start in the snow with Misery (1990), Rob Reiner's adaptation of Stephen King's cabin-fever nightmare. A bestselling author crashes in a blizzard and wakes up trapped with his “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes, whose devotion turns surgical. It's tense, wintry, and weirdly cozy in that “stuck inside with the storm howling outside” way—perfect for the dark days after Thanksgiving. How to watch (U.S.): You can see it for free on Tubi, or rent it wherever you like to do that sort of thing. Then we slide straight into holiday hauntings with Scrooge / A Christmas Carol (1951), one of the most iconic Christmas ghost stories ever filmed. Alastair Sim's Ebenezer Scrooge is dragged through past, present, and a terrifying future by rattling chains, graveyards, and skeletal specters. It's gothic, eerie, and still strangely comforting—a reminder that Christmas horror began with moral dread and vengeful spirits long before killer Santas. How to watch (U.S.): You can watch it free on Tubi, on Plex, or wherever you rent your movies. From there we jump to modern holiday carnage with Violent Night (2022), where Santa picks up a sledgehammer and goes to war with mercenaries during a Christmas Eve hostage situation. It's loud, cathartic, funny, and surprisingly sweet at its core—ideal Black Friday recovery viewing when you want bloody Christmas action, tinsel, and a very bad night for the naughty list. How to watch (U.S.): It's streaming on Peacock, or you can snag it anywhere you rent digital movies. The Deep Cut Spotlight crawls underground with The Descent Part 2 (2009), the much-maligned cave sequel that deserves another look. Sarah is dragged out of the caves amnesiac and traumatized, only to be pressured into leading a rescue team back into the darkness. What follows is a brutal, grim follow-up packed with creatures that feel a little too plausible—perfect “cozy nightmare fuel” as you settle into your turkey coma and wonder what's lurking just beyond your flashlight beam. How to watch (U.S.): It's free to watch on Plex, or rentable wherever you normally pick up digital horror movies. To cap the episode, Henrique recommends Deadtime Stories (1986), a trashy, off-the-wall horror anthology movie that leans into fairy-tale weirdness and late-night TV vibes. It feels tailor-made for cold-weather sleepovers: campy, bizarre, and just dangerous enough to feel like you shouldn't be watching it right before bed.How to watch (U.S.): You can watch it free on TubiTV, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Fandango at Home Free, and Plex, or with a subscription on Amazon Prime Video and Sling TV.Along the way, we roll through the Birthday Roll, raising a drumstick to horror favorites like Peter Facinelli, Joe Dante, and Nestor Carbonell, and talk about how Christmas horror has evolved—from the moral reckoning of Scrooge to Santa as bruised action hero and the creeping dread of being trapped, whether you're snowed in or sealed underground. If you're hunting for winter horror movies and Christmas horror classics to plug into your December calendar, this week's horror history has you covered. This episode is sponsored by Cozy Earth — ultra-soft, temperature-regulating bamboo sheets, comforters, and loungewear that keep you warm without overheating while you binge scary movies. I am always hopeful when it comes to a new clown slasher film that hits the scene. After watching this movie, I have come to the realization that this movie offers a more traditional slasher style than Scream V or Bodies Bodies Bodies. This movie may be a modern tale of teens trying to escape a killer clown in a cornfield—but this clown-fueled carnage fest has a nostalgic and spunk spirit. What a great way to end the month of August! Talking to BJ Verot about his role as ‘Frendo' is invaluable. He went deep into details about the death sequences and stunts, explaining everything down to the wire. This is what I love hearing! Clown in a Cornfield is a satisfying movie to watch; with the impeccable acting, the death scenes, and the possible opening for a sequel, I cannot stress how much I love this movie. Making its way in my Top 10 Favorites, I do not regret seeing it and I highly recommend this movie if you are looking for something to watch. It's time for Art to move over because there is a new clown that's about to get down. What is there not to love about this violent, funny, and just plain cool slasher film? You're just going to have to see for yourselves – now streaming on Sling TV, The Roku Channel, Amazon Prime, AMC+, and many more services.

Additionally, we list out why not all pay TV customers will have access to ESPN's new DTC service for free when it launches on August 21st. We covered Netflix's pricing increase in Australia, Sling TV's new daily, weekend, and weekly pricing models, as well as the changes to Sky Sports' coverage of the 2025/2026 Premier League season. Finally, we detail what it takes to produce quality content on LinkedIn, how to build a brand, and why to ignore many of the so-called content and SEO experts on LinkedIn.Podcast produced by Security Halt Media

On this week's show we ask, how satisfied are you with your streaming service providers? We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: Prime Video has 88% of customers on ad-supported plans Amazon gearing up to roll out new Fire TV OS on streaming player Roku announces 2 new streaming sticks starting at just $30 Max begins password-sharing crackdown Other: Aiwa: Then and Now State of Streaming: Satisfaction with streaming providers (The Streamable) How are Americans really feeling about their streaming services? Recently, we surveyed nearly 1,500 cord-cutters to get a clearer picture of how people are watching, what they're paying, and which services they are most satisfied with. The results reveal shifting habits in a saturated streaming market and point to what matters most as we speed right through 2025. Full article here… Streaming services people use: YouTube TV: 30% Hulu + Live TV: 10% Sling TV: 7% DIRECTV STREAM – 6% Fubo: 3% Philo: 3% DIRECTV via internet: 2% Dish: 2% None of the above: 38% Are subscribers satisfied? Despite rising subscription costs and service fragmentation, 58% of users are satisfied with their streaming experience, 33% are neutral, and only 9% are dissatisfied. This high satisfaction rate, despite 2024's price hikes and content reshuffles, is likely due to improved app performance, better device compatibility, and more tailored subscription options. How many services do people use? In 2025, streaming is typically a multi-platform experience: 49% of households subscribe to 2-4 services, 38% use 5 or more, and only 12% stick to a single service. Content fragmentation drives users to stack subscriptions for their favorite shows and sports, a shift from the cable era, making multiple subscriptions the norm for convenience. Monthly spending on streaming The typical streaming bill has surged, with 35% of users spending $50-$100 monthly, often on live TV and multiple on-demand subscriptions. Additionally, 26% spend over $100, likely on premium plans or add-ons, while only 19% keep costs at $25 or less by limiting subscriptions or using free trials. Streaming costs and complexity now rival traditional cable bills. Bundled benefits Bundling is a popular cost-saving strategy, with 31% of respondents accessing streaming through Amazon Prime and 14% via phone bills, often getting discounted or free access to platforms like Netflix or Disney+. However, 36% prefer direct subscriptions or find their preferred platforms aren't bundled, showing bundling is common but not universal. Churn vs. loyalty In 2025, 70% of users showed strong loyalty to their existing services, indicating platform stickiness despite subscription fatigue. However, 50% canceled at least one streaming service in 2024, driven by cyclical pauses, price hikes, or lack of content. Unlike cable, streaming subscriptions are easily canceled, leading to dynamic, seasonal churn, with some users returning for new content. What matters most? Here are the features that matter most to users: Affordable pricing Access to local channels Live sports availability Device compatibility (smart TVs, streaming sticks, etc.) Channel variety Reliable streaming quality DVR functionality Support for 4K resolution and surround sound (less critical) Preferred streaming devices Smart TVs are the top choice for streaming, used by 56% of viewers, followed by Roku devices at 44%, then Fire TV, Apple TV, and web/mobile viewing. This highlights a trend toward living room, lean-back streaming experiences over desktop viewing, driven by widespread smart TV adoption and improved built-in apps.

On this week's show we review ten innovations we feel had the most impact on how we consume entertainment in our homes. We also read your emails and take a look at the week's news. News: DIRECTV STREAM introduces new slimmed-down channel plans Sling TV loses 50,000 subscribers to close out 2024 Amazon Announces Plans To Unveil New Alexa Devices in 2025 Phillips expands its Roku TV range with a $1,300 65-inch OLED Other: Friendly TV 15" Pix-Star Digital Frame Skylight Digital Frame Ten Innovations that have Transformed Our Home Theaters Over the last decade, several innovations have significantly transformed the home theater experience. This week we will review ten innovations we feel had the most impact on how we consume entertainment in our homes. 4K HDR and 8K Resolution - The proliferation of 4K UHD content, along with High Dynamic Range (HDR) technology, has improved visual quality significantly, providing more vivid colors and enhanced contrast. Three-Dimensional Sound - Unlike traditional surround sound systems that rely on channels (e.g., 5.1 or 7.1 setups), object-based audio allows sound designers to place sounds as individual objects in a 3D space. This results in a more immersive audio experience, making viewers feel as if sound is coming from all around them, including overhead. Streaming Devices and Services - The rise of smart TVs and streaming devices has made it easier to access a vast library of content without the need for physical media, further enhancing the home theater experience. Flexible Speaker Configuration - Users are no longer limited to a fixed number of speakers. With object-based audio, systems can scale from simple soundbars to complex multi-speaker setups, adapting to the room's acoustics and the viewer's preferences. Enhanced Content Availability - Many streaming services and Blu-ray discs now offer content mixed in Atmos or similar formats, increasing the accessibility of high-quality audio experiences. Home Theater Integration - The growth of AV receivers and sound systems optimized for these formats has made it easier for consumers to integrate advanced audio technology into their home theater setups without needing extensive technical knowledge. Smart Home Integration - The integration of home theater systems with smart home devices (e.g., voice assistants, smart lighting) allows for a more personalized and convenient viewing experience. Projection Technology - Advancements in projector technology, including ultra-short throw projectors and improvements in brightness and contrast ratios, have made it possible to achieve a cinematic experience in various home sizes. Advanced Room Correction - Room correction technologies have improved significantly, allowing for better sound calibration in different environments. This ensures that the audio performance is optimized for the specific acoustics of your room. New Panel Technology - OLED, LED, Mini and Micro LED have not only improved the picture we look at but have brought down prices to the point where you can buy a 75” TV for a few hundred dollars. And the worst of these TVs are better than the best TVs that were available at the start of the HD revolution. Of this list, which do you think had the biggest impact? Is there something else you felt should be on this list? Let us know.

Ring cameras have come a long way. Since the security camera brand launched 11 years ago, its video doorbells and cams have become vigilant, constant surveyors of patios, porches, and vestibules everywhere. Amazon now owns the company, and has ushered it through controversies over privacy concerns, incidents of vigilantism, and the company's cozy relationship with law enforcement. The drama has not slowed growth; over 10 million Rings have been installed, and the cameras currently blanket our urban and suburban landscape, filming the movements of you, your family, and any strangers who wander near your door. That makes for a lot of video to sift through if you're trying to find something important, like whether or not a delivery was made, or what time your kids left for soccer practice. That abundance of footage is why Ring cameras, along with many other consumer products right now, are getting some AI-powered capabilities. Ring's software update helps users search for specific moments their cameras may have captured. This week, WIRED senior writer Paresh Dave joins the show again to talk about the evolution of Ring—how the security cameras have become nearly ubiquitous security tech, and what the future holds now that they're being infused with AI.Show Notes:Read Paresh's story about Ring's AI updates. Read WIRED's guides to the best indoor and outdoor security cameras. Read more about all the data Ring collects from its users and why we recently stopped recommending Ring cameras for a couple of years.Recommendations:Paresh recommends getting a Sling TV subscription from Dish to watch live sports. Mike recommends searching for decoy security cameras you can install if your landlord requires you to put up a security camera. Lauren recommends the streaming shows Nobody Wants This and Killing Eve. Both are on Netflix.Paresh Dave can be found on social media @peard33. Lauren Goode is @LaurenGoode. The MLB playoffs arrive after a regular-season finish that essentially produced an extra playoff day and plenty of finger-pointing around Monday's Mets-Braves doubleheader. The league, meanwhile, could see a dream World Series matchup between the Yankees and Dodgers, which would feature its biggest markets and most marketable stars. We also hear from MLB legend Tommy John about his 26-year career, the state of MLB pitching, and his bid for the Baseball Hall of Fame. Plus, DirecTV bought its long-time competitors Dish Network and Sling TV for just $1. CNBC's Alex Sherman explains why.
On the final trading day of September and Q3, Carl Quintanilla, Jim Cramer and David Faber discussed China's stock markets ending the month in rally mode, posting their best one-day performance since 2008. The anchors also reacted to a 2001 discussion between David and Joe Kernen about Echostar.
