We reviewed the big movie of the weekend, the Michael Jackson biopic "Michael," on Tuesday. But there are plenty of other new releases as we await the summer crush. Here's what we discussed in the latest episode of our Breakfast All Day podcast: OVER YOUR DEAD BODY. Samara Weaving and Jason Segel play a miserable married couple who go on a weekend getaway to work on their relationship -- or so they've told each other. Timothy Olyphant and Juliette Lewis co-star in this twisty action comedy from director Jorma Taccone ("Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping"). In theaters. I SWEAR. Robert Aramayo was the surprise best actor winner at the BAFTAs this year for his portrayal of John Davidson, a Scottish man with Tourette syndrome. Writer-director Kirk Jones' film is formulaic in its depiction of adversity, but its heart is in the right place. Maxine Peake, Shirley Henderson and Scott Ellis Watson co-star. In theaters. MOVIE NEWS LIVE! Always a lot to talk about, including "Michael" reactions, early footage of "The Mandalorian & Grogu," casting on Alex Garland's "Elden Ring" movie and more. We won't be here next Friday in solidarity with a nationwide labor strike, but come back on May 8. Thanks for sharing some of your weekend with us! How Before Sunrise was built from index cards on a living room floor. Why thinking about the product kills the work, and what to focus on instead. The case for starting with character before plot, and letting the story follow. What breaking into TV actually looks like. How to set the tone in a writers' room so the ridiculous ideas can surface. Send us a textIn this episode, we sat down with the luminous Holly Godliman as she prepares to take the stage at the Old Vic in Tom Stoppard's masterpiece, Arcadia. As the production approaches its February 4th opening, Holly delves into the "brilliant machinery" of Stoppard's writing and her role as the spirited Chloë Coverly—the modern-day character who famously suggests that sex is the one force capable of upsetting Newton's deterministic universe. From the technical rigors of mastering chaos theory dialogue to the unique energy of performing "in the round" under Carrie Cracknell's direction, Holly offers a rare, intellectual glimpse into the rehearsal room of what is widely considered the greatest play of the late 20th century.Beyond the gardens of Sidley Park, the conversation explores Holly's meteoric rise following her "startlingly assured" professional debut in Doubt: A Parable. Carlos and Holly revisit the high-stakes atmosphere of that production in Bath, reflecting on the lessons she carried from acting alongside Maxine Peake into her current collaboration with friends like Isis Hainsworth. It is a warm, deeply personal exploration of an actress finding her footing on the world's most historic stages, balancing the disciplined curiosity of a researcher with the raw confidence of a natural-born performer.

John Davidson has been the poster boy for Tourette syndrome since 1988, when a documentary about him called ‘John's Not Mad' aired on BBC One. It showed the then 16-year-old from the Scottish Borders, living with explosive, often sweary tics, in a world that didn't understand the condition. Three decades on, we're much more aware of Tourette syndrome and that's in no small part down to John and his campaigning. Now, a film based on his life - ‘I Swear' - starring Maxine Peake and Robert Aramayo is about to be released. In this episode, John talks to Emma Tracey about the challenges of teenage tics, being shut in a school cupboard by a teacher so he didn't distract the class, and the impact the physical tics are having on his joints and muscles as he gets older. The Primetime Emmy Awards are right around the corner, so let's get excited about the real winners: The (likely) losers! We're singing the praises of this year's unsung heroes with a look at the dark horses and snubs (cast of Andor, anyone?) in this year's Emmys race. And wouldn't you know it? One of those dark horses happens to be the second half of our FX-themed summer show swap! Say Nothing is nominated for a writing award and it's easy to see why: It's a gripping true-history story of women breaking the glass ceiling of the Irish Republican Army during The Troubles filled with sharp dialogue and plenty of gallows humor (or “humour” if you're feeling vibe). ———

Spanning four decades, Say Nothing explores the tumultuous period in Northern Ireland known as The Troubles. The series opens with the shocking disappearance of Jean McConville, a single mother of ten who was abducted from her home in 1972 and never seen alive again.Through the eyes of various IRA members, Say Nothing explores the extremes some people will go to in the name of their beliefs, the way a deeply divided society can suddenly tip over into armed conflict, the long shadow of radical violence for both victims and perpetrators, and the emotional and psychological costs of a code of silence. The series stars Lola Petticrew as “Dolours Price” and Hazel Doupe as “Marian Price,” impetuous young women who became potent symbols of radical politics. Anthony Boyle stars as “Brendan Hughes,” a charismatic but conflicted military strategist, and Josh Finan as “Gerry Adams,” a savvy political operator who would go on to negotiate peace and has always denied having any involvement with the IRA. Maxine Peake stars as “Older Dolours Price.”Joshua Zetumer (showrunner / executive producer) is a writer of film and television. He's worked for every major studio and written on numerous films—Robocop, Patriots Day, the James Bond franchise. The gang are back for the new season and we've not been replaced by AI! We're kicking off by talking about The Miseducation Of Cameron Post (2018), a film which revisits the same topic as one of the very first films we did on the podcast. But where But I'm A Cheerleader tackled conversion camps in a camp, pastel coloured dreamscape, TMOCP is more of a realistic nightmare.Join us as we discuss the insidious niceness of the adults running the conversion camp, the differences between the book and the film, and on the importance of friendship in LGBTQ+ communities, both on screen and in real life. And if you have listened and you want to hear the short story Alice wrote for Maxine Peake, friend of TMOCP's director Desiree Akhavan, you can find that here: https://factoryinternational.org/factoryplus/new-writers/mycelium/ CN: Mention of self harm, discussion of physical and psychological abuse at conversion camps, swearing, spoilers and discussion of a sexual nature.

KORMAC - Maxine Peake - New TV this week
This is week my guest is Desiree Akhavan! Desiree's first feature film was 2014's APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR, in which she also starred. It came off the back of a web series she made in 2010 called The Slope, with fellow NYU postgrad film student Ingrid Jungermann. After Appropriate Behaviour, Desiree had a guest spot on the TV show Girls, and also began adapting the book THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST, alongside her co-writer and producer Cecilia Frugiuele. The film, which Desiree also directed, would star Chloe Grace Moretz and Sasha Lane and went on to win the Sundance Dramatic Grand Jury Prize in 2018. Around the same time, Desiree also created, wrote and directed a brilliant 6-part TV show for Channel 4 called THE BISEXUAL, starring Maxine Peake, Brian Gleeson, Naomi Ackie and Desiree herself and all set in London. Since 2018 Desiree has been working on a very personal project which we talk about, as well directing episodes of many brilliant TV shows, including RAMY, HACKS and TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS. We talk about a lot, and if you've ever read an interview with Desiree you know she's very good at cutting through the bullshit and this is no exception. We dig into how the past five years have seen her working at a different pace and why that is, we talk about the moments after success and the expectations that were placed on her career, we talk about what it actually means or requires to direct an episode of TV, finding a soulmate in her creative partner Cecilia and why learning and having fun is at the centre of everything she does…

Today's Martha Kearney spoke to Christopher Eccleston following the closure of the Oldham Coliseum due to a loss of funding from Arts Council England. They are giving money to build a new theatre in Oldham instead. The closing night saw an emotional Christopher Eccleston and Maxine Peake perform excerpts from a new adaptation of Ken Loach's film I, Daniel Blake - which was due to have been on the Coliseum stage this summer. Eccleston talked about his frustration at the lack of funding, which he felt especially targets arts in the North West. The actor discussed growing up in a working class background and the ever-growing elitism of the arts: ‘you've got to be Oxbridge otherwise you can't act', he says. He says he became an actor not for money, but for his own self-expression and ‘pursuit of the heart', and that he couldn't do so without the support of his wonderful family.
Maxine Peake discusses playing Betty Boothroyd, former Speaker of the House of Commons in Betty! A Sort of Musical, which is about to open at Manchester's Royal Exchange Theatre. Turner Prize nominated artist Heather Phillipson, best known for her sculpture of a giant cherry topped ice cream on Trafalgar Square's Fourth Plinth, discusses her exhibition 'RUPTURE NO 1: blowtorching the bitten peach', using recycled materials, video, sculpture, music and poetry, currently on display at Tate Liverpool. Laura Robertson visits Signal Film and Media in Barrow in Furness to hear about how the charity has benefited from the latest Arts Council funding announcement and to find out what they have planned for the future. The artist Tom Phillips has died at the age of 85. In a Front Row interview from 2012, he discusses his long running artistic projects as a painter, printmaker and collagist. Presenter: Shahidha Bari Producer: Olivia Skinner Image: Maxine Peake as Betty Boothroyd, former Speaker of the House of Commons in Betty! Maxine Peake is an actor and writer who first came to public attention in 1998 as Twinkle in the Victoria Wood sitcom Dinnerladies. She went on to play Veronica in Paul Abbott's series Shameless and later became known for playing real people, including the Hillsborough campaigner Anne Williams, and Sara Rowbotham, the former health worker who exposed the sexual abuse scandal in Rochdale in 2012. Maxine was born in Bolton and after a rocky start at college – she was asked to leave her performing arts course after just two weeks but stuck it out – she won a scholarship to study at RADA. Three months before she was due to graduate she auditioned for Victoria Wood and won her first television role starring alongside Wood, Julie Walters and Anne Reid. Victoria Wood advised her to take on a diverse range of roles in order to avoid being typecast as what Maxine calls the “fat, funny northerner”. She took the advice to heart and extended her range playing Myra Hindley, Martha Costello QC in the legal drama Silk and Hamlet in a critically acclaimed production at the Royal Exchange theatre in Manchester. Maxine has also written plays including Beryl: A Love Story on Two Wheels about Beryl Burton, a Yorkshire woman who dominated 1960s cycling and held the record for the men's 12-hour time trial for two years. Beryl Burton was a champion cyclist who led the way for women's sport in the 1950s through to the mid-1980s. She dominated the cycling scene for many years as well as being an inspiration to women today. Beryl broke cycling records in a time when men dominated sport, however, she went unnoticed despite establishing records that are comparable to those of today's top cyclists and athletes. Today's Mishal Husain spoke with the actor Maxine Peake who wrote and starred in a drama about Beryl Burton after reading about her, and Jeremy Wilson, the Telegraph's chief sports correspondent, who became interested in Beryl's inspirational story, they will discuss his new book, 'Beryl: In Search of Britain's Greatest Athlete.'
