Key Insights (01:55) How did she start her leadership journey? Lisa started her leadership journey through science and research. As Lisa stepped up the ranks in her field, she started to mentor students and work on large international projects such as building telescopes like the Square Kilometer Array (the world's most powerful radio telescope) involving collaboration from around the world. (10:53) How does Lisa use the role of storytelling in shifting societal biases and how is she embedding this in her Initiative, Future You? Future You is a national awareness raising initiative to help young people understand the different pathways STEM skills can take them. Future You shares the stories of role models from different backgrounds to show young people STEM really is for everyone. By showing a diverse examples of career journeys it allow kids to use their imagination when picturing a future in STEM instead of a particular career path. For example, it explores how technology can bring a unique perspective in the work of First Nations women or, how STEM could also mean getting your hands dirty as a heavy vehicle mechanic. (23:27) What tools can Lisa share to the audience to add to their Leadership Toolbox? To focus on the big picture and identify what's truly important to you and to your organization. Dr. Lisa Harvey-Smith was born in Essex, England, left school at 11 and taught herself at home, where she developed a great passion for astronomy. The home schooling paid off because she went on to earn a Master's degree in Physics with Honours in Astronomy and Astrophysics and a Ph.D. in Radio Astronomy, before embarking on a professional career as an Astrophysicist, Astronomer and Educator (she's a Professor), becoming a world-renowned author, researcher, speaker and easy-to-understand science communicator. Honestly, considering my vast lack of knowledge regarding all-things-astronomy, going in I was a little worried about holding an interesting conversation with someone at the opposite end of the knowledge scale but the Prof. was simultaneously fascinating, funny, real and super interesting. Under The Night Sky Brian Cox and Robin Ince discover the importance of the night sky to human history and how our relationship with the stars has changed over the centuries. They are joined by star-gazer Jon Culshaw, astronaut Tim Peake, astrophysicist Lisa Harvey-Smith and astronomy writer Stuart Clark as they chart the changing nature of our relationship with the sky above us. They discuss ancient cave paintings depicting Orion's belt, the astronomical revolution that came with our understanding of how planets orbit the Sun, and how astronauts like Tim who have "touched the sky" have seen the stars in a totally unique way. Has our ever expanding knowledge about the stars twinkling above us removed some of the magic, or have modern missions and the incredible images of space we now see brought us closer, quite literally, to the sky above us? Producer: Alexandra Feachem

Presented on 4 December 2015 by Dr Lisa Harvey-Smith. What is Dark Matter? How did the solar system form? Was Einstein right about the nature of gravity? Are we alone in the universe? To tackle these fascinating questions and more, an international consortium of eleven nations is currently designing the 'Square Kilometre Array' (SKA) telescope. Comprising thousands of radio receivers located in Africa and Australia, the SKA will be the world's most powerful radio telescope. It will revolutionise our understanding of the universe, from the first stars and galaxies formed after the Big Bang to the formation of planet Earth. In preparation for this mega-science project, the CSIRO has built the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope which is due to start early science operations next year. In this talk, CSIRO astronomer Dr. Lisa Harvey-Smith will reveal early results from ASKAP, explain the science and technology behind the telescope and describe many scientific mysteries it will tackle.
